Uncovering sources, distribution, and seasonal patterns of trace element deposition: the elemental puzzle of the western Himalayas.

The transport and deposition of atmospheric pollutants in the Himalayas have a adverse impact on the climate, cryosphere, ecosystem, and monsoon patterns. Unfortunately, there is a insufficiency of data on trace element concentrations and behaviors in the high-altitude Himalayan region, leading to limited research in this area. This study presents a comprehensive and detailed comprehension of trace element deposition, its spatial distribution, seasonal variations, and anthropogenic signals in the high-altitude Kashmir region of the Western Himalayas. Our investigation involved the analysis of 10 trace elements (Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in glacier ice, snow pits, surface snow, and rainwater collected at various sites including Kolahoi, Thajwas, Pahalgam (Greater Himalayan ranges), and Kongdori and Shopian (Pir Panjal Ranges) during 2021.The study reveals distinct ranges of concentrations for the trace elements at different sampling sites. Our analysis of trace element concentration depth profiles in snow pits reveals seasonal fluctuations during the deposition year. The highest concentrations were found in the autumn(below 20cm) and summer (top layer), compared to the winter concentration (10-20cm). The high enrichment factors (EFs) suggest the severity of human-induced trace metal deposition in the western Himalayan region, relative to surrounding regions. Surprisingly, the concentrations and EFs of trace elements showed seasonal contradictions, with lower concentration values and higher EFs during the non-monsoon season and vice versa. A source apportionment analysis using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) technique identified five sources of trace element deposition in the region, including crustal sources (32.33%), coal combustion (15.62%), biomass burning (17.63%), traffic emission (18.8%), and industrial sources (15.6%). Additionally, the study incorporated backward trajectories coupled with δ18O using the NOAA HYSPLIT model to estimate moisture sources in the region, which suggests atmospheric pollutants predominately deposited from the large-scale atmospheric circulation from westerlies (75%) during non-monsoon season. These findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced monitoring and research efforts in the future.

Hydroclimatic non-stationarity drives stream hydrochemistry dynamics through controls on catchment connectivity and water ages

We used data from 17 years of routine stream flow sampling to characterise hydrochemical dynamics in the Girnock Burn, an internationally important long-term catchment monitoring site. We combined hydrochemical time series analysis with hydrological modelling to understand short- and long-term dynamics in relation to dominant runoff processes. Isotopic tracer data employed within the model enabled flux tracking of water as it transited the catchment, facilitating water age estimates. The stream drains an upland 31 km2 catchment with complex topography and variable geology, which influences soil distributions; peaty soils dominate valley bottoms which receive drainage from more permeable podzolic soils on steeper slopes. Short-term hydrochemical dynamics largely reflect the relative dominance of hydrological sources: summer low flows are dominated by alkaline groundwater high in weathering products (Ca2+, Mg2+, SiO2) whilst high flows generated by overland flow from peaty soils are more acidic, DOC enriched, and dominated by atmospheric solutes (Na+, Cl-, SO42-). Baseflows are dominated by older groundwater (>∼3years) in contrast to storm runoff dominated by younger (<∼0.5 years), near-surface, waters. Usual seasonal distributions of stream flows, with high flows in winter and summer low flows, result in strong seasonality in most solutes. However, coupled effects of hydroclimatic variability and catchment heterogeneity dictates marked scatter in flow-concentration relationships for most determinands. A long-term decreasing trend was evident for SO42-concentrations, reflecting continuing effects of reductions in atmospheric deposition of pollutants from coal burning. Reductions in large storm event frequency post-2016 and protracted periods of low flows in the droughts of 2018 and 2022 have resulted in the catchment becoming dominated by low flows, derived from older groundwater with more alkaline chemistry for longer periods. Changing climatic conditions and stream flow responses seem likely to continue to cause changes in stream water quality and associated ecosystem services of the Girnock Burn and similar upland catchments.

Temporal-spatial characteristics and sources of heavy metals in bulk deposition across China

With the rapid development of industries, agriculture, and urbanization (including transportation and population growth), there has been a significant alteration in the emission and atmospheric deposition of heavy metal pollutants. This has consequently given rise to a range of ecological and environmental health issues. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive two-year investigation on the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of heavy metals in atmospheric deposition across China based on the Nationwide Nitrogen Deposition Monitoring Network (NNDMN). The atmospheric bulk deposition of Lead (Pb), Arsenic (As), Nickel (Ni), Selenium (Se), Chromium (Cr) and Cadmium (Cd) were 6.32 ± 1.59, 4.49 ± 0.57, 1.31 ± 0.21, 1.05 ± 0.16, 0.60 ± 0.06 and 0.21 ± 0.03 mg m−2 yr−1, respectively, with a large variation among the different regions of China. The order for atmospheric deposition flux was Southwest China > Southeast China > North China > Northeast China > Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and rural area > urban area > background area. The concentrations of heavy metals in bulk deposition exhibit seasonal variation with higher levels observed during winter compared to summer and spring, which are closely associated with anthropogenic activities. The Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) results indicated that combustion, industrial emissions and traffic are the primary contributors to atmospheric deposition of heavy metals. The single factor pollution index (Pi) of heavy metals is consistently below 1, and the composite pollution index (Ni) is 0.16 across China, indicating that atmospheric heavy metal deposition is at a pollution-free level. The comprehensive potential ecological risk index of heavy metals is 11.8, with Cd exhibiting the highest single factor potential ecological risk index at 7.09, suggesting that more attention should be paid to Cd deposition in China. The present study reveals the spatial-temporal distribution pattern of atmospheric heavy metals deposition in China, identifying regional source characteristics and providing a theoretical foundation and strategies for reducing emissions of atmospheric pollutants.

Chemical characteristics, distribution patterns, and source apportionment of particulate elements and inorganic ions in snowpack in Harbin, China

Snowpack, which serves as a natural archive of atmospheric deposition of multiple pollutants, is a practical environmental media that can be used for assessing atmospheric records and input of the pollutants to the surface environments and ecosystems. A total of 29 snowpack samples were collected at 20 sampling sites covering three different functional areas of a major city (Harbin) in Northeast China. Two samples at the “snow layer” and one or two samples at the “particulate layer” were collected at each sampling site in the industrial areas characterized by multi-layer snowpack, and only one sample at the “snow layer” was collected at each sampling site in the cultural and recreational as well as agricultural areas. The snow contents of 31 elements (Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Y, Cd, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and Pb) and six major water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs, NH4+, K+, Ca2+, NO2−, NO3−, and SO42−) were analyzed. The total mass of the measured elements is dominated (95.8%–99.2%) by crustal elements. Heavy metals only account for 0.77%–4.07% of the total mass of the elements, but are occasionally close to or even above the standard limit in the “Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water” of China (GB3838-2002). SO42− and Ca2+ are the main anion and cation, accounting for 34.9%–81.1% and 1.43%–29.9%, respectively, of the measured total ions. Total atmospheric deposition of crustal elements and heavy metals is dominated by wet deposition in areas near the petrochemical plant and by dry deposition in areas near the cement plant. Coal combustion, industrial emissions, and traffic-related activities lead to the enrichment of heavy metals in the snowpacks of urban and suburban areas, while coal combustion and biomass burning contribute to pollution in rural areas. The cities and regions situated in the western, northwestern, northern, and northeastern directions from Harbin are potential source regions of these pollutant species.

Effect of chemical corrosion on the anti-pollution flashover performance of methyl-silica superhydrophobic coatings

Methyl-silica superhydrophobic coatings have the capability of providing anti-pollution flashover protection for outdoor electrical insulators. However, in practical applications, the deposition and dissolution of atmospheric pollutants on the coating generates acidic or alkaline ions and leads to chemical degradation of the coating's surface property, which in turn causes a decrease in the anti-pollution flashover performance of the coating. Currently, there is a lack of research on the hydrophobic degradation characteristics of superhydrophobic methyl-silica coatings induced by chemical corrosion. Meanwhile, it is not clear how chemical corrosion affects the anti-pollution flashover performance of methyl-silica superhydrophobic coatings. To address the above issues, the static water contact angle and sliding angle on the corroded methyl-silica superhydrophobic coatings were tested to reflect the surface hydrophobicity degradation, and the results were theoretically interpreted; the surface leakage current amplitudes of the coatings aged to different degrees were measured under dirty and wet conditions to characterize the anti-pollution flashover performance of the corroded coatings. The surface leakage current amplitudes of the aged methyl-silica superhydrophobic coating under different corrosion environment temperatures, different applied electric field strengths, and different wetting times of surface pollutants are measured to characterize the anti-pollution flashover performance of the corrosion-aged coating, and the influences of the above factors on the anti-pollution flashover performance of the methyl-silica superhydrophobic coating are analyzed.

High-resolution WRF forecasts in the SmartAQ system: Evaluation of the meteorological forcing used for PMCAMx predictions in an urban area

High-resolution modeling approaches are becoming a necessary step for enhancing regional air quality monitoring and forecasting. This study first evaluates the meteorological driver of the WRF- PMCAMx 1 × 1 km2 SmartAQ air quality prediction system and then assesses the impact of meteorological errors on the PM2.5 predictions. The comprehensive multi-variable verification on several timescales appraises the suitability of such a high-resolution modeling system in predicting the surface weather parameters in a major coastal urban area while gaining valuable insights into the model performance. The highest agreement between the observed and modelled values has been found for the actinometric and the thermodynamic variables, with the exception of the soil moisture which was systematically overestimated. WRF largely captures the variability of the observed values for the dynamic variables, showing better skill in the warm season, with a systematic overestimation though. The overall ability in predicting the rain events, important for the wet deposition of atmospheric pollutants is approximately 50%. Wind speed forecast errors contribute to the PM2.5 prediction errors, regardless of season and day/night hours. The impact of the wind errors is larger at almost all stations in the cold season when local emissions are elevated.

Adsorption and permeability of heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, and Cd) onto the adaxial cuticle of Ficus elastica leaf

Air pollution represents a serious worldwide problem as atmospheric deposition of pollutants widely affects human and wildlife health. Heavy metals are significant pollutants with high toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation. In an environment polluted by industry and transportation, deposits of heavy metals on the leaves and their subsequent uptake by the plant occur. The leaf cuticle is the most important barrier between plant tissue and the atmosphere. To understand the processes of adsorption of heavy metals and their diffusion into the leaf, adaxial cuticles of Ficus elastica were enzymatically isolated and used in batch adsorption experiments and permeability measurements using diffusion chambers. A demonstration experiment with a whole leaf was also carried out, which pointed to the real uptake of metals by the leaf. Cuticles were subjected to characterization by methods of elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. In the adsorption experiment, significant differences in the maximum adsorption capacity (Cd>Pb>Cr>Fe>Cu>Zn), and mechanism of adsorption (Langmuir model for Fe and Cr, Freundlich model for Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd) were found. The permeability of intact adaxial cuticle for studied heavy metals did not differ significantly. The extent of foliar uptake differed between metals, with the relatively highest uptake of Fe and Zn. The transport of metals in the leaf was also observed. It seems that adsorption to the leaf surface more than the permeability of the cuticle is a limiting factor for foliar uptake of heavy metals from atmospheric deposits.

Reconstruction of the Sources and Their Contributions to 129I in Northern Xinjiang, China.

Anthropogenic 129I, as a long-lived fission product and volatile radionuclide, can be used to investigate dispersion of air masses and the deposition of atmospheric pollution. Surface soil and soil core samples were collected from Northern Xinjiang and analyzed for 127I and 129I. The results show that 129I/127I atomic ratios in surface soil are inhomogeneous with a range of (2.07-106) × 10-9, and the maximum values in each soil core occurred at surface-subsurface layers (0-15 cm) at undisturbed sites. The dominant source of 129I in Northern Xinjiang is European nuclear fuel reprocessing plant (NFRP) releases, accounting for at least 70% of the total inventory; less than 20% of 129I originates from the global fallout of atmospheric nuclear weapons tests; less than 10% comes from the regional deposition of nuclear weapons tests at the Semipalatinsk site; and the regional deposition from the nuclear weapons tests at the Lop Nor site is insignificant. The European NFRP-derived 129I was transported to Northern Xinjiang via long-distance atmospheric dispersion with the westerlies through Northern Eurasia. The distribution of 129I in the surface soil in Northern Xinjiang is mainly controlled by topography, wind fields, land utilization, and vegetation coverage.

Lead isotope fingerprinting techniques help identify and quantify 3000 years of atmospheric lead pollution from Laguna Roya, northwestern Iberia

Legacy pollution research has established that over the past 3000 years, mining and metallurgical activities have resulted in widespread deposition of lead (Pb) pollution. However, there is still a limited understanding of how humans have impacted the long-term cycling of Pb in the environment. We present a 4,000-year lake sediment Pb isotope record from Laguna Roya, northwestern Iberia, that identifies and quantifies the predominant sources of atmospheric Pb pollution. For the first time, Pb isotopic compositions of ancient slag samples dated (∼600 BCE–200 CE) from a mining district in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula are compared to Pb isotope ratios of Pb pollution deposited contemporaneously in lake sediments. In addition, literature Pb isotope ratios of ores from mining regions throughout Iberia are compared with those of leaded gasoline and coal to identify additional sources of anthropogenic Pb. Deposition of atmospheric Pb pollution begins after 950 BCE, and until 1750 CE, the Pb isotopic composition most resembles the southwestern slag deposits, containing a mixture of Pb ores from southeast Iberia (up to 36%) and southwest Iberia (∼74%). Between 1750 and 1960 CE, Pb pollution is attributed to Pb mining in southcentral Iberia. After 1960 CE, the dominant Pb pollution source (∼85%) is again metal refining in southwestern Iberia, and only ∼15% is from leaded gasoline. Provenance and reconstruction of the temporal and spatial distribution of legacy Pb pollution further our understanding of how humans have affected the biogeochemical cycle of this toxic element in the environment over time.

Effect of Atmospheric Deposition of Pollutants on the Concentration of Trace Metals on Some Sun-Dried Food Items Dried at a Non-Vehicular Corridor in Ile-Ife Nigeria

The effect of atmospheric pollution on some sun-dried food items in Ile-Ife, Nigeria was investigated. Six farm produce: cassava (Manihot esculenta), plantain (Musa x paradisiaca), white yam (Dioscorea rotundata), yellow yam (Dioscorea cayenensis), red cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagittifolium) and sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) were exposed, for different hours (0 h, 8 h, 20 h, 32 h, 42 h), to the sun at a location far from vehicular activities. Exposed samples were digested and analyzed for Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn, Cd, and Pb using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). The concentration of Cu, in exposed samples, ranged from mg/kg in sweet potato (32 h exposure) to mg/kg in cocoyam (0 h exposure), while the concentration of Zn ranged from mg/kg in plantain (42 h exposure) to mg/kg in cocoyam (0 h exposure). On the other hand, the concentration of Mn ranged from mg/kg in plantain (42 h exposure) to mg/kg in sweet potato (0 h exposure). Furthermore, the concentration of Ni ranged from mg/kg in yellow yam (32 h exposure) to mg/kg in the plantain (32 h exposure). The concentration of Cd ranged from mg/kg in cassava (32 h exposure) to mg/kg in plantain (20 h exposure). In comparison, the concentration of Pb ranged from mg/kg in cassava (20 h exposure) to mg/kg in plantain (20 h exposure). The study observed that there was no particular pattern in the effect of atmospheric deposition of the pollutants, Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn, Cd, and Pb, on the concentration of these pollutants in the sun-dried farm products, for the different exposure hours. The study believed that the non-uniform pattern could result from differences in the concentrations of the pollutants in the atmosphere. It could also be a result of the different water retention abilities of the respective farm products, which may impact the absorption or evaporation of deposited pollutants on these farm products.

Trends in anthropogenic ammonia emissions in China since 1980: A review of approaches and estimations

Ammonia (NH3) emissions from intensive anthropogenic activities is an important component in the global nitrogen cycle that has triggered large negative impacts on air quality and ecosystems worldwide. An accurate spatially explicit high resolution NH3 emission inventory is essential for modeling atmospheric aerosol pollution and nitrogen deposition. However, existing NH3 emission inventories in China are still subject to several uncertainties. In this review we firstly summarize the widely used methods for the estimate of NH3 emissions and discuss their advantages and major limitations. Secondly, we present aggregated data from ten NH3 emission inventories to assess the trends in total anthropogenic NH3 emissions in China over the period 1980–2019. Almost emission estimates reported that NH3 emissions in China have doubled in the last four decades. We find a substantial differences in annual total NH3 emissions, spatial distributions and seasonal variations among selected datasets. In 2012, the median emission (Tg yr−1) and associated minimum-maximum ranges are 12.4 (8.5_17.2) for total emission, 9.9 (8.1_13.8) for agriculture, 0.3 (0.2_1.0) for industry, 0.4 (0.2_1.1) for residential and 0.1 (0.1_0.3) for transport and other emission of 1.5 (0.3_2.6). In general, peak emissions occur in summer but in different months, the higher NH3 emission intensities are concentrated in the NCP area, and in eastern and south-central China but distinct regional discrepancy among selected datasets. Finally, we made an analysis of the reasons and levels of difference in NH3 emission estimates with recommendations for improvement of China’s NH3 emission inventory.

Effects of coal-fired power plants on soil microbial diversity and community structures

Long-term deposition of atmospheric pollutants emitted from coal combustion and their effects on the eco-environment have been extensively studied around coal-fired power plants. However, the effects of coal-fired power plants on soil microbial communities have received little attention through atmospheric pollutant deposition and coal-stacking. Here, we collected the samples of power plant soils (PS), coal-stacking soils (CSS) and agricultural soils (AS) around three coal-fired power plants and background control soils (BG) in Huainan, a typical mineral resource-based city in East China, and investigated the microbial diversity and community structures through a high-throughput sequencing technique. Coal-stacking significantly increased (p < 0.05) the contents of total carbon, total nitrogen, total sulfur and Mo in the soils, whereas the deposition of atmospheric pollutants enhanced the levels of V, Cu, Zn and Pb. Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Thaumarchaeota, Thermoplasmata, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the dominant taxa in all soils. The bacterial community showed significant differences (p < 0.05) among PS, CSS, AS and BG, whereas archaeal and fungal communities showed significant differences (p < 0.01) according to soil samples around three coal-fired power plants. The predominant environmental variables affecting soil bacterial, archaeal and fungal communities were Mo-TN-TS, Cu-V-Mo, and organic matter (OM)-Mo, respectively. Certain soil microbial genera were closely related to multiple key factors associated with stacking coal and heavy metal deposition from power plants. This study provided useful insight into better understanding of the relationships between soil microbial communities and long-term disturbances from coal-fired power plants.

Microplastic in the Soil Environment – Classification and Sources in Relation to Research Conducted in Poland

In less than a century, plastics have gained enormous popularity and it is now difficult for us to imagine our lives without them. They are very widely used in industry, agriculture, medicine and many others, mainly due to their stability and low production costs - which contribute to a steady increase in demand worldwide. They biodegrade very slowly, and the limited and inappropriate recovery of this raw material from waste has led to a visible accumulation of residual polymers in the environment. As a result of physical, chemical and biological processes, e.g., ultraviolet (UV) radiation, weathering or mechanical abrasion, plastics degrade to fine particles - those less than 5 mm in size are called microplastics. They can be found in the natural environment in various morphological forms, e.g., as fibres, granules, scraps, spheres, particles or fragments, e.g., film, of primary or secondary origin. The presence of microplastics has been found all over the world, in all environments. Only recently has there been a broader focus on microplastics, which includes terrestrial systems where soils are an important part of the environment potentially exposed to contamination. Their main source in soils may be within agriculture (where composts, organic fertilizers, sewage sludge and mulching, as well as irrigation are used) plus transport, landfills and the deposition of atmospheric pollutants.

Trace Elements in Sediments of Two Lakes in the Valley of the Middle Courses of the Ob River (Western Siberia)

Lake sediments accumulate various pollutants and act as efficient natural archives suitable for reconstruction the environmental conditions of the past. In contrast to fairly good knowledge of mineral sediments in lakes of European and North America boreal lakes, Siberian lakes of the boreal zone remain quite poorly studied. In this work, two cores of lake sediments of the Ob River valley were investigated. Elemental analyses were carried out on the sediments, losses on ignition were determined, and the rate of sedimentation was measured from the activity of Pb-210 and Cs-137. According to the content of organic matter, bottom sediments belong to different types: clastic (Lake Inkino, located in the Ob River floodplain) and organogenic (Lake Shchuchie on the second terrace). The rate of sedimentation in Lake Shchuchie is several times higher than that in Lake Inkino. The sediments of Lake Inkino are similar in composition (including the pattern of rare earth elements) to the suspended particulate matter of the Ob River as well as to average detrital matter of the upper continental crust. Sediments of Lake Shchuchie (sapropels) are enriched in a number of heavy metals. Based on the elemental composition, signs of diagenetic processes and authigenic mineral formation were determined, such as accumulation of carbonates and the formation of manganese oxides and hydroxides. There is an enhanced recent input of Cr, Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, Sb, Pb, and Bi in the upper layers of sediments as a result of atmospheric anthropogenic pollutant deposition.

Integrating water quality monitoring and diatom community trends to determine landscape‐level change in protected lakes

AbstractLakes in protected or remote regions are not immune to anthropogenic impacts and face a variety of stressors ranging from atmospheric deposition of pollutants to global climate change. Monitoring programs in these lakes can be limited in scope due to sampling logistics, leaving an incomplete picture of how the systems may be impacted by environmental stressors. Here, we used diatoms as early indicators of change in relatively undisturbed lakes from five national park units in the US Great Lakes region. Surface sediment samples were collected repeatedly over more than a decade to analyze the diatom community turnover. This diatom community assemblage data were compared with the measured water quality data collected over the same period in order to identify the predominant drivers of ecological change. Even though the parks in this study span two biomes, and lake characteristics vary between and within parks, we found synchronicity in measured water quality trends and diatom responses. Changes in the thermal regime and water‐column mixing appeared to drive much of the change across parks, although much of the diatom turnover also followed a sulfate or pH gradient. Nutrients did not appear to play a major role in diatom community change. This method of using diatoms in conjunction with water quality monitoring allows for an integrated response over a number of years and provides managers with a complementary tool to determine which environmental parameters are having the biggest effect on lake ecology.

Ecological risk assessment of metal and hydrocarbon pollution in sediments from an urban tropical estuary: Tijuca lagoon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

Urban tropical lagoons are often impacted by eutrophication, metal, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination, but the toxicity of their bottom sediments is still poorly investigated in South America. Aiming to contribute to filling this gap, a sediment quality assessment was conducted in the Tijuca Lagoon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) using different lines of evidence (LOEs) including sediment characterization, determination of metals and PAHs, and acute toxicity testing with burrowing amphipods (Tiburonella viscana). Mud and organic matter contents played a crucial role in contaminant distribution along the lagoon. The concentrations of PAH were generally low (mean ΣPAH = 795.42 ± 1146.2ng/g; n = 23), but a contamination hotspot of light PAH compounds was identified. Such PAHs were mainly pyrolytic, probably related to the deposition of atmospheric pollution, although petrogenic compounds also occur in the lagoon. The data indicated the occurrence of geochemical anomalies of Zn, Cu, Pb, and Hg (mean values = 176.9 ± 91.6, 45.1 ± 21.3, 35.2 ± 15.0, 0.1442 ± 0.0893mg/kg, respectively; n = 23), probably associated with industrial wastes, garbage deposition, urban runoff, and domestic sewage contributions. The mortality of T. viscana was significant for more than 85% of the samples (mean mortality = 70.3 ± 26.0%; n = 23), but it was not significantly correlated with PAH and metal concentrations. On the other side, domestic sewage contributions and eutrophication seem to play a relevant role in sediment toxicity. Actually, the toxicity observed in the tests seems to be due to the simultaneous influence of multiple toxicants and their combined effects on the organisms. Such stressors may include not only metals, PAH, and eutrophication but also chemicals not evaluated in this study, such as hormones, pharmaceuticals and personal care compounds, perfluorocompounds, detergents, and others.

Impact of atmospheric dry deposition of nutrients on phytoplankton pigment composition and primary production in the coastal Bay of Bengal.

Atmospheric deposition of pollutants decreases pH and increases the nutrient concentration in the surface water. To examine its impact on coastal phytoplankton composition and primary production, monthly atmospheric aerosol samples were mixed with coastal waters in the microcosm experiments. These experiments suggested that the biomass of Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceae and Chlorophyceae were increased and primary production of the coastal waters increased by 3 to 19% due to the addition of aeolian nutrients. The increase in primary production displayed significant relation with a concentration of sulphate and nitrate in the atmospheric aerosols suggesting that both decreases in pH and fertilization enhanced primary production. The impact of acidification on primary production was found to be 22%, whereas 78% was contributed by the nutrient increase. The atmospheric pollution is increasing rapidly over the northern Indian Ocean since past two decades due to rapid industrialization. Hence, it is suggested that the impact of atmospheric pollution on the coastal ecosystem must be included in the numerical models to predict possible changes in the coastal ecosystem due to climate change.

Heavy Metal Atmospheric Deposition Study in Azerbaijan Based on Moss Technique and Neutron Activation Analysis

Abstract The results of this investigation show that Azerbaijan industries and agricultural sector provide considerable anthropogenic impact on the environment of Caucasus. The use of moss biomonitoring technique and neutron activation analysis (NAA) is a first attempt to study heavy metal atmospheric deposition in Azerbaijan, a country different relief and climate. The study was undertaken in the summer of 2015 of atmospheric deposition of man-made heavy metal pollutants in the area of mining and processing plant in Gadabay and Dashkasan mininig district. At the same time samples were collected from the Goygol State Reserve in the Lesser Caucasus not far from the city of Ganja. A total 85 moss samples (predominantly Pleurozium schreberi) collected in both environmentally contrast area. Elemental determination was carried out by epithermal neutron activation analysis (ENAA) at the reactor IBR-2 of Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (FLNP JINR). For the first time 44 elemental concentrations were determined (Na, Mg, Al, Si, Cl, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Mo, Ag, Cd, In, Sb, I, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Tm, Yb, Hf, Ta, W, Au, Th, U). Multivariate statistical analysis of the analytical results obtained will make it possible to identify the main sources of pollution and to assess the role of long-range transport of pollutants.

Complex chemical cocktail, containing insecticides diazinon and permethrin, drives acute toxicity to crustaceans in mountain lakes

Mountain lakes have long been perceived as pristine environments. However, atmospheric deposition of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have been shown to expose these sensitive ecosystems to chemical pollution. Little is known on how this pollution impacts aquatic ecosystems at high altitudes. We combined passive sampling with liquid and gas chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry (LC- and GC-HRMS) to screen the water of eight lakes in three different regions of the French Pyrenees. In total, we screened for 479 organic chemicals including POPs, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), legacy and current-use pesticides, biocides, and musk fragrances. We detected a complex cocktail of 151 individual chemicals and used their toxic unit summation (ΣTU) to assess toxicity for crustaceans and algae. While risks for algae never reached chronic risks, this was always the case for crustaceans. Acute toxic risk thresholds for crustaceans were even exceeded in several of our sites. At sites with acute toxic risk levels (> 0.1 ΣTU) crustaceans were completely absent or showed a low abundance. We conclude that crustaceans were at least partly impacted by the high toxic risks driven by the insecticides diazinon and permethrin. These drugs are widely used to protect livestock from blue tongue disease transmitted by sucking insects, suggesting free roaming livestock as local source. Our results provide important evidence on toxic chemical pollution in relatively remote mountain areas, with important consequences for aquatic mountain ecosystems.

Changes in Soil Chemistry After 17 Years in Urban and Rural Forest Patches

Cycling of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) is an important ecosystem service that forest soils provide. Humans influence these biogeochemical processes through the deposition of atmospheric pollutants and site disturbances. One way to study these potential anthropogenic trajectories is through long-term monitoring in association with human-caused environmental gradients such as urban-rural gradients. The objective of this study was to characterize changes in surface soil chemistry of urban, suburban and rural forest patches in the Baltimore Metropolitan area. Soil composite samples (0–10 cm) were analyzed for macro- and micronutrients, pH, and C. A total of 12 sites in forest patches dominated by white oak (Quercus alba) and tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) were established in 2001, and resampled in 2018. We hypothesized that after almost two decades (1) concentrations of N, Ca, and P, as well as soil pH would be higher, especially in urban forest patches due to local deposition; (2) S levels would be lower due to decreased regional atmospheric deposition and; (3) total soil C would increase overall, but the rate of increase would be higher in the urban end of the gradient due to increased NPP. Overall, means of Ca concentration, pH, and C:N ratios significantly changed from 2001 to 2018. Calcium increased by 35% from 622 to 844 mg kg–1, pH increased from 4.1 to 4.5, and C:N ratios decreased from 17.8 to 16.7. Along the gradient, Ca, N, P, and S were statistically significant with Ca concentration higher in the urban sites; S and N higher in the suburban sites; and P lower in the urban sites. Confounding factors, such as different geologic parent material may have affected these results. However, despite the unique site conditions, patterns of surface soil chemistry in space and time implies that local and regional factors jointly affect soil development in these forest patches. The increase in pH and Ca is especially notable because other long-term studies demonstrated changes in the opposite direction.
