The Role of India towards Economic-Growth and Development of BRICS Member Countries

BRICS is one of the Membership Based Organisations which encompasses Brazil, Russia, India China and South Africa accordingly. Thus, the Acronym BRICS entails the initial of the aforementioned countries who come together thereby contributing economic quota by each member in order to accomplished certain goals and objectives. This paper explored the roles of India as a member country towards enhancing the economic growth and development of member states. In an attempt to do so, the paper employed Theory of International Economic Cooperation in its Theoretical Framework of Analysis. Notwithstanding, the paper adopted Content analysis otherwise known as documentary analysis in its methods of data collection. However, statistical data were collected, presented and analysed for empirical purposes. The paper concluded that, the role played by the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India which coordinated a Joint BRICS Study on the “State of World Economy and the Role of the BRICS countries has yielded a great impact on economic growth and development of the member countries.

Public private partnership in tourism sector: An exploratory study of Assam tourism industry

Public Private Partnership concept of infrastructural development and management of resources has been a huge success across sectors. It is effective and efficient in a lot of areas of operations. Both the government as well as private stakeholders working in joint ventures are in a win-win situation in the PPP model of operation. Tourism sector is no different when it comes to public private partnership. Tourism is not confined to a single sector, rather embraces other sectors like accommodation, transportation, communication, entertainment, events, technology, destination etc. It is one of the sectors where huge investment is required and government alone cannot fill the void. The main aim of the present research paper is to examine the role of public private partnership model in Assam tourism industry. The present study is exploratory and descriptive in nature and based on secondary data. The secondary data has been collected from various journals, websites, newspapers and articles, publications of Ministry of Tourism, UNWTO, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and Asian Development Bank (ADB), Niti Ayog, Department of Economic Affairs, PPP Cell and Ministry of Finance.

Examining the key drivers for regional revitalization based upon social network analysis: A case study of Badouzi in Taiwan

Shrinking cities has become a popular topic in recent years. According to the world population statistic from United Nations, there are more than 7 billion people in the world, and it is expected that the population is approaching 9.7 billion in 2050. Although the population continues growing, the population growth rate declines. In fact, it is expected that the world’s population will almost stop growing by 2100. In Taiwan, we are facing adverse population growth rate and aging issues. Therefore, regional revitalization has received attention in the worldwide. This study attempts to explore key driving forces of regional revitalization in Keelung Badouzi, Taiwan. This study applies social network analysis to explore the key driving forces in the study area. The results show that there are two kinds of key men within the Badouzi regional revitalization including leadership and expertise assistantship, two kinds of key industries as well including food and tourism boat, key groups including tourism industrial promotion association, national museum of marine science & technology, department of economic affairs, Keelung City Government, National Taiwan Ocean University, and fisherman's association, the key activities including beach cleanup, fish fry releasing, oceanic festival, and fish eating lecture.

This article is to summarise key highlights of volume I of Economic Survey – 2019-20.

The K number

AbstractSome books printed in occupied Holland during the Second World War carry a so-called K number. This was long supposed to signify approval by the Kultuurkamer, a ‘wrong’ (i.e. a pro-German or, as in this case, puppet) body that was set up in November 1941 by the country’s German governor or Reichskommissar. It has now become clear that this is incorrect: the K number was in fact introduced in July 1941 as a bureaucratic means of monitoring and controlling the supply and rationing of all printing paper by the Dutch Department of Economic Affairs, and was a consequence of pre-war Dutch rationing legislation dating from 1939.

The Life and Work of Professor Sir Hans Singer: An Appreciation

ABSTRACT Hans Singer, who died on 26 February 2006 at the age of 95, was one of the most highly respected and internationally recognized development economists. He was one of that small band of pioneers who stimulated so many ideas that engaged the attention of the world community over much of the last century. As an economic activist, few people have been such indefatigable thinkers about the problems of developing countries and persistent instigators of ways of overcoming them. Instinctively practical rather than ideological he based his theoretical work on observations, not dogma. He was one of the main intellectual architects of post-war development strategies. Educated under the two great economists, Schumpeter and Keynes, he studied unemployment and poverty first hand in Britain in the 1930s, and helped establish the United Nations Department of Economic Affairs. He went on to devote his life not just to the academic study of development economics and the problems of developing countries but also to finding practical solutions. The scale, dimension, and diversity of his 450 publications, produced over seven decades, are truly remarkable. Among his numerous positions and contributions, he was a member of the CJDS Advisory Board for many years. This appreciation attempts to summarize his main achievements.

Turning Point in the Evolution of Soft Financing: The United Nations and the World Bank

ABSTRACT Half a century age, a drawn-out and divisive debate that lasted almost a decade (1949–59) took place at the United Nations (UN) over a proposal to set up a Special United Nations Fund for Economic Development (SUNFED) to provide soft financing for the development of the UN and the World Bank, as it came to be known, in the economic development of developing countries. Had the proposal been approved, it would have given the UN decisive leadership. In the event, opposition mainly from the United States but also from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) led to the establishment of the International Development Association (IDA), the soft financing arm of the World Bank, in part as a foil to stop SUNFED, greatly strengthening the Bank's role at the expense of the UN. This account of what took place is based largely on archival material in the UN Archives and Records Centre in New York, the two histories of the World Bank, and the role played by a senior member of the UN Department of Economic Affairs, Hans (now Professor Sir Hans) Singer, who was intimately involved in the attempt to establish SUNFED.

The rise and fall of the department of economic affairs 1964–69: British government and indicative planning

In October 1964, the Labour government created a Department of Economic Affairs as part of its interest in indicative planning. Its creation coincided with an intense interest in the reform of machinery of government. The origins of the ‘DEA concept’ can reliably be traced to discussions that took place in the Labour party from 1963 onwards. The DEA's demise in 1969 has been attributed to’ a range of factors, including the timing of devaluation, the power of the Treasury, the artificial separation between long‐term and short‐term functions, personalities, and the failure to resolve demarcation disputes between the two departments.

Nixon's Administrative Presidency Revisited: Aberration or Watershed?

On 5 January 1973, one month after his reelection to a second term, Richard Nixon described for Congress a major restructuring of his cabinet and White House staff. Nixon began by emphasizing his determination to “revitalize and streamline the Federal Government in preparation for America's third century,” a reference to his effort of the preceding two years to replace seven domestic executive departments and several agencies with four “superdepartments”: a Department of Natural Resources, a Department of Community Development, a Department of Economic Affairs, and a Department of Human Resources. The failure of Congress to report out of committee any of the four bills Nixon submitted in March 1971 to create these superdepartments was now prompting the president to act unilaterally to “reorder … the timeworn and in many cases obsolete relationships among top staff and line officials” in an effort to realize “the broadening of policy perspectives on the part of top managers and advisers” and improvements in “managerial effectiveness” he had hoped to achieve through comprehensive reorganization of the executive branch.

The ‘Green Paper’ On the Development Areas

The publication on 5 April 1967 by the Department of Economic Affairs and the Treasury of the paper containing a proposal for a regional employment premium is a notable event for at least two reasons. In the first place it establishes an important precedent in what is essentially the budgetary field by putting forward a government proposal for public discussion in advance of the introduction of any specific measure of legislation. In the second place it provides a brief and lucid analysis of the problem of the development areas as a background for the proposals that it develops.

In quick succession, three sets of figures about the possible future of the British economy have been published. In July, the latest in the series of Programme for Growth volumes, describing the research being undertaken in Cambridge under the directorship of Professor J. R. N. Stone, appeared under the title Exploring 1970. The Cambridge calculations (hereafter referred to as SAM—Social Accounting Matrix) start with the economy as it was in 1960 and present a possibility for 1970 which can be expressed in terms of annual compound rates of growth over the decade for sectors of the national product and for particular industries. The National Institute study, published in September as The British Economy in 1975, (hereafter referred to as BECKERMAN) also starts with the actuality of 1960 but extends the look into the future as far as 1975. The National Plan, published in September, and prepared by the Department of Economic Affairs (hereafter called PLAN), takes the actual figures of 1964 as the base and looks forward to 1970.
