Quantitative aspects of rotavirus excretion in childhood diarrhoea.

The amount of rotavirus (antigen) in diarrhoeal stools was determined from serially diluted faecal specimens using a solid phase radioimmunoassay (RIA) method. The acute stage RIA titres for rotavirus antigen ranged from 1:200 to 1:200 000 with a mean titre of 1:2 936 in a group of 16 infants with age range 2 to 14 months and 1:4 703 in a group of 12 children aged 25 to 94 months. In the younger age-group the diarrhoea lasted longer (mean 7.8 days) than in the older children (mean 5.4 days) despite the fact that the quantity of rotavirus was similar. In most of the younger infants there was either no demonstrable rotavirus present at the time of cessation of diarrhoea, or the amount of virus was on the decrease. In contrast, among the older children there were cases with a high titre of rotavirus in the stools a few days after the diarrhoea had ceased. These children were considered as potential spreaders of rotavirus infection in the community. However, none of the long-term follow-up stool specimens, collected 28 to 47 days after the onset of diarrhoea, were positive for rotavirus RIA.

Mental health of medical school applicants

This study was of the role of admissions committees as it relates to the mental health of applicants. Two-part questionnaires were sent to 115 medical schools. The first part explored the composition of the committee. In most schools the dean selected the members, attempting to obtain equal representation from clinical and basic science departments; most of the schools had one or more psychiatrists on the committee. The second part focused on the policy for applicants with former mental health problems. Over one-third of the committees asked about previous or present mental illness or therapy. Ninety percent of the schools had no policy or guidelines for using such information; instead, most relied on psychiatric interview or outside reports in making admissions decisions. The impact of federal legislation regarding the handicapped on admissions procedures is discussed. Since more students with previous or current psychiatric problems may be admitted, schools must be prepared to respond to their needs as fully as they now respond to other medical problems.

Teaching a core course in occlusion

Summary The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, through analysis of its curriculum, completely revised its undergraduate dental program. A major outgrowth of this change has been the development of a four-year core course in occlusion with approximately 400 hours of lecture, seminar, clinic, and laboratory time allotted. The first year of the occlusion course began officially in the fall of 1967. Logistically, the occlusion program is administered as a separate division with its own director and budget. It has a separate faculty which is supplemented by representative members from other clinical and basic science departments. An in-service faculty training program in occlusion has developed through this association which has helped to coordinate clinical teaching in the third and fourth years of the predoctoral program. Conceptually and philosophically, the program is devoted to developing an early appreciation of the functioning of the healthy stomatognathic system prior to starting a study of occlusal pathology and therapy. The teaching of occlusion should be instituted in the curriculum as early as possible, be integrated with all clinical and basic science disciplines, and approach therapy from a rational, realistic basis. The conceptual approach to occlusal therapy should be carried out and blended into all forms of treatment, not just the most sophisticated or most advanced ones. As the program has matured over the years, a definite change in the students' approach to clinical dentistry has been recognized. There is an increased awareness of the causes of occlusal pathology and methods of managing them.

Koi Herpes Virus (KHV) Disease

Koi herpes virus (KHV), a viral disease highly contagious to fish, may cause significant morbidity (sickness or disease) and mortality in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) (Hedrick et al., 2000; OATA, 2001). This species is raised as a foodfish in many countries and has been selectively bred for the ornamental fish industry, where it is known as koi. Historically, the first outbreak of KHV was reported in 1998 and confirmed in 1999 in Israel. Since then, other cases have been confirmed in the United States, Europe and Asia (Hedrick et al., 2000; OATA, 2001; Anonymous, 2003). This information sheet is intended to inform veterinarians, biologists, culturists, and hobbyists about KHV. Incorporating Pet Fish Into Your Small Animal Practice

There are several factors that make it advantageous to consider adding pet fish medicine to your small animal practice at the present time. Over the past five to ten years, some veterinary schools have begun to incorporate aquatic animal medicine into their curricula. Many recent graduates have had some level of exposure to fish medicine as part of their veterinary education, and some individuals have had one or more intensive classes and/or clinical rotations in fish medicine. Clostridial (Blackleg) Diseases of Cattle

Diseases including blackleg, malignant edema, sord, black disease, red water, and three kinds of enterotoxemia are all caused by a genus of bacteria called Clostridium. These bacteria have three important qualities: they multiply only in the absence of oxygen; they have the ability to survive adverse conditions by transforming into highly resistant forms called spores; and they release potent toxins during the process of multiplying. It is the combination of these three characteristics that make the clostridia highly dangerous. A Systematic Approach to Solving Hatchability and Chick Quality Problems

A program involving routine analyses of incubating eggs and hatch residue provides a powerful monitoring and diagnostic tool to breeder, broiler, and hatchery managers. This program would allow managers to stay abreast of many problems with breeder performance, egg management, and broiler grow-out. An organized, scheduled program would verify that the processes of egg production and incubation are being done correctly. Data generated by egg breakout analyses provide information of the flock history, details of breeder and hatcherymanagement, and anticipated early broiler performance. Aquarium Setup and Maintainence

An aquarium can be defined as a container that holds water and is designed in such a way that living aquatic organisms can be maintained over an extended period of time. Aquariums vary tremendously in size and design. They can be as simple as a betta bowl or as complex as a multi-million gallon commercial exhibit. When considering an aquarium it is important to contemplate where it will be located, which species will be maintained and what type of budget will be available. In general, larger aquariums are easier to work with than smaller ones. Greater investment is required, however, and a greater allocation of space is also needed.
