Preventive Effects of Laser Irradiation and Dentin Bonding Agent Application on Tooth Discoloration Induced by Mineral Trioxide Aggregate

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the pre-application of dentin bonding agent and laser application on the prevention of tooth discoloration caused by (MTA) in the presence of blood. Fifty extracted human anterior teeth were prepared by standardizing root lengths to 10 mm and shaping root canals. Specimens were divided into five groups (n = 10) based on the treatment applied to the pulp chamber dentin wall: Group 1/no surface treatment; Group 2/Optibond FL; Group 3/Clearfil SE; Group 4/Optibond Universal adhesive application; Group 5/Nd:YAG laser application. Root canals were filled with fresh human blood below the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ), followed by ProRoot MTA, and collagen barrier placement. Color changes were monitored using a spectrophotometer at 0, 7, 30, 90, and 180 days post MTA placement. Color differences (∆E) were calculated and analyzed using two-factor mixed-design ANOVA with Sidak adjustment at p = 0.05. The degree of coloration increased with time within each group (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed between Optibond FL and Optibond Universal within each time interval, or between Clearfill SE Bond and the control group (p > 0.05). When compared to the control group, the Nd YAG group exhibited the least degree of discoloration in all time intervals (p < 0.05). Although the Nd:YAG laser had promising results, none of the methods can guarantee a 100% prevention of discoloration resulting from tooth discoloration caused by MTA-blood contact.

An in Vitro Study of the Effects of Different Dentin Bonding Agents on the Prevention of Tooth Discoloration and the Sealing Ability of Calcium Silicate-Based Cement in Regenerative Endodontic Procedures

This study aimed to compare the effects of applying different types of dentin bonding agents (DBAs) on tooth and on the sealing ability of CSC in regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs). Specimens were made from 120 human first premolars and categorized into the following groups based on the presence and the type of DBA: Group I, no bonding; Group II, One-Step; Group III, Clearfil SE Bond; and Group IV, Single Bond Universal. Subsequently, the groups were categorized into Subgroup a and Subgroup b, in which Endocem MTA® Premixed Regular and Biodentine were used, respectively. The CIE L*a*b* on the photos taken prior to TAP placement (S0), 1 week after TAP placement (S1), 2 weeks after TAP placement (S2), 4 weeks after TAP placement (S3) and 2 weeks after CSC placement (S4) was used to assess discoloration. The samples were submerged in a 2% methylene blue solution and magnified by 30 times under a stereomicroscope to assess microleakage. The application of DBA during REP reduced crown discoloration, while Biodentine showed minimal discoloration with or without DBA and regardless of the DBA type. Additionally, the application of DBA did not increase microleakage.

Adhesive systems applied to dentin substrate under electric current: systematic review.

ObjectivesThe purpose of this systematic review was to collect and discuss the technique of adhesive systems application on dentin substrate under electric current.Materials and MethodsThe first search strategy was based on data available at PubMed, LILACS, Scielo, Scopus, and Cochrane Library, using a combination of descriptors such as “dentin bond agents OR adhesive system AND electric current OR electrobond” or “dentin bonding agents OR dentin bonding agent application OR adhesive system AND electric current OR electrobond”, with no limit regarding the publication year. The second search strategy was based on the articles' references found previously. An additional search strategy was applied that concerned the proposed theme in the SBU-UNICAMP (Unicamp's Library System Institutional Repository).ResultsTwelve studies published between 2006 and 2020 were found. The analyses of the selected studies showed that the use of electric current during adhesive systems application on dentin, whether conventional or self-conditioning, increases resinous monomer infiltration in the dentin substrate, which improves the hybridization processes and the bond strength of the restorative material to dentin.ConclusionsDespite the favorable results related to the use of this technique, there is still no specific protocol for the application of adhesive systems under electric current.

Effect of Different Cavity Disinfectants on Marginal Sealing Ability of a Seventh-generation Dentin Bonding Agent: An In Vitro Study

To determine the effect of three different cavity disinfectants (2% chlorhexidine gluconate, 2.5% sodium hypochlorite, and 2% iodine solution) on microleakage in a seventh-generation dentin-bonding system. Class V cavity was prepared on 50 extracted molars (n = 50). The respective experimental groups were treated with cavity disinfectants and Adper Easy One Bond. Preparations without cavity disinfectants worked as negative control and those with neither disinfectant nor dentin-bonding resin application worked as positive controls. After the cavity preparations were restored with resin composite (Filtek™ Z 350), the teeth were then subjected to dye leakage tests. Microleakage was assessed for both occlusal and gingival margins, using a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using (ANOVA; Kruskal-Wallis) test. No statistically significant differences were observed among 2% chlorhexidine gluconate, 2.5% sodium hypochlorite, and 2% iodine and also no statistically significant differences were observed between occlusal and gingival margins of groups. (1) 2% chlorhexidine gluconate, 2.5% sodium hypochlorite, and 2% iodine produced significantly higher microleakage when used with seventh-generation dentin-bonding agent. (2) 2% chlorhexidine gluconate produced lesser microleakage in comparison with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite and 2% iodine. (3) The gingival margins exhibited greater microleakage than occlusal margins. The application of cavity disinfectants on prepared tooth before the application of dentin-bonding agent could help to reduce the potential risk of residual caries and postoperative sensitivity.

Prevention of coronal discoloration induced by root canal sealer remnants using Dentin Bonding agent: An in vitro study.

Introduction:Among the various causes of tooth discoloration after root canal treatment, percolation of sealer remnants into the dentinal tubules of the pulp chamber is the most common cause.Objectives:The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of dentin bonding agent (DBA) in preventing coronal discoloration caused by four different root canal sealers- MTA Fillapex, Sealapex, Zical and Z. O. B seal at different time intervals by measuring chromatic alterations using digital images analysis method.Methodology:Ninety mandibular premolars were collected and sectioned at 1 mm below the cementoenamel junction. Standard access cavity preparations of dimensions (depth-3 mm, width-0.8 mm, and length-3 mm) were prepared with a No. 245 bur through the cervical access. Following the standard irrigation protocol, specimens were then randomly divided into nine groups (four groups without DBA [1–4] +4 groups with DBA [5–8] +1 negative control [9]). In Groups 1–4, four different root canal sealers (MTA Fillapex, Sealapex, Zical, and Z.O.B seal) were applied to the walls of the pulp chamber. For Groups 5–8, the samples were etched with 37% phosphoric acid and DBA application was done before the respective root canal sealer application. The cervical access in all specimens was sealed using glass ionomer cement. Digital photographs were taken under standard lighting and environmental conditions at different time intervals: preprocedural, postprocedural, and after 1, 2, 3, and 4 months. These images were analyzed using Adobe Photoshop CS6 from which laboratory values and subsequently Delta E values were obtained.Results:Statistical analysis performed using repeated measures ANOVA and post hoc Tukey's tests show that the groups with DBA application had significantly lower mean Delta E values (P < 0.05) compared to the groups without DBA application.Conclusion:DBAs applied to the dentinal walls of the pulp chamber before obturation can effectively reduce the sealer-induced coronal discoloration.

Prevention of coronal discoloration induced by regenerative endodontic treatment in an ex vivo model.

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of sealing the pulp chamber walls with a dentin-bonding agent (DBA) on prevention of discoloration induced by regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) in an ex vivo model. Ninety-six bovine incisors were prepared and randomly divided into two groups. In one group, the pulp chamber walls were sealed with DBA before placement of triple antibiotic paste (TAP) containing minocycline inside the root canals, but in the other group, DBA was not applied. After 4weeks, the root canals were filled with human blood and each group was then randomly divided into four subgroups (n=12) according to the endodontic cements placed over the blood clot (ProRoot MTA, OrthoMTA, RetroMTA, or Biodentine). The color changes (∆E) were measured at different steps. The data were analyzed using t test and two-way ANOVA. The specimens in which dentinal walls of pulp chamber were sealed with DBA showed significantly less coronal discoloration at each step of regenerative treatment (p<0.001). However, application of DBA did not completely prevent the clinically perceptible coronal color change. Sealing the blood clot with different endodontic cements did not result in significant difference in coronal discoloration (p>0.05). Sealing the pulp chamber walls before insertion of TAP decreased coronal discoloration following REP using different endodontic cements but did not prevent it. Discoloration of teeth undergoing REPs is an unfavorable outcome. Considering the significant contribution of TAP containing minocycline to the coronal tooth discoloration even after sealing the pulp chamber walls, the revision of current guidelines in relation to the use of TAP with minocycline might need to be revised.

Microleakage of different provisionalization techniques for class I inlays

Background/purposeTo investigate the effects of different provisionalization methods on the microleakage of class I inlay cavities. Materials and methodsClass I inlay cavities were prepared on human molars (n = 60). Teeth were divided into six groups (n = 10). In the first group (ST-C), Structur 2SC (ST) was used with a provisional luting agent, and in the second group (SY-C), Systemp Inlay (SY) was directly applied and light-polymerized. In the remaining four groups, cavities in the third (SB-ST) and fourth (OS-ST) groups were, respectively, pretreated with the bonding agents, Single Bond (SB) and One Step Plus (OS), and the fifth (SB-SY) and sixth (OS-SY) groups were pretreated with the same bonding agents. The third and fourth groups were then restored with ST and the fifth and sixth groups with SY. The teeth were subjected to thermal cycling and immersed in a 0.5% basic fuchsin solution for 24 hours. Specimens were sectioned and examined for leakage. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U tests (P < 0.01). The interface between the provisional material and dentin was observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). ResultsGroups treated with a bonding agent (SB-SY and OS-SY) before placement of the light-polymerized provisional material had significantly less microleakage (P < 0.01). No statistical differences were found between leakage scores of the remaining groups. The OS-SY group displayed the best cavity wall-inlay adaptation under SEM. ConclusionThe microleakage in class I inlay cavities could be reduced by the application of dentin-bonding agents after cavity preparation followed by the placement of light-polymerized provisional restorative materials.

Effect of Dentin Bonding Agent on the Prevention of Tooth Discoloration Produced by Mineral Trioxide Aggregate

Objective. Determination of the effect of dentin bonding agent (DBA) on the prevention of tooth discoloration produced by mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Methods. 50 teeth were endodontically treated and after removal of 3 mm of obturating materials were divided into five groups. In white MTA (WMTA) and grey MTA (GMTA) groups, these materials were placed in root canal below the orifice. In DBA + WMTA and DBA + GMTA groups, DBAs were applied in the access cavity. Then, 3 mm of WMTA and GMTA was placed. The last 10 teeth served as control. All of teeth were restored and color measurement was recorded for each specimen at this time and 6 months later. Results. The mean tooth discoloration in WMTA and GMTA groups was significantly more than DBA + WMTA and DBA + GMTA groups, respectively. There was no significant difference between DBA + WMTA and DBA + GMTA groups and control group. Conclusion. Application of DBA before MTA may prevent tooth discoloration.

Resistance of two dentin-bonding agents and a dentin densensitizer to acid erosion in vitro

Objectives: To determine the resistance of two dentin-bonding agents (DBAs) and a dentin desensitizer to simulated dental erosion. Methods: Twenty teeth in each of three groups of selected premolars, with exposed cervical dentin, were treated with one of three dentin surface treatment systems: Gluma Desensitizer (Heraeus Kulzer (UK) Ltd), One Coat Bond (Whaledent (UK) Ltd), and Optibond FL (Kerr (UK) Ltd) and exposed to water (control) and an erosive challenge (Coca Cola ®) for 14 days. Sequential tracings of the specimens were taken, superimposed and the mean reduction in densensitizer or DBA thickness and or tooth loss determined. Results: A mean loss of 77 μm (s.d. 14.6 μm) of tooth tissue over the untreated sites following 14 days exposure to Coca Cola ® was observed. The application of DBAs, as opposed to Gluma Desensistizer alone, over exposed dentin surfaces afforded substantial protection against erosion by Coca Cola ® over the period of study. The mean change in vertical profile of teeth treated with a DBA was 20 μm (s.d. 14.7 μm), almost four times less than that seen over untreated sites. Significance: With the exception of Gluma Desensitizer, which was lost completely, One Coat Bond and Optibond FL demonstrated levels of acid dissolution resistance, which would be of potential value clinically.
