Comparative assessment of the prognostic value of laser assisted root canal treatment and conventional root canal treatment

: Endodontics is a branch of dentistry which deals with complex architecture of dental root associated pathology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental pulp and associated periradicular tissue. The aim of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis of prognostic value of laser-assisted root canal treatment (LART) and conventional root canal treatment (RCT).: A retrospective analysis of 50 cases equally divided between Laser-assisted root canal treatment (LART) and conventional RCT, was done using Clinician-reported Outcome (ClinRo) protocol by modifying Chugal et al scoring criteria. : Statistical analysis using Mann-Whitney U tests revealed no significant correlation between gender and total treatment quality score. However, significant correlation was found between treatment modalities, and with laser assisted RCT treatment it showed a superior correlation and better prognostic results.: The radiographic analysis focused on periapical lesions and root canal filling quality. Laser-assisted RCT demonstrated a higher proportion of complete healing cases for periapical lesions and improved root canal filling quality compared to conventional RCT. : The study supports the potential benefit of laser assisted RCT in non-surgical endodontic interventions. Laser-assisted RCT showed better prognosis in terms of periapical healing and root canal filling quality when compared to conventional RCT. The study encourages further research and clinical validation to establish laser assisted RCT as a viable option in endodontic therapy.

Evaluation of cytotoxicity impacts of combined methylene blue-mediated photodynamic therapy and intracanal antibiotic medicaments on dental stem cells

Root canal therapy is a predominant method for treatment of dental pulp and periapical diseases. Conventional methods such as mechanical instrumentations, chemical irrigation and intracanal medicaments pose a huge limitation to root canal disinfection as they kill bacteria and dental stem cells simultaneously. Therefore, much attention has been focused on finding more efficacious antibacterial methods that has no or negligible cytotoxicity for dental stem cells. Herein, we hypothesized that combining antibacterial medicaments with Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and methylene blue (MB) as a photosensitizer would be effective in reducing death of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs). To examine this, DPSCs were isolated from third molar teeth through enzymatic digestion. Isolated cells were cultured in αMEM and when reached adequate confluency, were used for further analysis. Cytotoxicity effect of different groups of MB, DAP, MB, LED and their combination on DPSCs was analyzed using MTT assay. DPSCs membrane integrity as a marker of live cells was assessed through measuring lipid peroxidation and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release into extracellular space. Results showed that the combination of LED, MB and TAP or aPDT, MB and DAP was more effective in reducing DPSCs death rate compared to TAP and DAP administration alone. Moreover, Malondialdehyde (MDA) and LDH levels were found to be decreased in cells exposed to combination treatment in comparison with single TAP or DAP therapy. Our study shows the promising perspectives of employing combined aPDT, MB and antibiotic medicaments for reduction of dental stem cell death.

Epigenetic therapeutics in dental pulp treatment: Hopes, challenges and concerns for the development of next-generation biomaterials.

This opinion-led review paper highlights the need for novel translational research in vital-pulp-treatment (VPT), but also discusses the challenges in translating evidence to clinics. Traditional dentistry is expensive, invasive and relies on an outmoded mechanical understanding of dental disease, rather than employing a biological perspective that harnesses cell activity and the regenerative-capacity. Recent research has focussed on developing minimally-invasive biologically-based 'fillings' that preserve the dental pulp; research that is shifting the paradigm from expensive high-technology dentistry, with high failure rates, to smart restorations targeted at biological processes. Current VPTs promote repair by recruiting odontoblast-like cells in a material-dependent process. Therefore, exciting opportunities exist for development of next-generation biomaterials targeted at regenerative processes in the dentin-pulp complex. This article analyses recent research using pharmacological-inhibitors to therapeutically-target histone-deacetylase (HDAC) enzymes in dental-pulp-cells (DPCs) that stimulate pro-regenerative effects with limited loss of viability. Consequently, HDAC-inhibitors have the potential to enhance biomaterial-driven tissue responses at low concentration by influencing the cellular processes with minimal side-effects, providing an opportunity to develop a topically-placed, inexpensive bio-inductive pulp-capping material. Despite positive results, clinical translation of these innovations requires enterprise to counteract regulatory obstacles, dental-industry priorities and to develop strong academic/industry partnerships. The aim of this opinion-led review paper is to discuss the potential role of therapeutically-targeting epigenetic modifications as part of a topical VPT strategy in the treatment of the damaged dental pulp, while considering the next steps, material considerations, challenges and future for the clinical development of epigenetic therapeutics or other 'smart' restorations in VPT.

SrCuSi4 O10 /GelMA Composite Hydrogel-Mediated Vital Pulp Therapy: Integrating Antibacterial Property and Enhanced Pulp Regeneration Activity.

Vital pulp therapy (VPT) is considered a conservative treatment for preserving pulp viability in caries-induced dental pulp infections. However, bacterial contamination negatively affects dentine-pulp complex repair. The common capping materials show limited antimicrobial effects against some microorganisms. To improve the VPT efficacy, capping materials with increased antibacterial properties and enhanced odontogenic and angiogenic activities are needed. Herein, a SrCuSi4 O10 /gelatin methacrylate(SC/Gel) composite hydrogel has been proposed for infected dental pulp treatment. SrCuSi4 O10 (SC) is a microscale bioceramic composed of assembled multilayered nanosheets that possesses good near-infrared photothermal conversion ability and multiple bioactivities due to sustained Sr2+ , Cu2+ , and SiO3 2- ion release. It is shown that the SC/Gel composite hydrogel efficiently eliminates Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei and inhibits biofilm formation under photothermal heating, while the ion extract from SC promotes odontogenesis of rat dental pulp stem cellsand angiogenesis of human umbilical vein endothelial cells. The as-designed therapeutic effect of SC/Gel composite hydrogel-mediated VPT has been proven in a rat dental pulp infection model and yielded improved dentine-pulp complex repair compared with the commercially used iRoot® BP Plus. This study suggests that the SC/Gel composite hydrogel is a potential pulp-capping material with improved effects on dentine-pulp complex repair in infected pulp.

The Role of Asiatic Acid in Preventing Dental Pulp Inflammation: An in-vivo Study.

Acute dental pulp inflammation necessitates early treatment to alleviate inflammation and pain. In the inflammatory phase, a substance is required to lower the inflammatory mediators and reactive oxygen species that play a crucial role in that phase. Asiatic acid is a natural triterpene obtained from the Centella asiatica plant with a high antioxidant value. This study examined the effect of Asiatic acid's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antinociceptive properties on dental pulp inflammation. The research is an experimental laboratory, with a post-test only with a control group design. The study utilised 40 male Wistar rats weighing 200-250 grams and aged 8-10 weeks. Rats were divided into five groups (control, eugenol, Asiatic Acid 0.5%; 1%; 2% group). Dental pulp inflammation was created in the maxillary incisor after six hours of administration of lipopolysaccharides (LPS). The dental pulp treatment then continued with the administration of eugenol and three different Asiatic acid concentrations (0.5%, 1% and 2%). In the next 72 hours, the teeth were biopsied, and the dental pulp was analysed using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to measure the level of MDA, SOD, TNF-α, beta-endorphins and CGRP. Histopathological examination and the Rat Grimace Scale were utilised to determine the level of inflammation and pain, respectively. The effect of Asiatic Acid on MDA, TNF-α, and CGRP levels decreased significantly compared to the control group (p=<0.001). On the SOD and beta-endorphin levels, Asiatic acid treatment resulted in a considerable rise (p =<0.001). Due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antinociceptive characteristics, Asiatic acid can reduce inflammation and pain in acute pulp inflammation due to its ability to decrease MDA, TNFα, and CGRP levels while raising SOD and beta-endorphin levels.

Using transfixion irrigation with negative pressure drainage (TINPD) minimally invasive to manage infratemporal fossa (ITF) abscess.

The treatment of abscess in the infratemporal space is still controversial and bedside and operative intraoral drainage is often used to resolve the abscess. However, it can be difficult to control the infection quickly.[1] In this report, the authors present a new technique of using transfixion irrigation with negative pressure drainage for minimally invasive management of infratemporal fossa abscess. A 45-year-old man with type 2 diabetes complained of painful swelling and trismus in the right lower facial region for 10 days. The patient was weak, with mild anxiety, and gradually aggravated. The patient was misdiagnosed and received dental pulp treatment for the right mandibular first molar and was given oral cefradine capsules (500 mg 3 times per day). Computed tomography scan and puncture revealed an abscess in the infratemporal fossa. The authors used transfixion irrigation with negative pressure drainage from different directions to reach the abscess cavity. Saline solution was infused through 1 tube and allowed to flow out through the other tube to flush out the pus and debris from the abscess. On day 9, the drainage tube was removed and the patient was discharged. One week later, the patient was followed up in the outpatient clinic and the impacted mandibular third molar was removed. This technique is less invasive and leads to faster recovery times and fewer complications. The report highlights the importance of proper preoperative evaluation, using a thoracic drainage tube as soon as possible, and continuous flushing. A double-lumen drainage tube with a suitable diameter and combined flushing should be designed for future reference. Moreover, the use of drugs can effectively eliminate emboli formation, allowing for faster and more minimally invasive control and removal of the infection.[2].

Revascularization of an Immature Permanent Tooth with Periapical Periodontitis: A Case Report

To prove pulp revascularization is a valuable dental treatment technique for immature but necrotic teeth and allows continuous root development. This report describes a successful case of revascularization in the treatment of first maxillary premolars with severe apical periodontitis. Installed rubber barrier under local anesthesia. After entering the pulp cavity, the root canal was rinsed with 1% sodium hypochlorite, 17% EDTA and physical saline. A scaffold was created by inducing the formation of a blood clot within the canal. Then we inserted MTA into the root canal and sealed it with glass ionomer material temporarily. Finally, temporary sealing material was removed and resin filling repair was carried out. During the follow-up period of 10 months after the operation, the teeth were asymptomatic, the clinical examination showed good recovery, and the imaging examination showed that the root was well-developed and had normal function. This case adds evidence for the effectiveness and clinical potential of revascularization in the treatment of young permanent teeth with pulp necrosis. MTA is a reliable and effective material in dental pulp treatment in children.

Progress in application of natural scaffold materials in pulp regeneration

Endodontic and periapical diseases are two of the most common oral diseases and usually cause irreversible damage to the pulp due to severe irritation, such as dental caries, accidental trauma, or iatrogenic causes. The typical dental pulp treatment method is root canal therapy, but the loss of dental pulp tissue changes the function of dental pulp, and may cause a series of complications. Pulp regeneration therapy uses the principle of tissue engineering to replace the diseased pulp tissue with new pulp tissue so as to achieve the purpose of restoring the normal physiological function of the pulp. Scaffolds are one of the important elements of tissue engineering, and a variety of scaffolds have been found to potentially be used in pulp regeneration. Naturally derived scaffold materials have good biocompatibility and rapid degradation rate and are widely used in endodontic tissue engineering.

Evaluating the Effect of Tideglusib-Loaded Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles as a Potential Dentine Regenerative Material.

Dental pulp treatment is the least intrusive procedure currently available for preserving the vitality of the pulp. Several studies are underway to improve the bioactivity of pulp capping materials. Tideglusib isa potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and a regenerative drug developed against Alzheimer’s disease and has been shown to be effective in the treatment of dental cavities. However, its bioactive properties encapsulated within the nanoparticles as a component of pulp capping material are largely unknown. In this study, tideglusib-loaded bioactive glass nanoparticles were synthesized (tideglusib-BgNPs) and mixed at various concentrations into the calcium silicate cement to testits physiomechanical and bioactivitiescompared with biodentine (control). The calcium silicate cement with 10wgt% tideglusib-BgNPs showed comparable physiomechanical properties to that of biodentine. Additionally, the assessment of cytotoxicity and bioactivity (cell proliferation, wound healing, and cell migration assays) showed increased bioactivity in terms of better wound healing, increased proliferation, and better migration of human dental pulp stem cells than biodentine. These findings suggest new opportunities to use tideglusib-BgNPs in pulp therapy.

Knowledge, Attitude and Practice regarding dental pulp treatment in teaching sector of South Punjab

Objective: This study had four-fold objective; to evaluate the dentists’ choice about removal of caries, to know the preferred material for direct and indi¬rect pulp capping and to find out the influence of clinical experience, post-graduation and workplace on treatment modalities. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was performed on 460 dentists belonging to dental colleges of South Punjab. Non-probability convenience sampling was done. Information about work experience, post-graduation and workplace, caries removal, direct and indirect pulp capping material was collected. SPSS version 22 was used to analyze data. Frequencies, percentages and association of treatment options with other variables were found out. Results: Out of 429 participants, 50% selected to remove total caries and restore temporarily in first visit then permanent filling in second. Calcium hydroxide was the most preferred material (61%) for direct pulp capping, whereas for indirect, it was a combination of CH, GIC and adhesive, also opted by post-graduates significantly more than graduates (p=0.02). No association of work experience and post-graduation had no association with questions about treatment modalities (p = 0.19 and 0.16 respectively). In private sector, first treatment option and a combination of CH, GIC, adhesive and composite for indirect capping was opted significantly more than public sector (p=03 and p=02 respectively), whereas, for direct capping CH was opted significantly more in public than private (p=0.01). Conclusion: The preferred treatment was the complete caries removal and temporary filling in first visit followed by per¬manent filling in second. Calcium hydroxide was the material of choice for pulp capping, also significantly more in public sector than private. In deep cavities, the combination of CH and GIC was preferred for lining under composite resin. The work experience and post-graduation of dentists had no significant influence on treatment options or material used for pulp capping. Assessment of a novel activity of Acacia nilotica leaf extract for chondrogenesis induction of Mesenchymal stem cells for dental applications

BackgroundThe Dearth of the self-rejuvenation capability of cartilage tissue is one of the frequent problems encountered by the dentist and orthopedic surgeons. Acacia nilotica commonly known as (babul, thorny acacia, Egyptian acacia or thorn mimosa) has wide range of medicinal uses. The current study was carried out to investigate the herbal-based chondrogenesis inducing ability of leaves extract of A. nilotica in Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). PurposeTo investigate the ability of Acacia nilotica leaves extract in chondrogenesis induction from Mesenchymal stem cells Study designThe experimental were designed according to the completely randomized design (CRD). MethodsDifferent concentration of water and ethanol extract of plant leaves were tested for its inhibitory activity on HDP-SC. The HDP-SCs were stimulated to differentiate into chondrocytes in the presence of water extract of A. nilotica leaves. The study was accomplished by assessing the glycosaminoglycan (GAG), aggrecan, collagen 2α1 (Col2α1), and sox9 in the cellular matrix required for cartilage tissue formation. The MSCs revealed surface markers like CD45, CD90, CD105, and CD166 cultured on specialized chondrogenic differentiation medium in presence of leaves extract of A. nilotica. ResultsThe aqueous leaves extract showed a time-dependent increase in the concentration of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) deposition on 7th, 14th, and 21st day of incubation. The chondrogenic specific markers like aggrecan and col2α1were up-regulated from 7th to 21st days of incubation showing the highest protein expression on the 21st day. The sox9 protein was substantially enhanced on the 7th to 21thday of incubation of HDP-SC with leaves extract of A. nilotica compared to standard TGF-β inducer. ConclusionThe results demonstrate that aqueous leaves extract of A. nilotica promotes chondrogenesis of Mesenchymal stem cells. The study suggests that water leaves extract of “Babool"can be used as an alternative strategy for treatment of dental pulp through chondrogenic differentiation. A. nilotica as a source of many active secondary metabolites which may serve as potential candidates for development of novel lead compounds. This research confirmed the usefulness of this plant A. nilotica as a characteristic feature of medical plant and pharmaceutical. Further studies in the future are required to identify the role of the rest of the active compounds.

The effect of hydroxyapatite and growth factors on reparative dentine formation in the therapy of injured pulp

Background/Aim. The studies of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and growth factors as the materials used for direct pulp capping have produced conflicting results for both the issue of the inflammatory response and the issue of calcified bridge formation. Hap/poly (lactide-co-glycolide) (HAp/PLGA) is a bioresorbable polymer with demonstrated good characteristics as the carrier for the bone morphogenetic protein necessary in bone tissue regeneration. The role of growth factors in dental tissue reparation (in both reactionary and reparative dentinogenesis) represents the new foundation and provides a different approach to dental pulp treatment. Growth factors ? transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-?-1) ? directly induce morphological and functional differentiation of neo-odontoblasts. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of calcium HAp/PLGA and growth factors (TGF ?-1) in the formation of a calcified tissue ? dentine bridge ? on the teeth of our experimental model. Methods. In this experimental study, rodent (rabbit) teeth were used as the animal model. After the trepanation of pulp space with sterile steel drills, the pulp was capped with calcium HAp/PLGA (experimental group I; n = 60); calcium HAp/PLGA combined with TGF ?-1 growth factor (experimental group II; n = 60), and there was a control group of intact teeth (n = 20). The experiment was performed in general anesthesia. The animals were kept alive for 1, 3, and 6 months. The extracted teeth were adequately prepared for scanning electron microscopy. Results. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the number of teeth with calcified tissue in the form of dental bridges in the HAp/PLGA+TGF ?-1 group, 6 months after the treatment, was statistically significantly greater (66.67%) than after 3 months (26.67%), at the statistical significance level of p &lt; 0.05. Conclusion. Direct pulp capping covers the artificially exposed dental pulp and makes possible the formation of a dentine bridge (a tubular structure composed of reparative dentine) in the period of 3 months.

Root Canal Disinfection Using Highly Effective Aggregation-Induced Emission Photosensitizer.

Root canal (RC) therapy is the primary treatment of dental-pulp and periapical diseases. The mechanical method and chemical irrigation have limitations in RC therapy. Much attention has focused on exploring more controllable and efficacious antimicrobial methods. Although the introduction of photodynamic therapy (PDT) has provided the ideas for RC debridement, the problems of low photosensitive efficiency and nonsignificant germicidal potency of traditional photosensitizers (e.g., methylene blue) have not been solved. Since the concept of "aggregation-induced emission" (AIE) was proposed, optimization of photosensitizers has been boosted considerably. Herein, an AIE photosensitizer, DPA-SCP, with a strong ability to generate singlet oxygen, is proposed for use as an antibacterial application in infected RCs. The antimicrobial activity of DPA-SCP against Enterococcus faecalis suspensions was tested. To explore the antibacterial ability of this photosensitizer against bacterial-biofilm colonization on the inner walls of RCs, we established a model of bacterial biofilm infection. PDT mediated by DPA-SCP had a significant germicidal effect on E. faecalis suspensions and 21-day biofilms in human RCs. PDT mediated by DPA-SCP could achieve efficiency equivalent to that observed using 1% NaOCl, and lead to no significant change in the dentin surface, chemical corrosion, or cytotoxicity.

DESCRIPTION OF PULP TREATMENT AND POST PULP TREATMENT MATERIALS IN BPJS AND UNINSURED PATIENTS IN THE DENTAL CLINIC, IDAMAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL, BANJARBARU

ABSTRACT: Background: Badan Penyelenggaran Jaminan Sosial (BPJS) is a form of the implementation of the National Health Insurance which is tasked to ensure the maintenance of health for all Indonesians. But many people are not satisfied with BPJS. Kurniawan research in 2015, treatment measures (aspects of assurance) were significantly different between uninsured patients and BPJS patients. Idaman Hospital, Banjarbaru is a type C hospital owned by the city government, as an advanced level health facility in implementing BPJS. Pulp treatment is a kind of treatments in dental and mouth which covered by BPJS. Purpose: To know the description of pulp treatment and post pulp treatment materials in BPJS and uninsured patients in Idaman District Hospital, Banjarbaru. Methods: A descriptive observational study with retrospective secondary data collect from patient registers in January-December 2018. Results: Outpatients that insured by BPJS were 78.84% and uninsured were 21.10%. The use of dental pulp treatment materials was arsenic with 13.6% in BPJS patients and 6.6% in uninsured patients, formocresol with 21.5% in BPJS patients and 5.6% in uninsured patients, cresophene 20.42% in BPJS patients and 3.76% in uninsured patients, eugenol 2,81% in BPJS patients and 2.35% in uninsured patients. The most common used post-pulp treatment materials were 16.6% GIC for BPJS patients and 6.09% in uninsured patients, while composites were only 0.23% for both. Conclusion: Dental pulp treatment materials in BPJS and uninsured patients are arsenic, formocresol, cresophene and eugenol, while post pulp treatment materials are GIC and composite.Keywords: BPJS, Pulp Treatment, Uninsured Patients

Exosomes Derived from Stem Cells from the Apical Papilla Promote Dentine-Pulp Complex Regeneration by Inducing Specific Dentinogenesis.

Regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) are a new option for the treatment of dental pulp or periapical diseases in permanent teeth with open apices. Histologically, the new tissues formed in the root canal after REPs are mainly cementum- or bone-like mineralised tissues, but not the real dentine-pulp complex. Therefore, how to promote dentine-pulp complex regeneration and improve the clinical effects of REPs has become a prominent research topic. Stem cells from apical papilla (SCAP) are derived from the dental papilla that can differentiate into primary odontoblasts and dental pulp cells that produce root dentine and dental pulp. Exosomes are the key regulator for the paracrine activity of stem cells and can influence the function of recipient cells. In this study, SCAP-derived exosomes (SCAP-Exo) were introduced into the root fragment containing bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) and transplanted subcutaneously into immunodeficient mice. We observed that dental pulp-like tissues were present and the newly formed dentine was deposited onto the existing dentine in the root canal. Afterwards, the effects of SCAP-Exo on the dentinogenesis of BMMSCs were elucidated in vitro. We found that the gene and protein expression of dentine sialophosphoprotein and mineralised nodule formation in BMMSCs treated with SCAP-Exo were significantly increased. In summary, SCAP-Exo were endocytosed by BMMSCs and obviously improved their specific dentinogenesis. The use of exosomes derived from dental stem cells could comprise a potential therapeutic approach for dentine-pulp complex regeneration in REPs.

Pulp treatment for immature permanent teeth

For dental pulp treatment of immature permanent teeth, direct pulp capping or partial/cervical pulpotomy (apexogenesis) procedures can be used if the dental pulp is vital. MTA (Mineral Trioxide Aggregate) is regarded as the first choice dressing material for these procedures because its higher success rate. It can be also used successfully for devitalized dental pulp which has been treated by calcium hydroxide. This apexification procedure with MTA has a few advantage such as short treatment period and increase of resistance against root fracture. Recently, regenerative endodontic treatment was introduced for devitalized immature pulp. It can maintain pulp vitality and lead to continuing root development although the dental pulp was devitalized.

Comparison of the radiopacity of selected materials used for vital pulp therapy: An in vitro assessment.

An assessment of the therapeutic effects of vital pulp treatment is based on both clinical and radiological evaluation. The aim of the research was a long-term (after 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks) radiological assessment of X-ray absorption by 8 selected materials used for the vital treatment of dental pulp. The materials, prepared in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendations, were placed in molds measuring 10 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness. The molds with the samples were placed on an occlusal film with an aluminum step wedge, and then X-rayed using an intraoral X-ray unit. After processing, an X-ray image with varying degrees of opacity was obtained. The radiological density of the samples, the step wedge and the background was measured 6 times using a densitometer. The tests were repeated at the following intervals: after 7 days, and after 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks. The molds with the material samples were stored in an incubator at 37°C and 95% humidity. The obtained results were statistically analyzed. The mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) materials exhibited the highest degree of contrast, whereas the lowest radiopacity was shown for the non-setting calcium hydroxide preparations (p < 0.0001). Calcium hydroxide cements presented medium radiopacity values. The radiopacity of all the evaluated materials showed a statistically insignificant increasing tendency with regard to the duration of the experiment. All the tested preparations showed acceptable radiopacity, enabling radiological detection in the course of vital pulp therapy.

Micro‐XRD and nanoindentation investigation of bioceramics for dental pulp therapy

AbstractTherapeutic bioceramics for dental pulp treatment are an area of active research. This study investigated the phases in two commonly used bioceramics and depth of dentin remineralization after application of these bioceramics. Cavities in non‐carious third molars were filled with ProRoot White mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) (Dentsply Tulsa Dental), EndoSequence Root Repair Material (Brasseler USA) and with calcium hydroxide (Dycal, Dentsply Caulk) serving as a control. Specimens were immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 3 months, and Micro‐X‐ray diffraction (Micro‐XRD) analyses were performed on the bioceramics two minutes after placement and at seven subsequent intervals. After three months in SBF, specimens were subjected to nanoindentation testing. Micro‐XRD revealed the presence of dicalcium silicate, tricalcium silicate, tricalcium aluminate and calcium sulphate in both bioceramics. Opacifying agents bismuth oxide and zirconia were also detected in ProRoot White MTA and EndoSequence Root Repair Material, respectively. There was no evidence for the silicate gel matrix that forms during setting of these bioceramics. Nanoindentation testing revealed that at &lt;17 µm from the interface, the nanohardness of dentin in specimens filled with Dycal was lower than for EndoSequence and ProRoot White MTA, whereas at 21–97 µm from the interface, there was no significant difference in nanohardness of dentin filled with any material.

Effects of Different Corticosteroid Drugs on the Treatment of Dental Pulp

A theranostic dental pulp capping agent with improved MRI and CT contrast and biological properties.

In this study, we combined diagnostic and therapeutic agents in order to developed a theranostic pulp capping agent with enhanced MRI and CT contrast and improved dentin regeneration ability. In our study we cover all the steps from material preparation, mechanical and in vitro characterization, to in vivo study in a goat dental model. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a theranostic pulp capping material have been developed and tested in an in vivo animal model. Our promising results in term of imaging contrast enhancement and of induction of new dentin formation, open a new scenario in the development of innovative dental materials.
