Performance evaluation of fiber impairment mitigation for high capacity communication systems using optical compensation method

Due to their ability to boost transmission rate and reach by compensating for Kerr nonlinearity-induced distortions, optical compensation techniques are interesting for broadband wavelength division multiplexing. This is due to the fact that these techniques have been shown to increase transmission rate. Yet, in the majority of instances, they call for more devices to be integrated into the network. This can be challenging for systems that are already in place, and it can be even more challenging for transmissions that are not repeated. The linear and nonlinear compensation system for the Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) transmission system has been created and researched in this work. Along the optical link, a new method known as optical phase conjugation (OPC) is used as part of the process of improving the performance of communication systems. This method is used to improve the performance of 896 Gb/s sixteen channels dual polarization signalling of 50 GHz channel spacing over 800 km with three scenarios that use mid and multiple OPC. The results of the simulation indicate that multiple OPC with backward Raman amplifier method on the received signal is effective for nonlinearity compensation when compared with the mid OPC module in terms of enhanced Q-factor improvement, BER performance, EVM, and maximum transmission link length.

Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between two independent all-fiber multiplexed photon sources

Interference between independent photon sources is the key technique to realize complex quantum systems for more sophisticated applications such as multi-photon entanglement generation and quantum teleportation. Here, we report Hong-Ou-Mandel interference (HOMI) between two independent 1.55 m all-fiber photon pair sources over two 100 GHz dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) channels, whose visibility reaches 53.2%8.4% (82.9%5.3%) without (with) back ground counts subtracted. In addition, we theoretically describe in detail the single photon spectral purity of the photon source generated in dispersion shifted fiber (DSF), simulate the influences of the pulse width and filter bandwidth on the purity, and obtain the optimized condition. The optimized pump pulse width is 8 ps and filter bandwidth is about 40 GHz or less. A home-made 1550.1 nm mode-locked fiber laser source, whose pulse width and repetition rate are 25 ps and 27.9 MHz respectively, acts as a pump of photon source. A tunable attenuator is used to adjust the pump power of the photon source, and the broad band background fluorescence photons are filtered out by cascade 100 GHz DWDM filters. The clean pump beam is divided into two equal parts by the 50 : 50 optical coupler to pump two 300 m DSFs (cooled by liquid nitrogen) to generate independent photon sources. Then the strong pump beam and noise photon from Raman scattering in orthogonal polarization are removed by 2 groups of 200 GHz DWDM filters and fiber polarization rotator and polarizer. Then two 100 GHz DWDMs are used for separating photons at correlated channel pairs. The relative delay between the two independent photons is adjusted by tunable fiber delay line. Photons from the same channels are combined in a second beam splitter for interference, and the other two photons are used as trigger signals. The two triggered photons are detected by two free running InGaAs avalanched single photon detectors (APD1, APD4, ID Quanta, ID220, 20% detection efficiency, 3 s dead time, dark count rate 4k cps), and the outputs of detectors APD1 and APD4 are used to trigger two single-photon detectors running in the gated mode (APD2, APD3, Qasky, Hefei, China, 100 MHz, free gating single photon detectors, 20% detection efficiency, dark count probability 410-5 per gate) for twophoton coincidence measurement. Detection output signals from APD2 and APD3 are sent to our coincidence count device (Pico quanta, TimeHarp 260, 1.6 ns coincidence window) for four-photon coincidence measurement. Before measuring the HOMI, we obtain a maximum-coincidence-to-accidental-coincidence ratio (CAR) of 131 by cooling the fiber in liquid nitrogen when the pump power is 23 W. There are a few remarks we want to point out.Firstly, the photon sources are not operated at the optimized pump pulse width for pure single photon generation, but narrow band 100 GHz filters are used in the experiments to increase the purity of the sources. Secondly, single photon detectors used in our experiment have lower detection efficiency and much higher dark counts than nano-wire single photon detectors, if we have high-performance nano-wire single photon detector, experimental results will be greatly improved due to the four-fold coincidences and dark coincidences scaling quadruplicate with the detection efficiency and dark count probability of a single detector. Thirdly, we use relatively high pump power for each DSF (0.12 mW) to reduce measurement time for photon coincidence, which will lead to a very poor raw visibility certainly. Finally, though only a 100 GHz channel pair is used in our experiment, we can use other channels for multiplexing such interference processes to improve the channel capacity in future quantum communication tasks theoretically. Our study shows greatly promising integrated optical elements for future scalable quantum information processing.

Performance Analysis of Four Wave Mixing: A Non-Linear Effect in Optical fibers

Linear effects in Optical fibers are caused due to the refractive index of the optical medium's dependence on the intensity of light. One of the prominent non-linear effects in Optical fibers is the Four-wave mixing (FWM) phenomenon. FWM effect is resonant when the phase matching condition is satisfied. It only occurs for particular combinations of fiber dispersion and signal frequencies. The FWM is a very unpleasant transmission phenomenon occurring in a transparent optical network based on Dense Wave Division Multiplexing, but it could be used advantageously for implementing optical devices such as wavelength converters, parametric amplifiers, optical de-multiplexers, chromatic dispersion compensators, as well as signal to noise regenerators. This paper discusses the effect of channel spacing, laser power, and dispersion, length of the optical fiber and the variation of input power to compensate the effect of FWM when implemented in a short haul environment. Business Continuity and Security in Datacenter Interconnection

Large enterprises are increasingly running applications that demand the storage and real time transfer of massive amounts of data. Such applications require high bandwidth and low latency in order to meet current operational business needs and disaster recovery time objectives. Critical enterprise data is synchronously mirrored between two geographically diverse datacenters, typically at least 60 to 100 kilometers apart, to ensure that no data will be lost if disaster should strike. This paper will explore complementary technologies to Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) in order to address current datacenter challenges specific to business continuity and security in light of the potential for equipment failure, fiber cuts, floods, fire, or massive power grid blackouts, as well as denial of service and terrorist attacks. These include intrusion detection on the optical fiber path, line speed encryption, and multiple mechanisms to address the potential for major outages. Wavelength reuse for uplink on dense wave-division multiplexing single-fiber ring for radio over fiber broadband systems with downlink signal generation in optical domain

We have presented a single-fiber dense wave-division multiplexing (DWDM) ring scheme with wavelength reuse for uplink and optical signal generation for downlink. Instead of using a new laser for uplink, the wavelength already used for wavelength beating to generate the downlink signal in optical domain is reused for uplink. Algorithms for power optimization using Erbium-doped fiber amplifier, wavelength routing, and wavelength assignment are developed and simulated. The DWDM-radio over fiber scheme reusing the wavelength can support the data rate in the range of 1 Gbps. Fifteen remote antenna units (RAUs) are simulated in this scheme; however, these can be increased by adding more wavelengths. The proposed scheme simplifies the architecture or RAUs, decreases the overall cost while enhancing the bandwidth and operational flexibility of radio over fiber systems.

Non-intrusive polarization dependent loss monitoring in fiber-optic transmission systems

A method for non-intrusively monitoring the polarization dependent loss (PDL) of an installed fiber-optic transmission system is proposed using live dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM)-based traffic as the probing signal. The method extracts the statistical parameters of system PDL from the measured partial PDL data. Field measurements of PDL were performed on long-haul DWDM systems deployed in Sprint’s network and the results validated our theoretical model.

Metro Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM)

Metro Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) has been touted by its proponents as the future of optical telecommunications in the metro market. But is it? Its proponents have presented it as a natural extension of long haul DWDM into the metro network. But can Metro DWDM be cost justified and, if so, under what conditions? Whether and to what extent the economics of metro DWDM will change over time are other major questions certain to affect materially the acceptance of metro DWDM and thus the market opportunity for manufacturers of metro DWDM equipment. Finally, questions concerning regional variations in the market opportunity for Metro DWDM equipment must be answered.

Reconstructing transmission networks using ATM and DWDM

TDM transmission and ATM switching have been established as two wide area core network technologies, operating separately but in conjunction with each other at different layers of the protocol stack. History shows that transmission networks have been reconstructed on a regular basis, and the reconstruction, based on fiber, SONET, and DWDM (dense wave division multiplexing), allows TDM transmission capabilities to be integrated with ATM switches, resulting in increased transmission efficiencies, effective bandwidth management, and greatly reduced capital, operational, and maintenance costs.

IP routers: new tool for gigabit networking

IP routing continues to receive much attention from the research and vendor communities. Its primary function-forwarding packets between networks-must keep pace with the demands of the exponentially growing end user population. It must accommodate attachment of gigabit data link technologies such as ATM, packet Sonet, Gigabit Ethernet, and dense wave division multiplexing, and fill those links at full capacity. As network providers introduce new services supporting multicast, QoS, voice, and security, IP routing-and more specifically the IP forwarding function-will be called upon to analyze additional packet information at gigabit rates to determine how each packet should be handled. Performing these new functions while maintaining parity with the advances in available bandwidth will present an interesting challenge for the forwarding capabilities of IP routers. Indeed, for the Internet to scale, we must scale all dimensions of the IP routing process.
