An Updated Isotopic Database of Fertilizers Used in Intensive Organic Farming: A Case Study on Protein Hydrolyzed Derivatives and Chelated Nutrients

The global demand for organic food products has rapidly increased over the last years, becoming an emerging niche market targeting the high-income segment. The higher retailing price for organic food products may increase the risk of fraudulent practices at the different stages of the food supply chain, and consequently, substantial control is needed. Currently, the authentication of organic food products, such as those of plant origin, remains a key challenge in analytical chemistry. While stable isotopes have emerged as a powerful tool for this purpose, most studies have focused on crops, missing the agricultural inputs used for fertilization that influence the isotopic values of the crops. In this study, we aimed to isotopically characterize commonly used fertilizers, soil conditioners, and micronutrient fertilizers in intensive organic agriculture in the largest organic production region in the world (Almería, Spain). Our goal was to clarify the limitations that nitrogen isotopic fingerprinting presents for the fertilizer input industry and to characterize the organic inputs. The conventional fertilizers analyzed in this study showed low δ15N values compared to their organic counterparts, except for some plant-based fertilizers, protein hydrolyzed fertilizers, and chelated nutrients. Both protein hydrolyzed fertilizers and micronutrient fertilizers presented a wide range of variability in their δ15N values, including some very low or even negative values, more similar to those of conventional fertilizers. The results of this study highlight the challenges of authenticating organic foods in agriculture when using nitrogen isotope analysis.

The article presents current information on trends in the consumption of organic food products in the world, information from foreign studies on their impact on public health. The market for these food products has grown significantly since the late 20th century and today represents a multi-billion dollar industry with distinct production, processing, distribution and retail systems. The relevance of studying the prevalence of consumption of organic food products among the population of various countries is increasing due to the increase in the modern world of demand and motivation among social groups of the population, especially among adherents of a healthy lifestyle. The purpose of the study is to review and analyze modern scientific foreign literature on the development of the organic food market from the standpoint of health conservation and medical and social perspectives. As a result of the review, it was revealed that the understanding currently clearly manifested in various social circles of the need to improve the level of quality of health of the individual and the population as a whole, the demand for the production of safe, micronutrient-rich, healthy food products, especially products of plant origin, actualize the expansion of production organic food products. In many countries around the world, there is an increase in consumer demand for organic food products; their regular consumers are people, mainly women, who care about their health, are physically active, have a higher level of education and income, and live mainly in high-income countries. The certain high cost of organic food products, depending on labor-intensive production methods and certification costs, often leads to unequal access to organic food products. The positive impact of organic foods on health status and the risk of developing chronic diseases is associated with a higher content of biologically active compounds and a lower content of substances harmful to health. Overall, large intervention and population-based studies are needed on the health effects of organic foods, comparing the quality, safety, bioactive compounds, nutritional and phytochemical value of foods in conventional and organic production systems using new research methods.

Many have come to value transparency and traceability associated with organic food production, as it offers a sense of control and security in uncertain times. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the vulnerabilities of industrial agriculture and the associated environmental concerns. Consumers have become more conscious of the environmental impact of their food choices and have turned to organic products, which often have lower carbon footprints, support sustainable farming practices, and promote biodiversity. This abstract highlights the opinion people about organic food products in human life during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has led to an increased focus on health, food safety, and sustainability, organic foods have emerged as a preferred choice for many consumers, reflecting a broader shift towards more conscious and conscientious eating habits.

Environmental impact of Danish organic tomatoes grown in greenhouses: Quantifying the reduction potential from changes in energy supply towards 2030

The demand for organic food products, including tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum, L. 1753), is growing. Heated greenhouse production is well described through life cycle assessment (LCA), but inventories reflecting organic production conditions are inadequate or missing. At the same time, energy systems in Europe are changing, which is expected to have a considerable impact on the emissions from the energy intensive greenhouse production. Thus, this study is assessing the current environmental impacts using LCA of an organic tomato production in a heated greenhouse, and estimate the expected changes to impacts due to changes in energy supply. The assessment is based on activity data from a commercial greenhouse production. Current organic tomato production where plants are transplanted into the greenhouse in the late winter has impacts of 1.06 kg CO2 eq., 7.22 × 10−4 N eq., 3.49 × 10−5 kg Sb eq., and result in 3.12 kg C deficit from land use while consuming 24.58 MJ of energy per kg organic tomato. The impacts from earlier started tomato cultures are higher, as increased yield does not remedy increased energy use. The result from current production shows that direct energy consumption is responsible for the main impact on climate change (78%), cumulative energy demand (75%), marine eutrophication (56%) and land use (62%). However, expected future changes in the energy system towards 2030 are likely to reduce life cycle environmental impacts considerably (reduction potential for climate change impact: 69%, cumulative energy demand: 48%, eutrophication potential: 47%, mineral, fossil and renewable resource depletion: 4%, land use: 48%) as intensity of the energy supply changes. Mitigation options such as increased energy efficiency, alternative heat sources and agronomic management decisions are further discussed.

АНАЛИЗ СОСТОЯНИЯ И ПЕРСПЕКТИВ РАЗВИТИЯ ОРГАНИЧЕСКОГО ПРОИЗВОДСТВА В РОССИЙСКИХ РЕГИОНАХ

The article analyzes the state and prospects of development of domestic organic production. The issue of territorial distribution of organic producers by districts and subjects of regions of Russia on the basis of a resource approach is highlighted. The rating of subjects is presented and a rating assessment is carried out with the identification of the leaders of the organic products market in the Russian Federation with the determination of their organizational and legal status. The analysis of consumer demand for organic food products is presented, taking into account consumer behavior in order to develop prospects for the sale of organic products.

Transforming Rhodotorula sp. Biomass to Active Biologic Compounds for Poultry Nutrition

In broiler chick-rearing, the color is usually acquired by synthetic carotenoids in addition to broiler diets (25–80 mg/kg feed), often represented by β-apo-8′-carotenal. In the past fifteen years, the demand for organic food products originating from free-range reared chicks started to grow, with a more directed awareness of the quality of meat and egg. Various investigations have been reporting microorganisms, such as the oleaginous red yeasts genus Rhodotorula sp., as fast-growing unicellular eukaryotes able to synthesize natural pigments. Rhodotorula sp. represents a perfect choice as a natural resource due to the capacity to adapt easily to the environment valuing low-cost sources of nutrients for their metabolism and growth. The biodiversity and the ecology effects establish novel boundaries regarding Rhodotorula sp. productivity enhancement and control of biological risks. It is, therefore, necessary to review the current knowledge on the carotenoid synthesis of Rhodotorula sp. In this paper, we aimed to address the pathways of obtaining valuable yeast carotenoids in different conditions, discussing yeast biosynthesis, bioengineering fermentative evaluation, carotenoid extraction, and the techno-economic implication of valuable pigment additives on poultry nutrition. Finally, the pro-existent gaps in research are highlighted, which may clear the air on future studies for bio-carotenoid engineering.

Using Nitrogen Stable Isotopes to Authenticate Organically and Conventionally Grown Vegetables: A New Tracking Framework

The demand for organic food products has increased in recent years due to them being perceived healthier, safer, and eco-friendlier by consumers, boosting the development of this industry. The higher retailing price of organic products increases the risk of fraudulent practices, making it necessary to establish control mechanisms to authenticate these products. However, the authentication of organic foodstuffs is a great analytical challenge that still requires further research. In the case of organic agriculture, regulations mainly determine the nutrient inputs that can be used by farmers, and generally prohibit the use of pesticides and/or synthetic fertilisers, aiming at maintaining soil fertility using green manures, composts, animal manures, etc. These inputs affect the final food product, and numerous analytical attempts, based on the measurement of multiple markers or complex chemical/physical profiles, have been tested over recent years. However, the high variability of these measurements due to weather condition factors reduces their efficiency and limits their use. In this sense, stable isotopes have emerged as an analytical technique with great potential for the authentication of organic agricultural products, due to their lower dependence on weather conditions and capability to reflect the origin of plant nitrogen, in the case of stable nitrogen isotopes. In this work, the feasibility was assessed using stable isotopes of bulk nitrogen for the organic authentication of four important horticultural crops (zucchini, cucumber, tomato, and pepper) produced in Almeria, southern Spain, which is the largest producing region with the highest export levels in Europe. To this end, 360 samples of vegetables were collected and their δ15N values were determined by combustion coupled to stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA/IRMS). The results allowed an authentication framework to be established based on three ranges delimited by δ15N = 2‰ and δ15N = 5‰, which made it possible to detect with a high degree of confidence vegetables produced under proper organic practices (δ15N > 5‰), conventional practices (δ15N < 2‰), and samples that should be tracked over time to be considered organically produced (middle range). The results of this study demonstrated the potential of using δ15N as a single measure to authenticate organic vegetables, providing official bodies with a tool to make decisions about the organic accreditation of regularly inspected farmers.

Blockchain Framework for Certification of Organic Agriculture Production

Organic production, as a sustainable food production system, is designed to implement all agroecological principles that enable the preservation of human and animal health, environmental protection, and positive impact on society and the ecosystem while achieving significant economic benefits. Demand for organic food products is constantly growing, and the land area under organic production is continuously increasing. The problem in this sector is that producers of organic products face many administrative and systemic obstacles that prevent the faster development of this sector. On the other hand, consumers do not have complete confidence in the current mechanisms of control of organic production, so in the sale on the food markets and in the rest of the market, fake and unverified organic products can be found. Based on sensor data from the production field, this paper presents the SAFE platform as a solution for the described problem. The data necessary for producers to carry out the certification process are harmonized with the current legislation for organic food production. The SAFE platform uses blockchain technology to secure data consistency and history since it makes it impossible to change data history. The results of a survey about the SAFE platform are presented. The proposed solution stimulates the development and improvement of agricultural production by organic production methods, accompanied by increasing capacity in organic production.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION FOR E-GROCERY

Growing demand for organic food products requires to rethink the current supply chain approaches for e-grocery. The shifting trend for e-commerce is requiring products to be delivered in small quantities, to multiple delivery points, which causes negative effect from sustainability perspective. The distribution of goods in urban areas, together with private traffics flow, are among the main sources of energy consumption, air pollution and noise. Thus, the goal of the research is to conduct a literature review on development of sustainable transportation for e-grocery. The literature analysis indicated that the majority of vehicle routing approaches are design for general transportation problems, not specifically related to e-grocery. Also, the changing economic trends related to growing urbanization levels and traffic congestions are not taken into consideration. Thus, the authors of the publication indicate the need to develop dynamic routing algorithms for autonomous vehicles to cope with the traffic congestions and maintain higher sustainability levels from social, economic, and environmental perspectives.

ОРГАНІЧНЕ СІЛЬСЬКЕ ГОСПОДАРСТВО В УКРАЇНІ ЯК СТРАТЕГІЧНИЙ НАПРЯМ РОЗВИТКУ АПК

The article describes the meaning of organic agriculture and its importance in modern social and economic conditions. The study deals with the main legal requirements for organic producers in Ukraine. The main economic advantages of organic agriculture for Ukrainian enterprises have been outlined including: higher prices on organic products which create a possibility to earn higher profits, lower negative impact on the environment makes this practice more sustainable over a long period of time, and high demand for organic food products in the world. The economic disadvantages of organic agriculture include lower yield compared to traditional agriculture, additional legal requirements to comply with, and lower consumption of organic products in Ukraine. The state of organic agriculture in Ukraine is analyzed, in particular the area of ​​land allocated to it and the number of organic operators. The article also describes the situation with organic agriculture in the world, identifies the world's leading countries regarding the area of land used for organic agriculture, and outlines Ukraine's position in it. European Union is identified as the main importer of organic food products from Ukraine, the key imported organic products and their positions in comparison to other countries have been analyzed. The rapid development of organic agriculture in the world and particularly in the European Union and the increase in the area of land used for it may pose a threat to Ukrainian agriculture enterprises and the positions they have on European and world`s organic markets. While acknowledging the risks the study highlights the importance of further development of organic agriculture in Ukraine.

Are They Careful Enough? Testing Consumers' Perception of Alternative Processing Technologies on the Quality of Organic Food.

Given the increasing public interest in how ingredients are processed and the growing demand for organic food products, it is critical to understand consumers’ expectations about the process-related quality of organic products. Consumers perceive organic food to be nutritious, healthy and either natural or less processed, as they are afraid of the loss of nutritional, organoleptic and sensory properties of the food products. However, alternative food processing technologies might generate healthy and safe food options with nutritional quality properties. Simplified communication schemes might help to overcome this barrier for the consumer. The main objective of this study is to propose a working definition of “careful processing” for organic products and test its consistency through an experiment, while being used to rate different processing methods by consumers. Results show that the proposed definition allows the consumer to consistently rate alternative processing technologies. Consumers tend to score alternative processing technologies such as pulsed electric fields and microwaves as less careful, supporting the idea that organic consumers want as little man-made interference in their food products as possible. Results show that a simple but effective definition of careful processing may help consumers to distinguish more organic food products from conventional ones, no matter which communication scheme is used.

Constructing Value Co-Creation Behavior on Loyalty to Community of Organic Food Products in Indonesia

The awareness of consuming healthy food has been increased. It leads to the increasing demand for organic food products. On the other side, there are obstacles to developing the organic product business due to the low level of objective knowledge of the Indonesian people towards organic products, as well as doubts over the authenticity of organic products on the market. This study aims to develop the value co-creation behaviors and perceived values of a growing community to share knowledge of organic food products with the public. Participation and interaction among the community have been enriched the method of research using simple random sampling that involved 385 respondents in 4 organic product communities. The results showed that the main behaviors that must be overcome to improve the loyalty of organic-food-products community members are participation and citizenship behavior. Having these results, the recommended policy direction is to increase the perceived benefits of community participation. Further studies are needed to refine and build more comprehensive models that integrate theoretical constructs related to other perspectives and contexts. The demand for organic food products is multiplying gradually across Punjab. The green revolution has definitely solved the world‟s hunger problem by boosting the agricultural production but it did not take long for people of Punjab to realize the adverse effects they have to face due to the extensive utilization of such chemicals which are strictly banned in many nations for their adverse effects. The life-annihilating chemicals that are being sprinkled into crops are classified into class one by the World Health Organization, which are the most toxic and banned in most of the countries (The Guardian on July 1, 2019). The only way to address this catastrophe is to change the food consumption habits. Shifting to organic food could not only reduce the risk of cancer but can also improve the overall health conditions. In August 2015 with the realization of Mrs. Raman Mann, a farmer and an activist has realized that the marketing is the major issue in organic food space and the production is not a pinnacle to work on. She then decided to establish a sustainable market, “a market which only sounded hypothetical in organic food space back in 2015” she recollected. She envisioned a market which is consumer oriented, environment friendly and farmer led. In organic food business the marketer is most of the times highly vulnerable to many external factors. The major drawback is the premium price a customer has to pay. As no chemicals are used in the organic food production the yield is comparatively lesser than that of chemical fed production practices which makes the farmer/marketer/seller to charge a premium price for their produce.

Organic Food Consumption Preferences and Perceptions of Food Engineering Students

Bu çalışmanın amacı, organik gıda ürünlerinin tüketiciler tarafından tercih edilme sebeplerinin ve satın alma potansiyellerinin belirlenmesidir. Bu çalışma, Türkiye’de bulunan 12 farklı üniversitede 2019-2020 dönemi Gıda Mühendisliği Bölümü son sınıf öğrencileri ile yapılmıştır. Organik gıda tüketim tercihi ve algılarının belirlenmesi amacıyla oluşturulan 20 anket sorusuna, katılımcıların üç seçenekli önem ölçeği uyarınca cevaplamaları istenmiştir. Bu çalışmayla, katılımcıların büyük çoğunluğunun organik gıdaları; daha sağlıklı, besleyici ve güvenilir buldukları tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca katılımcılar tarafından, organik gıdaların hem insan sağlığı hem de ekolojik denge üzerinde olumlu etkileri olduğu vurgulanmıştır. Ancak mevcut çalışma sonucunda, organik gıdalar ile ilgili basın-yayın kuruluşlarının halkı yeterince bilgilendirmediği saptanmıştır. Ayrıca organik gıdaların fiyatlarının uygun olması durumunda daha fazla tercih edileceği de tespit edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak, katılımcıların organik gıdaları tüketmek istedikleri, ancak ürünlerin fiyatlarının pahalı olması ve üretiminden tüketimine kadar güvenilirliklerinin yetersiz olması nedeniyle tercih edilmedikleri belirlenmiştir. Bu nedenle öncelikli olarak tüketiciler üzerinde ürün güvenilirliği artırılarak, ürün fiyatları iyileştirilerek ve yeterli düzeyde bilgilendirme yapılarak organik gıdalara olan talep artırılmalıdır.

Comparing treatments to reduce hypothetical bias in choice experiments regarding organic food

AbstractHypothetical bias is one of the strongest criticisms brought to stated preference methods. We evaluate and compare the use of Cheap Talk and Honesty Priming as methods to mitigate such bias. Our study analyses the demand for organic food products in the UK, and the results reveal a core of consumers with positive willingness to pay (WTP) for organic. However, when correcting for hypothetical bias, consumers appear to be willing to pay even more for other attributes. Most importantly, the results show that implementing mechanisms to correct for hypothetical bias are efficient to reduce WTP, with Cheap Talk having a higher overall significance than Honesty Priming.

What motivates Indian consumers’ to buy organic food in an emerging market?

PurposeIndian consumers are showing an increased demand for organic food products; however, little is known about their intention to buy organic foods. The purpose of this paper is to understand how fear towards conventional food products motivates an individual to buy organic food products and whether trust and perceived price as contextual factors are able to enhance the buying intention.Design/methodology/approachA total of 275 valid responses were collected using a self-administrated structured questionnaire, representative of Indian consumers. An ordinary least square regression analysis was used to analyse the effect of trust and perceived price in influencing the relationship between consumers’ fear and intention to buy organic food products.FindingsThe moderating role of trust and perceived price in enhancing the direct relation between fear and intention was established. In addition, cluster analysis results revealed that married women with children are showing a greater interest in buying organic food products.Practical implicationsThe findings of the study are of high importance to all stakeholders in organic food products, as selecting marketing practices which target consumers’ concern is an indispensable part of finding a niche for organic food products.Originality/valueThe findings suggest that even though consumers are fearful towards conventional food products, they displayed negative intention to buy organic food products when their trust towards the third party is low, thus confirming the importance of trust as a buffering agent.

Healthy food is nutritious, but organic food is healthy because it is pure: The negotiation of healthy food choices by Danish consumers of organic food

There is increasing demand for organic food products throughout the Western world. Health concerns have frequently been found to be the main motivation of consumers purchasing organic products, but the literature on consumer preferences and behavior is less clear about what ‘health’ means to consumers of these products, and because of this it remains unclear what exactly drives consumers to choose organic products. This article investigates health from the perspective of consumers, and analyzes negotiations of, and justifications behind, their consumption preferences. The analysis is based on a focus group study conducted in Denmark in 2016. Three different understandings of health can be found when consumers explain their preferences for organic products: Health as purity; Health as pleasure, and a Holistic perspective on health. The first two are familiar from the literature on food. The third, which reflects principles behind organic agriculture, is less documented in the context of consumption. Health as purity was the dominant understanding of health used by the participants when explaining why they purchased organic food products. When participants discussed healthy eating in general, detached from a specific context, most employed a purely nutritional perspective as a definitive argument in supporting claims about healthy eating. The paper’s findings have implications for future research on organic consumption. They also have practical implications for organic food producers and manufacturers.

Biocontrol potential of Pasteuria spp. for the management of plant parasitic nematodes.

Abstract Plant parasitic nematodes represent a severe threat for agriculture, causing yield losses for several food and industrial crops, worldwide. Actually, increasing demand for organic food products and for sustainable management practices requires the development of biocontrol approaches based on suitable antagonists. In this review, some traits of members of the bacterial genus Pasteuria are discussed, focusing on their biology and taxonomy, host range, specificity and application for host nematode regulation. Given the high specificity of Pasteuria spp. and the biodiversity recognized Within species, the exploitation of these parasites requires the collection of data on the isolates most suitable for practical use. Some traits of Pasteuria spp. biology appear favourable for biocontrol applications, such as the minimum impact on the other soil microorganisms and invertebrates, the durability of endospores, together with host specificity and regulation capability. Experimental evaluation of host-parasite compatibility for biocontrol purposes is a pre-requisite necessary for practical use. Isolates selection and evaluation may represent an additional cost in the development of commercial products and bioformulations based on mass cultivation of these bacteria. The Pasteuria spp. associated with nematode pests represent a valuable and widespread natural resource, whose benefits and application potential are not yet completely explored.

Trends in demand on the organic food market in the European countries

The sector of organic agriculture is attractive for investment, and the organic food market demonstrates a dynamic growth. The article suggests methodological approaches to the analysis of demand trends on the organic food market based on the use of growth curves. The dynamics of changes in the consumption of organic products per capita is characterized by a sequential single passage of the stages of development (growth), the achievement of maximum indicators (saturation), recessions, and cessation of existence. As the main factors determining the rate of development and the potential consumption of organic food products per capita, the level of incomes and life of the population was considered. The potential consumption of organic food products per capita in different countries is grounded, taking into account these factors. Based on the analysis of the functions of the growth rates of the per capita demand for organic food products derived from the estimated demand growth curves, the stages of the life cycle of organic food products on the European markets were analyzed, and the exhaustion of the potential demand for organic products in all considered countries except Britain was identified. It is expected that the further expansion of organic food production in the European producer countries will be facilitated by the reorientation to new markets actively importing this product (China, Russia, Japan, and Singapore).

Does organically produced lettuce harbor higher abundance of antibiotic resistance genes than conventionally produced?

The demand for organic food products, especially for organic vegetables has been growing rapidly in the last few decades. However, the risk of introducing more antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) to the vegetables by organic production procedures has long been overlooked. In our study, by using high-throughput quantitative PCR and 16sRNA Illumina sequencing technology, we investigated the abundance and diversity of ARGs and the microbial communities in conventionally (CPL) and organically produced lettuce (OPL). A total of 134 ARGs were detected in the phyllosphere and leaf endophyte of the samples. Absolute copy numbers of ARGs in phyllosphere were 8-fold higher in the OPL than in CPL. We also observed a significant difference in the microbial communities between OPL and CPL, and a lower diversity of both phyllosphere and leaf endophytic bacteria in OPL than in CPL. The Mantel test and variation partitioning analysis (VPA) suggested that the profile of ARGs is strongly affected by bacterial community compositions. Network analysis between ARGs and bacterial taxa indicated that eight bacterial families were implicated to be the potential hosts of ARGs. These results provide insights into the impacts of organic farming on the profiles of bacterial and ARG compositions in vegetables.
