A retrospective look at a DDA-centered collection strategy: Planning for the future of monograph acquisitions

The demand-driven acquisitions (DDA) model has been established as a standard component of collection development strategies for academic libraries. The University of Alabama's collection development strategy revolves around the large DDA program for acquiring electronic monographs and is supplemented by other methods of monographic acquisitions such as firm ordering, bulk eBook purchases, and more. While previous studies have confirmed the advantages of The University of Alabama's DDA plan early in its implementation, this study explores the long-term effectiveness of the DDA-centered collection strategy, seven years after it was first put into place, and examines the validity of the strategy as one bringing efficiency and high return on investment. Finally, this longitudinal study hopes to substantiate the DDA-centered collection strategy as one that could be a foundational model for other academic libraries to follow.

Experts or Dummies? Quality of E-Book Pool and User Selections in a Consortial Demand Driven Acquisition Program

Academic libraries are increasingly purchasing electronic books (e-books) via demand driven acquisitions (DDA) programs. However, there is no guarantee about the quality of DDA titles. This is especially true for consortially managed DDA pools or when pools include all titles from selected publishers. This study analyzes data from EBSCO’s GOBI acquisitions platform to assess the quality of the pool and purchased titles from the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries (CARL) publisher-based DDA program. Results showed that most available and selected titles were appropriate for academic libraries. Popular and lower level academic titles made up a relatively small portion of the DDA pool but were selected at a proportionally higher rate than other titles. The DDA pool was weighted towards titles that had been previously purchased by few GOBI libraries, but users tended to select titles that had been purchased by more GOBI libraries. Implications of these results are discussed from the point of view of a consortium member library using the DDA program as a supplement to its broader collections of print and electronic books.

Balance in Demand Driven Acquisitions: The Importance of Mindfulness and Moderation When Utilizing Just in Time Collection Development

The realities of budgetary constraints, and a transformative digital world, point to a future in which academic libraries continue to expand demand driven acquisitions in order to maintain necessary access. However, legitimate concern has arisen regarding the affect this shift might have on the coverage and scope of library collections. The gathering of diverse perspectives, and subjects that support minorities may fall to the way side through the further embrace of DDA, buried in fulfilling the needs of the majority. This paper investigates the University of Utah’s demand-driven acquisitions program and the potential for imbalance in the collection. Data regarding campus demographics and the DDA pool itself are considered. Rather than discouraging the use of DDA, the primary purpose of this research is to put forth tangible ways in which librarians can deliberately counterbalance the focus of DDA purchases in order to ensure collections remain inclusive and diverse.

Demand Driven Acquisition of E-books in a Small Online Academic Library: Growing Pains and Assessing Gains

ABSTRACTHow does a smaller, fully online academic library offer a wide and deep collection of academic level e-books to its distance learners in a sustainable and affordable way? The State University of New York (SUNY) Empire State College Online Library, with a staff of four, has used demand-driven e-book acquisitions since September 2013. Despite widespread publisher price increases, this DDA program continues to deliver quality content to users. This presentation will explore the e-book demand-driven acquisition (DDA) model in the context of that implementation. This will include in-depth analysis of usage data and costs, as well as impacts on course development, budget and inter-library loan.

A Data-driven Approach to Understanding the Demand-driven Acquisition Program at North Carolina State University

ABSTRACTAs demand-driven acquisition programs become more prevalent, the need for better data about those programs increases. This article details the results of a project at the North Carolina State University Libraries to blend together multiple sources of data, including ILS and COUNTER reports, for the purpose of gaining a better understanding of the intricacies of the demand-driven acquisition program.

Notes on Operations: A Scenario Analysis of Demand-Driven Acquisition (DDA) of E-Books in Libraries

Demand-Driven Acquisition (DDA) has been commonly adopted by academic libraries in the United States for acquiring e-books in recent years. Implementation of the e-book DDA model varies by library. This paper introduces and demonstrates a scenario analysis approach for libraries to evaluate, identify, and select a DDA plan that works best for them based on their DDA program data. This approach helps address some key questions facing libraries with a DDA e-book program: How may a DDA program be evaluated under different scenarios? Does a short-term loan (STL) option make sense? And, is the current DDA implementation a good fit for the library? The implications and related issues are discussed.

Demand-driven acquisition at HKUST library: the new normal

Purpose – This paper aims to evaluate the impact of three concurrent demand-driven acquisition (DDA) programs on e-book collection development at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Library. Design/methodology/approach – Counter Book Report 2 reports of the Ebrary, Wiley and JSTOR were analyzed from the launch date of the respective program to June 30, 2014. Findings – The value of two local DDA programs, Ebrary and Wiley, were seen. JSTOR program needs to be evaluated at local and consortial levels when the pilot is finished. Originality/value – The experience of HKUST Library will provide a reference point for libraries that are yet to implement their DDA program.

All About Demand-Driven Acquisition

This article reports on a talk delivered at the Mississippi State University Libraries eResource & Emerging Technologies Summit. The author introduces the concept of Demand-Driven Acquisition (DDA) for e-books and explains how it works. The author discusses predicting and controlling costs, as well as other implementation decisions. Finally, the author discusses the possibility of removing books from a DDA program and speculates on some of the effects of DDA on libraries and scholarly publishing.
