Determining the group of resource-oriented regions in the system for developing the concept of a regional development strategy

Regions with significant natural resource potential play an important role in ensuring the energy and economic security of the Russian Federation. To maximize the effect of using resource potential, scientifically based and methodologically correct regional strategies must be developed. For these purposes, it is necessary to develop a concept for a strategy for the regional development of resource regions, for which it is proposed to use the strategizing methodology of a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor V.L. Kvint. One of the first tasks when developing a concept is to identify a group of resource-oriented regions. To achieve this goal, the author’s definition of resource-oriented regions has been prepared, and based on an analysis of foreign and domestic practices, an algorithm for calculating the level of resource orientation has been proposed, based on 3 indicators: the share of mining in the gross regional product, the share of mining in the structure of regional employment and the degree of industry concentration. It is shown that for calculations using the proposed algorithm in terms of industry concentration, not only the Herfindahl–Hirmschan index can be used, but also the Shannon index, which is logically opposite to it, adapted for economic research.The calculations showed that the group of resource-oriented regions can include the Nenets, Yamalo–Nenets, Khanty–Mansiysk and Chukotka Autonomous Districts, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), as well as the Magadan and Sakhalin regions – these regions best meet the proposed definition of a resource-oriented region and can become the basis for developing the concept of a regional development strategy.

The Relationship Between Industry Concentration and the Level of Operating Segment Disclosure: The Moderating Effect of Audit Quality

This study aimed to examine the relationship between the degree of industry concentration which the company belongs and the level of operating segment disclosure. The study also aimed to test the impact of audit quality on the previous relationship, using a sample of 40 non-financial companies listed on the Egyptian stock exchange for five-year period 2016-2020.Using regression analysis, the results of the study showed a low level of operating segment disclosure in Egyptian companies in general. The results of the study also showed that there is a significant negative relationship between the degree of industry concentration and the level of operating segment disclosure. While the results showed an insignificant negative effect of audit quality on the relationship between the degree of industry concentration and the level of disclosure of the operating segments. The previous results were supported by robustness tests conducted by including additional control variables that include the board of directors’ characteristics, as well as using an alternative measure to measure the degree of industry concentration.

The nexus of ESG requirements and industry concentration

AbstractThis paper examines the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) requirements for an industry in an n‐oligopolistic model and investigates the relationship between the degree of industry concentration and the degree of ESG requirements. It is shown that the factors influencing the degree of ESG requirements include the number of firms, the elasticity of market demand, and the market concentration ratio. In the case of linear market demand, the degree of requirements is negatively affected by firm number only, regardless of the elasticity of market demand or market concentration ratio. In addition, the degree of ESG requirements is positively (negatively) related to the industry profit/concentration, when market demand is convex (concave). This paper demonstrates that the degree of ESG requirements is sensitive to firm number, market demand, and market concentration ratio and serves as a pragmatic reference for the government.

Research on the Existing Problems and Optimization Strategies of Nayuki Brand Marketing

In recent years, China’s tea market has been developing continuously. Many local brands have continued to develop, but there is a high degree of industry concentration, and the development of a small number of enterprises is limited. We take Nayuki’s tea as a typical example to analyze the marketing strategies of such enterprises. The problem. At the same time, as the leader of new-style tea brands, Luckin Coffee stands out in the fierce competition in the market. Its innovative marketing strategy can achieve new development and breakthroughs of the brand and bring benefits to more Chinese new-style tea companies. In order to inspire, so the improvement strategy of Nayuki’s tea brand development can be drawn under comparison. This paper adopts the method of literature case study and comparative analysis. Through the analysis, some conclusions are drawn: Nayuki’s tea has good product quality, but its marketing strategy is not perfect. Compared with the Ruixing coffee brand, it has a good marketing strategy. From this, it can be inspired that Nayuki’s tea brand can improve its marketing strategy by expanding sales channels, reducing product prices, increasing product innovation, and strengthening brand co-branding effects.

Vertical Integration Dynamics to Innovate in Technology Business

Companies try to acquire the finest advantages and techniques in a technologically advanced and end-to-end market to have a stronger foothold there. Although empirical research on this topic links IT to a decline in vertical integration, corporations are increasingly using this corporate strategy. The goal of this study is to show how over the past 22 years, scientific literature has changed with regard to how information technology (IT) affects vertical integration, one of the main types of corporate strategies. The findings demonstrated that vertical integration has been evolving in a balanced manner in a technological environment. Three categories—information technology, innovation, and processes—help explain this association and were discovered through cluster analysis. The direction of operational integration, the degree of industry concentration, demand unpredictability, and innovation should all be considered while making integration decisions.

A study on the agglomeration characteristics of the scallop aquaculture industry in China

Scallops are economically important shellfish widely cultured in China. In this study, the agglomeration characteristics of the scallop aquaculture industry in Chinese coastal provinces were explored based on data from the China Fishery Statistical Yearbook from 2012 to 2020 and the comparative advantage and concentration level of the scallop breeding industry. The data were analyzed using the comprehensive relative advantage index, location entropy, and industrial concentration degree method. Two main results revealed that Hebei Province had the highest comparative advantage in terms of efficiency, followed by Fujian, Guangdong, Shandong, Guangxi, Liaoning, and Zhejiang Provinces. Hebei Province had the highest comparative advantage in scale, followed by Liaoning, Shandong, Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, and Zhejiang Provinces. Additionally, the scallop cultivation industry in Hebei, Shandong, and Liaoning Provinces showed a high concentration, and the proportion of scallop production in the national production (CR4) in the three provinces, as well as in Guangdong, accounted for more than 99% year-round. Overall, Hebei, Shandong, and Liaoning Provinces had a comparative advantage in scale, comprehensive comparative advantage, and industrial agglomeration.

Global carbon transfer and emissions of aluminum production and consumption

Aluminum is the second most used metal after iron and steel worldwide, and its production is highly energy-intensive. It's increasingly important to focus on carbon reduction in the aluminum industry . The global aluminum cycle depends on international trade with great influence on the carbon distribution, but few studies have analyzed the aluminum industry from the perspective of carbon transfer. We analyze global carbon emissions and transfers from aluminum production, consumption, and trade from 2000 to 2018 to reveal the carbon distribution across regions and countries. The results show that 1) the aluminum trade carbon transfer increased from 99 to 114 Mt, mainly from resource-rich Oceania and Africa to faster-developing or developed regions such as Asia, Europe and North America, with a high degree of industrial concentration; 2) the carbon emissions of aluminum production increased from 363 to 1005 Mt, with China accounting for the largest share; 3) different countries had different consumption structure, and the northern hemisphere as the main consumption region has greater potential for recycling and emission reduction. There is a long way to go for the aluminum industry toward its low-carbon transition, and this study will provide important insights into carbon reduction in the global aluminum industry. • Global carbon emission and transfer of aluminum through production, consumption, and trade. • Alumina and primary aluminum account for more than 90% process emissions. • Carbon transfer in aluminum trade shows a trend from resource-rich South to developing or developed North. • Energy consumption for aluminum production varies significantly in different regions.

Exploring the Main Effect of e-Banking on the Banking Industry Concentration Degree on Predicting the Future of the Banking Industry: A Case Study

Today, regarding the rapid growth of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), e-commerce, and the subsequent expansion of electronic banking, the banking market structure is also expected to dramatically be changed. This paper aims to explore the main effect of electronic banking on the structure of the Iranian banking industry by investigating the banking market concentration degree. To accomplish this aim, an intelligent hybrid model is developed based on multilayer perceptron neural network and fuzzy regression of the effects of banking on the relative electronic share of banks. In the developed method, the neural network parameters such as weights and errors have been considered as the fuzzy parameters to model it under uncertainty. Ultimately, the descriptive statistics are utilized to evaluate how the difference in relative size of banks concerning e-banking has changed, in addition to exploring the main effect of e-banking on the bank’s contribution described as a neural network-fuzzy regression model. Moreover, it shows how the concentration degree in the Iranian banking sector has been reduced. The implemented analysis of the reasons for this decrease reveals that the share of banks has decreased due to an increase in the share of the small banks. Furthermore, model estimation confirms that there exists a positive relationship between banks’ share and the use of electronic banking. Besides, the small banks have strongly been shown to utilize the e-banking so that it would lead to an increase in their share and a decrease in the concentration degree. As such, it can be concluded that e-banking has reduced the concentration degree in Iran. The descriptive statistics are employed to prove it.

The Impact of Industrial Transfer on Industrial Structure Upgrading in Central China Take Hubei Province as an example

In the construction plan of China (Hubei) pilot free trade zone issued by China (Hubei) pilot free trade zone in 2018, it is pointed out that industrial transfer should be orderly undertaken, which undoubtedly provides a strong institutional guarantee for Hubei to undertake industrial transfer. This paper analyzes the mechanism of industrial transfer on industrial structure upgrading: capital accumulation mechanism, technology progress mechanism, industry aggregation mechanism. At the same time through empirical analysis it is concluded that: build the double logarithm model of Hubei province to undertake industry shift after the provincial labor resources, science and technology innovation ability, industrial concentration degree of ascension for the upgrading of industrial structure in Hubei province has a certain role in promoting, especially the size of the capital and the increase of the number of high-tech talent to upgrade the industrial structure to promote the most significant effect. Therefore, the government should intensify efforts to introduce domestic and foreign capital, cultivate and attract more high-tech talents, focus on improving the quality of workers, expand the scale of industrial agglomeration within the province, and enhance the ability of scientific and technological innovation.

China’s regional industrial two-stage system – Efficiencies and their influencing factors

To reduce waste discharge, China’s industrial system has been divided into stages of clean production (CP) and waste treatment (WT). Based on the conceptual framework of this industrial two-stage system, this study develops two network slacks-based measure models to evaluate the efficiency of this system from the perspectives of outside peers and inside managers. To identify the inefficient stages for each region during the period of 2011–2015, CP and WT efficiencies are further evaluated. Then, the factors influencing CP and WT efficiencies are explored using the censored least absolute deviations model. The results indicate that the industrial two-stage efficiencies of the external model are lower than those of the internal model, have more discriminatory power, and a similar efficiency rank. Moreover, CP efficiencies are higher than or equal to WT efficiencies for almost all regions. A higher economic development level significantly improved CP and WT efficiencies, while a higher industrial concentration degree significantly decreased these. Both influencing factors exerted a larger influence on WT efficiency than on CP efficiency. The strength of environmental protection did not significantly affect CP efficiency but exerted a positive effect on WT efficiency.

Modelización de mercados oligopolistas: el caso de madera para suelos. España 1994-2012.

Los indicadores económicos clave de la industria de los suelos de madera muestran un reducido (cuatro) número de competidores, un alto grado de concentración industrial entre las principales empresas y barreras importantes, que bloquean efectivamente la entrada de nuevos fabricantes. Este trabajo estudia modelizar el comportamiento de los cuatro principales productores (dos de parqué tradicional y dos de tarima flotante) y de los consumidores de tres tipos de suelos de madera describiendo un panorama estratégico con resultados diferentes en función del tipo de suelo (Roble básico, Roble selecto y Jatoba). Los resultados del análisis de demanda muestran que las elasticidades respecto al precio propio son relativamente altas, por lo que los productores corren el riesgo de disminuir gravemente sus cuotas de mercado, si elevan sus precios en solitario. Además, a los consumidores les cuesta distinguir entre los bienes, altamente homogéneos, de los dos productores de tarima y los dos productores de parqué. En relación al análisis de oferta, los productores de Roble fijan precios en el mismo sentido, siendo el primer productor un líder. Por contra, en el mercado de la Jatoba existe una mayor rivalidad entre los tres primeros productores, debido a la búsqueda de cuota de mercado y realizan modificaciones de precio en sentido contrario.

Impacts of city size change and industrial structure change on CO2 emissions in Chinese cities

The cities' area accounts for only 2% of the world's surface area, but the cities' population accounts for 50% of the total population and produces more than 80% of the total CO2 emissions. So the cities have a key position in solving the global challenge of climate change. In order to estimate the impacts of city size change and industrial structure change on CO2 emissions, based on the background, the data availability of the CO2 emissions per person, the economic scale, the size of land use, the industrial concentration degree and the industrial structure change in 50 cities in different sizes (the population size between 0.5 million and 1 million, 1–2 million, 2–4 million and more than 4 million) from 2005 to 2014, the paper studies the impact of the city size change and the industrial structure change on CO2 emissions. The results show that the increase in the sizes of cities can bring in the rise of CO2 emissions and the impacts on CO2 emissions in different city sizes are significant. Meanwhile, both industrial agglomeration and industrial structure change have a significant role in the CO2 emissions reduction. The paper finds out that (1) the medium-sized cities produce relatively fewer CO2 emissions than the smaller cities and the bigger cities. As smaller cities are not conducive to save land and also can't play the externalities of industry agglomeration, leading to the reduction in energy efficiency. Bigger cities may produce all kinds of city diseases. The medium-sized cities with the population of 1 million and 2 million can have relatively higher energy efficiency and fewer city diseases, which may produce lower CO2 emissions. (2) economic growth can increase CO2 emissions.(3) the industrial structure change has effects on CO2 emissions, and CO2 emissions from the secondary industry are the largest in the three industries. So, the government should reasonably give priority development of medium-sized cities with the population between 1 million and 2 million, and adjust energy consumption structure and the industrial structure to give priority to the tertiary industry to reduce CO2 emissions in China's cities.

Consumer social learning and industrial dynamics

ABSTRACTIn this paper, we propose an agent-based model in which industrial dynamics depend on consumer social learning and firm innovation efforts. We draw on behavioral economics and consumer psychology to model consumer learning as a process of social adaptation-cum-individual novelties which operates within a stochastic dynamic network. In our model, consumers create original patterns of behavior, but they also imitate similar others through a (degree-dependent) influence-biased process of change. Likewise, consumer behavior is shaped by firms which attempt to capture larger market shares. Thus, we propose a model in which consumers update their position (tastes) in a product characteristics space through innovation and adaptation, and co-evolve with profit-seeking firms which observe and shape evolving consumer behavior. We simulate the resulting market process obtaining trajectories and stationary states for the degree of industrial concentration, the number of producers, and certain features of the industry lifecycle.The analysis of the model reveals how three demand parameters – consumer ‘insistence’ (capturing inertia in decision-making), the ‘locality’ of consumer learning, and consumer ‘loyalty’ to firms – affect industry evolution. Likewise, the model generates a continuum of limit industrial structures – from perfect competition, to oligopolies or monopolies – with said demand parameters influencing the stationary states.

Input–output linkages and the propagation of domestic productivity shocks: assessing alternative theories with stochastic simulation

ABSTRACTRelatively small sectoral productivity shocks could lead to sizable macroeconomic variability. Whereas most contributions in the literature analyze the issue of aggregate sensitivity using simple general equilibrium models, a novel approach is proposed in this paper, based on stochastic simulations with a global computable general equilibrium model. We find that the variability of the GDP, induced by sectoral shocks, is basically determined by the degree of industrial concentration as measured by the Herfindahl index of industrial value added. The degree of centrality in inter-industrial connectivity, measured by the standard deviation of second-order degrees, is mildly significant, but it is also correlated with the industrial concentration index. After controlling for the correlation effect, we find that connectivity turns out to be statistically significant, although less so than granularity.

Spatial differences of exergy use of cement manufacturing industry in China based on extended exergy accounting method

Factory-level data from 23 provinces and some national statistical data in cement manufacturing industry and socio-economies in 2012 are used to analyze the spatial distribution of exergy use for China’s cement manufacturing industry by the Extended Exergy Accounting method. This method takes full account of the inclusion of energy and raw material supply and other external factors (capital, labor and environment) into a comprehensive resource cost assessment. The extended exergy consumption and its intensity quantitatively at the provincial levels of cement production were calculated and then the agglomeration level of exergy use at the regional level was also evaluated. Based on this analysis, their spatial difference in size and efficiency of exergy use at the provincial level were identified. Moreover, their regional characteristics were revealed. Some important results could be drawn as follows. First, the invisible social cost accounted for 1/10 of the total exergy use in cement manufacturing industry, while the energy element shared about 9/10. Second, the gross distribution of exergy use in China’s cement manufacturing industry was mainly concentrated in the eastern region like Anhui and Shandong provinces, and in the western region like Sichuan province. In terms of exergy use, the coal and electricity were the highest of energy costs in the eastern region, whereas the cost of capital, labor and external environmental factors highlighted the invisible social cost for cement production in the central and western regions to some extent. Third, the efficiency distribution of exergy use in China’s cement manufacturing industry illustrated an incremental feature from west to east, especially for the energy, labor and capital efficiencies. An evaluation on the environmental efficiency indicated that provinces or regions like Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Shanxi have undertaken much higher environmental costs. Fourth, the 23 provinces could be classified into eight groups by the Euclidean distance model using the gross and efficiency results of exergy use. Fifth, the high industry concentration degree is the main driving factor of exergy efficiency improvement for cement manufacturing industry in China.

PENGARUH KONSENTRASI INDUSTRI TERHADAP EFISIENSI INDUSTRI KECAP DI INDONESIA (ISIC 15493)

This study was aimed at finding the development and influence oh industry concentration on the efficiency of the soy sauce industry in Indonesia. The data were secondary ones taken from 1993 – 2011. This study was based on the theory of industrial organization, industrial concentration, and industrial efficiency. Descriptive quantitative was the method in this study. The degree of the industrial efficiency in soy sauce industry was influenced by the number of companies operating and producing soy sauce. The degree of industrial concentration in soy sauce industry was measured by using value added in industrial concentration divided by the number of soy sauce companies. The degree of soy sauce industrial concentration in the last year of observation was 7296550.747. The degree of industrial efficiency in the last year of observation was 0.91. There was a positive influence of the industrial concentration on the industrial efficiency. It was found that 50 % of the efficiency variable was influenced by the degree of industrial concentration. The rest was influenced by other factors. Empirical Analysis of Technical Efficiency in Information Services

With the high development of knowledge-based economy, information service industry plays an important role in driving economic transition. We use stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) method to estimate the technical efficiency in seven cities of Zhejiang Province in China. We find that the average technical efficiency of information services industry is high and have different developed trends among the cities. The human capital、industrial concentration degree, openness and urbanization have significant impact on technical efficiency, while government behaviors do not show significant effect.
