<p>The article substantiates the objection to V.S. Yurkevich to present the posi[1]tion towards understanding giftedness and developing creativity. The main objection is related to the thesis that the search activity "lies on the surface", but has not been investigated by anyone. In addition, the definition of giftedness only in terms of the height of abilities, with the absence of manifestations of creativity emphasized by the author, separates giftedness from creativity. At the same time, the spread of understanding of giftedness as high abilities implied the possibility of manifestations of creativity. The studies of V.S. Rotenberg, V.V. Arshavsky the biological concept of search activity. The correlation of primitive forms of search activity, which ensure survival through adaptation, and higher forms of human behavior <em>–</em> search and research activities and creativity (phenomena of pre-adaptation), which are based on cognitive motivation, are substantiated. An indication of the presence of search activity in its various forms in the scientific concepts and practice of education is given.</p>

Prospective Teachers’ Beliefs About Human Intelligence in a Turkish Sample

Research consistently reports a moderate to a strong relationship between intelligence and academic performance. For about a century, the concept of intelligence has often been used in the definition of giftedness and the identification of gifted students along with other data sources, although some experts are against it. An understanding of prospective teachers' beliefs about intelligence is important to unearth how they perceive intelligence and giftedness. We replicated Warne and Burton's (2020) study with 157 prospective Turkish teachers. They were selected using an online convenience sampling method from various departments of a faculty of education. Of the participants, 72.6% were female and 27.4% were male. We adapted Warne and Burton’s (2020) survey, translating it to Turkish and administered it online to understand the prospective teachers’ beliefs about intelligence as well as to examine if these beliefs differ across cultures. We found that the prospective teachers’ understanding was mostly in line with the original study as well as the mainstream views of intelligence. We also found similar results to the original study, regarding the components of intelligence. Like the original study, the Turkish sample showed an understanding of the relationship between education and intelligence; however, the items about biological and genetic influences on intelligence, the plausible causes of group differences, the life outcomes of intelligence, and a cross-cultural comparison of intelligence had a low response uniformity in both studies. Similar findings across samples may be attributed to common, popular views as well as similar textbooks or other resources used in both cultures. The samples (e.g., educational level and age) may be partially responsible for the differences in the findings across both cultures.

The Nature of Support Provided to Gifted Primary School Students Is Based on the Teacher’s Concept of Giftedness

The aim of the research was to identify the type of support that teachers provide to gifted students in grades 4–6 of primary schools in Poland in relation to their concepts of giftedness. Teachers’ understanding of the category of gifted students was analyzed: What do they find crucial in identifying gifted students? What areas of gifted students’ development are most important to them? Are there differences in the strategies for supporting gifted students between teachers who have different concepts of giftedness and who teach different subjects? The research was conducted on a group of 188 teachers using the standardized 20-item Balanced Development of Gifted Students Questionnaire. It helped identify the scope of the teachers’ activities in the cognitive, emotional/social, motivational, and creative spheres. It was shown that the dominant concept of giftedness among the surveyed teachers was cognitive and that their activities supporting gifted students were mainly aimed at mental development and knowledge acquisition. Support of the emotional/social sphere of gifted students was least frequently indicated by the respondents. There was consistency between the type of support provided and the teacher’s preferred concept of giftedness. There were significant differences in the definition of giftedness and the related type of support between teachers of different subjects. The subject which they taught also significantly differentiated the number of students identified as gifted: The most gifted students were identified by the art teachers, while the least were identified by the math teachers. The results may serve as guidelines for developing teachers’ competencies in working with gifted students by popularizing the concept of balanced development and making them aware of the links between beliefs about giftedness and the type of support provided.

Giftedness and Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review.

Throughout the years, several myths have arisen suggesting that children diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders possess unusually high abilities in specific domains, depending on the disorder. On the other hand, special skills and talents in children with neurodevelopmental disorders are most commonly overshadowed by their difficulties and overlooked. The purpose of this systematic review is to examine the association between giftedness and neurodevelopmental disorders. The related articles published in PubMed, Google Scholar, PsycINFO, and Embase up to December 31, 2020, as well as their reference lists, were reviewed systematically. A total of 6069 studies were scanned, and 32 of them (9904 subjects) were deemed eligible for this systematic review. Studies have supported associations between autism spectrum disorders and music ability. Contradictory results have been published regarding associations between giftedness, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and specific learning disorders. Diagnostic methods seemed to modify associations between giftedness and neurodevelopmental disorders. The dearth of the available evidence is prominent. More research is needed to investigate the field of dual exceptionality. Longitudinal studies are needed, addressing methodological challenges pertaining to variability in the definition of giftedness.

Gifted for whom? Individualism, dyadism, and collectivism in the definition of giftedness

Gifts can be individually, dyadically, or collectively chosen and oriented. Society, in its identification of the gifted, has chosen to focus on individual and sometimes dyadic goods. This practice represents a culture of individualism, but it has become solipsistic. We argue that identification instead should focus on those most likely to help to achieve a collective common good—who will bestow on others, gifts that are broadly beneficial especially to those most in need of help.

Современные зарубежные исследования тревожности интеллектуально одаренных школьников

The article analyzes the foreign publications for the last five years on the research of anxiety, its different types and their relationship with cognitive abilities, academic achievements, emotional and social development of schoolchildren. The main attention is paid to studies of the anxiety in intellectually gifted children as well as the contradictions in ideas about giftedness as a special vulnerability to problems or as a resource for their successful overcoming. These contradictions emerge mainly due to differences in the definitions of giftedness and gifted children. It is shown that intellectually gifted children face the same age-related development problems as their peers, and cope with these problems no less, and sometimes even more successfully. At the same time, the recognition of unique problems for intellectually gifted children that are associated with increased anxiety and other emotional disorders, as well as the need for psychological support, is emphasized.

RETRACTED: The assessment of critical thinking skills of gifted children before and after taking a critical thinking development course

Abstract The development of critical thinking is a fundamental task of the modern education system. However, practically, it turns out that a number of teachers are not competent enough in this area. The purpose of the study is to identify the most universal and valid methods for the dynamic assessment of the level of critical thinking in children. There are also difficulties associated with the assessment of the level of critical thinking, the selection of valid methods for its study, especially when it comes to preschool or primary school children. The participants (186 children 6–8 years ages from 3 schools of Moscow (Russian Federation) in the group of gifted children did not fall into the groups with a low development of critical thinking, and the participants in the control group did not fall into the group with the highest or the highest level of development of critical thinking. In two tests, the data for the gifted and control groups showed high correlation values between the definition of giftedness and the level of critical thinking development (0.958 and 0.962 in the static test and 0.659 and 0.908 in the dynamic test, respectively). Therefore, it is relevant to select valid methods that would allow the assessment of critical thinking as one of the criteria for the giftedness of a child in dynamics, that is, in the process of developmental learning. During the research such methods were used – sculpture method, absurdity method, verbal fantasy method, drawing method, think of a game method. The research results have shown that giftedness has a psychophysiological basis, the described test methods are valid and can be used for the assessment of the level of critical thinking and the quality of the educational process.

In this essay, I argue that our society misdefines giftedness, placing undue emphasis on analytical skills. Moreover, the problem is getting worse. Amplifying factors in society are narrowing rather than broadening our definition of giftedness. I discuss what is happening, why, and what we can do about it.

Constructing Giftedness in a Due Process Hearing: Deconstructing an Administrative Law Judge’s Decision

The purpose of this study is to explore how a Florida administrative law judge (ALJ) adjudicated the giftedness of one student who was found ineligible to be enrolled in a gifted education program. Specifically, we explore the discourse in an ALJ’s final order to uncover how an ALJ navigates through conflict and deconstructs the conflicting expert opinions and special education state statute on the definition of giftedness and then constructs giftedness from these sources to arrive at the final decision. Utilizing qualitative discourse analysis, we explore what this construction can tell us about the interpretation of the nature of giftedness and what counts as data. Findings in this case suggest that the ALJ gives more weight to experience and expertise.

INFORMAL COMPONENT IN THE EDUCATIONAL WORK WITH GIFTED CHILDREN IN CHINA

Informal Education is a general term for education that can occur outside of a structured curriculum. Nowadays it is mainly used to provide people of different ages and social categories with additional knowledge and skills needed for their professional activity or fulfilling interest. China today also uses such kind of providing educational services mainly for children and youths. These activities are seen by the state educational system as the basic level of gifted children`s detection and separating them from the other ones. Modern Chinese educational theory has its own ideas as to the problem of gifted children starting from the definition of giftedness and up to the place of such children in the society including the welfare and legal issues. Seeing giftedness as “ability to work and methodical training” the Chinese educational and welfare system is totally built up by this conception. The article using various research methods (such as theoretical literature and current Chinese legislation`s analysis, comparative methods, method of personal experience etc.) represents the Chinese experience as to educational work with gifted children especially in the field of informal education as well as general ideas of the Giftedness theory in the Chinese educational practice.

Gagné's Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent in Australian education

It is commonly stated that in Australia Gagne's Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent is generally referred to, applied, used, or adopted in most contexts related to the education and support of gifted and talented children and youth. To examine the extent to which this claim is true, an analysis was conducted of policy and related documents, as well as websites and grey literature, published or made public by key educational bodies and by associations whose concern is the gifted and/or the talented. The evidence from this analysis shows that in fact at least some of this claim as stated is simply not the case. In particular, it was found that most of those who do refer to Gagne or his Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent, with or without a reference, tend to quote, or partially quote, only the definitions of giftedness and of talent, then make little if any further reference to the model itself.

Identification Process of Young Gifted Learners: The Malaysian Experience

The world has seen many gifted individuals who leave profound marks in many spheres of human life. These individuals are classified as prodigies and are assets to any civilizations. Some of these individuals are more fortunate than others when they are identified early. However, the less fortunate ones are never identified, and continue to live their lives in misery because they could not find a fit in the society. Inevitably, they become the underachievers and their potentials are never uncovered. The questions such as “can we identify the gifted students from young?” or “what are the strategies that can be effectively used to identify a gifted child?” remain as questions commonly researched by scholars in the area. This paper will answer these questions by looking at the present scenario on definition of giftedness, characteristics of young gifted students, the process of gifted students’ identification in general, and an example of identification process conducted by PERMATApintar™ – the Malaysian National Gifted Center.

What characterizes children nominated as gifted by teachers? A closer consideration of working memory and intelligence

Teacher nominations are often used in school settings to identify gifted children. However, although high intelligence is part of almost all definitions of giftedness, prior research has consistently shown that not all children nominated as gifted by teachers have high intelligence. In order to further understand the characteristics of these students, we herein explore the role of another cognitive construct, namely working memory (WM). In a sample comprising N = 81 fourth graders, both WM and intelligence showed the same predictive value for characterizing teacher-nominated gifted children, pointing to the importance of the thus-far-unattended WM for characterizing these students.

A Review of the Contemporary Concepts of Giftedness and Talent

Gifted, talented, precocious, high aptitude, high achieving, and creative are all terms used to designate children of high ability, skills, or performance. There is no agreement about one definition of giftedness and talent. Since the definition and conception of giftedness and talent is guiding the identification process and the nurturing options as well, more efforts need to be taken to highlight the cross points among these definitions. In this regard, four perspectives of giftedness and talent models were reviewed in this paper. In domain-general perspective, giftedness is measured by conventional intelligence tests. Domain-specific perspective is shedding the light on more specific fields of giftedness and talent. System perspectives added other psychological variables to the construct of giftedness and talent such as motivation. The developmental perspectives include variables external to the individual such as the environment.

A Concept of Talent: Aspect of a School Librarian

ABSTRACTThe article deals with different concepts of giftedness around the world and with appropriate pedagogical approach to gifted pupils. Gifted pupils are treated as pupils with special educational needs. There are many definitions of giftedness. It is agreed that it is a combination of intellectual abilities and creativity. It is important to recognize a gifted child. There are different pedagogical approaches to gifted children around the world. All pedagogical staff including school librarians is responsible for adequate service provision for gifted pupils.

Creativity, Giftedness and Education

In this article, conceptions of creativity in giftedness and their implications for education are reviewed. First, the definition of giftedness is examined taking into consideration the difference between intellectual giftedness and creative giftedness and the difference between potential and talent. Second, the nature of creativity based on the multivariate approach is explored. Third, various measures of creativity are presented. Finally, the effect of different pedagogical methods and the influence of teachers on the development of creativity are examined.

Devido à carência de pesquisas sobre o tema, o presente estudo teve por objetivo realizar uma revisão das publicações periódicas brasileiras sobre superdotação em duas bases de dados, Scielo e Pepsic. Os resultados apontaram a existência de 19 artigos, teóricos e empíricos, publicados entre os anos de 2002 e 2009, os quais abordam distintas dimensões do tema, tais como: definições conceituais, modelos e formas de identificação, modelos de atendimento e programas de enriquecimento, leis brasileiras que norteiam a atuação de diferentes profissionais junto a esse público específico, pesquisas com professores, famílias e o ambiente escolar, estudos sobre a dimensão sócio-emocional e por fim, as desordens comportamentais e emocionais vinculadas à superdotação. A análise dos artigos permitiu concluir o interesse recente pela temática, justificando algumas dificuldades que ainda são notadas, tais como divergências na definição do conceito e a falta de instrumentos específicos validados e normatizados. The definition of giftedness is related to the existence of high abilities in several and different fields and involves the study of process as intelligence, motivation, creativity and leadership. Due to the lack of research in this area, the present study aimed to review researches about giftedness on Brazilian periodic publications, in two databases: Scielo and Pepsic. The results pointed to the existence of 19 theorical and empiric articles, published between 2002 and 2009, that approached distinct dimensions of giftedness: conceptual definitions, models and forms of identification, models of attendance, Brazilian laws to guide the performance, researches with teachers, family and school environment, studies of cognitive, social and emotional dimension, finally behaviors and emotional disorders related to the giftedness. The articles analysis allowed concluding the recent interest for the theme, it was observed divergences in the definition of the concept, the lack of specific tests, with validity and standards, beyond the recognition of the importance of the school environment and the psychologis

Searching for Evidence-Based Practice

A search of the literature from the past 30 years reveals that there is a dearth of research surrounding effective interventions for intellectually gifted children in the early childhood years. The findings of 11 empirical studies of educational provisions for young gifted children were located and the methodological rigor of the studies examined. Aspects problematic to research with young gifted children are discussed, including issues relating to sample sizes, definitions of giftedness, difficulties in conducting experimental studies, finding appropriate standardized measures for use with gifted children, and measurement of program outcomes. Suggestions are made for strengthening future research in the field of early childhood gifted education.
