US Cancer Mortality Trends Among Asian and Pacific Islander Populations

Cancer is the leading cause of death among Asian American individuals and the second leading cause of death among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander people. To evaluate longitudinal cancer mortality trends from 1999 to 2020 among Asian American and Pacific Islander populations in the US by demographic characteristics. This cross-sectional study used the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database to obtain age-adjusted cancer death rates among Asian American and Pacific Islander individuals of all ages between January 1, 1999, and December 31, 2020. Data were analyzed from January 12 to March 19, 2024. Age, sex, cancer type, and US census regions. Trends and average annual percent changes (AAPCs) in age-adjusted cancer-specific mortality (CSM) rates for non-Hispanic Asian American and Pacific Islander populations were estimated by cancer type, age, sex, and region using Joinpoint regression. Between 1999 and 2020, 305 386 Asian American and Pacific Islander individuals (median [IQR] age, 69.5 [58.5-79.2] years; 51.1% male) died of cancer in the US. Overall, the CSM rate decreased by 1.5% annually. Men experienced a greater CSM rate decrease (AAPC, -1.8%; 95% CI, -2.2% to -1.3%) compared with women (AAPC, -1.1%; 95% CI: -1.2% to -1.0%). For women, death rates decreased for most cancer types but increased for uterine (AAPC, 2.5%; 95% CI, 2.0%-3.0%) and brain and central nervous system (AAPC, 1.4%; 95% CI: 0.7%-2.1%) cancers. Colorectal cancer mortality rates increased among men aged 45 to 54 years (AAPC, 1.3%; 95% CI, 0.5%-2.1%). Liver and intrahepatic bile duct cancer mortality increased for both men and women in all US census regions, uterine cancer mortality increased in all regions for women, and pancreatic cancer mortality increased in the Midwest for both men and women. Although these findings show an overall decrease in CSM among Asian American and Pacific Islander populations, specific cancer types exhibited increased mortality rates, with further disparities by sex and age. Targeted, culturally adapted clinical and public health interventions are needed to narrow disparities in cancer mortality.

The Potential Benefit of a Novel Urine Biosensor Platform for Lung Cancer Detection in the Decision-Making Process: From the Bench to the Bedside

Background: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Lung cancer screening and early detection resulted in a decrease in cancer-specific mortality; however, it introduced additional dilemmas and adherence barriers for patients and providers. Methods: Innovations such as biomolecular diagnosis and biosensor-based technology improve the detection and stratification of high-risk patients and might assist in overcoming adherence barriers, hence providing new horizons for better selection of screened populations. Conclusions: In the present manuscript, we discuss some of the dilemmas clinicians are currently facing during the diagnosis and treatment processes. We further highlight the potential benefits of a novel biosensor platform for lung cancer detection during the decision making process surrounding lung cancer.

The "Medicare effect" on head and neck cancer diagnosis and survival.

Uninsured individuals age 55-64 experience disproportionately poor outcomes compared to their insured counterparts. Adequate coverage may prevent these delays. This study investigates a "Medicare-effect" on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) diagnosis and treatment. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was queried for persons ages 60-70 years in the United States from 2000 to 2016 with HNSCC. A "Medicare effect" was defined as an increase in incidence, reduction in advanced stage presentation, and/or decrease in cancer-specific mortality (CSM). Compared to their Medicaid or uninsured counterparts, patients age 65 have an increased incidence of HNSCC diagnosis, reduction in advanced stage presentation, decrease in cancer-specific mortality, and higher likelihood of receiving cancer-specific surgery. Patients age 65 with Medicare have decreased incidence of HNSCC, less hazard of late-stage diagnosis, and lower cancer-specific mortality than their Medicaid or uninsured counterparts, supporting the idea of a "Medicare effect" in HNSCC.

Does adherence to lipid-lowering medications improve cancer survival? A nationwide study of breast and colorectal cancer, and melanoma.

Inconclusive findings of lipid-lowering medications (LLMs) on cancer survival benefit require more evidence. We tested the hypothesis that adherence to this drug is associated with reduced cancer-specific mortality in a homogeneous population who had used this drug before cancer diagnosis. The Australian Cancer Database was linked to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme database, and to the National Death Index (up to 2015). Medication adherence was calculated by proportion of days covered. Cox regression models with time-varying covariates were used to derive multivariable-adjusted cause-specific hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the associations between adherence to LLMs, statins, lipophilic, and hydrophilic statins and cancer-specific mortality. From 2003 to 2013, 3 separate cohorts of 20 046, 11 719 and 6430 female patients with newly diagnosed breast, colorectal cancer, and melanoma respectively were identified. The 1-year adherence was similar at 1-year prediagnosis in the 3 cohorts, on average 82%. Each 10% increase in 1-year adherence to LLMs was inversely associated with cancer-specific mortality among women with breast cancer (fully adjusted HR = 0.92, 95% CI 0.91-0.93), colorectal cancer (fully adjusted HR = 0.92, 95% CI 0.91-0.93), or melanoma (fully adjusted HR = 0.97, 95% CI 0.94-1.00). The reductions in cancer-specific mortality were more pronounced for women who adhered to lipophilic than hydrophilic statins in all 3 cancers albeit not statistically significant for melanoma. Among LLM users, adherence to this drug is associated with a decrease in cancer-specific mortality. If confirmed, LLMs could be considered as an adjuvant cancer therapy to improve prognosis in cancer survivors.

The Impact of Diet on Breast Cancer Outcomes.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, yet conclusive evidence of the effects of dietary modification in breast cancer survivors is lacking. Here, we summarize the literature and highlight important data regarding the association between dietary interventions and breast cancer outcomes. Long-term follow-up and secondary analysis of the Women's Health Initiative study demonstrated a significant improvement in overall survival for women who were randomized to the low-fat diet pattern compared with those in the usual-diet group. Dietary quality as measured by Healthy Eating Index score was also associated with both a decrease in cancer-specific mortality and overall mortality. Despite current evidence on the role of diet and nutrition in breast cancer outcomes, conclusive data to translate current findings to clinical practice is lacking and requires multidisciplinary prospective research to advance the field.
