Impact of a teacher-training MOOC on the Pedagogy of Death during the pandemic

The objective of this study was to determine the impact of a MOOC on the attitudes of pre-service and in-service teachers toward education on death. The study adopted a pre- and post-test design. Participants (N = 139) answered the Death Education Attitudes Scale-Teachers (DEAS-T) questionnaire at the beginning and end of the course. The results confirmed significant differences between the pre- and post-course applications in the three scale factors—need for training in the Pedagogy of Death, inclusion of death in education, and educational awareness of death. Open-access, free, mass training through a MOOC could have a positive impact on attitudes toward death education among both pre- and in-service teachers.

How Do School Principals Perceive Education that Includes Death? A Phenomenological Study

ABSTRACT An education that includes death is lacking in schools, even during this period of the pandemic caused by the Covid-19 virus. The objective of this study was to attain an exploratory understanding of the school principals’ views on death education. The study, undertaken in Spain, adopted a phenomenological design, carrying out interviews with 7 school principals. The main findings were that death was not present, with a clear educational purpose, in their schools’ curricula. Hence the inclusion of death in education requires a change of perspective in death education, based on the knowledge developed by the Pedagogy of Death.

What do teachers think of death education?

This study sets out to address a gap in research into teachers’ attitudes and opinions toward death education. To meet this objective, two complementary instruments were designed and validated: the Death Education Attitudes Scale-Teachers (DEAS-T), which showed suitable psychometric values, and the Death Education Questionnaire-Teachers (DEQ-T). The sample comprised 683 teachers from a range of schools. The results show moderately positive attitudes toward death education. Variables such as gender, age, type of teacher, and religious beliefs all influenced results. The findings argue in favor of the inclusion of death in education and teacher training.

The presence of death in Spanish education law (1812–2006)

The objective of this study is to determine whether death has been present, and if so in what way, in Spanish education law from 1812 to 2006. The presence of 25 terms semantically related to death was analyzed in laws and regulations on school curricula. Death is generally absent as a directly approachable phenomenon within the given period, except in scattered regulations which, as a rule, link death in education to religion. From the beginnings of the democratic period in Spain (1975), socially relevant subjects with indirect but significant relationships with death, such as biodiversity and the Holocaust, appear.

Antecedentes internacionales de la Pedagogía de la muerte

La muerte es un fenómeno universal y perenne para el ser humano. Pese a ello, la pedagogía de la muerte es un tema tabú en las escuelas. No se ha tomado conciencia de su valor formativo. Las investigaciones y propuestas son aisladas, si bien articulan una base teórico-práctica importante para desarrollar una posible pedagogía de la muerte. En este artículo se presenta una revisión teórica de los antecedentes internacionales de la pedagogía de la muerte. Se han revisado artículos publicados en revistas científicas de impacto, revistas de difusión en educación, tesis doctorales, libros, capítulos de libro, así como conferencias, comunicaciones y ponencias en congresos o jornadas científicas. El propósito es presentar una revisión exhaustiva de interés para investigadores y docentes que abordan el tema de la muerte en la educación. La clasificación de los trabajos analizados se concreta en las siguientes categorías: a) Trabajos realizados en la normalización de la muerte en la educación; y b) Trabajos centrados en la intervención educativa paliativa o posterior a la pérdida significativa. En las conclusiones se reflexiona sobre las líneas de innovación e investigación prioritarias para normalizar la muerte en el ámbito educativo. Entre ellas destaca la posible aportación de la pedagogía de la muerte en la respuesta educativa a los grandes retos de la sociedad actual.

Although death and bereavement situations are an unavoidable reality that we all encounter at some point in our lives, we have not yet managed to fully address them from a pedagogical point of view. A complete education requires treatment of all the matters that affect our condition as human beings; our finite state is an area we must deepen to achieve comprehensive growth and development on both a personal and social level. Recent studies strive to investigate this phenomenon in order to approach it from different educational contexts. This article aims to reflect upon the theme of death and the positive overcoming of situations of mourning, providing a proposal for the Education of Death in which stories are used as a teaching resource. The use of stories as educational material is based on their potential for reflection, increasing our confidence and understanding of the phenomenon of death as another process of life. For this we propose a didactic approach that collects stories that deal with different aspects of this theme, accompanied by teaching materials to deepen and enrich understanding and learning. Finally, the conclusions highlight the importance of introducing the Pedagogy of Death in education, while stressing the possibilities of storytelling as an educational resource to address it.
