An unprecedented Cu(I)-catalyzed asymmetric [6 + 3] cycloaddition of tropone with azomethine ylides was reported, which performs well over a broad scope of substrates and offers a unique and facile access to the synthetically useful bridged azabicyclo[4.3.1]decadiene derivatives in good yields with high levels of diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities under mild conditions.

Metal-Catalyzed [6 + 3] Cycloaddition of Tropone with Azomethine Ylides: A Practical Access to Piperidine-Fused Bicyclic Heterocycles

The first metal-catalyzed [6 + 3] cycloaddition of tropone with azomethine ylides has been developed. With the use of a chiral ferrocenylphosphine-copper(I) complex as the catalyst, the asymmetric variant of the [6 + 3] cycloaddition has also been successfully achieved. The reactions proceeded smoothly under mild conditions, affording piperidine-fused bicyclic heterocycles in moderate to high yields with good to excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivies. The procedures are operationally simple and the catalysts are cheap and readily accessible, thus providing a practical approach to piperidine-fused bicyclic heterocycles.

A variety of cycloheptapyrane derivatives were prepared via Ni-catalyzed formal [8+3] cycloaddition of tropones with 1,1-cyclopropanediesters. The asymmetric version of the process can be achieved using either an enantiomerically enriched cyclopropane as the starting material or a racemic cyclopropane and a chiral Lewis acid.

High-Pressure Kinetics of the (6+4)π Cycloaddition of Tropone with 2,3-Dimethyl-1,3-butadiene, an Acyclic Diene. The Temperature and Solvent Effects

Abstract By a high-pressure kinetic analysis in isopropylbenzene, 1,4-dioxane and N,N-dimethylformamide, the activation parameters for the (6+4)π cycloaddition reaction of tropone with 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene were determined. The findings support the concerted nature for the Woodward–Hoffmann rule-allowed thermal addition reaction of tropone. A secondary orbital interaction, which was used to predict the correct stereochemistry of the adducts, exerted no effect on the volume profile.

KINETIC STUDIES ON THE HIGH-PRESSURE DIELS–ALDER REACTION OF TROPONE WITH MALEIC ANHYDRIDE

Abstract The rates and activation parameters of the (4+2)π cycloaddition of tropone with maleic anhydride were measured in the range of 105–135 °C at pressures up to 2000 bar in cumene and in DMF. The values of activation volume and the volume change of reaction revealed a deviation to a great extent from those of (6+4)π process of tropone with cyclopentadiene, but to a small extent from the other (4+2)π process.
