ABSTRACT An unknown filamentous cyanobacterium was isolated from the Yuqiao Reservoir, a eutrophic drinking water reservoir in Tianjin city, northern China. The cyanobacterium shares some morphological similarities with most Leptolyngbya-like species, having thin trichomes that can facultatively produce sheaths, with one trichome per sheath, and contain peripheral thylakoids. Based on a combination of morphological, molecular, ultrastructural and ecological evidence, we propose the description of a new cyanobacterial taxon, Cyanoleptonema yuqiaoensis gen. & sp. nov. which expands our understanding of cyanobacterial diversity. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences placed this freshwater strain into a well-supported clade closely related to the marine or saline genera Sodalinema and Baaleninema. Genetic identity between Cyanoleptonema and other cyanobacteria, including Sodalinema and Baaleninema, was found to be less than 95% in 16S rRNA. The genus was further distinguished by morphological and ecological characteristics, including cell size and the ratio between cell length and width.
