The challenges of defining hormesis in epidemiological studies: The case of radiation hormesis

In the current radiation protection system, preventive measures and occupational exposure limits for controlling occupational exposure to ionizing radiation are based on the linear no-threshold extrapolation model. However, currently an increasing body of evidence indicates that this paradigm predicts very poorly biological responses in the low-dose exposure region. In addition, several in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated the presence of hormetic dose response curves correlated to ionizing radiation low exposure. In this regard, it is noteworthy that also the findings of different epidemiological studies, conducted in different categories of occupationally exposed workers (e.g., healthcare, nuclear industrial and aircrew workers), observed lower rates of mortality and/or morbidity from cancer and/or other diseases in exposed workers than in unexposed ones or in the general population, then suggesting the possible occurrence of hormesis. Nevertheless, these results should be considered with caution since the identification of hormetic response in epidemiological studies is rather challenging because of a number of major limitations. In this regard, some of the most remarkable shortcomings found in epidemiological studies performed in workers exposed to ionizing radiation are represented by lack or inadequate definition of exposure doses, use of surrogates of exposure, narrow dose ranges, lack of proper control groups and poor evaluation of confounding factors. Therefore, considering the valuable role and contribution that epidemiological studies might provide to the complex risk assessment and management process, there is a clear and urgent need to overcome the aforementioned limits in order to achieve an adequate, useful and more real-life risk assessment that should also include the key concept of hormesis. Thus, in the present conceptual article we also discuss and provide possible approaches to improve the capacity of epidemiological studies to identify/define the hormetic response and consequently improve the complex process of risk assessment of ionizing radiation at low exposure doses.

Benchmark dose estimation for benzene-exposed workers in China: Based on quantitative and multi-endpoint genotoxicity assessments

Based on previous exposure studies, benzene (BZ) has been classified as a human carcinogen and occupational exposure limit (OELs) for BZ has been set to be about 1 ppm around the world. However, health hazards have still been reported with exposure below the OEL. Thus, the OEL needs to be updated to reduce health risk. The overall aim of our study was therefore to generate new OEL for BZ via a benchmark dose (BMD) approach and based on quantitative and multi-endpoint genotoxicity assessments. Genotoxicities were determined using the novel human PIG-A gene mutation assay, the micronucleus (MN) test and the COMET assay in benzene-exposed workers. Among the 104 workers with below current OELs, they exhibited significantly higher PIG-A mutant frequencies (MFs) (15.96 ± 14.41 × 10−6) and MN frequencies (11.55 ± 6.83‰) than those among the controls (PIG-A MFs: 5.46 ± 4.56 × 10−6, MN frequencies: 4.51 ± 1.58 ‰), but no difference in the COMET assay. A significant association was also observed between BZ exposure doses and PIG-A MFs and MN frequencies (P < 0.001). Our results indicate that health hazards were induced among workers with below OEL exposures. Based on results from the PIG-A and MN assays, the lower confidence limit of the BMD (BMDL) were calculated to be 8.71 mg/m3-year and 0.44 mg/m3-year, respectively. Based on these calculations, the OEL for BZ was determined to be lower than 0.07 ppm. This value can be considered by regulatory agencies to set new exposure limits and to better protect workers.

Cumulative Radiation Dose from Medical Imaging in Children with Congenital Heart Disease: A Systematic Review

Children with congenital heart disease are exposed to repeated medical imaging throughout their lifetime. Although the imaging contributes to their care and treatment, exposure to ionising radiation is known to increase one's lifetime attributable risk of malignancy. A systematic search of multiple databases was performed. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to all relevant papers and seven were deemed acceptable for quality assessment and risk of bias assessment. The cumulative effective dose (CED) varied widely across the patient cohorts, ranging from 0.96 mSv to 53.5 mSv. However, it was evident across many of the included studies that a significant number of patients were exposed to a CED >20 mSv, the current annual occupational exposure limit. Many factors affected the dose which patients received, including age and clinical demographics. The imaging modality which contributed the most radiation dose to patients was cardiology interventional procedures. Paediatric patients with congenital heart disease are at an increased risk of receiving an elevated cumulative radiation dose across their lifetime. Further research should focus on identifying risk factors for receiving higher radiation doses, keeping track of doses, and dose optimisation where possible.

Chemical characterization of combustion engine exhaust and assessment of helicopter deck operator occupational exposures on an offshore frigate class ship

Diesel engine exhaust (DE) consists of a complex mixture of gases and aerosols, originating from sources such as engines, turbines, and power generators. It is composed of a wide range of toxic compounds ranging from constituents that are irritating to those that are carcinogenic. The purposes of this work were to characterize DE originating from different engine types on a ship operating offshore and to quantify the potential exposure of workers on the ship’s helicopter deck to select DE compounds. Sampling was conducted on a Norwegian Nansen-class frigate that included helicopter operations. Frigate engines and generators were fueled by marine diesel oil, while the helicopter engine was fueled by high flash point kerosene-type aviation fuel. Exhaust samples were collected directly from the stack of the diesel engine and one of the diesel generator exhaust stacks, inside a gas turbine exhaust stack, and at the exhaust outlet of the helicopter. To characterize the different exhaust sources, non-targeted screening of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds was performed for multiple chemical classes. Some of the compounds detected at the sources are known irritants, such as phthalic anhydride, 2,5-dyphenyl-p-benzoquinone, styrene, cinnoline, and phenyl maleic anhydride. The exhaust from the diesel engine and diesel generator was found to contain the highest amounts of particulate matter and gaseous compounds, while the gas turbine had the lowest emissions. Personal exposure samples were collected outdoors in the breathing zone of a helicopter deck operator over nine working shifts, simultaneously with stationary measurements on the helicopter deck. Elemental carbon, nitrogen dioxide, and several volatile organic compounds are known to be present in DE, such as formaldehyde, acrolein, and phenol were specifically targeted. Measured DE exposures of the crew on the helicopter deck were variable, but less than the current European occupational exposure limits for all compounds, except elemental carbon, in which concentration varied between 0.5 and 37 µg/m3 over nine work shifts. These findings are among the first published for this type of working environment.

Occupational Exposure of Hairdressers to Airborne Hazardous Chemicals: A Scoping Review.

Introduction: Exposure to hazardous chemicals released during hairdressing activities from hair care products puts hairdressers at risk of adverse health effects. Safety assessments of hair products are mainly focused on consumers, but exposure for professional hairdressers might be substantially higher. Objective: To identify and assess available research data on inhalation exposures of professional hairdressers. Methods: A systematic search of studies between 1 January 2000 and 30 April 2021 was performed in Medline, Embase, Web of Science and in Cochrane registry, toxicological dossiers of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) of the European Commission as well as the German MAK Commission. Studies reporting quantitative data on airborne concentrations of chemicals in the hairdresser’s workplace were considered. The outcome was an airborne concentration of chemicals in the working environment, which was compared, when possible, with current occupational exposure limits (OEL) or guidance levels. Results: In total, 23 studies performed in 14 countries were included. The average number of hairdressing salons per study was 22 (range 1–62). Chemicals most frequently measured were formaldehyde (n = 8), ammonia (n = 5), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) (n = 5), and toluene (n = 4). More than fifty other chemicals were measured in one to three studies, including various aromatic and aliphatic organic solvents, hydrogen peroxide, persulfate, and particulate matter. Most studies reported environmental air concentrations, while personal exposure was measured only in seven studies. The measured air concentrations of formaldehyde, ammonia, and TVOC exceeded OEL or guidance values in some studies. There was large variability in measuring conditions and reported air concentrations differed strongly within and between studies. Conclusion: Hairdressers are exposed to a wide spectrum of hazardous chemicals, often simultaneously. Airborne concentrations of pollutants depend on salon characteristics such as ventilation and the number of customers but also on used products that are often country- or client-specific. For exposure to formaldehyde, ammonia, and TVOC exceeding OELs or guidance values for indoor air was observed. Therefore, occupational exposure should be taken into account by safety regulations for hair care products.

Meta-analysis of the effect of low-level occupational benzene exposure on human peripheral blood leukocyte counts in China

To investigate the effect of low-level occupational benzene exposure on human peripheral blood leukocyte counts of the workers, domestic and foreign published research data on the change of human peripheral blood leukocyte counts under low-level occupational benzene exposure from January 1990 to December 2020 were collected and analyzed. According to the literature inclusion and exclusion criteria, 18 independent studies from 12 publications were selected for meta-analysis to explore the effect of low-level occupational benzene exposure on human peripheral blood leukocyte counts. The results showed that the peripheral blood leukocyte counts abnormal rates of low-level occupational benzene exposure group were higher than those of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant. Low-level occupational benzene exposure could result in a relatively higher abnormal rate of peripheral blood leukocyte counts in the exposed population, indicating that low-level occupational benzene exposure at workplaces specified by the current benzene occupational exposure limit in China would affect the peripheral blood leukocyte counts of the workers, thus benzene with concentrations under the limit in the ambient air of workplace could be still harmful to the health of the exposed workers. The results of this study could provide a scientific basis for future revision of the benzene occupational exposure limit in China, and could also be a reference for the formulation of environmental standard concerning benzene in China in the future.

How to Reduce the Exposure of Welders to an Acceptable Level: Results of the InterWeld Study.

Workplace measurements in the past have shown that the applicable occupational exposure limits (OELs) are regularly exceeded in practice when high-emission welding processes are applied. The InterWeld pilot study was planned as part of an intervention study to show under which conditions compliance with the OEL is achievable in gas metal arc welding (GMAW) with solid wire. The investigation focussed on local exhaust ventilation, i.e. captor hoods and welding torches with integrated fume extraction. Forty tests with hand-guided GMAW were configured by experts with regard to all technical parameters and carried out by a professional welder. Effects of protective measures and process parameters on the exposure to respirable welding fumes and airborne manganese (Mn), chromium, nickel, and hexavalent chromium were investigated. Personal sampling was carried out in the welder's breathing zone outside the face shield at high flow rates (10 l min-1) in order to achieve sufficient filter loading. Particle masses and welding fume concentrations were determined by weighing the sampling filters. Metal concentrations were analysed by inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry. In order to evaluate the effects on exposure, the measurements were performed under similar conditions. The data were analysed descriptively and with mixed linear models. For measurements below the limit of detection, the exposure level was estimated using multiple imputation. Two to five times higher exposures to respirable welding fumes and airborne metals were observed during welding of 10 mm sheets than during welding of 2- or 3-mm sheets. Welding fume and Mn exposure were reduced by 70 and 90% when on-torch extraction or a captor hood was applied. Other airborne metals were reduced to a similar extent. Modifications on welding parameters led to a reduction of exposure against respirable particles by 51 up to 54%. Although proper extraction at the point of origin and lower-emitting process variants ensure a drastic reduction in exposure, compliance with current OELs is not guaranteed. In order to ensure adequate health protection, especially at workplaces where thick sheets with long relative arc times are processed, there is a need for technical development.

Toxicokinetics and systematic responses of differently sized indium tin oxide (ITO) particles in mice via oropharyngeal aspiration exposure

Indium tin oxide (ITO) is an important semiconductor material, because of increasing commercial products consumption and potentially exposed workers worldwide. So, urgently we need to assess and manage potential health risks of ITO. Although the Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) has been established for ITO exposure, there is still a lack of distinguishing the risks of exposure to particles of different sizes. Therefore, obtaining toxicological data of small-sized particles will help to improve its risk assessment data. Important questions raised in quantitative risk assessments for ITO particles are whether biodistribution of ITO particles is affected by particle size and to what extent systematic adverse responses is subsequently initiated. In order to determine whether this toxicological paradigm for size is relevant in ITO toxic effect, we performed comparative studies on the toxicokinetics and sub-acute toxicity test of ITO in mice. The results indicate both sized-ITO resided in the lung tissue and slowly excreted from the mice, and the smaller size of ITO being cleared more slowly. Only a little ITO was transferred to other organs, especially with higher blood flow. Two type of ITO which deposit in the lung mainly impacts respiratory system and may injure liver or kidney. After sub-acute exposure to ITO, inflammation featured by neutrophils infiltration and fibrosis with both dose and size effects have been observed. Our findings revealed toxicokinetics and dose-dependent pulmonary toxicity in mice via oropharyngeal aspiration exposure, also replenish in vivo risk assessment of ITO. Collectively, these data indicate that under the current OEL, there are potential toxic effects after exposure to the ITO particles. The observed size-dependent biodistribution patterns and toxic effect might be important for approaching the hazard potential of small-sized ITO in an occupational environment.

Assessment of Occupational Exposure to Indium Dust for Indium-Tin-Oxide Manufacturing Workers.

According to recent research, indium nanoparticles (NPs) are more toxic than micro-sized particles. While cases of indium lung disease have been reported worldwide, very little research has been conducted on the occupational exposure to indium NPs. Recently, an indium-related lung disease was reported in Korea, a global powerhouse for display manufacturing. In this study, we conducted an assessment ofoccupational exposure at an indium tin oxide (ITO) powder manufacturing plant, where the first case of indium lung disease in Korea occurred. Airborne dustwas obtained from a worker’s breathing zone, and area sampling in the workplace environment was conducted using real-time monitoring devices. Personal samples were analyzed for the indium concentrations in total dust, respirable dust fraction, and NPs using personal NPs respiratory deposition samplers. The total indium concentration of the personal samples was lower than the threshold limit value recommended by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH TLV), which was set as occupational exposure limit (OEL). However, the respirable indium concentration exceeded the recently set ACGIH TLV for the respirable fraction of indium dust. The concentration of indium NPs ranged between 0.003 and 0.010 × 10−2 mg/m3, accounting for only 0.4% of the total and 2.7% of the respirable indium particles. This was attributed to the aggregating of NPs at the µm sub-level. Given the extremely low fraction of indium NPs in the total and respirable dust, the current OEL values, set as the total and respirable indium concentrations, do not holistically represent the occupational exposure to indium NPs or prevent health hazards. Therefore, it is necessary to set separate OEL values for indium NPs. This study covers only the process of handling ITO powder. Therefore, follow-up studies need to be conducted on other ITO sputtering target polishing and milling processes, which typically generate more airborne NPs, to further investigate the effects of indium on workers and facilitate the necessary implementation of indium-reducing technologies.

Probabilistic pharmacokinetic modeling of airborne lead corresponding to toxicologically relevant blood lead levels in workers

The Department of Defense (DOD) commissioned the National Research Council (NRC) to assess the potential health effects associated with exposure of DOD personnel to lead (Pb) at firing ranges. In that report, NRC concluded that the current Occupational Safety and Health Administration permissible exposure limit and the blood lead levels (BLLs) on which it was based were not sufficiently protective of worker populations covered under the general industry standard. In support of future selection of an occupational exposure limit, the relationship of airborne Pb levels to BLLs is of interest to the DOD. A subset of the BLLs identified as relevant to the management of health risks of exposed workers was selected as targets for extrapolation to equivalent airborne Pb values. The existing O'Flaherty physiologically based pharmacokinetic model for Pb in humans was modified to facilitate probabilistic predictions of DOD worker population BLLs, including 95th percentile values, based on current worker characteristics. Workplace airborne Pb 8-h time-weighted average concentrations of 1.1, 4.0, 6.8, or 9.8 μg/m3 are anticipated to maintain BLLs below 5, 10, 15, or 20 μg/dl, respectively, in the vast majority of DOD workers exposed to Pb under full-time working lifetime occupational exposure.

Relationship between personal-sampled air lead and blood lead in low-lead-exposure workers in Japan to apply multiple regression models determining permissible air lead concentration.

ObjectivesWe investigated the relationship between lead in air (Pb‐A) measured by personal sampling and blood lead (Pb‐B) in workers with relatively low lead exposure to estimate the permissible air concentration of lead corresponding to the biological tolerance value of Pb‐B of 15 µg/dL.MethodsWe collected air samples at a lead‐acid battery factory in Japan by personal sampling devices attached to 32 workers (19 males and 13 females) and measured Pb‐A by a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer in 2017‐2020. In addition, we collected information on age, smoking habits, Pb‐B, and urinary δ‐aminolevulinic acid from the records of medical examinations for lead poisoning. Samples were collected two times from four workers, resulting in 36 data sets.ResultsBefore analyses, we excluded four inappropriate data sets. The levels of Pb‐A in the factory and Pb‐B in the workers were almost under the current permissible limits. Multiple regression models showed significant correlations between Pb‐B and Pb‐A, and sex, and borderline significance between Pb‐B and age. Based on them, we calculated Pb‐A corresponding to Pb‐B 15 μg/dL, and obtained similar values to the current occupational exposure limit (OEL) of 30 μg/m3, with slight variation between sex and age.ConclusionThese results validate OEL, although supplementary conditions in terms of sex and age may be necessary.

Benchmark dose estimation for coke oven emissions based on oxidative damage in Chinese exposed workers

Coke oven emissions (COEs) can cause oxidative stress of the body, which in turn induces the occupational lung disease and also increases the risk of other diseases. COEs are the major occupational hazard factors for coke oven workers. The aim of the study is to explore the influences of COEs exposure on oxidative damage and estimate the benchmark dose (BMD) of COEs. A group of 542 workers exposed to COEs and 237 healthy controls from the same city were recruited in this study. The corresponding measuring kits were used to determine the plasma biomarkers of oxidative damage level. Generalized linear models and trend tests were used to analyze the relationship between COEs exposure and biomarkers. EPA Benchmark Dose Software was performed to calculate BMD and the lower confidence limit of the benchmark dose (BMDL) of COEs exposure. The results showed the significant dose-response relationship was observed between COEs exposure and oxidative damage with T-AOC as a biomarker. The BMD of COEs exposure were 2.83 mg/m3 and 1.39 mg/m3 in males and females, respectively, and the corresponding BMDL were 1.47 mg/m3 and 0.75 mg/m3 in males and females, respectively. Our results suggested the exposure level of COEs below the current national occupational exposure limits (OELs) would induce oxidative damage, and the OEL of COEs based on the T-AOC damage was suggested at 0.03 mg/m3 in this study.Keywords: Coke oven emissions, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, oxidative damage, plasma total antioxidant capacity, benchmark dose, occupational exposure limits

The effects of carbon dioxide exposure concentrations on human vigilance and sentiment in an enclosed workplace environment

In this study, fifteen participants were exposed to different carbon dioxide (CO2 ) concentrations in an enclosed environmental chamber to investigate the potential effects of elevated CO2 concentrations on human vigilance and sentiment. The psychomotor vigilance test (PVT), the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) were measured before and after each 4-hour CO2 exposure session. The statistical analyses of the PVT performance metrics showed that the human vigilance decreased significantly with the elevated CO2 concentration from 1500ppm to above 3500ppm, but no significant change was observed in the KSS score. Moreover, although the participants reported less positive and more negative emotions as the CO2 exposure concentration increased, the effect of CO2 concentration on human sentiment was not potent. In sum, the findings suggested a detrimental effect of CO2 exposure concentration on human vigilance at the CO2 concentration of 3500ppm, which is below the current occupational exposure limit of 5000ppm. It is worth noting that the order of CO2 exposures was not balanced among the participants, which remains a major limitation of this study.

Creation of a database of occupational and environmental concentrations of crystalline silica dust for the purpose of assessing past and current exposures.

«Creation of a database of occupational and environmental concentrations of crystalline silica dust for the purpose of assessing past and current exposures».Background:Professional exposure to respirable dust containing crystalline silica is of great interest for the serious lung diseases resulting from exposure.Methods:During the period 1986-2019, 3611 exposure data to crystalline silica were collected from companies in central Italy. The data were divided and statistically analyzed based on the sampling system (Cyclone Dorr Oliver, CIP 10-R, Cyclone GS3, SKC plastic selector, Cyclone Higgins-Dewell and Cyclone Lippmann) and the ATECO code (code of economic activity, Italian acronym, used to classify companies when they interface with public institutions) of the companies in which they were collected. For each ATECO code, the division was made according to the type of sampling (personal or static) and the descriptive statistics of the data were calculated.Results:Overall, for personal samples, 8.8% of the data exceeds 0.1 mg/m3, 19.6% exceeds 0.05 mg/m3 and 33.8% exceeds 0.025 mg/m3, the limit values set by the EU Directive 2019/130, suggested by the SCOEL and published by ACGIH respectively. The ATECO codes with the highest worker exposure (geometric means 0.067 and 0.069 mg/m3) were 23.31.00 (manufacture of ceramic tiles for floors and walls) and 23.42.00 (manufacture of ceramic sanitary ware), while the lowest exposure is found in 81.29.91 (cleaning and washing of public areas, removal of snow and ice including shedding of sand) with a geometric mean of 0.002 mg/m3.Discussion:Despite the general reduction over time, there are still many sectors in which data are higher than the current occupational exposure limits; especially in these sectors it is necessary to implement the measures to fully assess worker exposure.

Occupational exposure during treatment of offshore drilling waste and characterization of microbiological diversity

The exposure for workers handling and recycling offshore drilling waste are previously not described, and given the potential for exposure to hazardous components, there is a need for characterizing this occupational exposure. In this study five plants recycling offshore drilling waste with different techniques were included. Measurements were conducted in both winter and summer to include seasonal exposure variations. Altogether >200 personal air-exposure measurements for oil mist, oil vapor, volatile organic compounds (VOC), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and solvents were carried out respectively. Microorganisms related to drilling waste were identified in bulk samples and in stationary air measurements from two of the plants. The exposure to oil mist and oil vapor were below 10% of the current Norwegian occupational exposure limits (OEL) for all measured components. The plants using the Resoil or TCC method had a statistically significant higher exposure to oil vapor than the plant using complete combustion (p-value <0.05). No statistically significant difference was found between the different treatment methods for oil mist. The exposure to solvents was generally low (additive factor < 0.03). Endotoxin measurements done during winter showed a median concentration of 5.4 endotoxin units (EU)/m3. Levels of H2S above the odor threshold of 0.1 ppm were measured at four plants. Both drill mud and slop water contained a high number and diversity of bacteria (2-4 × 104 colony forming unit (CFU)/mL), where a large fraction was Gram-negative species. Some of the identified microorganisms are classified as potentially infectious pathogens for humans and thus might be a hazard to workers.

Power Stripping of Asbestos-Containing Insulation from Electrical Cable

Efforts to recycle copper from electrical conductors have led to the development of specialized machines, which automatically remove insulating covers from wires and cable products. In the past, certain wire and cable products were insulated using chrysotile asbestos. This research was undertaken to determine the asbestos fiber exposure risks associated with power stripping machinery to remove asbestos-containing insulation materials from electrical wire or cable. A Rigby Machinery, Inc., Model 4H electric powered wire/cable insulation stripping machine was acquired along with approximately 42 m of asbestos insulated cable. During two separate, but nearly identical, test sessions, a laborer used the wire stripper to remove the asbestos-containing insulation from the subject cable. This work took place within a closed metal building with a total interior volume of 2500 m3. Industrial hygiene personal and area air samples were collected for airborne fibers throughout all wire stripping periods. Collected air samples were analyzed using phase contract microscopy (PCM) and transmission microscopy (TEM). The results of analysis using PCM for personal samples (n = 3) taken during periods of continuous cable stripping activity showed test period airborne fiber exposures ranging from 0.034 to 0.068 (mean 0.056 f/cc). Follow-up analysis of these personal samples using TEM indicated asbestos adjusted PCM exposures ranging from 0.017 to 0.045 (mean 0.033 f/cc). Area air samples taken at distances ranging from 2 to 9 meters from the wire stripper (n = 16) showed asbestos adjusted PCM concentrations ranging from less than 0.0001 to 0.041 f/cc (mean 0.007 f/cc). The process of power stripping asbestos-containing insulation from electrical wires and cables can cause exposure to airborne asbestos fibers. However, the levels of such exposure are not expected to exceed the current occupational exposure limits for asbestos of 0.1 f/cc as an 8-hr TWA or 1.0 f/cc averaged over a 30-minute exposure period.

Ionic Liquid‐based Microchannels for Highly Sensitive and Fast Amperometric Detection of Toxic Gases

AbstractIonic liquid (IL)‐based microchannels sensors have been fabricated and employed for the detection of toxic ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) gases, with enhanced sensitivity and response times compared to conventional electrodes. Electrochemical techniques were employed to understand the behaviour of these highly toxic gases in two ionic liquids, [C4mpyrr][NTf2] and [C2mim][NTf2], on a gold modified microchannels electrode. The limits of detection (LODs) obtained in [C4mpyrr][NTf2] for NH3 (3.7 ppm) and in [C2mim][NTf2] for HCl (3.6 ppm) were lower than the current Occupational Safety and Health Administration Permissible Exposure Limit (OSHA PEL) for the two gases (25 ppm for NH3 and 5 ppm for HCl). The response time of the sensor is 15 s with a sensitivity of 143 nA ppm−1 and 14 nA ppm−1 for HCl and NH3, respectively. These results demonstrate the superiority of IL‐based microchannels sensors for detecting toxic gases, when compared to commercially available sensors or traditional IL‐based sensor designs, where high sensitivity or fast response time is still a challenge.
