Predicted Multi-Chronic Disease by Supervised Machine Learning Algorithms: Performance and Evaluation

Current environmental conditions and human lifestyles have resulted in the emergence of numerous diseases. The medical field generates an enormous amount of new data each year for remote monitoring of patients. Due to increased data growth in the medical and healthcare industries, accurate medical data analysis has been advantageous to early patient care. However, physicians often face challenges in accurately diagnosing diseases in patients far from hospitals. Therefore, utilizing remote patient systems (telemedicine systems) due to the complexities associated with their chronic conditions. On the other hand, predicting illness is also a challenging task. Thus, data extracted from heterogeneous, fast-flowing, and reliable sources is crucial for decision-making and disease prediction. This research paper aims to utilize supervised Machine Learning (ML) techniques to predict chronic diseases such as heart and hypertension based on the patient’s features or symptoms by analyzing patient data collected by sensors and sources enabled by the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). Supervised ML technology in Hadoop and Spark environments is employed to guarantee that this classification accurately identifies individuals with chronic illnesses. The methods are evaluated using 55,680 patient records to discover the proper match between the data set and the final disease-predicted result. The results demonstrate that the proposed procedure employing the Decision Tree (DT) algorithm is 94% accurate, and DT outperforms the other four ML algorithms. This includes the Support Vector Machine (SVM), a Naive Bayes (NB) model, Random Forest (RF), and Logistic Regression (LR) in terms of both performance and accuracy metrics (precision, recall, and F-score).

Challenges in Restoring Mediterranean Seagrass Ecosystems in the Anthropocene

The intense human pressures in the Anthropocene epoch are causing an alarming decline in marine coastal ecosystems and an unprecedented loss of biodiversity. This situation underscores the urgency of making ecological restoration a global priority to recover degraded ecosystems. Meadows of the endemic Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica have lost more than half of their original extent in the last century, necessitating immediate conservation and management measures, supported by active restoration interventions. This paper explores new opportunities and provides specific recommendations to enhance restoration as a fundamental strategy for reversing the decline of P. oceanica ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea. When a return to a historical pristine reference condition may not be feasible in the short term or desirable given current environmental conditions and uncertainty, transplanting the tolerant and fast-growing seagrass species Cymodocea nodosa could facilitate natural recolonization. This would occur through secondary ecological succession, benefiting the sensitive and slow-growing species P. oceanica. Future global and local efforts should primarily focus on proactive management to prevent further alterations by planning appropriate conservation measures in a timely manner to mitigate and reverse global changes. As a secondary step, restoration programs can be implemented with a focus on ‘target-oriented’ rather than ‘reference-oriented’ conditions, aiming to establish ecosystems capable of sustaining the future rather than replicating the historical environment.

MedGermDB: A seed germination database for characteristic species of Mediterranean habitats

AbstractSeed germination is a crucial phase of plant responses in early life to current and future environmental conditions. However, germination data are still scarce or disaggregated for many plant lineages and regions, including global biodiversity hotspots such as the Mediterranean Basin. We present MedGermDB, the first germination database for characteristic species of Mediterranean habitats, as defined by the EUNIS classification. We also present a systematic approach to build germination databases using automatic and semi‐automatic data extraction from the literature. MedGermDB contains germination data for 4680 laboratory tests performed with 236 angiosperm species from 43 families, extracted from 125 literature sources (2837 sources screened). Each test is associated to a seed lot (i.e., a seed collection of a plant species obtained from a specific location at a specific time) and its metadata, recording geographical information and experimental conditions (storage, dormancy‐breaking treatments, incubation temperature, and photoperiod). MedGermDB is available as a csv file, and through a web app: https://dianamariacruztejada.shinyapps.io/medgermdb/. MedGermDB can be used to explore eco‐evolutionary questions and provides a backbone data set for informing effective seed‐based conservation and ecological restoration activities targeting EUNIS habitats. Our methodological approach to data extraction can be extended to other study systems, contributing to global efforts to mobilize germination data.

Polygenic architecture of flowering time and its relationship with local environments in the grass Brachypodium distachyon.

Synchronizing the timing of reproduction with the environment is crucial in the wild. Among the multiple mechanisms, annual plants evolved to sense their environment, the requirement of cold-mediated vernalization is a major process that prevents individuals from flowering during winter. In many annual plants including crops, both a long and short vernalization requirement can be observed within species, resulting in so-called early-(spring) and late-(winter) flowering genotypes. Here, using the grass model Brachypodium distachyon, we explored the link between flowering-time-related traits (vernalization requirement and flowering time), environmental variation, and diversity at flowering-time genes by combining measurements under greenhouse and outdoor conditions. These experiments confirmed that B. distachyon natural accessions display large differences regarding vernalization requirements and ultimately flowering time. We underline significant, albeit quantitative effects of current environmental conditions on flowering-time-related traits. While disentangling the confounding effects of population structure on flowering-time-related traits remains challenging, population genomics analyses indicate that well-characterized flowering-time genes may contribute significantly to flowering-time variation and display signs of polygenic selection. Flowering-time genes, however, do not colocalize with genome-wide association peaks obtained with outdoor measurements, suggesting that additional genetic factors contribute to flowering-time variation in the wild. Altogether, our study fosters our understanding of the polygenic architecture of flowering time in a natural grass system and opens new avenues of research to investigate the gene-by-environment interaction at play for this trait.

Mapping the habitat refugia of Isidella elongata under climate change and trawling impacts to preserve Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems in the Mediterranean

The bamboo-coral Isidella elongata is a key habitat-forming species in the deep Mediterranean Sea. This alcyonacean is listed as an indicator of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) and as Critically Endangered due to bottom trawling impacts. In this work, a modeling approach was used to predict and map the habitat suitability of I. elongata in the Mediterranean Sea under current environmental conditions. Occurrence data were modeled as a function of environmental parameters. Using climate change scenarios and fishing effort data, the risk of climate change and fisheries impacts on habitat suitability were estimated, and climate refugia were identified. A drastic loss of habitat is predicted, and climate change scenarios suggest a loss of 60% of suitable habitats by 2100. In the central Mediterranean, climate refugia overlapped with active fishing grounds. This study represents the first attempt to identify hot spots for the protection of soft bottom Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems for the entire Mediterranean Sea, and highlights areas most at risk from trawling. This work is relevant to the objectives of the EU Marine Strategy Framework and Maritime Spatial Planning Directives, the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 regarding priority areas for conservation.

Conditioned preferences: Gated by experience, context, and endocrine systems

Central to the navigation of an ever-changing environment is the ability to form positive associations with places and conspecifics. The functions of location and social conditioned preferences are often studied independently, limiting our understanding of their interplay. Furthermore, a de-emphasis on natural functions of conditioned preferences has led to neurobiological interpretations separated from ecological context. By adopting a naturalistic and ethological perspective, we uncover complexities underlying the expression of conditioned preferences. Development of conditioned preferences is a combination of motivation, reward, associative learning, and context, including for social and spatial environments. Both social- and location-dependent reward-responsive behaviors and their conditioning rely on internal state-gating mechanisms that include neuroendocrine and hormone systems such as opioids, dopamine, testosterone, estradiol, and oxytocin. Such reinforced behavior emerges from mechanisms integrating past experience and current social and environmental conditions. Moreover, social context, environmental stimuli, and internal state gate and modulate motivation and learning via associative reward, shaping the conditioning process. We highlight research incorporating these concepts, focusing on the integration of social neuroendocrine mechanisms and behavioral conditioning. We explore three paradigms: 1) conditioned place preference, 2) conditioned social preference, and 3) social conditioned place preference. We highlight nonclassical species to emphasize the naturalistic applications of these conditioned preferences. To fully appreciate the complex integration of spatial and social information, future research must identify neural networks where endocrine systems exert influence on such behaviors. Such research promises to provide valuable insights into conditioned preferences within a broader naturalistic context.

Bet hedging in a unicellular microalga

Understanding how organisms have adapted to persist in unpredictable environments is a fundamental goal in biology. Bet hedging, an evolutionary adaptation observed from microbes to humans, facilitates reproduction and population persistence in randomly fluctuating environments. Despite its prevalence, empirical evidence in microalgae, crucial primary producers and carbon sinks, is lacking. Here, we report a bet-hedging strategy in the unicellular microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. We show that isogenic populations reversibly diversify into heterophenotypic mobile and non-mobile cells independently of environmental conditions, likely driven by stochastic gene expression. Mobile cells grow faster but are stress-sensitive, while non-mobile cells prioritise stress resistance over growth. This is due to shifts from growth-promoting activities (cell division, photosynthesis) to resilience-promoting processes (thickened cell wall, cell enlargement, aggregation, accumulation of antioxidant and energy-storing compounds). Our results provide empirical evidence for bet hedging in a microalga, indicating the potential for adaptation to current and future environmental conditions and consequently conservation of ecosystem functions.

Application of Kaizen and Kaizen Costing in SMEs

Abstract The research problem revolves around an attempt to answer the questions: “Are enterprises from the SME sector interested in implementing strategic management accounting instruments, including Kaizen Costing? Is Kaizen Costing more widely used in SMEs operating in Poland?" The aim of the article is therefore to highlight the importance of Kaizen and Kaizen Costing and to draw attention to how much support these solutions can be for SMEs in the current social, economic, and environmental conditions. The article presents the results of surveys conducted in this regard. The accomplishment of the established objective of the work required conducting a review of the literature on the subject and presenting conclusions from previous own research in the above respect. The method of participant observation, critical analysis and synthesis was used in the study. According to the research results, there is little interest in these instruments in large enterprises, however, in medium-sized enterprises, the interest and degree of application of Kaizen and Kaizen Costing is negligible. The research results indicate the need for further development and broadening the dialogue on the usability and benefits which enterprises, in particular SMEs, may derive from the introduction of such innovative solutions.

Wastewater originating from industry varies greatly depending on the type of industry. Industrial wastewater usually contains many toxic and dangerous chemical compounds (B3) and contains heavy metals. Heavy metals are pollutants that have dangerous effects because they cannot be broken down biologically and stable. Heavy metal elements can be distributed on the earth's surface in water, soil and air. Heavy metal waste pollution containing lead (Pb) is a problem for current environmental conditions. Heavy metals are found in almost all types of industrial waste. The increasing number of industries will cause increased pollution of water sources originating from industrial waste. . Therefore, effective and efficient methods are needed to manage lead-contaminated water. Methods that are easy to apply, low cost and environmentally friendly are highly desirable for managing lead-contaminated water so that the concept of good mining practice can be applied to sustainable development. The most efficient and effective method applied for mining waste management is the phytoremediation method. The results of the research state that several plants have a significant and efficient effect in helping the absorption of the metal lead (Pb) contained in water. Great Duckweed (Spirodela Polyrhiza) and Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) are plants that are suitable for implementing phytoremediation methods in managing water contaminated with lead (Pb).

LAMP: A latency-aware MAC protocol for joint scheduling of CAM and DENM traffic over 5G-NR sidelink

Cooperative Awareness Messages (CAMs) and Decentralized Environmental Notification Messages (DENMs) are two types of messages used in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication. CAMs are used to periodically exchange the current state of a vehicle with its nearby vehicles and the DENMs are used to aperiodically provide critical and time-sensitive information about current environmental conditions to other vehicles and infrastructure entities. While considerable research has been conducted on the efficient scheduling of CAM and DENM separately or at the network level coexistence, no work has been done to integrate the scheduling of both message types at the granularity of the per-vehicle level. The scheduling of CAM is commonly done through Semi-Persistent Scheduling (SPS). However, no equivalent scheduling algorithm has been developed for the aperiodic and variable-sized DENMs. As a result, there is a need for novel mechanisms that can efficiently prioritize and schedule mixed traffic of CAM and DENM messages. This paper introduces a Quality of Service (QoS) scheduler called LAMP for segregating traffic in the Radio Link Control (RLC) layer for joint sidelink scheduling of CAM and DENM at the vehicular level. The LAMP scheduler is aided with a special resource selection and reservation scheme for mixed traffic scenarios. The groundwork involves an experimental analysis in Network Simulator-3 (NS-3) that uses the New Radio (NR) Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) module in Mode-2. The simulation findings demonstrate that LAMP could significantly reduce the end-to-end latency of DENM by 89.36% and CAM by 40.2% while also increasing the packet reception rate by 12.1% and 9.74% for CAM and DENM with repetitions, respectively.

Effects of ultraviolet and photosynthetically active radiation on morphogenesis, antioxidants and photoprotective defense mechanism in a hot-spring cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. strain VKB02

The continuous increase in global temperature and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) causes profound impacts on the growth and physiology of photosynthetic microorganisms. The hot-spring cyanobacteria have a wide range of mitigation mechanisms to cope up against current unsustainable environmental conditions. In the present investigation, we have explored the indispensable mitigation strategies of an isolated hot-spring cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. strain VKB02 under simulated ultraviolet (UV-A, UV-B) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). The adaptive morphological changes were more significantly observed under PAB (PAR, UV-A, and UV-B) exposure as compared to P and PA (PAR and UV-A) irradiations. PAB exposure also exhibited a marked decline in pigment composition and photosynthetic efficiency by multi-fold increment of free radicals. To counteract the oxidative stress, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants defense were significantly enhanced many folds under PAB exposure as compared to the control. In addition, the cyanobacterium has also produced shinorine as a strong free radicals scavenger and excellent UV absorber for effective photoprotection against UV radiation. Therefore, the hot-spring cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. strain VKB02 has unique defense strategies for survival under prolonged lethal UVR conditions. This study will help in the understanding of environment-induced defense strategies and production of highly value-added green photo-protectants for commercial applications.

Health and Working Conditions of Delivery Workers in Ulsan, South Korea Article type

Objective: This study aimed to determine the current work environment and health conditions for delivery workers in Ulsan Metropolitan City.Methods: Data from 64 delivery workers were collected, including their sociodemographic and employment information, and their opinions on labor environment, health status, health check-ups, and national health services. Quantitative data were analyzed through frequency analysis to explore the results. Qualitative data, such as descriptive responses, were examined through a process of categorization and multi-frequency responses.Results: The primary risk exposure of delivery workers in workplace was vibration from machines, high temperatures enough to sweat even when not working, smoke, gas, dust, etc. (each at 50.0%). Physical threats during work included postures that caused fatigue or pain (76.6%) and direct interaction with people (76.6%). Challenges in welfare and support within the work environment included the lack of rest time or difficulty in utilizing it (60.9%), no regular mealtime (65.6%), and no provision of protective equipment by the company (57.8%). A total of 48.8% of delivery workers responded that there were health and safety risks in their work environment, and overall job satisfaction was low (59.4% expressed dissatisfaction). While the general health condition was good, there were numerous complaints of pain (79.7%). Specific health issues included upper limb muscle pain (70.3%), lower limb muscle pain (62.5%), and the most diagnosed disease was hyperlipidemia (23.4%). Over the past two years, 10.9% of the participants had not had health check-ups. 71.9% expressed their willingness to participate in health promotion services, followed by improvement in working conditions and the management of harmful substances, musculoskeletal disorders, and cardiovascular diseases.Conclusion: This study, by examining the health status of delivery workers in Ulsan Metropolitan City, provides valuable foundational data for improving their work environment and preventing occupational diseases among them.

Environmental flow assessment, evaluation, and suggestions for dying riverine ecosystem of the transboundary Amudarya River, Central Asia

The Amudarya River (ADR) is the largest source of freshwater in Central Asia providing livelihood to millions of people by extracting water for agriculture. However, the over-exploitation has created some critical environmental issues. For example, almost no water for the delta and the Aral Sea, which was once the 4th largest lake in the world. The present study focused on the assessment of environmental flow requirements (E-flows) in the basin. However, the main challenges in the accomplishment were the unavailability of natural streamflow, which is necessary for E-flow assessment, and sparse and limited hydroclimatic data. A hydrologic model was configured to simulate naturalized streamflow using the meteorological data from the Climate Research Unit. Four hydrological methods (i.e., Tennant, low flow index (7Q10), flow duration curve analysis (Q90, and Q95), and flow duration curve shifting (FDCS)) and all-method mean were applied to estimate E-flows at 34 sites on all tributaries of the ADR. According to FDCS, 7Q10, Q90, and Q95, E-flows should be 46%, 37%, 30%, and 25% of naturalized mean annual flow (NMAF), respectively, and on average, it should be 35% of NMAF, assessed by the all-methods mean. For low-flow (October–March) and high-flow (April–September) months, E-flows were determined to be 20–30% and 40–98% of NMAF, respectively. E-flow evaluation with the current environmental conditions showed very serious concerns because no sites met the environmental flow requirements below Kerki. This study will be guidelines to improve the riverine ecosystem and for future sustainable development in the region.

Prediction of ctenophore Beroe ovata Bruguiere, 1789 habitat expansion and control of invading Mnemiopsis leidyi Agassiz, 1865 in the Ponto-Caspian basin associated with climate change

The seas of Ponto-Caspian basin (Black, Azov and Caspian) are exposed to species invasions, including harmful ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi A. Agassiz, 1865 and its predator Beroe ovata Bruguière, 1789. Current environmental conditions of invasive ctenophores M. leidyi and B. ovata occurrence, development and variability in the Ponto-Caspian basin have been compiled, based on own field observations and published data. Analysis of climatological data on basic environmental parameters (water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll concentration) and modeling approach were used to predict favourable for both ctenophores conditions, and changes of those conditions, associated with the climate variations. The role of B. ovata as a bio-controller of M. leidyi population has been assessed. Several climate change scenarios have been considered in this study i.e., uniform increase/decrease of SST throughout the year by 2 °C and only spring temperatures increase/decrease by 2 °C. The most sensitive to increase in SST in terms of M. leidyi reproduction duration are the western coast of the Black Sea and the Southern and Middle Caspian. On the other hand, B. ovata reproduction duration is expected to increase in several areas, including the northern coast of the Black Sea and the Southern and Middle Caspian. The coastal areas of the Black Sea and the transitional regions between the Southern and Middle Caspian are exposed to an earlier start of M. leidyi reproduction during warmer springs. Regarding B. ovata, the whole Black Sea is vulnerable to spring SST changes, but in the Caspian Sea B. ovata extends its reproduction duration only in the Middle Caspian during warmer springs. Since B. ovata consumes mostly M. leidyi, it is an important biocontrolling agent of M. leidyi, harmless for the ecosystem.

Combining the resurrection approach with transplant experiments to investigate adaptation of plant populations to environmental change

Recent climatic changes, such as more frequent droughts and heatwaves, can lead to rapid evolutionary adaptations in plant populations. Such rapid evolution can be investigated using the resurrection approach by comparing plants raised from stored ancestral and contemporary seeds from the same population. This approach has so far only been used in common garden experiments, allowing to reveal genetic differentiation but not adaptation. In this study, we performed a novel approach by testing for evolutionary adaptation in natural plant populations using a resurrection study in combination with in situ transplantations. We cultivated seedlings from ancestors (23–26 years old) and contemporary descendants of three perennial species (Melica ciliata, Leontodon hispidus and Clinopodium vulgare) from calcareous grasslands in the greenhouse and transplanted them back to their collection sites. In addition, we sowed seeds of ancestors and descendants of two species (L. hispidus and C. vulgare) to the collection sites in order to investigate germination rates. In transplanted M. ciliata seedlings, we observed lower mortality and larger plant size in descendants compared to ancestors. This indicates that descendants are better adapted than ancestors to the current environmental conditions, which proved to be exceptionally hot and dry during the study period. Descendants of C. vulgare seedlings tended to be smaller and descendants of L. hispidus seedlings produced fewer leaves compared to their ancestors in their contemporary environmental conditions. In C. vulgare and L. hispidus, we found evolution towards faster germination, and especially descendant seeds of C. vulgare were better adapted to the unfavourable conditions during the experimental period. Concluding, we demonstrate that our novel approach to combine resurrection ecology with transplant experiments is a promising avenue to rigorously test for evolutionary adaptations in changing environments.

Development ofmarine biodiversity database (BISMaL) to enable estimations past habitat conditions formarine life inthe northwestern Pacific.

Global activities involving the collection of marine biodiversity information have provided a large amount of biological observation records that cover various spatiotemporal areas. To predict biological responses or distribution changes in response to environmental changes by using these observation records, it is essential to analyze not only the current marine physicochemical environmental conditions but also the past conditions when the organisms were observed. We developed a new function to estimate the past marine environmental conditions for the observation records in our marine biodiversity database (Biological Information System for Marine Life: BISMaL) and examine whether the database can reliably estimate thermal habitats for both benthic and planktonic marine organisms. For the benthic squat lobster Shinkaia crosnieri, the estimated and observed in situ temperatures were similar to each other. For the planktonic chaetognaths Krohnitta pacifica and K. subtilis, the estimated temperatures showed clear seasonal changes specific to their distribution areas. These results indicated that BISMaL can reliably provide past habitat conditions regardless of planktonic or benthic lifestyles. BISMaL, which provides both biological observations and estimated past environmental conditions through web services, could lower the barrier to data access and use and make data-driven science available not only for data scientists but also for various marine scientists, such as taxonomists, ecologists and field scientists. Spatial and seasonal variation in thermal sensitivity within North American bird species.

Responses of wildlife to climate change are typically quantified at the species level, but physiological evidence suggests significant intraspecific variation in thermal sensitivity given adaptation to local environments and plasticity required to adjust to seasonal environments. Spatial and temporal variation in thermal responses may carry important implications for climate change vulnerability; for instance, sensitivity to extreme weather may increase in specific regions or seasons. Here, we leverage high-resolution observational data from eBird to understand regional and seasonal variation in thermal sensitivity for 21 bird species. Across their ranges, most birds demonstrated regional and seasonal variation in both thermal peak and range, or the temperature and range of temperatures when observations peaked. Some birds demonstrated constant thermal peaks or ranges across their geographical distributions, while others varied according to local and current environmental conditions. Across species, birds typically demonstrated either geographical or seasonal adaptation to climate. Local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity are likely important but neglected aspects of organismal responses to climate change.

Distribution of leaflet traits across different habitats: a phylogenetically controlled test using Neotropical palms

ABSTRACT Background Traits associated with resource acquisition and use are related to current or past environmental conditions. Consequently, similar environments are occupied by closely related lineages or by different lineages that have converged to occupy them. Understanding how functional traits vary in relation to environmental gradients facilitates a more predictive ecology of the Anthropocene. Aims: We investigated whether leaflet traits of palm species are phylogenetically conserved and how this influences their distribution in the Neotropics. Methods We measured specific leaflet area (SLA) and leaf thickness in 79 Neotropical palm species. We then assessed the relationship between these variables and their distribution at different habitat type scales using phylogenetically controlled linear mixed models. Results Phylogenetically close species showed greater similarities in SLA and lower similarities in leaflet thickness than expected from their phylogenetic relationships. Species from open habitats and forest canopy species had thick leaves and low SLA, while the opposite was found for understorey species. Conclusions Phylogenetic conservatism in SLA combined with phylogenetic divergence in leaflet thickness reveals leaflet trade-off strategies in palms and is related to their distribution in the Neotropics. Anthropogenic impacts may threaten understorey species in particular, which in the long-term may cause homogenisation of palm communities and loss of functional diversity.

Semarang has been a trading city since the colonial era. One of the famous trading areas in Semarang is the Johar market district. The district has historical value. Up to now, this area is the largest traditional market in Semarang city. The Johar market building is one of the cultural heritage buildings in Semarang. There was such a big open space called Aloon-Aloon, near the Johar market. A big mosque, Kauman Grand Mosque, lies near the open space. The open space and the mosque have historical value in Semarang’s socio-cultural life. In May 2015, a big fire destroyed the buildings of Johar and Yaik markets. The building was reconstructed and renovated becoming a new Johar Market. In accordance with Aloon-Aloon’s concept, the former Yaik Market site was returned to be a public open space adapting to the current environmental and social conditions of society. In early 2022, the new market and the new public open space have been operated. This paper aims to describe images of the new Johar and Aloon-Aloon district. The paper implements a qualitative descriptive method for describing the current condition and using the theory of place related to the image of the district. The analysis utilizes pictures, and diagrams and is supported by the interview with the stakeholders. The results are a description of the new Johar – Aloon-Aloon district.
