Evaluating hydrothermal liquefaction hydrochar from sewage sludge as a phosphorus resource through struvite production

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) has attracted considerable attention for valorizing sewage sludge to biofuels while the solid residue, hydrochar, has received little attention for its final application. In the current work hydrochar recovered from hot separation in a pilot-scale HTL plant is evaluated for its nutrient value, in particular as a sustainable Phosphorus (P) resource. Following thorough characterization of the hydrochar, P recovery as struvite (NH4MgPO4·6H2O) is investigated to produce a fertilizer with a lower heavy metal content that could be used in current agricultural practices. P extraction using inorganic (hydrochloric and sulphuric) and organic (citric) acids is evaluated by applying 0.1–1 mol/L of acids for 1–12 h with a liquid/solid ratio of 10 mL/g. A second-order polynomial model was established by response surface methodology (RSM) to predict the P extraction with different acids. The optimum operating conditions for maximum P extraction (94 %) are suggested as 0.7 M of acid strength (H2SO4) and 6.5 h of extraction time. Addition of citric acid (CA) during the struvite precipitation from acid-leached P solution was found to improve the struvite purity from 36.6 % to 54 % with a reduction in heavy metal content. Furthermore, morphological analysis validated the formation of struvite. Upon comparison with the regulations, hydrochar was found to exceed some of the heavy metal limits but was low in polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) and showed low toxicity to Aliivibrio fischeri. P extraction and struvite precipitation are shown to reduce heavy metal contents below regulatory limits with P recoveries from 40 % to 67 %. Thus, as an alternative to direct land application of hydrochar, harvested struvite from hydrochar could be applied as a fertilizer with no apparent environmental risk.

Soil erosion in the United States: Present and future (2020–2050)

Brought on by anthropogenic actions, accelerated soil erosion inflicts extreme changes in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. These field-scale (30 m) changes have neither been fully surveyed in the present, nor predicted for a probable future. Water-driven soil erosion (i.e., sheet and rill erosion) rates across the contiguous United States were estimated for the present, and then predicted for the future using three alternative Shared Socioeconomic Pathway and Representative Concentration Pathway (SSP-RCP) scenarios (2.6, 4.5, and 8.5) of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). The G2 erosion model which is integrated with Machine Learning (ML) and Remote Sensing (RS) techniques were used to estimate soil erosion based on gauge observations of long-term precipitation, and climate and land use land cover (LULC) scenarios. The baseline model (2020) estimated soil erosion rates of 2.32 Mg ha−1yr−1 under current conservation agriculture practices (CPs). Maintaining current CPs, future scenarios predict an 8 % to 21 % increase in soil erosion under different combinations of SSP-RCP climate and LULC change scenarios. The findings of this study can help policy makers for future conservation planning on maintaining soil fertility, mitigating environmental impacts, and promoting food security.

Mitigating microplastic stress on peanuts: The role of biochar-based synthetic community in the preservation of soil physicochemical properties and microbial diversity

Tire-derived rubber crumbs (RC), as a new type of microplastics (MPs), harms both the environment and human health. Excessive use of plastic, the decomposition of which generates microplastic particles, in current agricultural practices poses a significant threat to the sustainability of agricultural ecosystems, worldwide food security and human health. In this study, the application of biochar, a carbon-rich material, to soil was explored, especially in the evaluation of synthetic biochar-based community (SynCom) to alleviate RC-MP-induced stress on plant growth and soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial communities in peanuts. The results revealed that RC-MPs significantly reduced peanut shoot dry weight, root vigor, nodule quantity, plant enzyme activity, soil urease and dehydrogenase activity, as well as soil available potassium, and bacterial abundance. Moreover, the study led to the identification highly effective plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) from the peanut rhizosphere, which were then integrated into a SynCom and immobilized within biochar. Application of biochar-based SynCom in RC-MPs contaminated soil significantly increased peanut biomass, root vigor, nodule number, and antioxidant enzyme activity, alongside enhancing soil enzyme activity and rhizosphere bacterial abundance. Interestingly, under high-dose RC-MPs treatment, the relative abundance of rhizosphere bacteria decreased significantly, but their diversity increased significantly and exhibited distinct clustering phenomenon. In summary, the investigated biochar-based SynCom proved to be a potential soil amendment to mitigate the deleterious effects of RC-MPs on peanuts and preserve soil microbial functionality. This presents a promising solution to the challenges posed by contaminated soil, offering new avenues for remediation.

Risk assessment of Retithrips syriacus for the EU.

Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Plant Health performed a quantitative risk assessment for the EU of Retithrips syriacus (Mayet) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), a polyphagous thrips, regarded as a tropical/subtropical pest occurring in several countries of Africa, South America, Asia and in the EU in Cyprus. The current risk assessment focused on potential pathways for entry, the climatic conditions allowing establishment, the expected spread capacity and the impact considering a time horizon of 10 years (2023-2032). The Panel identified the import of cut roses, persimmons, table grapes, as well as plants for planting of the genera Acalypha and Terminalia from third countries and those of Persea americana (avocado) from Israel as the most relevant entry pathways to consider. Over the next 10 years, an annual median estimate of 95 (90% Certainty Range, CR, ranging from 13 to 1832) potential R. syriacus founder populations per year are expected to successfully transfer to a suitable host in the EU NUTS2 regions where the climatic conditions are predicted as suitable for establishment; this value drops to a median of 4.6 founder populations per year (90% CR: 1 every 1.9 years - 85.6 per year) after considering the actual probability of establishment of a potential founder population. The estimated number of founder population per year is mostly driven by the import of cut roses and plants for planting. If such founder populations were to establish, R. syriacus is estimated to spread at a median rate of 0.05 km/year (90% CR 0.02-2.30 km/year) after a median lag phase of 1.1 years (90% CR 0.3-3.3 years). The overall impact on yield (expressed as % of the total agricultural production) directly attributable to R. syriacus when considering: (i) the main R. syriacus hosts in the EU, (ii) the areas of the EU where establishment is possible, (iii) the current agricultural practices and (iv) the evidence of impact from the countries where the pest is established for a long time, was estimated at 0.065% as the median value of the uncertainty distribution (90% CR 0.001%-0.571%). Options for risk reduction are discussed, but the effectiveness was not quantified.

One for all and all for one: a review on the commonality of risk to honeybees and wild pollinators and the benefits of beekeepers in conservation

Pollinator declines across the globe are centrally driven by a synergistic interaction between intensive land use, pesticides, and climate change. Competition between managed and wild pollinators has been a growing topic of research, however the ensuing social conflict builds antagonism between beekeepers and conservationists, two parties that have an interest in protecting natural diversity for pollinators. The threats perpetuating this potential for competition are as real for managed bees as wild species and uniting both groups, wherever possible, can create long lasting and meaningful change in current agricultural practices. This review examines the most recent literature on pollinator competition and the common threats that drive it. It also delves into the social elements of beekeeping and examines the potential for beekeepers to contribute to the protection of natural habitats. Beekeepers have a genuine interest to preserve natural space and with their charismatic species, dutiful observations, and innovative techniques, they can be valuable assets in filling knowledge gaps and generating public interest. Pollinator strategies in the future should include beekeepers as key stakeholders if their impacts are to be improved.

Pyrolysis temperature and time of rice husk biochar potentially control ammonia emissions and Chinese cabbage yield from urea-fertilized soils

Current agricultural practices are increasingly favoring the biochar application to sequester carbon, enhance crop growth, and mitigate various environmental pollutants resulting from nitrogen (N) loss. However, since biochar’s characteristics can vary depending on pyrolysis conditions, it is essential to determine the optimal standard, as they can have different effects on soil health. In this study, we categorized rice husk biochars basis on their pH levels and investigated the role of each rice husk biochar in reducing ammonia (NH3) emissions and promoting the growth of Chinese cabbage in urea-fertilized fields. The findings of this study revealed that the variation in pyrolysis conditions of rice husk biochars and N rates affected both the NH3 emissions and crop growth. The neutral (pH 7.10) biochar exhibited effective NH3 volatilization reduction, attributed to its high surface area (6.49 m2 g−1), outperforming the acidic (pH 6.10) and basic (pH 11.01) biochars, particularly under high N rates (640 kg N ha−1). Chinese cabbage yield was highest, reaching 4.00 kg plant−1, with the basic biochar application with high N rates. Therefore, the neutral rice husk biochar effectively mitigate the NH3 emissions from urea-treated fields, while the agronomic performance of Chinese cabbage enhanced in all biochar amendments.

Sustainable AI-based production agriculture: Exploring AI applications and implications in agricultural practices

In general, agriculture plays a crucial role in human survival as a primary source of food, alongside other sources such as fishing. Unfortunately, global warming and other environmental issues, particularly in less privileged nations, hamper the Agricultural sector. It is estimated that a range of 720 to 811 million individuals experienced food insecurity. Today's agriculture faced significant difficulties and obstacles, as do the surveillance and monitoring systems (climate, energy, water, fields, works, cost, fertilizers, diseases, etc.). The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the susceptibilities and insufficiencies inherent in worldwide food systems. Current agricultural practices tend to prioritize productivity and profitability over environmental conservation and long-term sustainability. To establish sustainable agriculture capable of meeting the needs of a projected ten billion people in the next 30 years, substantial structural and automation changes are required. However, these obstacles can be overcome by employing smart technologies and advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in agricultural operations. AI is believed to contribute to global sustainability goals in multiple sectors, particularly in the incorporation of renewable energy. It is anticipated that AI will revitalize both existing and new agricultural fields by retrofitting, installing and integrating automatic devices and instruments. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the most promising and novel applications of AI in the agriculture industry. Furthermore, the role of AI in the transition to sustainability and precision agriculture is investigated.

Humalite enhances the growth, grain yield, and protein content of wheat by improving soil nitrogen availability and nutrient uptake

AbstractBackgroundThe application of synthetic chemical inputs in current agricultural practices has significantly increased crop production, but their use has caused severe negative consequences on the environment. Humalite is an organic soil amendment that is rich in humic acid and found in large deposits in southern Alberta, Canada. Humic products can enhance nutrient uptake and assimilation in plants by reducing nutrient losses and enhancing bioavailability in the soil.AimHere, we evaluated the effects of different humalite rates in the presence of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (NPK) at recommended rates on soil nitrogen availability, wheat growth, grain yield, seed nutritional quality, and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) under controlled environmental conditions.MethodsA series of studies were conducted by applying five different rates of humalite (0, 200, 400, 800, and 1600 kg ha−1) with NPK at recommended rates. Soil nitrogen availability and shoot and root growth parameters were recorded at flowering stage. NUE was calculated based on the grain yield at maturity stage.ResultsPlants grown in the presence of humalite augmented root morphological parameters (root length, volume, and surface area), plant biomass (shoot and root), and nutrient uptake (N, P, K, and S) compared to the plants supplied with recommended fertilizer alone. Furthermore, humalite application significantly increased grain yield (14%–19%), seed protein content (23%–30%), and NUE (14%–60%) compared to the fertilizer application alone.ConclusionThese findings suggest that humalite can be used as an organic soil amendment to reduce synthetic fertilizer application and improve plant growth and yield while enhancing fertilizer use efficiency.

Toxicity of a Common Glyphosate Metabolite to the Freshwater Planarian (Girardia tigrina)

To establish meaningful policy directives for sustainable agrochemical use, we require baseline knowledge of the impacts of agrochemicals on non-target organisms. The widespread use of the herbicide glyphosate has resulted in the global presence of its metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). AMPA is commonly found in water bodies, including freshwater systems. We investigated the effects of AMPA exposure on the survivorship, regenerative abilities, and locomotion of the brown planarian (Girardia tigrina), a water-dwelling flatworm commonly found in freshwater ecosystems. In a series of experiments, we bisected and then exposed planarians to realistic field doses of AMPA for seven days and then fourteen days. For the 14-day experiment, we exposed planarians to two concentrations consistent with the high and low ranges of concentrations observed in water systems. Compared to the control group, we found that planarians exposed to AMPA for fourteen days (un-bisected for the first seven days and recovering from bisection for the subsequent seven) exhibited slower regeneration from the tail segment. Our findings highlight the potential ecological impacts of AMPA contamination on planarian populations. Quantifying the effects of AMPA exposure on planarians contributes to our understanding of the ecological consequences of our current and common agricultural practices on our freshwater ecosystems.

Variety mixtures of winter wheat: a general status and national case study

AbstractFood and feed production worldwide heavily relies on wheat (Triticum aestivum). However, current agricultural practices face numerous challenges including a shortage of land for cultivation, a desire to reduce the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, and the development of resistance towards employed pesticides and virulence towards host resistance in the most widely grown varieties. In this paper, we demonstrate based on the literature that cultivating wheat variety mixtures generally leads to increased yield and yield stability across years and environments, reduced severity of multiple diseases, and a decreased risk of lodging before harvest compared to the cultivation of pure stands. Moreover, mixtures may delay fungicide resistance development and increase genetic diversity, ultimately prolonging the durability of resistance genes. Furthermore, growing mixtures may lower the risk of crop failure due to more extreme weather events and lead to better utilization of water and nutrients. We discuss a Danish case study advocating the cropping of wheat varieties in mixtures as an example of how variety mixtures can be utilized in integrated pest management strategies. The study shows that if all involved stakeholder groups promote the adoption of variety mixtures, a major uptake by farmers can be reached, potentially reducing the dependency on pesticides in current cropping schemes.

Why do we make changes to the long-term experiments at Rothamsted?

The long-term field experiments at Rothamsted in south-east England (UK) are an important resource that has been used extensively to study the effects of land management, atmospheric pollution and climate change on soil fertility and the sustainability of crop yields. However, for these and other long-term experiments around the world to remain useful, changes are sometimes needed. These changes may be required to ensure that the experiment is not compromised by e.g. acidification or weeds, but often they are needed to ensure that the experiment remains relevant to current agricultural practice, e.g. the introduction of new cultivars and the judicious use of pesticides. However, changes should not be made just for the sake of change or to investigate aspects of management that could be better resolved in a short-term experiment. Rather, modifications should only be made after carefully considered discussion, involving scientists from different disciplines. It must be remembered however that there are limitations to what can be achieved in one experiment. In this paper we give examples of why certain changes were made to the Rothamsted experiments and what the results of those changes have been. We also highlight the value of archiving crop and soil samples for future studies.

Modification of the temporary maximum residue levels for mepiquat in cultivated fungi and oyster mushrooms.

In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant BASF SE submitted a request to the competent national authority in Finland to modify the temporary maximum residue level (MRL) to a permanent MRL for the active substance mepiquat in cultivated fungi (with a specific MRL for oyster mushrooms). The data submitted in support of the request (monitoring data from food business operators) are not sufficient to derive permanent MRL proposals. The assessment of these data, complemented by an analysis of the most recent monitoring data available from EU monitoring programmes, supports the conclusion that the existing t-MRL for cultivated fungi is still sufficient to account for the residue uptake in cultivated mushrooms other than oyster mushrooms. It was also noted that lower t-MRLs could be derived based on the assessment of the most recent monitoring data. A risk management decision is still needed on whether to maintain the existing t-MRL value. Regarding oyster mushrooms, EFSA derived different options for risk managers to eventually update the values of the temporary MRLs based on the most recent monitoring data from food business operators. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of mepiquat (expressed as mepiquat chloride) in the commodities under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short-term and long-term intake of residues resulting from the cross-contamination of untreated cultivated fungi (including oyster mushrooms) from cereal straw lawfully treated with mepiquat according to the current agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Towards Sustainable Farming: Leveraging AIoT for Precision Water Management and Crop Yield Optimization

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations have Zero Hunger and Responsible Consumption and Production as the two significant agriculture-related components. Conventional irrigation control systems, relying heavily on manual labour, exhibit shortcomings in minimizing farmer input dependency. Recognizing the critical interdependence of water resource management, crop yield optimization, and environmental preservation, this work contends that precision in water management is essential. While efforts to reuse treated wastewater offer potential water conservation solutions, they often compromise crop yield. Precisely calculating water requirements can enhance crop yield, reduce human involvement, eliminate potential decision-making errors, and address water conservation issues. Automating tasks like irrigation demands comprehensive knowledge of crop and soil characteristics, climate conditions, time factors, and physical parameters like temperature, soil moisture, and humidity. This research addresses the limitations of current agricultural practices by advocating for a paradigm shift towards sustainable farming through the integration of Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT). The proposed framework leverages the fusion of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) to automate irrigation by employing a comprehensive analysis of diverse parameters. Through empirical evaluation, this work demonstrates that AIoT-based precision water management not only improves crop yield but also reduces human intervention, addressing water conservation challenges, and fostering sustainable agriculture practices.

Effects of mixtures of herbicides on nutrient cycling and plant support considering current agriculture practices

The use of mixtures of pesticides and consecutive pesticide applications challenge current regulations aimed at protecting ecosystem health due to unpredictable effects of complex and dynamic mixtures. In this study, we tested the ecotoxicological effects of mixtures of herbicides, applied following a real application scheme of soybean production on soil health in a mesocosm experiment. The experiment included two sequential applications; first, glyphosate + dicamba + clethodim, and 30 days later, flumioxazin + metolachlor. Commercial products were used at the recommended doses and at two other concentrations: half and double the recommended dose. Soybean plants were exposed to the herbicide-contaminated soil from the time of sowing to the beginning of pod formation. Half of the plants were harvested at the vegetative stage and the remaining plants at the reproductive stage to evaluate endpoints related to plant support and nutrient cycling. Plant biomass was significantly affected during the vegetative stage at the recommended and double the recommended dose, with the effects being mixture-dose dependent. Lower total and arbuscular colonization of mycorrhizas were also observed in double the recommended dose, and intermediate results were observed for the recommended dose. Nodule mass and phosphorous concentration in plants decreased with increasing herbicide doses. By the end of the experiment, nodule mass and total mycorrhizal colonization were low in the plants treated with double the recommended dose of herbicides. However, both endpoints reached similar values to the control at lower herbicide doses. Plant height and phenology were only lower at double the recommended dose during the experiment. The use of non-standard endpoints evidenced that important soil functions were transiently or permanently affected, while the realistic application scheme accounted for the impact of the management practice currently used. Pesticide risk assessment should therefore, incorporate both issues to effectively protect the ecosystems.

Climate Smart Agriculture: The Role of Fertilizer Innovations and Efficient Plant Nutrient Management

Climate change has emerged as a significant threat to the global agro-economy, adversely affecting agricultural productivity, food security, and local and global agricultural development goals. To ensure sustainable crop productivity and meet future demands, it is essential to take prompt actions to address the current challenges of lower agricultural productivity due to climate change. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is a novel concept that offers a promising approach to tackle these challenges by introducing sustainable farming practices that minimize negative environmental impacts and enhance resilience to climate change. It involves realigning current agricultural practices and introducing smart techniques to reduce the adverse effects of agriculture that contribute to climate change and higher carbon footprints. The importance of climate-smart fertilizers in agricultural productivity cannot be overemphasized, as the soil is susceptible to structural changes and alterations in nutrient availability due to climatic impacts. Therefore, the implementation of proper nutrient management mechanisms and advanced fertilizer innovations has become a top priority in implementing the concepts of CSA. Consequently, there has been a greater focus on introducing more climate-adaptive and resilient plant nutrient delivery systems and technologies in recent times. For instance, nanofertilizer, bio-based controlled-release and slow-release fertilizers have provided a more sustainable and climate-friendly alternative to traditional synthetic fertilizers. Despite the innovations, challenges remain in implementing CSA practices and practices of climate-smart fertilizers at scale. This is largely attributed to the lack of proper knowledge and a streamlined policy framework on climate resilience in agriculture and fertilizers. This article seeks to review the role of fertilizer innovations and nutrient management in CSA, targeting the reduction of nutrient losses due to climate changes. It also examines the current status of climate-smart fertilizers with a particular emphasis on the current implementation challenges and future prospects in fertilizer production, leading to global food security by adapting to climatic changes. By highlighting specific examples of modern climate-smart agriculture and fertilizer management, this article aims to provide insights into the potential benefits and challenges of implementing CSA practices and encourage further research and development in this important field.

Potential Applications of Electrospun Nanofibers in Agriculture

Some of the major challenges associated with current agricultural practices include inefficient delivery and utilization of agrochemicals; fertilizers, pesticides, and pheromones; to crops. This results in low nutrient utilization efficiency with respect to applied fertilizers which leads to a greater economic burden to farmers to maintain crop yields at optimum levels. In addition, plant diseases by various pathogens also pose a threat to agriculture. In an effort to address some of the aforementioned challenges, electrospun nanofibers have emerged as a potential class of one-dimensional nanomaterials for use in agricultural applications. Unique characteristics of electrospun nanofibers such as enhanced surface area: volume ratio, high porosity distribution, and increased specific surface area pave the potential for agricultural applications that will be elaborated in this review. These applications include slow-release of fertilizers, pheromones and insecticides, seed and fruit coatings, plant protection, and nanofiber fabricated sensors. In addition, this review also focuses briefly on other preparation methods of nanofibers, and most importantly on the parameters that govern the electrospinning process; solution parameters, processing parameters, and ambient parameters. Furthermore, many more unexplored applications in the field of agriculture employing nanofiber usage exist, and it is believed that a greater understanding of the current nanofiber research and practices of green electrospinning will enable the upliftment of current boundaries to enable agricultural applications of nanofibers on a commercial scale.

Stressful memories help plants resist caterpillars

Current agricultural practices heavily depend on harmful pesticides to protect crops against deadly pests and diseases. But what if plants could protect themselves? Our research uncovers an epigenetic mechanism that allows plants to 'remember' stress, providing them with long-lasting defense against pests like caterpillars. This discovery could pave the way for more sustainable crop protection strategies.

Real-Time Detection of Strawberry Ripeness Using Augmented Reality and Deep Learning.

Currently, strawberry harvesting relies heavily on human labour and subjective assessments of ripeness, resulting in inconsistent post-harvest quality. Therefore, the aim of this work is to automate this process and provide a more accurate and efficient way of assessing ripeness. We explored a unique combination of YOLOv7 object detection and augmented reality technology to detect and visualise the ripeness of strawberries. Our results showed that the proposed YOLOv7 object detection model, which employed transfer learning, fine-tuning and multi-scale training, accurately identified the level of ripeness of each strawberry with an mAP of 0.89 and an F1 score of 0.92. The tiny models have an average detection time of 18 ms per frame at a resolution of 1280 × 720 using a high-performance computer, thereby enabling real-time detection in the field. Our findings distinctly establish the superior performance of YOLOv7 when compared to other cutting-edge methodologies. We also suggest using Microsoft HoloLens 2 to overlay predicted ripeness labels onto each strawberry in the real world, providing a visual representation of the ripeness level. Despite some challenges, this work highlights the potential of augmented reality to assist farmers in harvesting support, which could have significant implications for current agricultural practices.

Recent Advancement in Genetically Modified Crops

Abstract: Current agricultural practices alone will neither address the shortage of food nor abolish worldwide hungry and malnourished people. The major reason behind food shortage is crop loss and reduced crop yield. Continuous application of insecticides and controlling agents have raised more serious concern regarding soil fertility and bioaccumulation of toxic compounds. Genetically modified (GM) crops is one of the evoluting methods to tackle the food shortage. GM crops have higher resisitance towards pests, pathogens and abiotic factors alonwith higher crop yield. However, ethical concern related to foreign genes, evolution of resistant pest and possible toxic effect on end consumer. The current review paper discussed negative and positive effects, risk and contversies, public concerns and consumers attitude, ethical concerns for using GM crops and its future challenges.

Rhizobacterial mediated interactions in Curcuma longa for plant growth and enhanced crop productivity: a systematic review.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), a significant commercial crop of the Indian subcontinent is widely used as a condiment, natural dye, and as a cure for different ailments. Various bioactive compounds such as turmerones and curcuminoids have been isolated from C. longa that have shown remarkable medicinal activity against various ailments. However, reduced soil fertility, climatic variations, rapid urbanization, and enhanced food demand, pose a multifaceted challenge to the current agricultural practices of C. longa. Plant growth-promoting microbes play a vital role in plant growth and development by regulating primary and secondary metabolite production. Rhizospheric associations are complex species-specific interconnections of different microbiota with a plant that sustain soil health and promote plant growth through nutrient acquisition, nitrogen fixation, phosphate availability, phytohormone production, and antimicrobial activities. An elaborative study of microbiota associated with the roots of C. longa is essential for rhizospheric engineering as there is a huge potential to develop novel products based on microbial consortium formulations and elicitors to improve plant health, stress tolerance, and the production of secondary metabolites such as curcumin. Primarily, the purpose of this review is to implicate the rhizospheric microbial flora as probiotics influencing overall C. longa health, development, and survival for an increase in biomass, enhanced yield of secondary metabolites, and sustainable crop production.
