ARPES detection of superconducting gap sign in unconventional superconductors

The superconducting gap symmetry is crucial in understanding the underlying superconductivity mechanism. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has played a key role in determining the gap symmetry in unconventional superconductors. However, it has been considered so far that ARPES can only measure the magnitude of the superconducting gap but not its phase; the phase has to be detected by other phase-sensitive techniques. Here we propose a method to directly detect the superconducting gap sign by ARPES. This method is successfully validated in a cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ with a well-known d-wave gap symmetry. When two bands have a strong interband interaction, the resulted electronic structures in the superconducting state are sensitive to the relative gap sign between the two bands. Our present work provides an approach to detect the gap sign and can be applied to various superconductors, particularly those with multiple orbitals like the iron-based superconductors.

Oscillating paramagnetic Meissner effect and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ.

Superconducting phase transitions in two dimensions lie beyond the description of the Ginzburg-Landau symmetry-breaking paradigm for three-dimensional superconductors. They are Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transitions of paired-electron condensate driven by the unbinding of topological excitations, i.e. vortices. The recently discovered monolayers of layered high-transition-temperature ([Formula: see text]) cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi2212) meant that this 2D superconductor promised to be ideal for the study of unconventional superconductivity. But inhomogeneity posed challenges for distinguishing BKT physics from charge correlations in this material. Here, we utilize the phase sensitivity of scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy susceptometry to image the local magnetic response of underdoped Bi2212 from the monolayer to the bulk throughout its phase transition. The monolayer segregates into domains with independent phases at elevated temperatures below [Formula: see text]. Within a single domain, we find that the susceptibility oscillates with flux between diamagnetism and paramagnetism in a Fraunhofer-like pattern up to [Formula: see text]. The finite modulation period, as well as the broadening of the peaks when approaching [Formula: see text] from below, suggests well-defined vortices that are increasingly screened by the dissociation of vortex-antivortex plasma through a BKT transition. In the multilayers, the susceptibility oscillation differs in a small temperature regime below [Formula: see text], consistent with a dimensional crossover led by interlayer coupling. Serving as strong evidence for BKT transition in the bulk, we observe a sharp jump in phase stiffness and paramagnetism at small fields just below [Formula: see text]. These results unify the superconducting phase transitions from the monolayer to the bulk underdoped Bi2212, and can be collectively referred to as the BKT transition with interlayer coupling.

Periodic Atomic Displacements and Visualization of the Electron-Lattice Interaction in the Cuprate

Traditionally, X-ray scattering techniques have been used to detect the breaking of the structural symmetry of the lattice, which accompanies a periodic displacement of the atoms associated with charge density wave (CDW) formation in the cuprate pseudogap states. Similarly, the Spectroscopic Imaging Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (SI-STM) has visualized the short-range CDW. However, local coupling of electrons to the lattice in the form of a short-range CDW has been a challenge to visualize, thus a link between these measurements has been missing. Here, we introduce a novel STM-based technique to visualize the local bond length variations obtained from topographic imaging with picometer precision. Application of this technique to the high-Tc cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+{\delta} revealed a high-fidelity local lattice distortion of the BiO lattice as large as 2%. In addition, analysis of local breaking of rotational symmetry associated with the bond lengths reveals modulations around four-unit-cell periodicity in both B1 and E representations in the C4v group of the lattice, which coincides with the uni-directional d-symmetry CDW (dCDW) previously identified within the CuO2 planes, thus providing direct evidence of electron-lattice coupling in the pseudogap state and a link between the X-ray scattering and STM measurements. Overall, our results suggest that the periodic lattice displacements in E representations correspond to a locally-frozen version of the soft phonons identified by the X-ray scattering measurements, and a fluctuation of the bond length is reflected by the fluctuation of the dCDW formation near the quantum critical point.

Anisotropy of Electronic Spin Texture in the High-Temperature Cuprate Superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ

Seeking new order parameters and the related broken symmetry and studying their relationship with phase transition have been important topics in condensed matter physics. Here, by using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we confirm the helical spin texture caused by spin-layer locking in the nodal region in the cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ and discover the anisotropy of spin polarizations at nodes along Γ–X and Γ–Y directions. The breaking of C 4 rotational symmetry in electronic spin texture may give deeper insights into understanding the ground state of cuprate superconductors.

A sample-position-autocorrection system with precision better than 1 µm in angle-resolved photoemission experiments

We present the development of a high-precision sample-position-autocorrection system for photoemission experiments. A binocular vision method based on image pattern matching calculations was realized to track the sample position with an accuracy better than 1 µm, which was much smaller than the spot size of the incident laser. We illustrate the performance of the sample-position-autocorrection system with representative photoemission data on the topological insulator Bi2Se3 and an optimally doped cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ. Our method provides new possibilities for studying the temperature-dependent electronic structures in quantum materials using laser-based or spatially resolved photoemission systems with high precision and efficiency.

Circuit models of simultaneously biased intrinsic Josephson junction stacks for terahertz radiations in high-bias regime

Experiment-based circuit models for Josephson plasma emitters (JPEs) made of cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ single crystals are proposed. Introducing an LCR resonator shunting an RCSJ parallel circuit allows us to reproduce experimental radiation intensity as a function of device voltage. Mismatch in the resonance frequencies of the total device and the LCR part is related to the wide-range tuning of the radiation frequency of JPE. It is found that coupling capacitances for simultaneously biased operations provide significant increases in radiation intensities, which have been reported as synchronized radiation from multiple mesas in the literature.

THz emission from a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ cross-whisker junction

Cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (BSCCO) has been a promising candidate of a coherent, continuous, and compact THz light source owing to its intrinsic Josephson junction (IJJ) inside the crystal structure. In this paper, we utilized BSCCO cross-whisker (CW) junctions to produce THz emitter device using the whisker crystals which can be easily obtained compared with single crystals. As a result, we have successfully observed the emission from the CW IJJ at the frequency of ∼0.7 THz, which is the first observation of a THz emission from whiskers to our knowledge. Our findings would enlarge the applicability of BSCCO superconductors for compact THz emission sources.

Elastic properties of few unit cell thick superconducting crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ

We present systematic measurements of the mechanical properties of few unit cell (UC) thick exfoliated crystals of a high-Tc cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ. We determine the elastic properties of these crystals by deformation using an atomic force microscope at room temperature. With the spatial measurements of local compliance and their detailed modeling, we independently determine the Young's modulus of rigidity and the prestress. The Young's modulus of rigidity is found to be in the range of 22 GPa–30 GPa for flakes with a thickness from ∼5 UC to 18 UC. The prestress spreads over the range of 5 MPa–46 MPa, indicating a run-to-run variation during the exfoliation process. The determination of Young's modulus of rigidity for thin flakes is further verified from the recently reported buckling technique.

Ultrathin Bismuth Film on High-Temperature Cuprate Superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ as a Candidate of a Topological Superconductor.

One of the key challenges in condensed-matter physics is to establish a topological superconductor that hosts exotic Majorana fermions. Although various heterostructures consisting of conventional BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) superconductors as well as doped topological insulators were intensively investigated, no conclusive evidence for Majorana fermions has been provided. This is mainly because of their very low superconducting transition temperatures ( Tc) and small superconducting-gap magnitude. Here, we report a possible realization of topological superconductivity at very high temperatures in a hybrid of Bi(110) ultrathin film and copper oxide superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi2212). Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, we found that three-bilayer-thick Bi(110) on Bi2212 exhibits a proximity-effect-induced s-wave energy gap as large as 7.5 meV which persists up to Tc of Bi2212 (85 K). The small Fermi energy and strong spin-orbit coupling of Bi(110), together with the large pairing gap and high Tc, make this system a prime candidate for exploring stable Majorana fermions at very high temperatures.

A scanning tunneling microscope for spectroscopic imaging below 90 mK in magnetic fields up to 17.5 T.

We describe the development and performance of an ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscope working under combined extreme conditions of ultra-low temperatures and high magnetic fields. We combined a top-loading dilution refrigerator and a standard bucket dewar with a bottom-loading superconducting magnet to achieve 4.5 days operating time, which is long enough to perform various spectroscopic-imaging measurements. To bring the effective electron temperature closer to the mixing-chamber temperature, we paid particular attention to filtering out radio-frequency noise, as well as enhancing the thermal link between the microscope unit and the mixing chamber. We estimated the lowest effective electron temperature to be below 90 mK by measuring the superconducting-gap spectrum of aluminum. We confirmed the long-term stability of the spectroscopic-imaging measurement by visualizing superconducting vortices in the cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ .

Impact of work function induced electric fields on laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We examine the effects of the electric fields caused by the difference in work function between a sample and its surroundings in laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (laser ARPES) experiments. To simulate these effects we created several samples and surrounding puck geometries using SimIon 8.0 modeling software, and found that in most cases the system can be approximated by a circular sample mounted on an infinite conducting plane. Experimental measurements of the cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ mounted on copper, aluminum, and graphite pucks confirmed the model's accuracy. Both the model and experimental data showed that work-function-induced fields have a significant effect on the outgoing trajectories of electrons for kinetic energies up to six times the work function difference between the sample and the puck. However, with the exception of effects very close to the sample edge, all electric field effects can be taken into account using linear corrections.

Pressure-induced isostructural phase transition in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ

The high-pressure structures of an underdoped cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ have been studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction at pressures up to 36.5 GPa. We find that this superconductor retains its orthogonal structure with the space group Amaa in the pressure range studied. Upon compression, both the a and b axes first shrink monotonically up to 17.4 GPa from their ambient pressure values and keep these behaviors with positive compressibilities up to 36.5 GPa after experiencing expansion with negative compressibilities in the pressure regime between 17.4 and 23.7 GPa. However, the c axis decreases continuously with increasing pressure with a slow change at about 23.7 GPa. The results indicate an isostructural phase transition starting at 17.4 GPa and a structural collapse at around 23.7 GPa.

Quantitative Comparison between Electronic Raman Spectra and Angle-resolved Photoemission Spectra in Superconducting State of Bi2212

Abstract In this paper we present the calculations of electronic Raman scattering (ERS) spectra for B1 g and B2 g geometries using angle- resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) spectra of nearly optimally doped cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212), Tc=92K. Calculations were taken on the Fermi surface (FS) in the superconducting state at temperature well below Tc and the results were quantitatively compared to the experimental data. It shows that there is a good agreement in B1 g while the peak position in B2 g is about 100 cm-1 lower than the experimental one. This result indicates that the scattering rate is not large enough to explain Raman spectra and additional contribution should be taken into account to reproduce ERS spectra.

An ultrafast angle-resolved photoemission apparatus for measuring complex materials

We present technical specifications for a high resolution time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy setup based on a hemispherical electron analyzer and cavity-dumped solid state Ti:sapphire laser used to generate pump and probe beams, respectively, at 1.48 and 5.93 eV. The pulse repetition rate can be tuned from 209 Hz to 54.3 MHz. Under typical operating settings the system has an overall energy resolution of 23 meV, an overall momentum resolution of 0.003 Å(-1), and an overall time resolution of 310 fs. We illustrate the system capabilities with representative data on the cuprate superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+δ). The descriptions and analyses presented here will inform new developments in ultrafast electron spectroscopy.

Terahertz oscillation in submicron sized intrinsic Josephson junctions

Intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) with lateral sizes down to submicron have been fabricated in high temperature cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ single crystals. With in-plane magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the short edges, equally spaced current steps with intervals up to millivolts have been observed in current-voltage characteristics, indicating that terahertz oscillation has been excited in the junctions. The one-by-one switching to the same resonance frequency will make possible to employ a submicron sized IJJs stack as a building block for solid state terahertz continuous wave sources.

Temperature-induced momentum-dependent spectral weight transfer in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta

Angle-resolved photoemission data from the cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta above and below the superconducting transition temperature Tc reveal momentum-dependent changes that extend up to an energy of about 0.3 electron volt, or 40kTc (where k is the Boltzmann constant). The data suggest an anomalous transfer of spectral weight from one momentum to another, involving a sizable momentum transfer Q approximately (0.45pi, 0). The observed Q is intriguingly near the charge-order periodicity required if fluctuating charge stripes are present.

Excitation Gap in the Normal State of Underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta

Angle-resolved photoemission experiments reveal evidence of an energy gap in the normal state excitation spectrum of the cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. This gap exists only in underdoped samples and closes around the doping level at which the superconducting transition temperature Tc is a maximum. The momentum dependence and magnitude of the gap closely resemble those of the dx2-y2 gap observed in the superconducting state. This observation is consistent with results from several other experimental techniques, which also indicate the presence of a gap in the normal state. Some possible theoretical explanations for this effect are reviewed.
