Variation and Transformation of Evapotranspiration at Different Scales in a Desert Steppe

Water resources are severely scarce in desert steppes, and precipitation rarely collects in rivers or is transformed into groundwater. Evapotranspiration (ET) is the primary “export” of precipitation conversion and is the main mechanism for water vapor exchange between the underlying surface and atmosphere. ET changes have certain scale effects. This study focused on the natural grasslands in the Xilamuren Desert Steppe and analyzed and estimated the ET patterns at different scales, including micro-, point-, and surface scales, using observational data from instruments such as a photosynthetic meter, Eddy-covariance system (EC), and large-aperture scintillometer (LAS) from the Ecological Hydrology National Field Science Observation Station in the northern foothills of the Yin Mountains, Inner Mongolia. The spatial scale was extended based on this analysis. The results showed that at the microscale, the diurnal variation in the photosynthetic and transpiration rates of Leymus chinensis followed a bimodal curve. In July and August (high-temperature months), photosynthetic and transpiration rates were almost synchronous. In May and October, when the temperature was moderate, the transpiration rate was delayed compared to the photosynthetic rate at the first peak, and the second peak was significantly smaller than the first peak. At the point-scale, the daily average ET during the growing season was 1.37 mm·d−1 and the total cumulative ET was 251 mm. Transpiration levels exhibited significant seasonal variation in the following order: July > August > June > September > May > October. At the surface-scale, the daily average ET during the growing season was 1.60 mm·d−1 and the total cumulative ET was 294 mm, which was 17% higher than that of the point-scale. The surface-scale ET was estimated using the observed values of the EC and the scale relationship formula and was optimized using different spatial scales of crop coefficients. This well reflected the ET patterns at the surface-scale. Therefore, this study proposes a spatial scale expansion method for a homogeneous underlying surface, verifies its value, and provides methodological support for estimating ET in cases of data scarcity.

Parameters of the Evapotranspiration-Yield Relationship in a Grass Mixture of English Ryegrass and Red Fescue

The study aims to establish the parameters of the relationship “Cumulative Evapotranspiration (ET) - yield from aboveground biomass” in a grass mixture of English ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and Red fescue (Festuca rubra L.). The results are necessary for the needs of landscaping in urbanized areas. Data from an experiment with the application of a regulated water deficit, carried out in the period 2009-2011 at the University of Forestry - Sofia on anthropogenic bulk soil, were used. Data on relative ET and relative yield were processed by the method of least squares, using three types of formulas - linear (FAO), power, and two-power. The most accurate is the two-power formula, which describes the dependence through an S-shaped curve at (raport of correlation) R=0.989. It has the following form: Y=[1–(1–x)1.74]5.29, where Y is the relative yield at the corresponding ET, which is denoted by x. High accuracy also shows the power formula, which has the following form: Y=1–2.23(1–x)1.28 and R=0.976. The FAO linear formula represents the relationship at R=0.805. It has the following form: Y=1–1.62(1–x).

Evapotranspiration Partitioning and Estimation Based on Crop Coefficients of Winter Wheat Cropland in the Guanzhong Plain, China

Accurate estimation and effective portioning of actual evapotranspiration (ETa) into soil evaporation (E) and plant transpiration (T) are important for increasing water use efficiency (WUE) and optimizing irrigation schedules in croplands. In this study, E/T partitioning was performed on ETa rates measured using the eddy covariance (EC) technique in three winter wheat growing seasons from October 2020 to June 2023. The variation in the crop coefficients (Kc, α, and KHc) were quantified by combining the ETa and reference evapotranspiration rates using the Penman–Monteith, Priestley–Taylor, and Hargreaves equations. In addition, the application of models based on the modified crop coefficient (Kc, α, and KHc) was proposed to estimate the ETa rates. According to the obtained results, the average cumulative ETa, T, and E rates in the three winter wheat growth seasons were 471.4, 265.2, and 206.3 mm, respectively. The average T/ETa ratio ranged from 0.16 to 0.72 at the different winter wheat growth stages. Vapor pressure deficit (VPD) affected the ETa rates at a threshold of 1.27 KPa. The average Kc, α, and KHc values in the middle stage were 1.34, 1.54, and 1.21, respectively. The measured ETa rates and ETa rates estimated using the adjusted Kc, α, and KHc showed regression slope coefficients of 0.96, 0.99, and 0.96, and coefficients of determination (R2) of 0.92, 0.93, and 0.90, respectively. Therefore, the Priestley–Taylor-equation-based adjusted crop coefficient is recommended. The adjusted crop-coefficient-based models can be used as valuable tools for local policymakers to effectively improve water use.

A Remote Sensing Approach for Assessing Daily Cumulative Evapotranspiration Integral in Wheat Genotype Screening for Drought Adaptation.

This study considers critical aspects of water management and crop productivity in wheat cultivation, specifically examining the daily cumulative actual evapotranspiration (ETa). Traditionally, ETa surface energy balance models have provided estimates at discrete time points, lacking a holistic integrated approach. Field trials were conducted with 22 distinct wheat varieties, grown under both irrigated and rainfed conditions over a two-year span. Leaf area index prediction was enhanced through a robust multiple regression model, incorporating data acquired from an unmanned aerial vehicle using an RGB sensor, and resulting in a predictive model with an R2 value of 0.85. For estimation of the daily cumulative ETa integral, an integrated approach involving remote sensing and energy balance models was adopted. An examination of the relationships between crop yield and evapotranspiration (ETa), while considering factors like year, irrigation methods, and wheat cultivars, unveiled a pronounced positive asymptotic pattern. This suggests the presence of a threshold beyond which additional water application does not significantly enhance crop yield. However, a genetic analysis of the 22 wheat varieties showed no correlation between ETa and yield. This implies opportunities for selecting resource-efficient wheat varieties while minimizing water use. Significantly, substantial disparities in water productivity among the tested wheat varieties indicate the possibility of intentionally choosing lines that can optimize grain production while minimizing water usage within breeding programs. The results of this research lay the foundation for the development of resource-efficient agricultural practices and the cultivation of crop varieties finely attuned to water-scarce regions.

Benefits of a robotic chamber system for determining evapotranspiration in an erosion-affected, heterogeneous cropland

Abstract. In the light of the ongoing global climate crisis and the related increases in extreme hydrological events, it is crucial to assess ecosystem resilience and – in agricultural systems – to ensure sustainable management and food security. For this purpose, a comprehensive understanding of ecosystem water cycle budgets and spatiotemporal dynamics is indispensable. Evapotranspiration (ET) plays a pivotal role in returning up to 90 % of incoming precipitation back to the atmosphere. Here, we studied the impacts of soil types and management on an agroecosystem's seasonal cumulative ET (ETsum) and agronomic water use efficiency (WUEagro, the dry matter per unit of water used by the crop). To do so, a plot experiment with winter rye (17 September 2020 to 30 June 2021) was conducted in an eroded cropland which is located in the hilly and dry ground moraine landscape of the Uckermark region in northeastern Germany. Along the experimental plot (110 m × 16 m), two closed chambers were mounted on a robotic gantry crane system (FluxCrane as part of the AgroFlux platform) and used to determine ET. Three soil types representing the full soil erosion gradient related to the hummocky ground moraine landscape (extremely eroded: Calcaric Regosol; strongly eroded: Nudiargic Luvisol; non-eroded: Calcic Luvisol) and additional topsoil dilution (topsoil removal and subsoil admixture) were investigated (randomized block design, three replicates per treatment). Five different modeling approaches were used and compared in the light of their potential for reliable ETsum over the entire crop cultivation period and to reproduce short-term (e.g., diurnal) water flux dynamics. While machine-learning approaches such as support vector machines (SVMs) and artificial neural networks (with Bayesian regularization; ANN_BR) generally performed well during calibration, SVMs also provided a satisfactory prediction of measured ET during validation (k-fold cross-validation, k=5). We found significant differences in dry biomass (DM) and small trends in ETsum between soil types, resulting in different WUEagro. The extremely eroded Calcaric Regosol showed an up to 46 % lower ETsum and up to 54 % lower WUEagro compared to the non-eroded Calcic Luvisol. The key period contributing to 70 % of ETsum spanned the beginning of stem elongation in April to the harvest in June. However, differences in the ETsum between soil types and topsoil dilution resulted predominantly from small differences between the treatments throughout the cultivation rather than only during this short period of time.

Irrigation contrasts through the morning transition

AbstractThe Land surface Interactions with the Atmosphere over the Iberian Semi‐arid Environment (LIAISE) campaign was conducted in July 2021, primarily to investigate the role of irrigation in modulating the boundary‐layer evolution in the Catalan region of northeastern Spain. Contrasts in near‐surface meteorological parameters and boundary‐layer thermodynamic profiles at an irrigated and rainfed (arid) site were established during the morning transition. Evapotranspriation dominated the flux partitioning at the irrigated site (Bowen ratio of 0.07–1.1), whilst sensible heat flux dominated at the rainfed (arid) site (Bowen ratio greater than 10.0). The cumulative evapotranspiration during July 2021 was a factor of 10 greater at the irrigated site than at the rainfed (arid) site. The presence of irrigation was shown to modulate the vertical gradients of turbulence, temperature, and moisture. Irrigation is shown to have a significant effect on the development of the boundary layer, including during the morning transition. The morning transition mean buoyancy flux was 2.8 times smaller at the irrigated site (1.1 ms) compared with the rainfed (arid) site (3.1 ms), with a resultant delay in the near‐surface buoyancy‐flux crossover time (30–90 min) at the irrigated site. At the start of the morning transition (sunrise), the average screen‐level (50‐m) temperature was K ( K) colder at the irrigated site relative to the rainfed (arid) site. The colder temperatures at sunrise at the irrigated site are predominantly the result of a colder boundary‐layer thermodynamic profile from the previous day. At the end of the morning transition (convective onset), temperature differences between the two sites extend through much of the boundary layer and increase in magnitude. The average screen‐level (50‐m) temperature difference was K ( K) colder at the irrigated site relative to the rainfed (arid) site. There was considerable day‐to‐day variability in temperature contrasts at a regional level ( to K).

Estimating cumulative evapotranspiration using superconducting gravimeter data: a study in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina

ABSTRACT A new method for estimating cumulative evapotranspiration using superconducting gravimeter data is presented. Evapotranspiration is computed from the classical water balance equation using precipitation data, estimated runoff, and water storage assessed from temporal variations of gravity. The gravity-based methodology is applied to a study site located at the Argentinian–German Geodetic Observatory (AGGO) in the flatland area of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), which houses the only superconducting gravimeter in South America. For the period from April 2017 to May 2018, the cumulative evapotranspiration is estimated at 710.7 ± 25.7 mm. Evapotranspiration values are successfully compared with estimates provided by three methods, based on the water balance equation using soil moisture data, the numerical modelling of water flow in the unsaturated zone and the MODIS product (MOD16A2). The analysis of evapotranspiration also allows us to identify a period of soil water stress which is validated by soil moisture measurements.

Evapotranspiration of advanced perennial bioenergy grasses produced on marginal land in the U.S. Midwest

The production of dedicated energy crops for biofuel and co-products can help develop a sustainable and viable bioeconomy under a changing climate. The co-production of perennial bioenergy and commodity crops in an agricultural landscape has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide numerous ecosystem services. However, as production of advanced, higher-yielding cultivars occurs, their impact on water resources needs to be considered. Estimates of evapotranspiration (ET) of perennial grasses compared to commodity crops are not always consistent in the literature. In this study, ET was estimated using an energy-balance model with Landsat satellite imagery and ground-based weather data to compare the large-scale production of advanced switchgrass cultivars (‘Independence’, ‘Liberty’, and ‘Carthage’), predecessor cultivars (‘Shawnee’ and ‘Sunburst’), and other perennial grasses (big bluestem and a low-diversity mixture) to corn grown continuously on marginal soils in the U.S. Midwest. Results showed significant differences in ET between corn and perennial grass treatments at four of the five field sites. However, differences between crop treatments were not consistent across sites, nor were the differences between advanced and predecessor switchgrass varieties. Production year played a large role in daily and cumulative ET across all sites. Differences in crop biomass yield between establishment and post-establishment years may contribute to these interannual differences. Site and interannual variations in precipitation and temperature may also be major contributing factors. Overall, the results of this study indicate that differences in ET between perennial bioenergy grasses and corn are likely dependent upon location of production and weather conditions.

Enhanced Soil Moisture Management Using Waste Green Algae-Derived Polymers: Optimization of Application Rate and Mixing Depth

Water scarcity poses a formidable challenge to agricultural productivity in arid regions, and water retention agents offer promising potential in this regard. Therefore, this study proposes developing and preparing polymers with water retention properties using waste green algae as raw material to explore the effectiveness of enhanced water infiltration and reduce evaporation at different use levels (0%, 0.15%, 0.30%, 0.45% and 0.60%) and maximum mixing depths (10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, 40 cm and 50 cm) and determine the optimum management. The results demonstrate that the synthesized polymers exhibited a remarkable swelling rate of 143.6 g/g, along with reusability and excellent temperature stability. The polymer application rate was positively correlated with infiltration duration, with an increase from 161 min to 750 min as the application rate rose from 0% to 0.60%. Concurrently, cumulative infiltration increased from 22.6 cm to 31.1 cm, showcasing the benefits of the polymer in enhancing water retention. Intriguingly, cumulative evapotranspiration initially decreased and then increased with increasing polymer application rates. Moreover, increasing the maximum mixing depth from 10 to 50 cm while maintaining the 0.3% application rate increased the cumulative infiltration (from 22.6 cm to 31.1 cm) and infiltration rate (from 0.03 cm/min to 0.08 cm/min) while decreasing the cumulative evaporation (from 44.4 mm to 31.7 mm). Considering the cumulative infiltration, infiltration rate and evapotranspiration characteristics, an optimized polymer application rate of 0.27% at a mixing depth of 0–50 cm was recommended for efficient soil moisture management. This study highlights the potential of green algae-derived biodegradable polymers as a win–win strategy for achieving waste alleviation of water scarcity in drylands, particularly for maize and wheat cultivation in northern China.

Interannual variation in evapotranspiration in an urban forest reserve with respect to drought

IntroductionA warming global climate is expected to perturb the hydrological cycle, resulting in deviations in both frequency and duration of drought and thus being hypothesized to lead to interannual variation in evapotranspiration (ET). Interannual variation in ET in urban forest ecosystems in response to drought remains poorly understood.MethodsHere, ET in an urban forest reserve in the megalopolis of Beijing was investigated using eddy-covariance measurements collected over six consecutive years (2012–2017).ResultsThe mean annual cumulative ET was 462 ± 83mm (±first standard deviation), with a coefficient of variation of 18%. Interannual variation in both annual and monthly ET was shown to be largely controlled by canopy conductance (gs), affected by environmental factors. The main factors affecting interannual variation in monthly ET varied seasonally, namely, soil volumetric water content (VWC) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in spring, precipitation and soil temperature in summer, and VWC and net radiation (Rn) in autumn. Interannual variation in annual ET was driven largely by spring and mid-summer droughts induced by insufficient precipitation during the non-growing and mid-growing seasons, respectively. Spring drought reduced annual ET by restricting leafing out, shortening growing season length (GSL), and reducing the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The summer drought reduced annual ET by reducing stomatal conductance.Discussion and conclusionResults from this study point to the importance of precipitation timing and volume and the soil moisture carry-over effect in controlling interannual variation in ecosystem ET. Irrigation during the early spring and mid-summer is viewed as a practical management measure for sustaining growth and better ecosystem services in urban forests in Northern China.

Superconducting Gravimeters: A Novel Tool for Validating Remote Sensing Evapotranspiration Products

The practical utility of remote sensing techniques depends on their validation with ground-truth data. Validation requires similar spatial-temporal scales for ground measurements and remote sensing resolution. Evapotranspiration (ET) estimates are commonly compared to weighing lysimeter data, which provide accurate but localized measurements. To address this limitation, we propose the use of superconducting gravimeters (SGs) to obtain ground-truth ET data at larger spatial scales. SGs measure gravity acceleration with high resolution (tenths of nm s−2) within a few hundred meters. Similar to lysimeters, gravimeters provide direct estimates of water mass changes to determine ET without disturbing the soil. To demonstrate the practical applicability of SG data, we conducted a case study in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina (Lat: −34.87, Lon: −58.14). We estimated cumulative ET values for 8-day and monthly intervals using gravity and precipitation data from the study site. Comparing these values with Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-based ET products (MOD16A2), we found a very good agreement at the monthly scale, with an RMSE of 32.6 mm month−1 (1.1 mm day−1). This study represents a step forward in the use of SGs for hydrogeological applications. The future development of lighter and smaller gravimeters is expected to further expand their use.

The Influence of the Osmotic Potential on Evapotranspiration

Climate change is expected to affect the quality of soil and water, resulting in a significant impact on soil water balance in various regions around the world. Soil water potential plays a significant role in influencing evapotranspiration (ET), which is a crucial component of the soil water balance. The matric potential and the osmotic potential are the main components of the soil water potential. The osmotic potential is particularly important in dry soils, salt-affected soils, coastal lands, or when low-quality water is utilized for irrigation. Despite its importance, the impact of osmotic potential on ET has not been well-studied compared to other factors. Therefore, we conducted a study to investigate the impact of osmotic potential on ET from small-scale lab lysimeters planted with grass and equipped with scales and data loggers connected to computers. To create different osmotic potential levels, we irrigated the lysimeters with two different water qualities: distilled water and 4.79 dS.m−1 NaCl solution. The lysimeters were kept in well-watered conditions, and daily ET was monitored. Our results indicate a strong correlation between osmotic potential and ET. After three months of applying the treatments, the lysimeters with lower osmotic potential had a 39% reduction in cumulative ET compared to those irrigated with distilled water. Moreover, the osmotic stress affected plant health, leading to a notable decrease in the leaf area index and exerting a significant influence on evapotranspiration partitioning components, including transpiration and evaporation.

Decision Support Tool to Predict Panicle Initiation in Aerobic Rice

Aerobic rice cultivation offers the potential to reduce irrigated water use. A multitude of challenges, such as cold sterility, drought stress, and labor shortages, limit its adoption in temperate rice-growing regions. Increasing the duration and extent of soil moisture tension between irrigation events has been demonstrated to slow crop development. Delaying panicle initiation (PI) beyond the optimal window can expose rice to cold nighttime temperatures during the cold sensitive early pollen microspore, severely reducing yield. Tools to assist Australian temperate farmers and researchers in the irrigation management of aerobic rice to ensure PI occurs during the optimal window do not yet exist. Using data collected from an aerobic rice experiment conducted in temperate Australia in 2020–2021 and 2021–2022, a predictive model was built to assist in forecasting PI based on the timing of irrigation. Estimation of the area on an hourly basis of the cumulative evapotranspiration with rainfall subtracted from pre-emergent irrigation to PI, defined as the irrigation deficit integral, was used to account for the frequency, duration, and extent of soil moisture deficit between irrigation events. The relationship between the irrigation deficit integral and the number of days from pre-emergent irrigation to PI (R2 = 0.91) was used to build a model to predict PI with a root mean square error of 1.8 days for the validating data set. Furthermore, an example is provided of how the model can be used as a decision support tool to assist researchers and growers to schedule irrigation of aerobic rice to ensure PI occurs in a timely manner. This will increase the likelihood of high-yielding aerobic rice and may enhance the adoption of water-saving rice cultivation.

Surface energy partitioning and evapotranspiration in a Pinus tabuliformis plantation in Northeast China.

Examining the land-atmosphere interaction in vegetation rehabilitation areas is important for better understanding of land surface processes affected by human activities. In this study, energy flux observations were used to investigate surface energy partitioning and evapotranspiration (ET) in a Pinus tabuliformis plantation in Northeast China in 2020 and 2021. The sensible heat flux (H) was the dominant component of Rn, and the ratio of H to the latent heat flux was higher than 1 at all growth stages. The two most important factors influencing the midday evaporative fraction and daily ET were the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and soil water content at 10cm depth (SWC10). Cumulative precipitation (P) minus ET was 62.83 and 239.90mm in 2020 (annual P of 435.2mm) and 2021 (annual P of 632.8mm), respectively. The midday Priestley-Taylor coefficient (α), surface conductance (gs), and decoupling coefficient increased gradually from the onset of the mid-growing stage and decreased from the later growing stage. Midday α and gs increased with NDVI and SWC10 increasing until the NDVI (0.5) and SWC10 (0.17 mm3 mm-3) thresholds were reached, respectively. Midday α and gs were significantly influenced by vapor pressure deficit below 3 kPa, and the threshold value of midday gs was approximately 12mm s-1. In conclusion, this Pinus tabuliformis plantation regulated surface energy partitioning properly, and left a part of P for surface runoff and groundwater recharge in the semiarid region of Northeast China.

Estimation of Actual Evapotranspiration Using Satellite-Based Surface Energy Balance Derived from Landsat Imagery in Northern Thailand

In this study, satellite-based measures of surface energy balance and the mapping evapotranspiration at high resolution with internalized calibration (METRIC) from Landsat imagery were used to estimate the spatiotemporal distribution of actual evapotranspiration (ETa) in northern Thailand, constituting a procedure that has rarely been performed in southeast Asia. Subsequently, we compared the ETa obtained from METRIC with that calculated using the FAO-56 dual-crop coefficient method via the SIMDualKc software and found a strong correlation. An assessment of the accuracy of all the sample plots revealed the R2, Root-Mean-Square Error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE) values to be 0.830, 0.730, and 0.575 mm d−1, respectively. Differences in the cumulative ETa values derived from SIMDualKc and METRIC ranged in magnitude from 0.93–3.57% for rice and 3.08–7.99% for longan. The ETa values for forestland and waterbodies were higher than those for agricultural areas and areas with other forms of land use. The spatiotemporal distribution of the seasonal ETa during the dry season was consistent with the climate, vegetation, and anthropogenic activity. Thus, our results indicate that METRIC is a reliable tool for estimating ETa for water resource management under different environmental conditions and improving water use efficiency over large areas.

Influence of vegetation type and climatological conditions on evapotranspiration from extensive green roofs

Evapotranspiration (ET) is the key hydrologic process governing the capacity of a green roof to retain rainfall as it regenerates available water storage space in the green roof substrate (soil) between rainfall events. In this field study, the impact of climatological conditions, vegetation type, and substrate depth on ET rates were evaluated from experimental, modular extensive green roofs installed in three climate regions in Canada: Calgary AB (Prairies), London ON (Great Lakes/St. Lawrence), and Halifax NS (Atlantic/ Maritime). Daily ET rates and cumulative ET over two field seasons were quantified for two substrate depths (10 and 15 cm), substrate only treatments (no vegetation), and four vegetation treatments (monoculture treatments of Sedum spurium, Sporobolus heterolepis, and Aquilegia canadensis, and a mixed species treatment consisting of the three aforementioned species). 73 %, 67 % and 33 % of the cumulative rainfall was returned to the atmosphere via ET over the two field seasons in Calgary, London and Halifax, respectively. Importantly, ET rates were shown to be a strong function of substrate moisture content as well as atmospheric forcing with the relative importance of each varying between the different cities. ET rates were typically greater in the mixed species treatment in comparison to the three monoculture treatments (Sedum spurium, Sporobolus heterolepis, and Aquilegia canadensis) and for deeper substrate depths, although ET rate enhancement with substrate depth was comparatively small. This study provides valuable insights on the impact of climatological conditions and green roof design parameters (i.e., vegetation type and substrate depth) on ET rates.

Prediction of maize crop coefficient from UAV multisensor remote sensing using machine learning methods

In the upcoming irrigation management in agricultural production, accurate mapping of crop water consumption with a high spatial and temporal resolution at a farm scale is needed. In this study, we developed models for crop coefficients (Kc) estimation using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing and machine learning (ML) techniques for irrigated maize in a semi-arid region in Northwest China. Kc values were calculated using a procedure given in FAO56 manual using field measurements. Multispectral vegetation indices (VIs), vegetation fraction (VF), thermal-based VIs, and texture information (TI) were derived from UAV-based multispectral, RGB, and thermal infrared imagery, respectively. These remotely sensed variables and their combinations were used to develop prediction models using six ML algorithms (linear regression-LR, polynomial regression-PR, exponential regression-ER, random forest regression-RFR, support vector regression-SVR, and deep neural network-DNN). Among these models, the RFR with the highest accuracy (R2 = 0.69, RMSE = 0.1019) was recommended to estimate maize Kc. The multispectral and thermal-based VIs and texture of the near-infrared band had greater contributions than RGB-based VF and TI in the Kc-RFR model under different irrigation treatments. Furthermore, the maize Kc-RFR prediction model had high accuracy in estimating cumulative evapotranspiration (R2 = 0.89, RMSE = 15.0 mm/stage) during different growth stages and daily soil water content (R2 = 0.85, RMSE = 0.0089 m3/m3) in the root zone. These results show that the integration of UAV remote sensing and ML provides a promising tool to help farmers make decisions using timely mapped crop water consumption, especially under water shortages or drought conditions.

Simulating the hydrological impacts of land use conversion from annual crop to perennial forage in the Canadian Prairies using the Cold Regions Hydrological Modelling platform

Abstract. The Red River is one of the largest contributing sources of discharge and nutrients to the world's 10th largest freshwater lake, Lake Winnipeg. Conversion of large areas of annual cropland to perennial forage has been proposed as a strategy to reduce both flooding and nutrient export to Lake Winnipeg. Such reductions could occur either via a reduction in the concentration of nutrients in runoff or through changes in the basin-scale hydrology, resulting in a lower water yield and the concomitant export of nutrients. This study assessed the latter mechanism by using the physically based Cold Regions Hydrological Modelling platform to examine the hydrological impacts of land use conversion from annual crops to perennial forage in a subbasin of the La Salle River basin in Canada. This basin is a typical agricultural subbasin in the Red River Valley, characterised by flat topography, clay soils, and a cold subhumid, continental climate. Long-term simulations (1992–2013) of the major components of water balance were compared between canola and smooth bromegrass, representing a conversion from annual cropping systems to perennial forage. An uncertainty framework was used to represent a range of fall soil saturation status (0 % to 70 %), which governs the infiltration to frozen soil in the subsequent spring. The model simulations indicated that, on average, there was a 36.5 ± 6.6 % (36.5 ± 7.2 mm) reduction in annual cumulative discharge and a 29.9 ± 16.3 % (2.6 ± 1.6 m3 s−1) reduction in annual peak discharge due to forage conversion over the assessed period. These reductions were driven by reduced overland flow 52.9 ± 12.8 % (28.8 ± 10.1 mm), increased peak snowpack (8.1 ± 1.5 %, 7.8 ± 1.6 mm), and enhanced infiltration to frozen soils (66.7 ± 7.7 %, 141.5 ± 15.2 mm). Higher cumulative evapotranspiration (ET) from perennial forage (34.5 ± 0.9 %, 94.1 ± 2.5 mm) was also predicted by the simulations. Overall, daily soil moisture under perennial forage was 18.0 % (57.2 ± 1.2 mm) higher than that of crop simulation, likely due to the higher snow water equivalent (SWE) and enhanced infiltration. However, the impact of forage conversion on daily soil moisture varied interannually. Soil moisture under perennial forage stands could be either higher or lower than that of annual crops, depending on antecedent spring snowmelt infiltration volumes.

Soil Management and Microclimate Effects on Ecosystem Evapotranspiration of Winter Wheat–Soybean Cropping in Northern Alabama

Nearly all the current winter wheat–soybean cropping systems occurring in the southeastern United States (SE) region are rainfed, as such, precipitation (P) underpins energy partitioning. We investigated, using the eddy covariance technique, the seasonal and interannual variability and rate and trend of energy partitioning, i.e., sensible and evapotranspiration (ET), for rainfed soybean and winter wheat cover cropping at Winfred Thomas Agricultural Research Station (WTARS) in Hazel Green, Alabama. Yearlong cumulative ET of 493, 743, and 746 mm during 2007, 2008, and 2009 relative to cumulative precipitation of 567, 1280, and 1356 mm y−1 resulted in a higher mean ET/P ratio of 0.87, in 2007, medium 0.58 in 2008, and lowest 0.55 in 2009. Mean daily ET for the cover crop and soybean ranged between 1.70 and 2.44 mm d−1 and 1.82 to 2.83 mm d−1, respectively. Overall, our findings suggest total and seasonal precipitation distribution were major controlling factors in the partitioning of the energy and water budgets. This study provides evidence that changes in rainfall frequency and intensity in the SE will likely alter the regional croplands hydrology with implications on water resource management decisions in rainfed agriculture.

Dynamics and environmental controls of evapotranspiration for typical alpine meadow in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau

To understand the water, energy, and carbon cycles in the Tibetan Plateau (TP), it is essential to estimate seasonal and inter-annual variations in energy fluxes and evapotranspiration (ET) for alpine meadow ecosystems. The multiyear (2014–2019) energy fluxes and ET, for a typical alpine meadow at Arou station (northeastern TP), and their environmental and biophysical controls were evaluated using the eddy covariance method in this study. Latent heat flux (LE) was the dominant component of energy consumption during the growing season, whereas sensible heat flux (H) dominated energy partitioning during the non-growing season. H showed the opposite trend to LE, while the seasonal variation of soil heat flux (G) was small. The daily ET was primarily controlled by the available energy on the seasonal scale. Soil water content (SWC) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) displayed secondary effects on ET during the non-growing and growing seasons, respectively. The inter-annual ET was relatively stable, ranging from 562.6 to 661.9 mm (coefficient of variation; CV = 7.4 %); this was slightly higher than the annual precipitation despite large variations in inter-annual precipitation (CV = 19.9 %) and was most likely due to snow and frozen ground melting. The cumulative ET in the growing season was about 77 % of the annual ET. There was a nonlinear increase in the daily Priestley–Taylor coefficient (α = ET/ETeq, where ETeq is the equilibrium evaporation) with an increase in bulk surface conductance (gc), which was insensitive to increases in gc that exceeded 15 mm s−1. There was a good relationship between gc and NDVI. This study provides insights into the driving mechanisms of long-term variations in the energy partitioning and biophysical controls on ET in alpine meadow ecosystems.
