CULTURAL VALUE ANALYSIS AT MADRASAH ALIYAH TAHFIDZ AL-QUR'AN ENVIRONMENT

This study aims to analyze the role of culture at Madrasah Aliyah Tahfidz Al-Qur'an Pesanggaran Banyuwangi in an effort to understand the cultural values in shaping student character and maintaining the sustainability of local culture. The research method used was qualitative by conducting in-depth interviews with school principals, teachers, administrative staff, and students. The interview results showed that the madrasa has a strong commitment to maintaining and strengthening cultural values in the educational environment, such as honesty, hard work, social awareness, and respect for local traditions. The main findings included the integration of cultural values in learning, the active role of all stakeholders in promoting cultural values, and students’ awareness of the importance of local culture The main challenge faced was the influence of globalization and technology which could divert students’ attention from local cultural values. Therefore, continuous efforts are needed to promote cultural values and increase students’ understanding and appreciation of local culture. This study contributes to an understandings of the role of culture in education and shows how an educational institution can become an agent for the maintenance and development of local culture.

Stakeholder communication framework for successful implementation of community-based renewable energy projects

The implementation of community-based renewable energy projects demands effective stakeholder communication to ensure project sustainability, community acceptance, and overall success. This review proposes a strategic framework for communicating with diverse stakeholders, including local communities, government agencies, project developers, and non-governmental organizations. The framework emphasizes transparency, trust-building, and engagement as core principles to address the unique challenges and requirements of community-based renewable energy initiatives. Key components include identifying relevant stakeholders, establishing clear communication objectives, and selecting appropriate channels for tailored, ongoing dialogue. First, the framework outlines the identification process of key stakeholders, considering their roles, influence, and interests in the project. This involves categorizing stakeholders into primary (directly impacted) and secondary (indirectly impacted) groups, which enables targeted engagement efforts. Next, the framework recommends diverse communication channels, such as community meetings, social media platforms, local radio, and informational workshops. These channels are chosen based on accessibility, stakeholder preferences, and cultural appropriateness, ensuring messages reach all stakeholders effectively. The framework also includes strategic engagement tactics to enhance community participation, including participatory planning sessions, regular feedback loops, and transparent reporting on project milestones and impacts. By fostering continuous interaction, the project team can build and sustain trust, helping to alleviate concerns and gain community support. Moreover, the framework advocates for the inclusion of culturally relevant communication approaches that respect local values and practices, further strengthening stakeholder relationships. Implementing this communication framework is expected to enhance transparency, cultivate trust, and improve community buy-in, ultimately driving the success and long-term sustainability of community-based renewable energy projects. This approach aligns stakeholder interests, mitigates risks of opposition, and promotes shared ownership, facilitating smoother project execution. By engaging stakeholders meaningfully, community-based renewable energy initiatives can achieve greater resilience and acceptance, contributing to the broader goals of energy transition and environmental sustainability.

Applications of Vedic Mathematics in Computer Science

The convergence of ancient wisdom and modern computation is an intriguing frontier explored in this research paper, which investigates the potential application of Vedic Mathematics in the domain of Computer Science. Vedic Mathematics, originating from ancient Indian texts known as the Vedas, offers a distinct approach to mathematical problem - solving that emphasizes mental agility, pattern recognition, and elegant algorithms. Effectiveness of a Nutrition Counseling Intervention on Food Consumption, According to the Degree of Processing: A Community-Based Non-Randomized Trial of Quilombola Communities in South Brazil

ObjectivesTo evaluate the effectiveness of a nutrition counseling intervention on food consumption according to the Nova classification that reflects levels of food processing.MethodsControlled community trial was conducted in quilombola communities in the South of Brazil. Four communities were allocated to the control group (CG) and the intervention group (IG), two communities comprised each group. A total of 158 individuals (CG = 87; IG = 68) were included in the study. The intervention consisted of six theoretical and practical workshops on food and nutrition education, conducted over a 4-month period. We used a 24-hour recall at baseline and another post-intervention.ResultsThere was an increase in the consumption of traditional quilombola food as an effect of the intervention (from 14.5% to 20.7% in the IG, and from 12.7% to 16.0% in the CG, p = 0.05). There was no significant variation in the other Nova food groups according to time and intervention.ConclusionAn increase in traditional quilombola food indicates a resumption of traditional food intake and appreciation of local culture as an effect of this intervention at the community level.Clinical Trial Registration:www.clinicaltrials.gov, identifier NCT02489149.

The article deals with the analysis the interactions of Otherness in world history textbooks for the 7th grade. The 1995 textbook is the first to be published since independence. The interaction of different peoples and the mutual influence of their cultures are revealed, including the Arab Caliphate, the Crusades, and the history of the Eastern states. The author characterizes various methods of studying textbooks of 2007, 2015 and 2020, in particular, the use of content analysis. This allows us to determine how textbook authors reflect the mutual influences and cultural borrowings of representatives of different nations. The textbooks in which the problem of the interaction of Otherness is presented in a thorough and more or less consistent manner are highlighted. At the same time, the author generalizes the conclusion that the presentation of examples of interaction between peoples and cultural borrowings in the text component of the 2020 edition of textbooks to students has decreased. The topic «The Arab Caliphate» is covered by examples from various textbooks that describe the influence of Others on the formation of Arab culture. The author proves the fragmentation of examples of interaction between Othernesses in modern world history textbooks for the 7th grade and the inconsistency of their reflection of the world of differences.

"It Has to Be Culturally Inclusive": Food Distribution Services for Diverse Communities in New York City.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its related economic challenges exacerbated food insecurity across New York State (NYS). Approximately one third of New York City residents reported use of emergency food services in the pandemic's first year and, in 2021, approximately 1 in 10 NYS residents was food insecure, with rates among Hispanic and Black New Yorkers more than double that of White residents. Although these numbers have decreased following the acute phase of the pandemic, disparities by race and ethnicity persist and use of emergency food services remain elevated for New Yorkers born outside of the United States. Despite this, few policies and interventions that aim to improve the charitable and emergency food systems focus on the cultural relevance and appropriateness of foods provided. In 2022, researchers conducted 12 interviews with key stakeholders from organizations and institutions providing food distribution services to culturally diverse New Yorkers to understand barriers and facilitators related to providing culturally appropriate foods and elicit lessons learned and recommendations to inform future programs and policies. Findings from this study indicate that organizations serving diverse communities recognize the importance of providing culturally appropriate food services and make efforts to tailor these services accordingly. However, they face challenges that limit their capacity to offer foods consistent with the dietary needs and preferences of their clients. Additional funding, policies, and support are needed to improve the availability of culturally inclusive food distribution services within the emergency and charitable food systems.

International Students’ Relationship Formation in a Multicultural Setting: A Phenomenological Inquiry

International students who do not build meaningful friendships have psychological and social issues, as well as weak academic and decision-making skills. The study investigated international students' relationship formation in a multicultural setting in the Philippines, using psychoanalytic transference theory and the functional model of friendship formation. Using transcendental phenomenology, audio-recorded one-on-one interviews were conducted with 12 enrolled students from 12 nations. The data was transcribed and analyzed. According to the findings, co-national friendships were favored for psychological and emotional support, as well as the perpetuation of home cultures. Students who favored host-national friendships over multicultural home ties reported higher levels of life satisfaction, fewer social issues, and a greater appreciation for culture. Students who favored host-national connections overcame home ties and had more life satisfaction, fewer social issues, and a greater appreciation for culture and were more likely to marry and work in host nations. Furthermore, friendships enhance one's lifestyle and psychological well-being, provide enjoyment and satisfaction, enhance critical thinking, and reduce stress as well as criminal activity. The implications of the findings were examined.

A methodological framework for sustainable housing for displaced populations

AbstractThis research highlights the role of sustainability aspects focusing on socio-cultural parameters and environmental performance in designing more comfortable and sustainable shelters. Following a two-mixed method approach, on the one hand, a comparative analysis is presented of IKEA Better Shelter, Rwandan Mud-Brick, and Nepali shelters by examining the cultural integration into their design (traditional layouts and shared spaces), their adaptability, and their environmental performance. On the other hand, a qualitative survey determines the level of satisfaction regarding space, comfort, social interaction, and cultural fit among residents. The results show that traditional building methods with the use of local materials, offer high privacy levels, excellent thermal and acoustics comfort, good cultural appropriateness and minimal environmental impact.

Cultural Adaptation and User Satisfaction of an Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioral Program for Depression and Anxiety Among College Students in Two Latin American Countries: Focus Group Study With Potential Users and a Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study With Actual Users.

To scale up mental health care in low-resource settings, digital interventions must consider cultural fit. Despite the findings that culturally adapted digital interventions have greater effectiveness, there is a lack of empirical evidence of interventions that have been culturally adapted or their adaptation documented. This study aimed to document the cultural adaptation of the SilverCloud Health Space from Depression and Anxiety program for university students in Colombia and Mexico and evaluate user satisfaction with the adapted program. A mixed methods process was based on Cultural Sensitivity and Ecological Validity frameworks. In phase 1, the research team added culturally relevant content (eg, expressions, personal stories, photos) for the target population to the intervention. In phase 2, potential users (9 university students) first evaluated the vignettes and photos used throughout the program. We calculated median and modal responses. They then participated in focus groups to evaluate and assess the cultural appropriateness of the materials. Their comments were coded into the 8 dimensions of the Ecological Validity Framework. Phase 3 consisted of choosing the vignettes most highly rated by the potential users and making modifications to the materials based on the student feedback. In the final phase, 765 actual users then engaged with the culturally adapted program and rated their satisfaction with the program. We calculated the percentage of users who agreed or strongly agreed that the modules were interesting, relevant, useful, and helped them attain their goals. The potential users perceived the original vignettes as moderately genuine, or true, which were given median scores between 2.5 and 3 (out of a possible 4) and somewhat identified with the situations presented in the vignettes given median scores between 1.5 and 3. The majority of comments or suggestions for modification concerned language (126/218, 57.5%), followed by concepts (50/218, 22.8%). Much less concerned methods (22/218, 10%), persons (9/218, 4.1%), context (5/218, 2.3%), or content (2/218, 0.9%). There were no comments about metaphors or goals. Intervention materials were modified based on these results. Of the actual users who engaged with the adapted version of the program, 87.7%-96.2% of them agreed or strongly agreed that the modules were interesting, relevant, useful, and helped them to attain their goals. We conclude that the adapted version is satisfactory for this population based on the focus group discussions and the satisfaction scores. Conducting and documenting such cultural adaptations and involving the users in the cultural adaptation process will likely improve the effectiveness of digital mental health interventions in low- and middle-income countries and culturally diverse contexts.

A crisis of authenticity: Becoming entrepreneurial and the quest for “cultural appropriateness” among the Mapuche

AbstractBased on multisite ethnographic work between 2018 and 2020, this article examines entrepreneurship promotion policies developed by the Chilean state directed at Mapuche people. We direct attention to how the notion of authenticity works as a hinge between Mapuche people, historical heritage, nongovernmental organizations, and public policymakers in their promotion of microentrepreneurship as a form of overcoming poverty and achieving full inclusion of Indigenous people in Chilean society. The negotiation processes concerning authenticity bring together people's aspiration to become entrepreneurs as authentic Mapuche and those seeking to initiate a “proper Mapuche business.” Authenticity, its recognition and contestation, appears as a central tenet in the formation of a particular entrepreneurial self that combines entrepreneurs' aspirations for a better life with a simultaneous seeking of an appropriate sense of being Mapuche, with acknowledgment from others. In the process, the meaning of authenticity goes beyond a primordialist understanding of the term, acquiring polysemy and affecting the arena of Indigenous entrepreneurship, as other aspects of contemporary Mapuche lives.

Towards cultural inclusion for older adults from culturally and linguistically diverse communities: A commentary on recent aged care reforms.

Due to the high and increasing number of older people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds in Australia, it is essential to ensure that the upcoming Support at Home program and other new initiatives incorporate culturally responsive aged care provision. Failing to address these challenges perpetuates inequalities in access to quality care for CALD older adults. This paper reviews recent reforms and initiatives in aged care, identifies culturally responsive provisions and proposes new approaches for upcoming reforms that focus on CALD older people and their support networks. We summarise current standards of cultural appropriateness in aged care to identify areas for improvement. There are instructive interactions between cultural responsiveness and standardising or mainstreaming provision in recent aged care policies and initiatives. We argue that culturally adapting the aged care assessments and Support at Home frameworks through co-production collaborations in the Aged Care Data and Digital Strategy (2024-2029) is not just beneficial but necessary. These actions involve (i) developing culturally tailored assessment tools that consider linguistic and cultural factors, such as using bilingual questionnaires and incorporating culturally responsive communication materials, and (ii) incorporating cultural competence training. Implementing these changes, though complex, will enable equitable and inclusive aged care. It involves overcoming language and cultural barriers that impede effective communication and care. We advocate for ongoing testing and evaluation of these approaches to determine their feasibility for integration into digitisation plans within the aged care sector.

Scaling up Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up with Latine families: Implementation processes and effectiveness.

Attachment and BiobehavioralCatch-up (ABC) is an evidence-based early intervention promoting attachment security and self-regulation by enhancing parental sensitivity. When scaling up an evidence-based intervention to the community, it is essential to consider families' preferences and cultural values to ensure cultural appropriateness, while maintaining fidelity to the intervention's core components. In this article, we aimed to test the effectiveness of ABC in improving parental sensitivity when implemented in Spanish at a community level in the USA. The effectiveness of ABC when implemented in Spanish in the community was assessed through pre-post changes in observed parental sensitivity in 79 Latine families with children ages 6 months to 4 years. Parental sensitivity increased from pre- to post-test, with a similar effect size to previous studies (d=.67). Results and practice implications are discussed, highlighting the importance of the support to providers reaching families of diverse origins.

A Narrative Review of the Digital Equity Gap of Apps for Cigarette Smoking Cessation for Persons Living in the Hispanosphere

Abstract Purpose of Review The Hispanosphere is a vast region of the world that has received little attention in the digital health literature. No study to date has examined the availability and quality of publicly available mobile applications (apps) for cigarette smoking cessation in this region. Three coders utilized the American Psychiatry Association (APA)’s Brief App Evaluation Model Screener (Brief-AEM Screener) to evaluate the quality of the label and public-facing screens of smoking cessation apps in Spanish. Availability of apps in the Hispanosphere was compared to availability of apps in the Anglosphere. Recent Findings We identified and reviewed 19 apps in Spanish in Google Play. The median score using the Brief-AEM Screener was 63 out of 100 suggesting generally acceptable app quality and features according to the quality standards for digital health tools proposed by the APA. However, we found (1) notable inaccurate and misleading labelling claims, (2) poor grammar or incomplete translations, and (3) a lack of cultural and linguistic adaptation to countries in the Hispanosphere. Our comparison of smoking cessation apps between the Hispanosphere and the Anglosphere suggested that there is a large digital equity gap between these two regions, with a four to sevenfold gap in app availability. Summary There is a relative shortage of quality and quantity of digital health apps for smoking cessation in the Hispanosphere. To ensure the cultural appropriateness of those digital interventions, it is essential that developers of digital health tools establish community partners in the region prior to developing apps for smoking cessation.

An Analysis of the English Textbook “Bright” Used for the Ninth Grade of MTSN 6 Agam

This research analyzed the English textbook "Bright" used for ninth grade students at MTsN 6 Agam. This study aims to assess how well the textbook is in accordance with the appropriateness of content based on the 2013 curriculum from the National Education Standardization Agency (BSNP). The method used in this research is qualitative content analysis to assess the appropriateness of the English textbook "Bright" used for ninth-grade students at MTsN 6 Agam. Especially focused on comprehensively analyzing the content of the textbook based on standards set by the Education National Standardization Board (BSNP). Data were gathered from the entirety of the "Bright" textbook, supplemented by documentation notes with an English teacher. The researcher served as the primary instrument, ensuring methodological rigor and transparency throughout the study. The analysis involved coding and reduction techniques to identify patterns and themes related to content appropriateness. Findings from the research aimed to provide insights for English teachers, students, textbook writers, and future researchers. The study contributed to the understanding of how well the "Bright" textbook aligned with educational standards and offered recommendations for improving English teaching materials. The research findings indicated that the English textbook "Bright" used at MTsN 6 Agam aligned well with the objectives and curriculum set by BSNP. Data analysis from documentation notes with teachers showed that the textbook generally met the criteria for content appropriateness. While there were minor shortcomings in its ability to supplement other subjects, the "Bright" textbook was deemed relevant, accurate, and inspiring for students. Overall, the textbook portrayed national themes that strengthened pride and appreciation for the nation's culture. This conclusion provides valuable insights for curriculum developers, affirming the suitability of the "Bright" textbook for teaching English at MTsN 6 Agam and advocating for continuous improvement in English education in Indonesia.

The Readability, Understandability, and Suitability of Online Resources for Ostomy Care.

the purpose of this study was to evaluate the content, readability, understandability, and suitability of online resources for patient specific ostomy care. Retrospective cohort study. Online websites for ostomy care designed for patients. Ostomy care websites designed for patients were identified by querying three online search engines. Content areas were established following assessment of all websites by two reviewers. Readability of each website was determined using the Flesch Reading Ease Test and the Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG) index. Understandability was measured using the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT), and suitability was determined using the Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM). Chi-Square and rank sum tests were used to compare these measures across website type and by number of content areas. Twenty-three websites met inclusion criteria; 26.1% were for-profit, 13% were government, 26.1% were academic, and 34.8% were non-profit. Nineteen content areas were identified including themes related to pouching, bathing, physical activity, managing output, lifestyle, mental health, and eating. The median number of content areas covered was 8.5 [interquartile range (IQR) 4-13]. The most common content areas were changing/emptying a pouching system (82.6% of websites), preventing/managing peristomal skin irritation (78.3%), eating (60.9%), and odor management (60.9%). Less than 27% of websites had content on irrigation, blockage/constipation, and body image. Readability scores using the Flesch Reading Ease (mean 58, IQR 54.7-69.5) and SMOG Index (mean 9.1, IQR 7.6-9.9) correlated to a high-school or "fairly difficult" reading level. The mean PEMAT measuring understandability was 80 (IQR 78.9-84.0). The mean SAM score checking for suitability (literacy demand, graphics, layout and type, learning stimulation and motivation and cultural appropriateness) was 55% (IQR 48.4%-61.3%), indicating "adequate material." A greater number of content areas on the websites were associated with worse readability (SMOG and Flesch Reading Ease scores) than websites presenting fewer content areas (P =.001 & P <.001, respectively). We found significant variability in the content, readability, understandability, and suitability of online materials for ostomy care. Websites with more content areas were associated with worse readability.

In this article, I examine Paul Muldoon’s interest in the nineteenth-century Apache leader Mangas Coloradas. The recurrence of this figure in Muldoon’s poetry reflects his well-known fascination with indigenous American history and culture but, I argue, must also be understood in relation to recent debates about cultural appropriation, derogatory place names, and the repatriation of indigenous artifacts and remains. While recognising the sensitive issues at play when Muldoon writes about – and even in the voices of – indigenous American figures, I show how his poems about Mangas Coloradas reveal a complex awareness of the processes by which indigenous names are appropriated by non-indigenous actors, emptied of their content, and turned into commodities of different kinds. These poems also exemplify the poet’s technique of combining the cinematic with what he calls the ‘imharragistic’, or the bleeding of one image into another. Through the dynamic play of images flowing together and cinematic shifts from scene to scene, Muldoon’s Mangas poems ultimately perform a crucial act of self-awareness that invites us to imagine the political and poetic possibilities of ‘semantic repatriation’.
