El Whispering Clouds, Echoing Mountains: A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Gonzalo Ariza’s Lyrical Landscapes

This essay reevaluates the art of Gonzalo Ariza, a twentieth-century Colombian painter renowned for landscapes that merge Eastern and Western traditions. Challenging simplistic categorizations of his oeuvre as an “appropriated Japanese style,” my research argues that Ariza’s vision of landscape transformed into a contemplative attitude towards local Andean highlands after his return from Japan in 1938. It contextualizes the challenges Ariza faced when drawing inspiration from East Asian art amidst mid-twentieth-century modernist currents and political circumstances, shedding light on the critical narratives that marginalized his work and unraveling the complexities of Colombian modernism within a global art discourse. Building upon Warburg's concept of dynamograms to describe “pathos formula” in landscapes, this study argues that Ariza’s work transcends cultural boundaries, which links both traditions through the subtle emotions evoked by cloud-shrouded mountains, eliciting a universal appreciation for nature’s mystical splendor. Through cross-cultural comparison and an ecocritical lens, my essay delves into the interplay of transcultural exchange, nationalist identity, andrepresentations of nature in Ariza’s artworks, revealing his nostalgic proto-environmental consciousness. In doing so, it raises raising questions about the transformative power of landscape art to reflect and influence societal values and perspectives on nature within contemporary dialogues on environmental stewardship and the negotiation of cultural identity through art.

I am in the Homeless Home or I Am Always on the Way Home: Formatting Identity and Transcultural Adaptation Through Ethnic and Host Communication

Abstract This study uses a phenomenological approach and 25 in-depth interviews to better understand ethnic and host communication by Chinese international students in U.S. higher education and the impact of such communication practices on their cultural identity transformation and transcultural adaptation. The research findings reveal that their ethnic communication reflects their dynamic negotiation of cultural identities and their efforts to integrate their original cultural background and their expectations of others to redefine their own cultural identities and communicative behaviors. It also highlights that Chinese students engage in ethnic communication not only for community building and cultural identity reinforcement but also assertively to express themselves and educate others.

Cultural Identity and Intertextual Discourse: A Study of Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu

This study investigates the intricate interplay between intertextuality and discourse in Ken Liu’s evocative short story Paper Menagerie, focusing on cultural identity negotiation and heritage language dynamics. Through qualitative literary analysis involving multiple close readings, thematic coding, comparative contextualization, and detailed interpretation, the interplay between Liu’s masterful integration of multifaceted cultural allusions and the discourse patterns surrounding generational language divides and struggles with self-concept is examined. The analysis reveals how Liu adeptly employs intertextuality through origins, Qingming festivities, and other symbols to create resonance and authenticity in exploring assimilationist tensions, while patterns in the text reinforce acculturative pressures and resulting linguistic barriers faced by immigrants. Ultimately, these layers synergize to reflect deeply on the preservation of identity tensions. As with textual analysis, subjective interpretive constraints persist, limiting generalizability. Further exploration through intertextual threads in Liu’s broader writings could enrich the understanding of his versatile identity while revealing philosophical evolution. The intricate symbiosis between intertextuality and discourse breathes life into this narrative, crystallizing universally relatable experiences through a culturally specific lens. While bittersweet, Liu’s artistry is a poignant reminder that interweaving past and present fosters empathy across paper menageries.

Cultural Crossroads and Subaltern Realities in Diasporic Discourse: Exploring the Sense of Belonging in Lahiri and Mistry’s Narratives

This study examines the theme of cultural navigation and the sense of belonging in Jhumpa Lahiri's novel The Namesake and Rohinton Mistry's A Fine Balance. Focusing on the Indian diaspora, the study meticulously explores the multifaceted dimensions of subalternity embedded in the characters' experiences of cultural displacement, identity negotiation, and socio-economic adversities. This research paper aims to elucidate the complex dynamics of belonging in a diverse and interconnected global community by conducting a comparative analysis of the many ways in which these narratives portray the journeys of people bridging many cultures. In navigating the complex fabric of two separate cultures, this paper explores the challenges, triumphs, and transformations of the protagonists. It investigates the literary techniques employed by Lahiri and Mistry to portray the psychological and emotional aspects of cultural adaptation, illuminating the characters' changing self-perceptions. It also examines how society and family dynamics shape the identities of the characters, highlighting the conflict between the desire for integration and clinging to one's traditional origins. Through a thematic analysis, this study seeks to uncover the authors' perspectives on cultural hybridity, shedding light on the broader implications for individuals striving to reconcile their heritage with the demands of contemporary life. The Impact of Religious Rituals on Cultural Identity: Review of the Relationship between Religious Practices and Cultural Belonging

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of religious rituals on cultural identity- a review of the relationship between religious practices and cultural belonging.
 Methodology: The study adopted a desktop research methodology. Desk research refers to secondary data or that which can be collected without fieldwork. Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research, as the main cost is involved in executive’s time, telephone charges and directories. Thus, the study relied on already published studies, reports and statistics. This secondary data was easily accessed through the online journals and library.
 Findings: The findings revealed that there exists a contextual and methodological gap relating to the impact of religious rituals on cultural identity. Preliminary empirical review demonstrated that religious rituals play a crucial role in the formation, maintenance, and negotiation of cultural identity within diverse religious communities and cultural contexts. Engaging in religious rituals fosters a sense of belonging, strengthens cultural values and traditions, and contributes to the intergenerational transmission of cultural identity. Furthermore, religious rituals serve as symbolic expressions of cultural identity, reinforcing social cohesion and providing individuals with a sense of shared identity and purpose.
 Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The Social Identity theory, Symbolic Interactionism and the Cultural Identity theory may be used to anchor future studies on the impact of religious rituals on cultural identity. The study recommended for foster intergenerational dialogues, promoting of cultural education, facilitation of interfaith exchanges, encouraging of ritual adaptation, supporting of community engagements and making collaborations with cultural organizations.

Reproduction of cultural identities among amalgamated Malay and Javanese families: Enculturation, negotiation, and hybrid identities

This article discusses how the reproduction of cultural identity in amalgamated families among Malay and Javanese in Tanjung Uma Village, Lubuk Baja District, Batam, Indonesia. The Malay and Javanese are ethnic groups that have different cultural characteristics, so various forms of negotiation are needed in the formation of cultural identity among family members. This is qualitative research with case study method, using observation and in-depth interviews with 15 informants. We use theory of location of culture by Homi K Bhabha and Stuart Hall's cultural identity to explain that cultural identity is not something rigid and standard but can be produced and reproduced. The research show that in amalgamated families of Malay and Javanese, there is a negotiation of cultural identity, making an impact on the formation of a hybrid identity in which the various elements of the two cultures adapt to each other. Hybrid identity is a form of cultural identity reproduction, the result of negotiations between the innate cultures of the two parents, as well as the dominant culture prevailing in the location where the family internalizes itself. This cultural negotiation is also the reason for the survival of Malay and Javanese amalgamated families, in the midst of high divorce rates among other ethnic amalgamation marriage in Tanjung Uma.

Identity struggle through the negotiation of cultural identity in the translation of French cultural references into Javanese

Cultural identity negotiations occur not only in cross-cultural communication but also translation acts. The justification that the translation process involved not only two languages but also two different cultural traditions raises awareness of the importance of translation as a means of cross-cultural communication. This study aims to reveal the negotiation of French’s cultural identity in Javanese translation by positioning the Javanese language and culture as ‘self’ and French as ‘others.’ Under descriptive-qualitative research, 433 pairs of French-Javanese narratives from Albert Camus’s 1943 novel L’Étranger and its Javanese translation Wong Njaba’ (2010) translated by Revo Arka Giri Soekatno were used as the objects in this study. Through careful examination, four possibilities emerge as the impact of French cultural identity’s negotiation into Javanese: the target language’s meaning becomes completely equivalent, narrower, broader, or inequivalent to the source culture’s meaning. These possibilities arise from the translator’s consciousness to reduce the level of strangeness that may interfere with the target reader’s concentration and reception. This present study concludes that the translator tends to negotiate semantically two languages within similar semantic vocabularies. Nonetheless, the form is borrowed or negotiated if there is no cultural activity in Javanese similar to French cultural activity. This study contributes to the study of cultural identity by incorporating linguistic and cultural perspectives into translation studies.

International Student-Athletes' Psychological and Sociocultural Adjustment Experiences

International college students face psychosocial adjustment challenges transitioning into college, which may be heightened for international student-athletes (ISAs) who also have to adjust to Division I (DI) athletics. Even so, there are limited articles that synthesize the research on this population. Thus, we sought to fill this gap by examining studies focused on the adjustment experiences of ISAs. A qualitative interpretive meta-synthesis is a method used in social work research to synthesize the findings of qualitative studies (Aguirre & Bolton, 2014). We used qualitative interpretive meta-synthesis to conduct an exhaustive search of the literature, construct themes, and synthesize themes of qualitative research regarding ISAs and their adjustment experiences. We identified 11 articles with three overarching themes: (a) acculturative stress, (b) adjustment to the college experience, and (c) adjustment to athletics in the United States. Findings suggest ISAs experience not only transitional stress related to their identities as a student and as an athlete but also from their acculturation experiences. Thus, we propose ISAs transitioning to college experience a ternary-or three way-role negotiation of student identity, athlete identity, and cultural identity. Social workers employed at Division I institutions and within Division I athletic departments have the opportunity to advocate for the needs of this population.

Negosiasi Identitas Budaya Jepang dalam Novel Tenki No Ko dan Terjemahannya dalam Bahasa Indonesia

The translator as a negotiator must ensure that all information contained in the source language text is conveyed to the target language reader. Because translation can be a way to overcome intercultural gaps. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to find the formulation of the translation of Japanese cultural terms that have been negotiated in Indonesian translation. The material objects of this research were the Japanese novel 'Tenki No Ko' and its Indonesian translation 'Weathering With You’. The frameworks for this study were Newmark's cultural terms categorizations, Eco's idea of negotiation, and Baker's strategies for culture-specific items. This study revealed that the negotiation of Japanese cultural identity can be identified and formulated through the translation strategy used by the translator. The strategies were using general words, omissions, paraphrasing with related words, using neutral words, and using unrelated words.

Shared Fairness Perceptions of Chinese Subordinates and German Supervisors

Enriching organizational justice literature with insights from cultural identity negotiation theory, our explorative, qualitative study develops an evidence-based model illuminating how culturally diverse subordinates and supervisors can achieve through their cross-cultural interactions shared fairness perceptions. Our analysis is based on a complex research design comprising in total 133 interviews in China and in Germany from Chinese subordinates of German supervisors, German subordinates of Chinese supervisors, Chinese supervisors of German subordinates and from German supervisors of Chinese subordinates. As a result of our empirically induced theorizing, we came to understand the centrality of inter-linked cultural identity negotiation processes. Only those subordinates and supervisors who were willing and able to engage in such processes, once they came into contact with the other respective party, succeeded in arriving at the approximation of previously more distinct fairness perceptions and ultimately to a partially shared understanding of fairness. In addition, we found various moderating factors influencing the cultural identity negotiation processes. From these factors cultural preservation, i.e., the degree to which the subordinates and supervisors cling to their original cultural identity, was by far the most important one.

This music sounds as if ´was coming from afar. From the world of yesterday. Franz Schubert cuts and paste a popular dance tune – the Austrian Landler – in his advanced string quartet as a sounding symbol of that loss of immediacy that seems to be the an indispensable part of the modern condition. Here, I will start my contribution to our conference’s discussion of the issue of ‘identity of music between authenticity and contemporarity’. The Landler’s dreamlike evocation of a pre-modern rural world where ‘such things as home, nature and immediate life’ still are not uprooted by modernity here stands for the feeling of loss of authenticity that I claim to be ‘inscribed in modernity’. By this, I signal that I focus on a particular aspect of the authenticity debate. What I particularly have in mind is music’s contribution to the discussion of how we in the modern world access our pasts and how our views to the past take part in the negotiation of modern cultural identities

Impact of Cultural Identity Negotiation on Bridging Activities of Highly Qualified Migrants

Based on 130 semi structured interviews, we looked at the interplay between identity and bridging skills of the first and second generation highly qualified migrants. Expanding current conceptualizations, we have illustrated that first generation migrants also develop a plural identity with the increase of stay in their receiving cultures, and second generation migrants can assess themselves as complete cultural members of their mainstream societies along with the gain of a higher socio-economic status and in order to increase their self-esteem. First generation migrants with both ethnic and plural identities, and second generation migrants with a mainstream identity have either deficient mainstream language knowledge or insufficient ethnic cultural internalization, which impede their bridging activities. Second generation migrants with a plural identity seem to be the ideal culture and language bridging agents due to their balanced embeddedness in their ethnic and mainstream backgrounds. Our study confirms the need to make a generational distinction upon looking into the identities and bridging skills of migrants. We have thus provided a more nuanced understanding of migrant identity processes and skill use, therefore positioning ourselves at the crossroad between international migration and international business research.

Acculturation and attitudes toward code-switching: A bidimensional framework.

Aims and objectives:Code-switching, the spontaneous switching from one language to another within a single speech event, is often performed by bilinguals who have mastered a communicative competence in two languages. It is also a social strategy – using linguistic cues as a means to index social categories and group solidarity. Code-switching is, therefore, linked to attitudes, seen as a reflection of the speaker and their values and identities. Traditionally perceived negatively, attitudes toward code-switching have been shown to be acceptable in certain cases, such as in multilingual contexts. However, it has yet to be determined empirically whether attitudes toward code-switching are associated with individual social characteristics, including cultural identity and identity negotiation. Adopting the bidimensional model of acculturation, the goal of the study was to investigate the relationships among cultural identity and code-switching attitudes. Specifically, we sought to examine whether the bidimensional framework can be used to characterize and distinguish biculturals and whether such distinctions result in differences in code-switching attitudes and other related factors.Data and analysis:Cantonese-English bilinguals (n = 67) reported their language background and completed questionnaires relating to identity and code-switching.Findings:The findings suggest the bidimensional model was successful in classifying biculturals versus non-biculturals and, additionally, that biculturals could be differentiated according to their strength of cultural identification, which we designated as strong biculturals, Canadian-oriented biculturals, Chinese-oriented biculturals, and weak biculturals. Findings also revealed significant group differences in code-switching attitudes and other factors, such as code-switching comfort and preference, among the bicultural subgroups.Implications:The study supports the hypothesis that code-switching is linked to bicultural identity. The results conclude that a more nuanced classification of biculturals is meaningful, as individual differences in cultural identification among biculturals are linked to significant differences in code-switching comfort, code-switching preference, code-switching attitudes, and multicultural attitudes.

Cultural Identity Negotiation of Javanese-Muslim Settlers with Indigenous Balinese-Hindus: A Study of Intercultural Communication Strategies

This article explores communication strategies in negotiating the cultural identity of Javanese-Muslims as immigrant communities in Bali. Identity negotiation theory guides this article into the construction of intercultural communication strategies. The qualitative approach is used to analyze the negotiation process between the identity that occurs, what elements of identity are involved, as well as what identity factors have an impact on communication in a harmonious life, especially among the immigrant population (Java-Muslim) and indigenous people (Bali-Hindu) in Wanasari Hamlet, Denpasar City, Bali. The results of this study showed the opportunity for each group of residents to teach their own beliefs, as well as put forward equality over differences in the creation of harmonious community life.

Isotopy as a Tool for the Analysis of Comics in Translation: The Italian ‘Rip-Off’ of Gilbert Shelton’s Freak Brothers

This article examines a corpus of selected Italian translations of Gilbert Shelton's underground comic strip The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (initially collected in 13 issues by Rip Off Press, 1971–1997) using isotopies as a key tool in the analysis of comics in translation. After discussing the role and potential applications of isotopies (cf. Bertrand 2000; Greimas 1966b; Rastier 1972; Greimas and Courtés 1979), we argue that the act of translating comics inherently entails the selection, magnification, narcotization, and even erasure of the isotopies of the source text as well as the creation of new ones belonging exclusively to the target culture. Subsequently, Shelton’s works are analyzed as an example of politically-committed, subversive social satire, which can be considered the epitome of the 1960–70s’ US-countercultural zeitgeist. In Italy, Shelton’s comic strips received multiple translations from both alternative, militant publishers (Arcana and Stampa Alternativa) and mainstream houses (Mondadori and Comicon). This allows for a diachronic comparison of multiple translations of the same comics, each showing the signs of changing translational approaches, editorial policies, and target audiences. Finally, the contrastive analysis of original works and translations may provide insight into the negotiation and communication of cultural, social, and political identities through the medium of comics. In this respect, we employ a semiotic approach that disentangles the ideological and culture-bound premises and the hermeneutic frames that intervene in translating comics of such vital (counter-)cultural value as Shelton's Freak Brothers.

Gendered Protests Projecting Women’s Voices of ‘Otherness’ through Songs of [i]ukuthombisa[/i] in Zulu Social Discourse

In the Zulu patriarchal society, women have always found ways to express themselves in song. The language used in ukuthombisa songs mainly addresses the issues of gender and power in traditional society. Young maidens use these songs to negotiate their ethnic and gender identities. They forge their cultural roles as they reach puberty, when making the transition from childhood to adulthood. This article examines the power of song and the effectiveness of the choice by young maidens to use profanity and linguistic taboos to navigate their way in this discourse. These songs denounce promiscuous male behavior and the way it destroys the innocence of young virgins. In attempting to take back power from men, young maidens hurl insults at the penis for what it does to destroy the purity of the vagina. This article investigates how sexual morality in Zulu social discourse, and the negotiation of cultural and gender identities, has become an affirmation of womanhood and of the purity of virginal bodies. Negotiation of native linguistic ideology and cultural identities in English learning: a cultural schema perspective

ABSTRACT Despite the proven benefits of combining target language education with corresponding cultural studies, little is known about the impact of infusing and integrating native culture and ideology into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education. Few studies focus on how Chinese English language learners (ELLs) negotiate multifaceted identities in English classes in which native oriental culture and philosophical values are deeply embedded. Situated within a tertiary-level English classroom located in southeastern China, this article explores how Chinese ELLs negotiate linguistic ideology and construct cultural identity during their English learning. Qualitative analysis of the data reveals that students experience cultural capital enrichment with an increasing capability to tell Chinese stories worldwide in English, while at the same time experiencing a clash of ideological struggles and multilayered identity construction. The findings have significant implications for understanding the role of cultural capital, linguistic ideology, and identity construction in EFL teaching and learning, and for the global spread of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).

It draws on individual and focus group interview data from a broader study that investigated negotiation of cultural identities of recently arrived former refugees. The key finding is that, although all participants had undergone multiple prior migrations, moving to a dominant white society was much more difficult. The study found that, in everyday life, the visible difference, markedly their Black skin, brought a reaction, both positive and negative, indicating the predominant assumption that Australia still sees itself as a ‘white space’. The article examines how Australia's retreat from multiculturalism has created greater delineation between what is seen as the ‘white Anglo-Celtic core’ and others on the ‘periphery’ [Stratton, J. Rethinking time and lifestyle migration: Multiple temporalities, identity formation, and post‐migration life of Chinese Houniao

This paper examines the multiple temporalities of lifestyle migration through the study of the Houniao (“snowbirds”), mostly retirees from northern China. It attends to their seasonal migration to Sanya and Haikou, and explores the reconstruction of everyday practices, experience, and identities in association with their perceptions of past, present, and future. Personal biographies and national socio‐economic transformation over time encourage them to strike a balance between frugality and quality of life, and raise their generational awareness. The post‐migration life and identities of the “snowbirds” are also affected by their future aspirations and active ageing practices. The production of the Houniao's present life is further examined in relation to their perceptions of everyday rhythms and the negotiation of cultural and regional identities. This paper underlines the centrality of time in (lifestyle) migration. It offers insight into the time‐spaces and complexity of lifestyle migration and changing elderly life in modern China.
