Partial skull and endocranial cast of the ankylosaurian dinosaur Hungarosaurus from the Late Cretaceous of Hungary: implications for locomotion

A partial skull of ankylosaur from the Upper Cretaceous (Santonian) Csehbanya Formation in Iharkut and the endocranial cast taken from it are described. The morphology of the exoccipital, the elongated 'neck' region of the basioccipital, the shape of the occipital condyle, and the different flexure of the medulla relative to the forebrain unambiguously differentiate this specimen from the basicranium of Struthiosaurus, so it is assigned to Hungarosaurus sp. Whereas the endocranial cast reflects a brain generally similar to those of other ankylosaurs, the dorsally hypertrophied cerebellum (also present is Struthiosaurus transylvanicus) is quite unusual within the group suggesting a more sophisticated cerebral coordination of posture and movement, and perhaps a more cursorial locomotary habit than predicted for other ankylosaurs.

Palynomorphs of the Normapolles group and related plant mesofossils from the Iharkút vertebrate site, Bakony Mountains (Hungary)

Abstract Palynological and paleobotanical investigation of bonebeds and other strata of the Csehbanya Formation from the vertebrate locality at Iharkut (Bakony Mts, Hungary) reveals well-preserved Santonian palynological assemblages dominated by the Normapolles group, with a minor component consisting of other angiosperm pollen, some gymnosperm pollen, and spores. Eleven species of Normapolles-type pollen grains belonging to seven genera and fruit remains of a new taxon, Sphaeracostata barbackae gen. et sp. nov., are described. The new species is very abundant in the material, represented by ca. 1000 specimens. The genus Caryanthus Friis and an unnamed form previously reported from Haţeg by Lindfors et al. (2010) are also present. Plants producing Normapolles-type pollen grains diversified during the Late Cretaceous, with a bloom in the Santonian. A review of Late Cretaceous fossil birds from Hungary

AbstractWe review the previously described Late Cretaceous (Santonian) bird remains from the Csehbánya Formation in the Bakony Mountains of Hungary, augmenting initial work by Ősi (2008), and add a number of newly collected fossils. All together, the eight fossil specimens so far collected from this site are important to our understanding of avian evolution because they document a large range of taxon body sizes from at least one major lineage (Enantiornithes) and come from a critically undersampled time period in the Cretaceous. Globally, very little fossil bird material has been collected from the middle stages of the Late Cretaceous, the Coniacian and Santonian; most known taxa are either Early Cretaceous (ca. 120 Ma) in age or are from the terminal Campanian and Maastrichtian (ca. 70–65 Ma). Indeed, one of the Csehbánya Formation fossil birds is recognized as a new taxon of large enantiornithine, an avisaurid apparently similar in its largely unfused foot morphology to the Argentine Soroavisaurus and to the North American Avisaurus. The Central European records reviewed in this paper highlight the wide distribution of some Late Cretaceous fossil birds, particularly avisaurid enantiornithines, and lead us to a brief discussion of avian biogeography at the end of the Mesozoic. The first dinosaur remains from the Upper Cretaceous of Hungary (Csehbánya Formation, Bakony Mts)

The first dinosaur remains are described from the Upper Cretaceous (Santonian) Csehbanya Formation, Iharkut, Bakony Mts, Hungary. Eight teeth of herbivorous dinosaurs (Rhabdodontidae indet. Nodosauridae indet.) and four teeth belonging to Theropoda indet. are presented. There are also hundreds of fish, frog, turtle and crocodile bones and teeth embedded in fluvial sand of an alluvial plain. Palaeobiogeographic connections towards Provence, the eastern Alps, and southern Carpathians indicate that the Adriatic microplate bearing the fossiliferous succession was an island temporarily connected to the European continent during Late Cretaceous time.
