An integrated computation framework for predicting mechanical performance of single-phase alloys manufactured using laser powder bed fusion: A case study of CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy

Establishing a process-structure-property (PSP) relationship is crucial for understanding and optimizing the mechanical properties of components via laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing (AM). However, the parameters pertinent to the PSP relationship are encapsulated in a “black box” with a high dimension, resulting in relying on trial-and-error approaches to elucidate hidden associations becoming impracticable, while the acquisition of microscopic data proves financially burdensome. Thus this paper presents an integrated computation framework based on machine learning (ML) for predicting the tensile yield strengths and post-yield hardening rates of single-phase alloys fabricated through L-PBF, for efficient process optimization purposes. Research herein focuses on single-phase alloys to be built via L-PBF, taking CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy as a study case, and provide an efficient integrated computation solution. The methodology proposed in this paper generates as-built microstructures associated with the varying L-PBF process parameters via cellular automata (CA). Subsequently, the mechanical responses of these microstructures are estimated by employing crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) simulations. In addition, the approach raised in the paper leverages particle-level microstructure descriptors instead of average feature descriptors for the entire representative volume element (RVE) structure in an ML framework to predict the characteristics of the newly randomly growing grains. This research demonstrate the practicality and instructiveness of the methodology for modeling realistic grains. Then, trained ML model exhibits promising accuracy for the prediction of mechanical properties. This work showcases an integrated computation framework combining advanced materials science and ML techniques for enhancing understanding of the L-PBF process and offering valuable insights into process optimization for L-PBF-built diverse materials.

Experimental characterization and crystal plasticity finite element simulation of the microstructural evolution in CVD tungsten during multi-step rolling

Atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a promising technique for the preparation of tungsten products with high purity, high density and almost unlimited thickness. The tungsten prepared by using the CVD method (CVD-W) usually has a columnar coarse grain microstructure with strong preferred orientations. Multi-step rolling at gradually decreased operating temperatures is an effective method to lower the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature in pure tungsten. So far, the microstructural evolutions of CVD-W during the multi-step rolling processing is still unclear. In this study, the microstructure evolution and texture development of CVD-W during multi-step rolling are investigated by the coupling of electron backscattering diffraction technique and full-field crystal plasticity finite element simulations. After multi-step rolling, the sample exhibits through-thickness texture gradient. A layered structure with elongated 〈100〉 // ND and 〈111〉 // ND grains is observed in the central region and Goss orientation mainly appears in the surface region. Crystal plasticity finite element simulations show that {001}〈110〉 is a stable orientation under the plane strain compression, which is realized by the rotation of {100} grains around ND. Meanwhile, the shear flow promotes the rotation of {100} grains around TD, leading to the formation of 〈111〉 // ND orientation. 〈110〉 // ND orientation is observed near the shear bands, which is generated through the rotation of {100} grains around <100> // RD axis. The rolled CVD-W exhibits crystallographic orientation dependent recrystallization behavior, which is related to the orientation dependent distortion energy generated in the rolling processing. Our studies provide fundamental insights into the microstructure evolution and texture development of CVD-W under the multi-step rolling processing.

Asymmetric and anisotropic quench sensitivity of ZA81M magnesium alloy

The quench sensitivity of the ZA81M magnesium alloy is studied by combining experiment and crystal plasticity finite element simulation. The quench sensitivity is high in tension and low in compression making the single-valued quench sensitivity calculated from hardness insufficient. So, there is different loss rate of strength, along different test directions of the alloy, due to slow quenching, i.e., the quench sensitivity is asymmetric and anisotropic. The coarsening of the precipitate and widening of the precipitate-free zone are the origin of the quench sensitivity. Crystal plasticity finite element simulation is proposed to calculate the quench sensitivity. The phenomenological constitutive model is used to explicitly consider the strengthening effect of precipitates on different slip and twinning systems. So, the precipitate characteristics of the water-quenched and air-cooled alloy are easily captured. The anisotropy and asymmetry of the quench sensitivity in two perpendicular sample planes are determined by simulation. Such a method can be useful for determining the quench sensitivity of precipitation-hardening alloys with low crystal symmetry and with precipitates having different strengthening efficiencies on different slip or twinning systems.

Special texture evolution behavior of strip-cast non-oriented electrical steel combined with in-situ experiment and CPFEM

The impact of shear deformation on texture evolution in strip-cast Fe-1.5%Si non-oriented electrical steel was studied combined with in-suit experiments and crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM). Throughout the deformation process, the texture evolution predominantly follows a traditional route: transitioning from {211}<036> and {411}<148> to {111}<112> orientation. In certain regions with specific stress conditions, orientation evolution shifts from {310}<236> to {411}<148>, {100}<021>, and finally to {100}<001> orientation. Crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) simulation results show that the rotation of {310}<236> through {411}<148> to {100}<021> orientation, {211}<236> and {112}<110> orientations transition to {111} and {110} orientations, respectively, which is consistent with the experimental observations. Recrystallization texture mainly includes favorable λ and near-λ (<100>∥ND, normal direction) textures, with detrimental γ (<111>∥ND) texture essentially diminishing. In-situ heating experiments revealed {411}<148> as the primary recrystallization orientation, the mechanism involves both oriented nucleation and growth. In the edge region lacking stress constraints, the Schmid factor (SF) reaches up to 0.48, the (21-3)[111] slip system is preferentially activated, with shear bands appearing earlier in the same region. Indicating that when slip mechanism alone are inadequate for sustaining plastic deformation, the shear deformation becomes the favored mode of activation. {411}<148> orientation can serve as a transitional orientation for transitioning to {100} orientation, and further as an advantageous transitional orientation during the nucleation and growth of recrystallization. Due to the texture improvement, superior magnetic properties were achieved, with the average magnetic induction (B50) and iron loss (P1.5/50) being 1.77 T and 4.25 W/kg, respectively.

Comparison of Linear and Nonlinear Twist Extrusion Processes with Crystal Plasticity Finite Element Analysis.

The mechanical characteristics of polycrystalline metallic materials are influenced significantly by various microstructural parameters, one of which is the grain size. Specifically, the strength and the toughness of polycrystalline metals exhibit enhancement as the grain size is reduced. Applying severe plastic deformations (SPDs) has a noticeable result in obtaining metallic materials with ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure. SPD, executed through conventional shaping methods like extrusion, plays a pivotal role in the evolution of the texture, which is closely related to the plastic behavior and ductility. A number of SPD processes have been developed to generate ultrafine-grained materials, each having a different shear deformation mechanism. Among these methods, linear twist extrusion (LTE) presents a non-uniform and non-monotonic form of severe plastic deformation, leading to significant shifts in the microstructure. Prior research demonstrates the capability of the LTE process to yield consistent, weak textures in pre-textured copper. However, limitations in production efficiency and the uneven distribution of grain refinement have curbed the widespread use of LTE in industrial settings. This has facilitated the development of an improved novel method, that surpasses the traditional approach, known as the nonlinear twist extrusion procedure (NLTE). The NLTE method innovatively adjusts the channel design of the mold within the twist section to mitigate strain reversal and the rotational movement of the workpiece, both of which have been identified as shortcomings of twist extrusion. Accurate anticipation of texture changes in SPD processes is essential for mold design and process parameter optimization. The performance of the proposed extrusion technique should still be studied. In this context, here, a single crystal (SC) of copper in billet form, passing through both LTE and NLTE, is analyzed, employing a rate-dependent crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) framework. CPFE simulations were performed for both LTE and NLTE of SC copper specimens having <100> or <111> directions parallel to the extrusion direction initially. The texture evolution as well as the cross-sectional distribution of the stress and strain is studied in detail, and the performance of both processes is compared.

Experimental and Crystal Plasticity Finite Element Investigations of Plastic Anisotropy in Additively Manufactured Ti6Al4V Alloy

Additive manufacturing, particularly the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technique, has ushered in a new era of intricate metallic component fabrication, leveraging the exceptional performance of the Ti6Al4V alloy. However, the intricate mechanical behavior of additively manufactured Ti6Al4V, particularly its anisotropic attributes stemming from non-equilibrium microstructures, presents a formidable challenge. In this study, we embark on a comprehensive exploration of the anisotropic mechanical properties exhibited by LPBFed Ti6Al4V alloy. The interplay between microstructure and tensile response is unraveled by integrating experimental investigations with crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) simulations. The acquired empirical data with CPFE model predictions are harmonized through systematic tensile tests along distinct processing orientations. The results unveil the genesis of plastic anisotropy within the LPBFed Ti6Al4V alloy, ascribed to the emergence of columnar grains meticulously aligned along the building direction, despite the intricate material microstructure inherent to additive manufacturing. These findings collectively furnish a holistic comprehension of the intricate nexus between material attributes and the mechanical manifestations intrinsic to metal components realized through additive manufacturing modalities.

The effect of anisotropic rate dependency on the deformation response of Ti-6242 during dwell fatigue loading

The α phase of titanium alloys is known to exhibit both elastic and plastic anisotropic mechanical behavior during deformation loading. Recent experimental studies indicate that single crystal rate dependency may also be anisotropic, though these studies are limited in scale and scope. Consequently, we present a study in which anisotropic rate dependency is studied on polycrystalline samples via crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) simulations, which are compared against previously-published data from electron backscatter diffraction/digital image correlation (EBSD-DIC) experiments. Cold dwell fatigue loading is utilized, owing to the propensity for transient behavior during constant-load dwells, which is hypothesized to be sensitive to the relative rate dependencies on different slip families (i.e., basal, prismatic, and pyramidal) in hexagonal close packed crystals. A suite of CPFE simulations is conducted on polycrystalline samples in which the slip family rate dependency values are parameterized. We analyze simulation results by focusing on the slip activity and accumulation of slip on the various slip families as a function of dwell cycles, as well as the transient effect during singular dwell cycles, for hundreds of crystals simultaneously. Results are further discussed through the lens of findings from EBSD-DIC experiments.

Automated Reconstruction and Conforming Mesh Generation for Polycrystalline Microstructures from Imaging Data

A new algorithm named PolyCISAMR is introduced to automatically generate high-fidelity conforming finite element (FE) meshes for two-dimensional polycrystalline microstructures. PolyCISAMR extends the capabilities of the Conforming to Interface Structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement (CISAMR) algorithm, which transforms a structured grid overlaid on the domain geometry into a high-quality conforming mesh. The PolyCISAMR approach uses a segregated meshing strategy, where CISAMR is used to discretize each grain independently and the resulting matching meshes are merged to form the final FE model. In addition, this article presents a set of integrated algorithms for processing low-resolution images of a polycrystal, reconstructed using DREAM.3D software (Version 6.5.121), to generate NURBS characterizations for each grain prior to mesh generation. Example problems demonstrate the effectiveness of PolyCISAMR in creating high-quality meshes for various polycrystalline metallic microstructures along with corresponding crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) simulations.

Initializing intragranular residual stresses within statistically equivalent microstructures for crystal plasticity simulations

We propose a mechanics framework to compute intragranular or type III residual stress within a polycrystalline aggregate for which experimental characterization of residual stress is unknown. The framework is built upon the inter-relationship between intragranular misorientation (IGM), geometrically necessary dislocation (GND), and long-range internal stress. Given a spatial distribution of IGM, we first calculate the spatial distribution of GND density; subsequently, we calculate the internal stress and strain fields due to the GND distribution. For demonstration, we consider a synthetic microstructure of a hexagonal close-packed material, namely Ti-7Al, wherein the grain size and orientation distributions are statistically equivalent to the distributions obtained via experimental characterization. We refer to this microstructure as a statistically equivalent microstructure (SEM). In an SEM, each grain is usually treated as a pristine crystal and therefore, the SEM contains no IGM. We propose a technique to introduce IGM within the SEM and, subsequently, calculate the GND density and residual stress distributions in a consistent manner. In the process, we ensure that statistical distributions of the IGM and residual strain within the SEM are statistically equivalent to the same obtained from the experimental characterization of Ti-7Al. While establishing statistically equivalent residual stress, the thermal effects during processing of Ti-7Al are implicitly taken into account. Next, we perform crystal plasticity finite element simulations to demonstrate the implications of the initialization of IGM and type III residual stress. Although the IGM and residual stress are related, the results suggest that the type III residual stress initialization has a much more pronounced effect on microplasticity-driven damage mechanisms, such as high cycle fatigue, even within a well-annealed material such as Ti-7Al, thereby emphasizing the need for its initialization for microstructure-sensitive fatigue analysis. Finally, we demonstrate that initializing thermally induced residual stress within Ti-7Al SEM through a cooling simulation, accounting for the anisotropic nature of the coefficient of thermal expansion, yields a grain-averaged residual stress distribution statistically similar to that obtained from our framework and is a special case of the type II residual stress implementation.

Strain rate and anisotropic effects on incipient plastic deformation of Zn–Cu–Ti alloy sheets

Zinc alloys shows strong strain rate dependent and anisotropic mechanical behaviours, the mechanistic origin of which is however not fully understood. In this work, a combination of the experiments and crystal plasticity finite element simulations were used to gain an insight into the relation between deformation mechanisms, tensile deformation behaviour and texture evolution, especially for the incipient plastic deformation stage. To this end, specimens were cut from Zn–Cu–Ti alloy sheets at various orientations with respect to the rolling direction, and uniaxial tensile tests were conducted at different strain rates ranging from 10−3 to 5 × 10−2 s−1. The microstructure evolution with the deformation was examined by the electron backscatter diffraction technique. Crystal plasticity model was calibrated considering the effect of strain rate on the flow stress, and finite element simulations were carried out based on a representative volume element of the polycrystal zinc alloy. It is found out that the flow stress increases significantly, as the loading direction approaches the transverse direction, which results in a lower relative activity of basal slip and higher relative activity of non-basal ones. This, in turn, reduces the rotation of the c-axis of the crystallites towards ND during tensile tests. On the other hand, a positive strain rate sensitivity is found in the zinc alloy. Meanwhile, increasing strain rate leads to an obvious decrease in the activity of the pyramidal π-II slip systems, accompanied by more activated twinning systems. The lower activity of the pyramidal π-II slip at a higher strain rate probably hinders the development of CDRX and grain fragmentation at large strain levels.

Crystal plasticity finite element modelling and mechanical deformation mechanism of nanolaminated graphene reinforced metal matrix composites

Metal matrix composites with certain hierarchical structures are potential to break out the conflicts between strength and toughness. Nano-carbon like graphene (Gn) reinforced metal matrix composites with nanolaminated structures have been largely developed to overcome this issue. However, the plastic deformation mechanism hiding behind the nanolaminated structures is still lacking. In this study, crystal plasticity finite element simulations and composite structure modeling are combined in order to uncover the mechanical deformation behavior of nanolaminated Gn/Al composites. Different lateral Gn sizes of 180, 360 and 720 nm are considered, while the hybrid lateral Gn sizes of 180 and 720 nm are applied as well. Good consistency between experimental and numerical results indicates the reliability of performed simulations. It is found that the strengthening and hardening behaviors of Gn/Al composites are dominated by Gn rather than Al matrix. The edges of Gn serving as a major dislocation nucleation source produce localization of plastic deformation, while the interiors of Gn activate more slip systems but reduce total shear strains. The edges and interiors of Gn determine the stability of plastic deformation of Gn/Al composites; large edge vs. interior area of Gn will lead to early necking. The rule of mixture fails in predicting the peak tensile strength and tensile strain of Gn/Al composites with hybrid lateral Gn sizes, because the microscopic plastic deformation can largely localize around 180 nm Gn in these hybrid Gn/Al composites. This work is enlightening to design and develop novel smart metal matrix composites.

Unraveling the transformation of ductile damage mechanisms of void evolution and strain localization based on deformation heterogeneity

This study delves into the ductile damage mechanism via exploring the intrinsic nature of the transformation of void and strain localization induced damages. In tandem with this, tensile experiments were conducted by using ductile metals of pure titanium and austenite steel with different grain sizes (d¯) and sample thicknesses (t). Various damage behaviors were generated: the void damage (Dv) in which the damage is induced by voids and their evolution, the strain localization induced damage (Dl) in which damage is controlled by localized deformation, and their mixed mode. Examinations of damage characteristics show a transformation from Dl to Dv with the increase of t/d¯ or hardening. To identify the decisive factor behind the mechanism, crystal plasticity finite element simulations were performed, and the grain-level non-homogeneous deformation was carefully examined. The materials with severe inhomogeneous deformation were found to have fewer voids, while the ones with more uniform deformation possessed evident void growth. Deformation heterogeneity was thus identified as a pivotal factor for the Dl - Dv transformation. The change of micro-defect configuration of void and grain boundary (GB) with deformation heterogeneity was discovered to be the underlying cause. In the Dv case, the large number of strain localization zones penetrating within the bulk promotes void nucleation and growth from vacancies and dislocations. The Dl case, on the other hand, gets more new GBs but smaller number of voids during deformation. The larger continuous strain localization zone facilitates the dislocation-consuming process of GB formation, resulting in the difficulty of void formation. Additionally, a characteristic parameter representing the deformation heterogeneity degree was defined. A Dl - Dv paradigm, which involves the change of damage mode and micro-defect configuration with deformation heterogeneity, and the characteristic parameter was established. The paradigm was validated to have a wide applicability with its efficiency in interpreting extensive damage phenomena. These explorations are expected to add new insights into the understanding of damage mechanism and support the development of a unified damage prediction platform.

Intra-grain orientation distributions in deformed aluminium: Synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment and crystal-plasticity finite-element simulation

The development of intra-grain orientation distributions is analyzed for 446 individual grains of an aluminium polycrystal deformed in tension to successive strains of 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 4.5%. In the experiment, diffraction contrast tomography (DCT) and far-field 3D X-ray diffraction microscopy (3DXRD) were used, and a reduced-order representation of the intra-grain orientation distributions was determined from the broadening of the 3DXRD diffraction spots. A high-resolution finite-element simulation (700 elements/grain on average) was conducted on the same polycrystal, providing detailed information on orientation evolution. Several metrics were considered to analyze the experimental and simulated orientation distributions, including the average disorientation angles and the preferential disorientation axes. The average disorientation angles were found to increase almost linearly with strain, and to be in appreciable correlation between experiment and simulation (albeit evolving faster in simulation). It was shown that the preferential disorientation axes are distributed perpendicular to the tensile direction (Z) and perpendicular to the X–Y component of the Rodrigues orientation vector. Detailed crystal plasticity analyses showed that the distribution of preferential disorientation axes is related to the presence of larger slip variabilities on particular slip systems. Using a simplified approach, it was shown that accurate knowledge of the average stress of a grain is necessary in order to predict the preferential disorientation axis, which is well-captured by the finite-element simulation. The intra-grain stress distribution appears to have comparatively less influence.

Fatigue behaviour analysis of thermal cyclic loading for through-silicon via structures based on backstress stored energy density

Through-silicon via (TSV) structures are widely used in microelectronic due to the ease of chip interconnection. Few research has focused on investigating the fatigue properties of TSV structures using crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) simulations. As the process of TSV structures approaches the micron scale, the effects of anisotropic microstructure and grain size on their fatigue behaviours will become necessary. The present work aims to use CPFE simulations to investigate the fatigue properties of TSVs at the microscale. Finite element models with realistic EBSD morphology and orientation are established for four TSV structures with different grain sizes, and CPFE simulations with thermal cyclic loading from −55℃ to 125℃ are performed. From the energy point of view, the stored energy density based on backstress and strain gradient is proposed as a fatigue indicator parameter (FIP). CPFE simulation results show that low-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) and high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) dominate crack initiation at the top, bottom or edges of the TSV structure, which is still mainly due to the thermal mismatch effect caused by the difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion of the materials. The crack initiation in the internal structure is mainly caused by symmetric grains containing twin boundaries (TBs), or trigrain boundaries, and this is different from the macroscopic simulations. Combined with the local FIPs concentration distribution, the backstress stored energy density is able to capture more details than the cumulative plastic strain because of its direct correlation with the strain gradient, and validates its effectiveness as a FIP.

An assessment of polarized light microscopy as a characterization method for crystal plasticity simulations

Polarized light microscopy is a large-area, high-resolution, high-throughput microstructural characterization method for polycrystalline materials comprised of hexagonal close-packed crystals. Due to the fact that polarized light microscopy only determines the orientation of a crystal’s c axis, it is necessary to assess the applicability of this new characterization modality for use in integrated computational materials engineering workflows for simulating the deformation response of polycrystalline materials. We present a computational study in which the effect of this orientation ambiguity on the predictions of crystal plasticity finite element simulations is quantified. We focus on an idealized polycrystalline sample with random texture, from which a number of c axis-similar samples are generated, each with random rotations about each constituent crystal’s c axis. We scrutinize the differences in stress field predictions between the reference sample and the randomly altered samples during monotonic tensile tests, as well as the spatial differences in predictions. Our findings indicate that differences are lowest in the elastic regime, and increase dramatically during the macroscopic elastic–plastic transition. We further find that results do not exhibit a strong spatial dependence, indicating that orientation and neighborhood are the primary causes of differences in stress field predictions.

Microstructurally-sensitive fatigue crack nucleation in a Zircaloy-4 alloy

Microstructurally-sensitive fatigue crack nucleation and subsequently short crack growth were observed at an edge-notch in a textured Zircaloy-4 sample with the c-axis aligned perpendicular to the viewing surface. To understand the competition between the main crack and the secondary crack nucleation at the edge-notch root, a combined experimental and computational investigation was conducted to analyse various micro-scale mechanical quantities, including local strain, local stress, GND density, and stored energy density. A computational crystal plasticity finite element simulation that incorporated grain morphology, crystallographic orientation, and loading conditions was found to have good agreement with experimental results from the three-point bend fatigue test. The results showed that both the main crack and secondary crack nucleation sites had the highest magnitudes of local stored energy density, indicating that this factor was both necessary and sufficient for crack nucleation.

In-situ EBSD observation and simulation of free surface roughening and ductile failure in the ultra-thin ferritic stainless steel sheet

Surface roughening is one of the most fundamental issues which greatly affects the plastic deformation and ductile fracture behavior of ultra-thin sheet materials. The present study investigated the influence of free surface roughening on the micromechanical failure in the ultra-thin ferritic stainless steel (FSS) sheet for bipolar plate in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell under in-situ tensile deformation. The microstructural evolution during uniaxial tension was monitored using in-situ electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique. Then the initial microstructure was directly mapped onto the finite element mesh of representative volume element (RVE) in the crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) simulation. The CPFE model was incorporated with the microscopic ductile fracture criterion in terms of plastic energy dissipation in order to simulate the initiation of ductile fracture caused by the free surface roughening. The in-situ EBSD observations reveal that the microstructure of the ultra-thin FSS sheet exhibits heterogeneous plastic deformation and strain localization on the surface at the large deformation owing to the considerable free surface roughening. The CPFE simulations well reproduce the stress/strain heterogeneity and the local hotspots of the ductile fracture initiation. It reveals that the increase of surface roughness with the deformation results in the increased inhomogeneity of thickness which accelerates the strain localization, consequently the premature necking and failure in the ultra-thin steel sheet. Due to the free surface roughening which can facilitate strain localization, the initiation of ductile fracture is obviously observed in both the ridges and valleys in the free surface and its propagation along the pronounced localization band through the thickness, leading to material failure. The good correlation of free surface roughening to the onset of plastic instability and ductile fracture further advances the insight into the micromechanical failure during plastic deformation of the ultra-thin FSS sheet for bipolar plate in PEM fuel cell.

Crystallographic texture effect on statistical microvoid growth in heterogeneous polycrystals

Polycrystalline materials usually exhibit obvious preferred grain orientations (i.e., crystallographic texture) after rolling and heat treatments, leading to a certain crystalline anisotropy. However, most previous studies on microvoid growth generally treated the material as homogeneous isotropic matrix, ignoring the influence of crystallographic texture. In the present work, four typical crystallographic textures of face-centered cubic crystal are considered, including the Cube, Goss, Brass and Copper textures. Afterwards, the texture effect on microvoid growth is systematically studied by crystal plasticity finite element simulation, from a statistical point of view. In addition, the role of loading mode (i.e., uniaxial or biaxial tension) in the texture effect on microvoid growth has also been explored. The results indicate that the crystallographic texture evidently affects the statistical void growth in heterogeneous polycrystals, regardless of the loading mode. Meanwhile, it has been found that the statistical void growth of Cube (resp. Brass) texture is always slower (resp. faster) than that of random grain-orientation case. Furthermore, it is interestingly concluded that for the four considered textures, the trend of statistical void growth (from fast to slow) is well consistent with that of average flow stress (from high to low) at any given strain level, which cannot be captured by the classical Rice-Tracey model. Finally, based on the statistical characteristics of void growth for different textures, a statistical Rice-Tracey model incorporating the texture effect is established. It is demonstrated that this statistical model can well envelop all the dispersed void growth results of different textures for the uniaxial tensile loading.
