Contrasting resistance and resilience trajectories of zooplankton communities in restored fishless alpine lakes

AbstractCatastrophic state changes often occur in ecosystems as consequences of shifts in the dominant life forms, such as in the case of sportfish introduction into naturally fishless mountain lakes. While the pronounced ecological displacement of native communities by these novel predators (i.e., weak resistance) is well documented, few studies have also examined the dynamics of their recovery rates (i.e., “engineering resilience”) following stressor removal. We addressed this knowledge gap by quantifying the taxonomic and species trait‐based ordination trajectories of crustacean zooplankton communities in stocked alpine lakes, which differed in how they were restored to a natural fishless state over a period of six decades. Resilience and resistance trajectories differed in each lake as the ecological importance of trait‐based species recolonization potential (e.g., asexual vs. sexual reproduction) replaced that of tolerance of size‐selective predation by fish (e.g., body size, pigmentation, motility). As a result, re‐establishment of large‐bodied zooplankton following the elimination of fish restored annual secondary production. In contrast, a more gradual unidirectional ordination trajectory toward smaller zooplankton body size and a decline in total zooplankton biomass occurred in a nearby alpine lake containing a protected native bull trout population. Although recovery trajectories returned via routes that differed from those of earlier resistance trajectories (i.e., hysteresis), we discovered that full taxonomic and functional recovery was realized in all the restored fishless lakes within three decades, regardless of the approach used to achieve ecosystem restoration.

Opening the black box of winter: Full‐year dynamics of crustacean zooplankton along a nearshore depth gradient in a large lake

AbstractPast studies of zooplankton seasonality in large temperate lakes have often neglected the winter period. Winter conditions are rapidly changing (e.g., reduced ice cover extent and duration, altered thermal and mixing regimes) in northern lakes, making it important to fill the existing winter knowledge gap. In this study, we sampled five stations in Lake Superior across a nearshore depth gradient through the full year to assess the phenology of crustacean zooplankton communities and the effect of environmental drivers on them. Across stations, zooplankton densities were the lowest in winter (0.9 ± 0.6 Ind. L−1) and highest in summer (14.2 ± 15.1 Ind. L−1). Zooplankton abundances and community composition were less seasonally variable at deeper stations compared to shallower and more terrestrially affected regions. Cladocerans were the dominant taxonomic group during the summer across all stations, while cyclopoid and calanoid copepods were more important during the fall, winter, and spring. Among feeding groups, herbivores were most abundant in summer while omnivores and carnivores dominated in winter. We found that water temperature and food availability were the main drivers of total zooplankton densities through the year and during the cold seasons, but the effect of these factors varied among the main taxonomic groups. Our study demonstrates seasonal and spatial variation in crustacean zooplankton and environmental parameters, with the highest fluctuation at shallower stations. This study offers new information on seasonal crustacean zooplankton dynamics and contributes to understanding the effects of climate change on large lake ecosystems.

Seasonal and plurennial changes of POPs repository in freshwater zooplankton: A 10-year study in the large deep subalpine Lake Maggiore (Italy).

Determining the concentration of POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) such as total dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDTtot) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the zooplankton is essential for evaluating the level of toxicity in the environment and the risk to ecosystem health. The extent to which POPs persist in the environment and affect human health depends on accumulation in the different components of the zooplankton community such as particle feeders and/or predators and their subsequent consumption by fish, which varies seasonally. We analyzed ten-years (2011-2020) of seasonal data on POPs in the crustacean zooplankton community of Lake Maggiore (Italy). The concentration of total DDTs, as sum of all congeners ranged between 23.5 and 156.9 ng/g dry weight, while sumPCB14 ranged from 24.4 and 133.6 ng/g dry weight. We traced particle feeders' vs predatory taxa within the zooplankton community using carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic values. POPs concentration was significantly related to the nitrogen isotopic values. The zooplankton biomass increase in Spring was important, both through this being a period of increased metabolism and activity of planktivorous fish and also as it was the period when the zooplankton repository of POPs was at a maximum. DDTtot stocked in zooplankton ≥450 μm was up to 275 ng/m2, while sumPCB14 was 285 ng/m2 in 2013. A decrease of DDTtot stocked in the zooplankton repository characterized the last five years examined, when mean annual values (14.8-56.9 ng/m2) were less than half those of the previous period (50.7-128.6 ng/m2).

Simultaneous invasion decouples zebra mussels and water clarity

Species invasions are a leading threat to ecosystems globally, but our understanding of interactions among multiple invasive species and their outcomes on ecosystem properties is undeveloped despite their significance to conservation and management. Here we studied a large lake in Minnesota, USA, that experienced a simultaneous surge in invasive zebra mussel and spiny water flea populations. A long-term (2000–2018) dataset offered a rare opportunity to assess whole-ecosystem shifts following the co-invasion. Within two years, the native crustacean zooplankton community declined abruptly in density and productivity (−93% and −91%, respectively). Summer phytoplankton abundance and water clarity remained stable across the time series, an unexpected outcome given the high density of zebra mussels in the lake. Observational data and modeling indicate that removal of native herbivorous zooplankton by the predatory spiny water flea reduced zooplankton grazing pressure enough to compensate new grazing losses due to zebra mussels, resulting in a zero net effect on phytoplankton abundance and water clarity despite a wholesale shift in secondary production from the pelagic to the benthic food web. This study reveals the extent of direct and indirect effects of two aquatic invaders on food-web processes that cancel shifts in water clarity, a highly valued ecosystem service.

Evidence of the Anthropic Impact on a Crustacean Zooplankton Community in Two North Patagonian Lakes

Lately, agriculture, livestock, forestry, and aquaculture activities have been greatly developed in Chilean North Patagonia, negatively impacting the balance of the environmental conditions in lakes and affecting the development and survival of several native species. The aim of this study was to assess the anthropic impact on a zooplankton community in two North Patagonian lakes. We collected samples from four sites belonging to Lake Icalma and Lake Llanquihue, including four replicates per site. Water samples were analyzed for physicochemical characteristics and zooplankton communities. We focused on the presence of Daphnia pulex, a species of zooplanktonic crustacean that performs a key role in capturing energy from primary producers to deliver it to final consumers such as fish. We found that Llanquihue showed higher total phosphorus, nitrogen, copper, iron, manganese, total dissolved solids (TDS), and conductivity (EC) than Icalma. Furthermore, ecological variables were greatly decreased due to total P, total N, manganese, copper, total dissolved solids, and conductivity, which changed the species dominance of the zooplankton community in Llanquihue, indicating some degree of anthropization. This study provides fundamental information on the anthropogenic impact on water quality, as well as on zooplankton diversity, highlighting the importance of monitoring the health of these North Patagonia freshwater ecosystems.

Response of Crustacean Zooplankton and Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities to Selenium Additions in a Boreal Lake.

Selenium (Se) is a contaminant of concern in Canada mainly due to its teratogenic effects on fish and birds. However, few studies have assessed the effects of Se on invertebrates in a field setting. The objective of this experiment was to assess potential community-level impacts of Se additions on zooplankton and benthic macroinvertebrates in a boreal lake ecosystem. From June to August 2018, Se (as selenite) was added to six limnocorrals in Lake 239 at the International Institute for Sustainable Development-Experimental Lakes Area, Northwestern Ontario, Canada, to achieve mean measured aqueous concentrations of 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.4, 5.6 and 7.9 µg Se/L, with three untreated limnocorrals serving as controls (background Se = 0.08-0.09 µg/L). Periphyton, phytoplankton, and invertebrates (zooplankton and benthos) were monitored for 63 days. Zooplankton community composition shifted as a function of Se exposure, with Cladocera biomass and density decreasing with increasing Se concentrations. Similarly, cumulative abundance and biomass of Heptageniidae decreased with increasing Se treatment throughout the experimental period. The present study demonstrated that Se can have impacts on aquatic invertebrates at environmentally relevant exposure levels, and that future ecological risk assessments should consider the impacts of Se on both vertebrates and invertebrates. Species diversity and community structure of crustacean zooplankton in the highland small waterbodies in Northwest Yunnan, China.

Small waterbodies are a unique aquatic ecosystem with an increasing recognition for their important role in maintaining regional biodiversity and delivering ecosystem services. However, small waterbodies in Northwest Yunnan, one of the most concerned global biodiversity hot-spots, remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated the community structure of crustacean zooplankton and their relationships with limnological, morphometric and spatial variables in the highland small waterbodies in Northwest Yunnan in both the dry (October 2015) and rainy (June 2016) seasons. A total of 38 species of crustacean zooplankton were identified in our study, which is significantly higher than many other reported waterbodies in the Yunnan–Guizhou plateau as well as in the Yangtze River basin. This suggests that the highland small waterbodies are critical in maintaining regional zooplankton diversity in Northwest Yunnan. Meanwhile, we found limnological variables could explain most variation of crustacean zooplankton community, comparing to the morphometric and spatial variables in both the rainy and dry seasons. Our study revealed the diversity and community structure of crustacean zooplankton in the highland small waterbodies in Northwest Yunnan and highlighted the importance of small waterbodies in maintaining regional biodiversity.

Taxonomic and functional differences between winter and summer crustacean zooplankton communities in lakes across a trophic gradient

AbstractDespite increasing interest in winter limnology, few studies have examined under-ice zooplankton communities and the factors shaping them in different types of temperate lakes. To better understand drivers of zooplankton community structure in winter and summer, we sampled 13 lakes across a large trophic status gradient for crustacean zooplankton abundance, taxonomic and functional community composition and C/N stable isotopes. Average winter zooplankton densities were one-third of summer densities across the study lakes. Proportionally, cladocerans were more abundant in summer than winter, with the opposite pattern for calanoids and cyclopoids. In green (eutrophic) lakes, zooplankton densities were higher under the ice than in brown (dystrophic) and blue (oligotrophic) lakes, suggesting better conditions for zooplankton in productive lakes during winter. Overall, zooplankton communities were more similar across lakes under the ice than during the open water season. Feeding group classification showed a decrease in herbivore abundance and an increase in predators from summer to winter. C/N stable isotope results suggested higher lipid content in overwintering zooplankton and potentially increased reliance on the microbial loop by winter zooplankton. Our results show substantial variation in the seasonality of zooplankton communities in different lake types and identify some of the factors responsible for this variation.

Effects of environmental factors on the functional diversity of crustacean zooplankton community

基于功能性状的生物多样性分析是当前生态学研究中的常用方法之一.浮游动物作为水生态系统食物网的重要组成成分，其功能多样性受关注的程度远不如其重要性.本文通过对14个水体浮游甲壳动物群落结构的研究，分析了环境因子对其功能多样性指数，包括功能丰富度（FRic）、功能均匀度（FEve）、功能离散度（FDiv）和功能分散度（FDis），以及功能群分布的影响.结果显示，亲缘关系近的物种（在分类学上相近）由于具有相似的功能性状，均很好地聚为一类.相关分析显示，FRic、FEve和FDiv与环境因子之间不存在显著的相关关系；FDis与总溶解性氮、总溶解性磷、氨氮和悬浮物C/P比存在显著的相关关系.回归分析发现，随着水体总溶解性磷浓度的上升，浮游甲壳动物的物种数表现出下降趋势，功能群数量、功能群Shannon-Wiener指数和FDis均显著下降；另外，FRic和FDis与功能群数量均呈显著正相关.这些结果表明水体富营养化能促进浮游甲壳动物群落功能性状的趋同，环境选择是群落结构变异的主要驱动力之一.;Methods based on functional traits are widely used in current biodiversity studies. As an important component of aquatic food web, the attention paid on zooplankton by researchers is disproportional to its functional importance. In the present study, the effects of environmental factors on functional diversity indices as well as on distribution of functional groups of crustacean zooplankton communities in 14 waterbodies were investigated. The results showed that species with similar functional traits were grouped together and phylogenetically related. Correlation analysis found no significant correlation between functional richness (FRic), functional evenness (FEve), functional divergence (FDiv) and environmental factors. However, significant relationships were found for functional dispersion (FDis) in relation to total dissolved nitrogen, total dissolved phosphorus(TDP), ammonia nitrogen and seston C/P ratio. Regression analysis found that except species richness, number and Shannon-Wiener index of functional groups as well as FDis all declined significantly with the increasing concentration of TDP. In addition, FRic and FDis were both positively correlated with the number of functional groups. These results suggest that eutrophication induces the clustering of functional traits of crustacean zooplankton, and environmental filtering is one of the major forces in driving the formation of crustacean zooplankton community structure.

Crustacean zooplankton communities, mixotrophic cililates, and optical properties in North Patagonian lakes, investigated by remote sensing

Abstract North Patagonian lakes are characterized by their oligotrophic or oligo-mesotrophic status. These conditions bring with them, respectively, the presence of abundant mixotrophic ciliates and a low species number of crustacean zooplankton under oligotrophic status, and low numbers of mixotrophic ciliates and a high species number of zooplankton under oligo-mesotrophic status. The aims of the present study are, (1) to use remote sensing techniques for determining abundances of mixotrophic ciliates and crustacean zooplankton, and (2) to characterize these mixotrophic and zooplankton communities by using null models. The sensing was accomplished from a satellite, i.e., by measuring the reflectance of the sunlight on a waterbody, which result will vary according to the contents of the water column. The results of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed that sites with low reflectance of all bands have a high abundance of Stentor accompanied by low zooplankton absolute abundance, whereas a markedly opposite situation was observed under high reflectance, where Stentor has low abundance in conjunction with high zooplankton absolute abundances. The null models revealed that the communities in the studied sites do not have structured species associations, and that there is an overlap of niches. These results obtained agree with similar observations for Argentinean Patagonian lakes.

Evaluation of the responsiveness of the crustacean zooplankton community size spectrum to environmental change and an exotic invader in a sample of Canadian Shield lakes

We evaluated the crustacean zooplankton size spectrum as an indicator of lake characteristics and ecosystem change. First, we used time series from seven Canadian Shield lakes to identify the factors associated with among-lake and among-year variability in the spectrum slope (relative abundance of small and large zooplankton) and centered height (total abundance). Second, we used time series from an invaded and three control lakes to assess change in mean and variability in slope and height due to a Bythotrephes invasion. We found that the slope and height reflected among-lake predictors related to morphometry. The slope was responsive to long-term declining lake phosphorus levels, whereas the height reflected both increases in dissolved organic carbon and decreases in ice duration. We detected a significant increase (i.e., flattening) in mean slope and substantial (up to 120%) increases in the CV of height after Bythotrephes invaded Harp Lake. Thus, the zooplankton size spectrum was responsive to long-term environmental change, and a strong top-down perturbation can be detected through regular and frequent monitoring programs.

Permafrost thaw stimulates primary producers but has a moderate effect on primary consumers in subarctic ponds

AbstractFrozen tundra soils hold one of the Earth's largest pools of organic carbon. Climate warming and the associated permafrost thaw release a large fraction of this carbon into circumpolar lakes, inducing extreme browning that fuels the heterotrophic microbial food web. How this permafrost carbon affects organisms higher in the food chain remains unknown. Using dissolved organic matter properties, total phosphorus, chlorophyll a, fatty acids, and stable isotopes, we investigated the influence of thawing permafrost on primary producers and primary consumers of the planktonic food web. We sampled four subarctic thaw ponds that were affected by permafrost carbon and another four ponds that were not. Our results highlight the stimulating influence of eroding and degrading ice‐rich permafrost on nutrients and planktonic algae. Relative to the non‐thaw ponds, the permafrost thaw‐influenced freshwaters had higher total phosphorus concentrations (14.8 vs. 70.4 µg/L, respectively). This in turn led to a higher chlorophyll a (2.7 vs. 45.2 µg/L) and seston omega‐3 fatty acid concentrations (7.3 vs. 53.5 µg/L) despite significantly reduced light for primary production. Differences between the thaw and non‐thaw ponds were less marked at the primary consumer level. Daphnia pulex, which dominated the crustacean zooplankton community, did not respond to the higher omega‐3 availability in the thaw ponds but rather assimilated the high‐quality fatty acids equally in all ponds, possibly because their metabolic needs were already saturated. However, some lower quality terrestrial carbon compounds from permafrost ended up in the D. pulex body mass, resulting in a median allochthony of 18% based on fatty acid mixing model; non‐thaw ponds had median allochthony mixing model estimates of 8%. The high availability of algal resources seemed to prevent extensive zooplankton allochthony in subarctic thaw ponds.

Submerged aquatic vegetation cover and complexity drive crustacean zooplankton community structure in a large fluvial lake: An in situ approach

Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) is considered an important driver of the zooplankton community, owing to the refuge offered by its structural complexity. However, non-destructive in situ approaches to assess quantitatively the features of SAV beds and their effects on zooplankton community are still lacking. This study aims to: 1) estimate SAV cover and complexity using subaquatic upward photographs (SUP) and 2) analyse the relationship between SAV variables and crustacean zooplankton composition and functional diversity (FD). SAV biomass and zooplankton were sampled at 52 stations in a large fluvial lake. Two metrics based on SUP were used to quantify SAV cover and complexity: 1) the percentage of the underwater landscape occupied by SAV (PLAND: SAV cover), and 2) its perimeter-area fractal dimension (PAFRAC: SAV complexity). Zooplankton composition and functional diversity were estimated based on crustacean species assemblages and functional traits. We used linear models to describe the relationships between SAV indices, environmental variables and zooplankton abundance, biomass and FD. SUP was an effective method to estimate in situ SAV cover and complexity. PLAND and PAFRAC were positively related to SAV biomass and zooplankton abundance, yielding a non-destructive assessment of the SAV-zooplankton relationships. Our study partially supports the habitat complexity-ecological niche availability hypothesis, as SAV cover and complexity influenced zooplankton functional groups and diversity indices. However, water transparency and depth also had important effects in interaction with PLAND and PAFRAC, and it remains difficult to fully disentangle the effects of SAV complexity from SAV cover on crustacean zooplankton community structure.

Calibration of the zooplankton community size spectrum as an indicator of change in Canadian Shield lakes

Developing the crustacean zooplankton community size spectrum into an indicator of change in lakes requires quantification of the natural variability in the size spectrum related to broad-scale seasonal, annual, and spatial factors. Characterizing seasonal patterns of variation in the size spectrum is necessary so that monitoring programs can be designed to minimize the masking effects that seasonal processes can have on detecting longer-term temporal change. We used a random effects model to measure monthly, annual, and interlake variability in the slope (i.e., relative abundance of small and large organisms) and centered height (i.e., total abundance) of the crustacean zooplankton normalized abundance size spectrum from 1981 to 2011 among eight Canadian Shield lakes. Consistent with theoretical predictions, the slope was a relatively stable characteristic of the zooplankton community compared with the height, which varied significantly among lakes. We identified a seasonal signal in height and slope and used a mixed effects model to characterize the linear rate of change from May to October; there was an overall decline in height and an overall increase in slope. Seasonal variance was greater than annual variance for both the height and the slope, suggesting that long-term monitoring of lakes and interlake comparisons using zooplankton size spectra should be based on temporally standardized sampling protocols that minimize the effects of seasonal processes. We recommend sampling the zooplankton community in midsummer because this results in size spectrum estimates close to seasonal mean values.

Evaluating the potential of direct RNA nanopore sequencing: Metatranscriptomics highlights possible seasonal differences in a marine pelagic crustacean zooplankton community

The implementation of cost-effective monitoring programs for zooplankton remains challenging due to the requirements of taxonomical expertise and the high costs of sampling and species identification. To reduce costs, molecular methods have been proposed as alternatives to morphology-based monitoring. Metatranscriptomics can contribute to promote both cost-effectiveness and accuracy of biological assessments of aquatic ecosystems. Here, we describe and evaluate the construction of a metatranscriptome dataset from a pelagic crustacean zooplankton community. We sampled zooplankton in one marine station, named LW02, in the North Sea, in both winter and summer, and generated transcripts using Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT), a third-generation nanopore-based sequencing technology. ONT is, uniquely, capable of sequencing RNA directly, rather than depending on reverse transcription and PCR, and applicable to be used directly in the field. We found that metatranscriptomics is capable of species detection, including screening for the presence of endoparasites, hence competing with morphological identification. Taxonomic analysis based on ribosomal 18S transcripts identified calanoid copepods, particularly Temora longicornis and Acartia clausi, as the most abundant community members. Moreover, up to 40.4% and 50.5% of all sequences could be assigned to predicted genes in the winter and summer sample, respectively. The most abundant mRNA transcripts with known function coded for essential metabolic processes. GO term annotation revealed that genes involved in glycolytic and translation-related processes were most expressed in the community. Although small in scale, our study provides the basis for future efforts to characterize the metatranscriptome of marine zooplankton communities and its application in biomonitoring programs.

Hypolimnetic Hypoxia Increases the Biomass Variability and Compositional Variability of Crustacean Zooplankton Communities

In freshwater lakes and reservoirs, climate change and eutrophication are increasing the occurrence of low-dissolved oxygen concentrations (hypoxia), which has the potential to alter the variability of zooplankton seasonal dynamics. We sampled zooplankton and physical, chemical and biological variables (e.g., temperature, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll a) in four reservoirs during the summer stratified period for three consecutive years. The hypolimnion (bottom waters) of two reservoirs remained oxic throughout the entire stratified period, whereas the hypolimnion of the other two reservoirs became hypoxic during the stratified period. Biomass variability (measured as the coefficient of the variation of zooplankton biomass) and compositional variability (measured as the community composition of zooplankton) of crustacean zooplankton communities were similar throughout the summer in the oxic reservoirs; however, biomass variability and compositional variability significantly increased after the onset of hypoxia in the two seasonally-hypoxic reservoirs. The increase in biomass variability in the seasonally-hypoxic reservoirs was driven largely by an increase in the variability of copepod biomass, while the increase in compositional variability was driven by increased variability in the dominance (proportion of total crustacean zooplankton biomass) of copepod taxa. Our results suggest that hypoxia may increase the seasonal variability of crustacean zooplankton communities.

Observations on crustacean zooplankton in two connected north Patagonian lakes (Calafquén-Pellaifa, 39°S, Chile)

Abstract The northern Patagonian lakes (38-41°S), are characterized by their location in catchment basins that have been markedly altered through human intervention. In those basins, the original native, perennial forest has been replaced by towns, villages and agricultural zones. The present study was done in two interconnected north Patagonian lakes (the lakes Calafquén and Pellaifa), where the species composition of the crustacean zooplankton community was compared, using a biodiversity index and size-structure null models. The results denoted the presence of marked differences between both sites, Calafquén lake being inhabited by less species and in general showing lower abundances of individuals in comparison to Pellaifa lake. The results of size-structure null models revealed the absence of interspecific competition for both sites. The obtained results would agree with similar observations for other northern Patagonian lakes in Argentina and Chile.

A cross-lake comparison of crustacean zooplankton communities in the Laurentian Great Lakes, 1997–2016

Spring and summer open-water crustacean zooplankton communities were examined across all five Laurentian Great Lakes from 1997 to 2016. Spring communities were dominated by calanoid (lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan) or cyclopoid (lakes Erie and Ontario) copepods. Volumetric biomass of summer communities increased along an assumed trophic gradient (Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario; eastern, central and western Erie), as did dominance by cyclopoids and cladocerans. Over the time series of the study, summer communities in lakes Michigan, Huron and Ontario shifted towards greater dominance by calanoids and greater similarity with Lake Superior. Trajectories of changes were different; however, reductions in cladocerans accounted for most of the change in lakes Michigan and Huron while reductions in cyclopoids and increases in Leptodiaptomus sicilis were behind the changes in Lake Ontario. Shifts in the predatory cladoceran community in Lake Ontario from Cercopagis pengoi to occasional dominance by Bythotrephes longimanus, a species much more vulnerable to planktivory, as well as the appearance of Daphnia mendotae in a daphnid community previously consisting almost exclusively of the smaller Daphnia retrocurva, suggest impacts of reduced vertebrate predation. In contrast, strong correlations between cladocerans and chlorophyll in lakes Michigan and Huron point to the possible importance of bottom-up forces in those lakes. Large interannual shifts in cladoceran community structure in the central and eastern basins of Lake Erie suggest intense but variable vertebrate predation pressure. The zooplankton communities of lakes Huron, Michigan and Ontario may be approaching a historic community structure represented by Lake Superior.

Calanoid copepod zooplankton density is positively associated with water residence time across the continental United States

Inherent differences between naturally-formed lakes and human-made reservoirs may play an important role in shaping zooplankton community structure. For example, because many reservoirs are created by impounding and managing lotic systems for specific human purposes, zooplankton communities may be affected by factors that are unique to reservoirs, such as shorter water residence times and a reservoir’s management regime, compared to natural lakes. However, the environmental factors that structure zooplankton communities in natural lakes vs. reservoirs may vary at the continental scale and remain largely unknown. We analyzed data from the 2007 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Lakes Assessment and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ National Inventory of Dams to compare large-bodied crustacean zooplankton communities (defined here as individuals retained by 0.243 mm mesh size) in natural lakes and reservoirs across the continental U.S. using multiple linear regressions and regression tree analyses. We found that large-bodied crustacean zooplankton density was overall higher in natural lakes compared to reservoirs when the effect of latitude was controlled. The difference between waterbody types was driven by calanoid copepods, which were also more likely to be dominant in the >0.243 mm zooplankton community in natural lakes than in reservoirs. Regression tree analyses revealed that water residence time was not a major driver of calanoid copepod density in natural lakes but was one of the most important drivers of calanoid copepod density in reservoirs, which had on average 0.5-year shorter water residence times than natural lakes. Reservoirs managed for purposes that resulted in shorter residence times (e.g., hydroelectric power) had lower zooplankton densities than reservoirs managed for purposes that resulted in longer residence times (e.g., irrigation). Consequently, our results indicate that water residence time may be an important characteristic driving differing large-bodied zooplankton dynamics between reservoirs and natural lakes.
