Screen Time Soars and Vision Suffers: How School Closures During the Pandemic Affected Children and Adolescents' Eyesight.

This study aimed to determine the impact of school closures on visual acuity and screen time among students in Qatar. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted, targeting governmental school students. Data were collected via telephone interviews with parents, and visual acuity measurements were extracted from the electronic health records. We interviewed 1546 parents of selected students, about 24% reported their children's history of visual disturbances, primarily refractive errors. The mean screen time across the week increased significantly by 11.5 ± 11.6h during school closures. We observed a significant decline of visual acuity during the closure compared to the pre-closure period across the entire sample, both sexes, and the younger age group. Furthermore, logistic regression analysis showed that local students and those with a history of visual disturbances were 1.7 times (AOR: 1.73, 95%CI 1.18-2.54, p = 0.005) and 2.5 times (AOR: 2.52, 95%CI 1.69-3.76, p < 0.001) more likely to experience decline of visual acuity respectively. School closures in Qatar were associated with a significant increase in screen time among students and a notable decline in their visual acuity. This deterioration highlights the need to monitor children's screen time and implement cost-effective measures to reduce screen exposure and enhance overall eye health among students.

COVID-19 Vaccination Status among People with Epilepsy Attending a Tertiary Care Epilepsy Clinic: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract Objective The vaccine is the greatest weapon in the battle against the coronavirus disease (COVID) pandemic. Even though COVID-19 vaccines are considered safe in people with epilepsy (PWE), a sizable proportion of PWE are concerned about the safety of vaccines such as precipitation of seizures. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of COVID-19 vaccine administration, factors affecting the vaccine hesitancy, and side effects of vaccine among PWE. Materials and Methods In this cross-sectional analytical study between December 2021 and August 2022, we included PWE &gt; 15 years attending the epilepsy clinic irrespective of gender. We recorded the demographic and clinical details, COVID-19 vaccination status, and vaccine hesitancy. Those who had received two doses were considered as fully vaccinated. Results We recruited 226 participants with a median age of 31.5 (15) years. Ninety-six (42.5%) PWE were women and 153 (67.7%) were of rural domicile. Only 96 (42%) had received two or more doses of any COVID-19 vaccine. After vaccination, 45 (30.8%) PWE complained of at least one general side effects and five PWE experienced seizures. Fear of precipitating the seizures was the most common reason for hesitancy in 39 (49%), whereas 26 (33%) PWE were deferred by health care workers. None of the factors such as age (p = 0.366), age of onset of seizures, gender (p = 0.167), domicile (p = 0.090), educational status (p = 0.619), and seizure characteristics (p = 0.675) were associated with vaccination status. Conclusion Only 96 (42%) PWE were fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and fear of worsening of the seizure frequency was the most common reason for the vaccine hesitancy. Vaccination was associated with seizures in five PWE. A multicentric population-based study may give better information.

Understanding of middle east women’s decisions and barriers to use family planning methods

Background when family planning methods not use, there is a higher chance of high fertility, which raises health risks for both mother and infant and lowers quality of life by limiting access to jobs employment, education, and nutrition. Unsatisfactory needs and poor family planning use can be explained by fear of negative impacts, rejection from couples, limits in knowledge, and social condemnation. Objectives To understanding the Middle East women’s barriers about make decisions and use of family planning methods Methodology A descriptive and analytic (cross sectional) study, conducted at six Arabic countries includes a non-probability (purposive sample) consist of (198) women. Which were selected according to inclusion criteria that are women in reproductive age, primiparous and multiparous mothers, and mothers who attended primary healthcare centers. Results Women are with average age of 32.23±7.9 years in which the highest percentage is seen with age group of 30-39 (40.4%). women have high affective barrier to avoid family planning methods (total grand mean= 2.60); have high behavioral barriers to avoid family planning methods (total grand mean= 2.56); and have high cognitive barriers to avoid family planning methods (total grand mean= 2.56). So, the mean scores indicate high among most of affective, behavioral, and cognitive barriers. Conclusions There are many potential barriers which can negatively impact the Middle East women’s decision about their reproductive life (affective, behavioral and cognitive) barriers. Despite the fact that family planning faces several challenges in the Middle East, governments and civil society organizations are working to find solutions to improve access to family planning services, promote education, hold candid conversations about reproductive health with local communities. Empowering the role of nurse in family planning to educate the couples about contraceptive methods and how to help them to choice the appropriate method.

Comparing the quality of life of adolescent girls with and without polycystic ovary syndrome and identifying the predictor factors.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex hormonal disorder that affects the endocrine glands and reproductive processes in adolescent girls, potentially impacting their quality of life. This study aims to compare the quality of life between adolescent girls with PCOS and those without PCOS. The present study is an analytical cross-sectional study. It involved 12-18-year-old girls who were diagnosed with PCOS based on the Rotterdam criteria for the case group. An ordinal logistic regression model was employed to assess the impact of the studied variables on different levels of quality of life, and Odds Ratio (OR) values were determined for predictor variables. The findings of the study revealed that the control group had a significantly higher percentage of individuals with excellent quality of life (score 209-260) compared to the group with polycystic ovary syndrome (p<0.05). The results of the ordinal logistic regression analysis indicated that age variables (OR=0.64, CI 95 %; 0.44-0.93), menstrual disorders (OR=0.07, CI 95 %; 0.01-0.38), and micromastia (OR=0.03, CI 95 %; 0.004-0.34) were identified as factors influencing the quality of life of girls with polycystic ovary syndrome. It was concluded that patients with PCOS had a lower quality of life score. The variables of age, menstrual disorders, and micromastia were determined as influencing factors the quality of life. The results of this study are significant and warrant further research in this area, particularly with regard to the financial resources of patients in the challenging economic circumstances facing the nation- the majority of which are brought on by economic sanctions.

Risk Factors for Decreased Bone Density in Adults with Celiac Disease

Background: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation in the intestine, causing atrophy of the mucosal villi of the small intestine. Celiac disease can manifest with various signs and symptoms, including extra-intestinal symptoms such as osteopenia and osteoporosis. Objectives: Our study aimed to determine the frequency of osteopenia/osteoporosis in newly diagnosed CD cases and to evaluate the effect of different independent variables on the development of osteopenia/osteoporosis in these patients. Methods: Adult patients with CD who were referred to a celiac clinic were evaluated for osteopenia/osteoporosis using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. This cross-sectional analytical study took place from October 2017 to July 2022. All adult participants underwent CD evaluation at the celiac clinic, a referral center in southern Iran. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the odds ratio (OR) of different independent variables for osteopenia/osteoporosis. Results: A total of 302 patients enrolled in this study, with 64.2% being female and 35.8% male. The mean ± SD age was 29.73 ± 12.39. Overall, 71.2% of patients had osteopenia or osteoporosis. The odds of developing osteopenia/osteoporosis were significantly higher in participants older than 30 years (OR: 2.19; 95% CI: 1.22 - 3.92; P = 0.008), underweight patients (OR: 2.38; 95% CI: 1.30 - 4.34; P = 0.005), and those with histologically severe atrophy (OR: 2.22; 95% CI: 1.14 - 4.32; P = 0.019). The mean ± SD serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D in CD patients without and with osteopenia/osteoporosis were 34.0 ± 17.1 ng/mL and 25.8 ± 14.2 ng/mL, respectively. Participants with normal levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D had a significantly lower OR of developing osteopenia/osteoporosis than patients with vitamin D deficiency (OR: 0.37; 95% CI: 0.21 - 0.62; P &lt; 0.001). Other variables, including gender, anti-tTG levels, and GI manifestations, did not significantly increase the OR of developing osteopenia/osteoporosis. Conclusions: The present study showed that increasing age, weight loss, severe villous atrophy, and low levels of vitamin D can significantly increase the OR of developing osteopenia/osteoporosis in CD patients. Until further studies are conducted, bone mineral density (BMD) evaluation is especially recommended in these high-risk subgroups of CD patients.

Health Promoting Behaviour among School Going Adolescents of Government School in Gaidakot, Nawalparasi

Background: A health-promoting behavior is an endpoint or action-outcome directed toward attaining positive healthoutcomes such as optimal wellbeing, personal fulfillment, and productive living. Adolescents make up as much as a quarterof the population and the number of adolescents is expected to rise through 2050. Adolescents are vulnerable to the riskfactors contributing to Noncommunicable diseases, whether from unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, exposure to tobaccosmoke or the harmful use of alcohol.Method: A cross sectional analytical study design was used among 89 adolescents of grade 9 and 10 was selected throughenumerative sampling technique. Data was collected using a self–administered questionnaire from Adolescent HealthPromoting – Short Form scale and entered in excel and analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version20.0 using Descriptive statistics (Frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation) and interferential statistics (chi-square).Result: Findings revealed that 48.3% respondents obtained below average mean score on health promoting behaviour.The overall mean ± S.D of status of health promoting behaviour was 68.12±8.847. Among 6 subscales, life appreciationobtained the highest mean score (with standard deviation) i.e. 15.35±3.72, whereas exercise obtained least mean score (withstandard deviation) i.e. 7.80±2.66 and there is statistically significant association with health promoting behaviours amongadolescents and educational status of mother (p=0.033).Conclusion: Overall health promoting behaviours among adolescents is below average so it is necessary to improve in areaslike nutrition and exercise. There is significant association between parental education and health promoting behavioursof the adolescents, so parental education should be improved by school committee, should introduce educational session,awareness program, physical activity program and nutrition exhibition program regarding health promoting behaviourssince early grade.

Impact of sperm DNA fragmentation in couples with unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss: A cross-sectional study.

Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) has a multifactorial etiology, with a majority of cases remaining unexplained. To account for these unexplained cases, possible male factors are being explored. Conventional semen analysis lacks a qualitative assessment of sperms and information regarding sperm DNA integrity. Sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) has diagnostic value in unexplained RPL, and it may account for a number of unexplained cases. Hence, we planned a study to explore and evaluate the impact of sperm DNA fragmentation in couples with unexplained recurrent pregnancy losses. Analytical cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary-level referral facility in India between August 2021 and July 2023. Participants (n = 70) were divided into two groups-male partners of couples with unexplained RPL (following spontaneous conceptions) (n = 35) and men with at least one previous live birth (spontaneous or following fertility treatments for female factor infertility such as ovulation induction or intrauterine insemination) as controls (n = 35). Neither of the two groups of couples recruited for this study had undergone ART as fertility treatment. Primary outcome assessed was mean DNA fragmentation index (DFI). Secondary outcomes included differences in semen parameters such as sperm concentration, progressive sperm motility and morphology, proportion of men with high (≥30%) and low DFI in the two groups, and the association between various semen parameters and DFI. Univariate logistic regression revealed that sperm DNA fragmentation was higher in men with unexplained RPL (30.0; IQR (interquartile range) 19.0, 46.0) as compared to controls (22.0; IQR 14.0, 30.0) although it was not statistically significant (OR, odds ratio, 1.02; 95% CI 1.0-1.1, p = 0.08). A higher proportion of men with unexplained RPL had DFI ≥30% compared to controls (54.2% vs. 25.7%; OR 3.43 (95% CI 1.2-9.4); p = 0.02). No statistically significant differences were observed in semen volume, sperm concentration, progressive motility, and morphology between the two groups. Sperm DNA fragmentation index also showed a weak but significant inverse relationship with sperm morphology (r = -0.336, p = 0.004). The current study did not show any significant difference in the mean sperm DNA fragmentation levels in male partners of couples with unexplained RPL compared to controls. However, a higher proportion of men with DFI ≥30% were observed in unexplained RPL population when compared to controls.

Epidemiology of obesity and influential factors in China: a multicenter cross-sectional study of children and adolescents

ObjectiveTo determine the prevalence of and risk factors for overweight and obese among Chinese children and adolescents.MethodsThis analytical cross-sectional study included 16,640 children and adolescents aged 6–18 years across four provinces of China in 2016. Physical characteristics and responses to questionnaires were analyzed. Body Mass Index (BMI) and the prevalence of overweight and obesity were calculated.ResultsAmong children and adolescents, the overall prevalence of overweight and obesity in 2016 in four regions of China was 27.2% and 29.6%, respectively. Among different stages and sexes, the highest prevalence of obesity (15.8%) was observed in adolescent boys. From childhood to adolescence, the obesity rate among boys increased by 0.7% (from 15.1% to 15.8%), while the obesity rate among girls decreased by 0.9% (from 10.8% to 9.9%). Children and adolescents who were overweight or obese had significantly higher systolic blood pressures, larger waist circumferences and larger hip sizes than those with a normal BMI. Logistic regression analyses identified thirteen factors associated with overweight or obesity in children and adolescents.ConclusionsOur results indicate that the prevalence of overweight and obesity is high among children and adolescents, especially among male adolescents in four regions of China. A suitable intervention program should not only help parents understand the serious risk of childhood obesity but also, more importantly, help to encourage a healthy lifestyle among children and adolescents.

Assessment of treatment needs, barriers, and self-perception regarding oral health among female university students: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundThe study aimed to compare the self-perceived oral health status measured through a self-administered questionnaire with clinically determined oral health status measured by decayed-missing-filled teeth (DMFT) and community periodontal index of treatment need (CPITN) indices in university going females. In addition, access barriers to treatment related to oral healthcare were also determined.MethodsA 3-month analytical cross-sectional study was designed for consenting university going females (aged 18–22 years) in Islamabad, Pakistan. The self-perceived oral health was recorded through a questionnaire requesting information regarding socio-demographics, self-perception of oral health, frequency of dental visits and barriers to seeking oral health. Seven independent examiners performed intraoral clinical examination and assessed the oral health status using globally standardized oral health assessment indices (DMFT and CPITN).ResultsA total of 400 students were included in the final sample. The study revealed a significant disparity between self-perceived oral health and clinical assessment. Although perceived oral health was considered “good” by 80.0% of the respondents, clinical examination revealed moderate DMFT scores (mean 2.95 ± 1.41) and periodontal disease requiring treatment in 89.5% of the individuals. The most common barriers in seeking dental care were lack of knowledge, dental phobia, affordability issue and false self-perception.ConclusionThe present study demonstrated a notable discrepancy between self-perception of oral health and clinically assessed oral health. These results emphasize the importance of focused educational programs and community outreach programs, especially directed towards this demographic. Prioritizing such initiatives will help individuals to recognize their actual oral health condition thus encouraging positive oral health behaviors and outcomes.

Knowledge and Awareness of Osteoporosis and Its Risk Factors Among the Adult Population in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: An Analytical Cross-Sectional Study.

Osteoporosis is a medical condition that affects the bones, causing them to become weak and fragile. People with osteoporosis are at a higher risk for fractures, resulting in an increase in morbidity and mortality rates. Despite its high prevalence worldwide, osteoporosis remains underdiagnosed and undertreated, leading to significant public health concerns, especially in Saudi Arabia. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted using an online questionnaire to assess the level of awareness of osteoporosis and its risk factors among the adult population in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire was distributed to a diverse, representative sample of 232 adults in Jeddah, covering demographic data, knowledge and awareness of osteoporosis and its risk factors, and lifestyle practices related to prevention and management. Data were analyzed using IBM Corp. Released 2013. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp., employing descriptive analysis, cross-tabulation, and chi-square tests to evaluate knowledge levels and associated factors. A total of 232 eligible adults participated, with a mean age of 35.6 ± 8.7 years. Most participants, 228 (98.3%), had heard of osteoporosis, and 137 (59.1%) had good overall knowledge of the disease. Key risk factors identified included calcium deficiency (210, 90.5%), increasing age (171, 73.7%), and family history (136, 58.6%). Although most participants accurately identified common risk factors, only 10.8% of participants consistently practiced a healthy and active lifestyle, highlighting the gap between awareness and preventive behaviors. Our study showed that gender (p-value = 0.049), educational level (p-value = 0.044), and whether the participant was diagnosed with or knew someone diagnosed with osteoporosis (p-value = 0.045) were statistically significant factors associated with the overall level of knowledge of osteoporosis in the participants. This study emphasized the need for targeted interventions to improve knowledge and promote healthier lifestyle habits among adults in Jeddah to reduce the burden of osteoporosis. Future efforts should focus on bridging the gap between awareness and preventive actions, emphasizing the importance of healthy lifestyle habits and knowledge of osteoporosis risk factors.

The relationship of perceived nurse manager competence with job satisfaction and turnover intention among clinical nurses: an analytical cross-sectional study

BackgroundNursing managers have the potential to significantly impact the outcomes of nurses, patients, and organizations. Their competencies for effective performance are crucial. The global nursing workforce is facing a severe shortage of nurses. Dissatisfaction with management is one of the most important reasons for nurses’ inclination to leave their jobs. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between nursing managers’ competencies, job satisfaction and intention to leave among clinical nurses.MethodsAn analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 354 nurses in five hospitals affiliated with Ardabil University of Medical Sciences from May to August 2023. This research used web-based software to design demographic information forms, nurse manager competency scale, turnover intention, and single-item job satisfaction questionnaires. The significance level for the study was set at p < 0.05.ResultsThis study revealed that participants had an average score of 3.06 out of 5 in perceived nurse manager competence. Only one-fourth of the participants (25.7%) were satisfied with their current job, and less than half (46.9%) intended to leave. Employee support and development, change and resource management, supervision and quality monitoring, and personal mastery positively influenced nurses’ job satisfaction. These competencies hurt employees’ intention to leave their jobs.ConclusionsThe research findings indicate that nursing managers in Iran have lower competency than in previous studies. Developing and strengthening these competencies is very important, as it significantly improves job satisfaction and reduces nurses’ tendency to leave their jobs. Additionally, the results show that nursing managers who excel in supporting and developing staff, resource management, quality supervision, and personal mastery positively impact nurses’ job satisfaction. However, these competencies can also help reduce employees’ intention to leave their jobs. Retaining and maintaining nurses in the healthcare field is of utmost importance.

Prevalence and factors associated with unhealthy metabolic status according to body mass index: analysis of a national nutritional survey

IntroductionAlthough obesity substantially influences public health owing to related comorbidities, it has been discovered that the incidence of such issues is not directly related to obesity but to the patient’s unhealthy metabolic status (MUS) independent of the body mass index (BMI).ObjectivesTo describe the prevalence of UMS overall and according to BMI and determine the factors associated with it.MethodsA cross-sectional analytical study was used based on the analysis of secondary databases called the Life Stage Nutritional Surveillance Survey (VIANEV). Participants were selected in two stages, finally obtaining 885 participants. UMS was defined based on the criteria of the Adult Treatment Panel III used to define metabolic status in a set of 5 parameters, if the subject presented two or more alterations it was considered UMS. Six groups were formed according to BMI: metabolically healthy, average weight (MHNW) and unhealthy (MUNW), metabolically healthy, overweight (MHOW) and unhealthy (MUOW), metabolically healthy, obese (MHO) and unhealthy (MUO).).ResultsThe total prevalence of UMS was 73.11%, with MUNW, MUOW, and MUO being 47.90%, 80.34%, and 96.44%, respectively. Only 5.31% did not present any metabolic alteration. The multivariable analysis found variations globally according to sex, age, marital status, geographical region, smoking habit, and altitude.ConclusionsA high prevalence of UMS was observed in Peru, indicating that BMI alone is not a sufficient indicator of metabolic status. These findings suggest that strategies should be prioritized to address the growing problem of UMS, considering the particularities of each subpopulation and using a multifaceted approach that addresses modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors.

Vitamin D Deficiency as a Factor Associated with Neuropathic Pain in Multibacillary Type Morbus Hansen

Objective: Morbus Hansen (MH), caused by Mycobacterium leprae, is marked by neuropathic pain. Prior studies link low vitamin D levels to diabetic neuropathic pain, yet research on its role in MH-related neuropathic pain is limited. This study investigates the role of vitamin D deficiency in MH-related neuropathic pain. Materials and Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among multibacillary (MB) MH patients at Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah Hospital, Bali from April to August 2023. Neuropathic pain was assessed using the Douleur Neuropathique 4 (DN4) questionnaire, while serum 25(OH)D levels determined vitamin D status. The cutoff for deficiency was determined via ROC curve analysis. Results: Among 42 participants, those without neuropathic pain exhibited higher mean serum vitamin D levels than those with neuropathic pain (28.69 ± 8.16 vs. 22.11 ± 9.54 ng/ml; p=0.021). The ROC curve identified a cutoff value of 30.25 ng/ml, categorizing participants into vitamin D deficiency (&lt;30.25 ng/ml) and non-deficiency (≥30.25 ng/ml) groups. Bivariate analysis revealed a heightened incidence of neuropathic pain among MH patients with serum vitamin D levels below the designated cutoff point (OR: 6.60; 95%CI: 1.484-29.355; p=0.022). Multivariate analysis indicated that two variables significantly correlated with neuropathic pain in MH patients: vitamin D deficiency (OR: 14.337; 95%CI: 2.431-84.542; p=0.003) and peripheral nerve enlargement (OR: 12.564; 95%CI: 2.096-75.307; p=0.006). Conclusion: Disparities in average vitamin D levels were observed between MH patients with and without neuropathic pain. Vitamin D deficiency, alongside peripheral nerve enlargement, emerged as significant risk factors for neuropathic pain in MH patients.

Notable correlation between serum epidermal growth factor values and inflammatory status in patients with COVID-19.

Despite its crucial role in Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) activation, and the resulting impact on the health-disease process, epidermal growth factor (EGF) is an underexplored molecule in relation to how its serum concentrations relate to other analytes and clinical variables in pathological contexts. To clarify the possible correlation between EGF and clinical and analytical variables in the context of COVID-19. Cross-sectional observational and analytical study, in patients with virological and clinical diagnosis of COVID-19, selected by simple random sampling, admitted between August and September 2021. UMELISA-EGF commercial kits were used. Differences in overall EGF values were observed between groups (566.04 vs. 910.53 pg/ml, p = .0430). In COVID-19 patients, no notable correlations were observed for neutrophil, platelet, triglyceride or liver enzyme values (p > .05). Significant correlations were observed with the neutrophil-lymphocyte indicator (r = 0.4711, p = .0128) as well as with the platelet-lymphocyte index (r = 0.4553, p = .0155). Statistical results of multivariate regression analysis suggest NLR (β = .2232, p = .0353) and PLR (β = .2117, p = .0411) are predictors of inflammation in patients with COVID-19. Serum EGF concentrations in COVID-19 correlate positively with prognostic inflammatory markers of severity and could presumably act as an independent risk factor for the development of inflammation in response to new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Knowledge, attitude, and practice of artificial intelligence applications in medicine among physicians in Sudan: a national cross-sectional survey.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a rapidly developing tool within the medical landscape, globally aiding in diagnosis and healthcare management. However, its integration within healthcare systems remains varied across different regions. In Sudan, there exists a burgeoning interest in AI potential applications within medicine. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of AI applications in medicine among physicians in Sudan. The authors conducted a web-based survey cross-sectional analytical study using an online questionnaire-based survey regarding demographic details, knowledge, attitudes, and practice of AI distributing through various e-mail listings and social media platforms. A sample of 825 Physicians including doctors in Sudan with different ranks and specialties were selected using the convenient non-probability sampling technique. Out of 825 Physicians, 666 (80.7%) of Physicians have previous knowledge about AI. However, only a small number 123 (14.9%) were taught about AI during their time in medical school, even fewer, just 120 (14.5%) had AI-related lessons in their training program. Regarding attitude, 675 (81.8%) agree that AI is very important in medicine, almost the same number, 681 (82.6%) support the idea of teaching AI in medical schools. Practically, 535 (64.8%) of doctors, think that should get special training in using AI tools in healthcare. Excitingly 651 (78.9%) of physicians are interested in working with AI in future. Based on different ranks of doctors toward AI; Medical Officers exhibited the highest proportion at (32.7%) of knowledge and understanding of AI concepts, followed by House Officers at (16.7%) (p=0.076); regarding attitude, Medical Officers demonstrated the highest (31.6%) favorable attitude, followed by House Officers at (17.5%) (p=0.229); In practice also, Medical Officer showed the highest portion (28.0%) among participants (p=0.129). While there is a positive attitude and some level of AI practice, there remains a considerable gap in knowledge that needs addressing.

Women's preferences and experiences of birthing practices in Turkey: A cross-sectional study.

In this study, the aim was to evaluate the preferences and experiences interventions among women in Turkey. A total of 347 women who gave birth vaginally participated in this analytical cross-sectional study. Data were collected using the face-to-face interview technique in the clinic rooms within the first 24 hours after delivery, when the women's babies were asleep, allowing the mothers to comfortably answer the questions before discharge. The arithmetic mean, standard deviation and number-percentage distributions of the data were calculated. Of them, 81% had a positive birth experience at birth. The majority of the participating women did not want to undergo non-evidence based interventions with a limited effect during the intrapartum period. While evidence-based intrapartum care is provided, women's preferences should be taken into account, they should be informed about evidence-based interventions and these interventions should be performed during the intrapartum period.

Self-Perceived Quality of Life (WHOQOL-Bref), and Self-Reported Health, Social and Environmental Factors Related to Its Improvement among Residents of Anil, Rio de Janeiro-Cross-Sectional Study.

This study aims to assess the self-perception of the QoL (WHOQOL-bref) in the Canal of Anil zone and its neighbor zone of the center of the District of Anil in Rio de Janeiro and to identify which factors are associated with the population self-perception of the need to "improve" their quality of life (QoL). A cross-sectional observational analytical study was carried out after approval by the competent ethics committee (CEP/CONEP) approval. A non-probabilistic sampling of residents of the Canal of Anil (n = 494) and the central district of Anil (n = 250) was used. A questionnaire was administered in person to collect data on self-reported sociodemographic characteristics, general health, sanitation, lifestyle in the residential area, and the WHOQOL-Bref. Although with a worse self-perceived water/sanitation participants in the Anil Canal community report fewer allergies, less medication, fewer skin diseases, less Zika virus, and less Chikungunya, among others. The self-perception of the need to improve the QoL in the Anil Canal community and the zone at the central District of Anil has proved to be influenced by several social and economic factors as well as residential practices and conditions. The multivariate analysis allowed us to identify both modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for the need to improve physical QoL: taking medication, respiratory problems, skin disease diagnosed by a doctor, having a water tank at home or having filtered water at home, unpleasant odor of the water of the Anil Canal and the level of education, and age. Regarding the need to improve the environmental QoL, both areas are largely modifiable (e.g., having had ascariasis/roundworm; having a water tank in the house; not drinking bottled water; not having pavements in the street). Sociodemographic and environmental factors, in addition to health conditions, play a pivotal role in influencing individuals' perceptions of the necessity for enhanced physical and environmental well-being.

Medical education for undergraduate research: Proposals from the experience of two national student conferences of the Universidad de Valparaíso.

Scientific research promotes the development of essential skills for medical practice. However, student participation in research projects is low, with multiple limitations and students' perceptions of deficient research skills. This study aims to describe the organization of the two medical student conferences held by the Scientific Society of Medical Students of the Universidad de Valparaíso and to analyze the papers presented. Finally, we make recommendations for promoting scientific research among medical students. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted, including all the presentations given at the conferences. The conferences comprised four phases: registration, evaluation, selection, and presentation. A total of 399 papers were received. A total of 157 case reports and 12 cross-sectional studies were presented, including 797 authors (56.7% women) from 21 universities. Most of the first authors were women in the internship cycle at public universities. The specialties with the highest representation were internal medicine (32.5%), pediatrics (18.3%) and surgery (13%). In the case reports, the best-evaluated section was the title (6.66 ± 0.76), and the worst-evaluated section was the discussion (6.17 ± 0.84). The case reports from private universities scored significantly higher in six of the eight items assessed. Greater participation was represented by students in their internship cycle presenting case reports. The worst evaluated section was the discussion, which could reflect difficulties in the research process. It is crucial to increase student participation from the first years of the career and encourage their involvement in research. More studies are needed to evaluate student participation and barriers to scientific research.

Evaluation of estriol levels in women with preeclampsia in Nnewi, South-East Nigeria

Preeclampsia is a life-threatening pregnancy-induced disorder characterized by the presence of hypertension and proteinuria occurring after 20 weeks of gestation in a previously normotensive and aproteinuric woman. This study is aimed at investigating the maternal serum levels of estriol in pregnant women with preeclampsia. This is an analytical cross-sectional study including a total of 90 pregnant women aged 18-41years at 26-40 weeks of gestation, according to the last date of menstruation and ultrasonographic measurements. Forty five of these were preeclamptic while the other forty five were apparently healthy individuals. Preeclampsia was determined by proteinuria ≥30mg/dl or ≥1+ using a urine dipstick and sphygmomanometer blood pressure reading of ≥ 140/90 mmHg using ausculatory method. BMI was calculated from weight and height measurements of each participant. Estriol (E3) levels were determined utilizing the double-antibody sandwich enzyme linked immunosorbent assay technique. Hypothesis testing was done using the student’s t-test for continuous variables, Chi-square test for categorical variables and Pearson’s correlation for the tests of association. Statistical significance was set at p&lt;0.05. The mean serum values of E3 were significantly lower in women with preeclampsia (124.18±22.40) compared with the apparently healthy control counterparts (141.41±20.68, p&lt;0.001). A moderate negative correlation was observed between maternal serum estriol level and BMI in the preeclamptic group (r = -0.589; p&lt;0.001). There existed a strong negative correlation between maternal serum estriol level and systolic (r = -0.738; p&lt;0.001) as well as diastolic (r = -0.711; p&lt;0.001) blood pressures in women with preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is associated with lower maternal serum levels of estriol which may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of the disorder.
