Simple 40 Gbit/s all-optical XOR gate

An all-optical XOR gate at 40 Gbit/s is demonstrated using ultrafast nonlinear interferometers (UNI) incorporating semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), where no additional probe beam is required. The only inputs launched into the setup are the data A and B. The XOR logic of the data A and B is the sum of two components ĀB and AB̄, each of which is obtained from the output of UNI via cross-phase modulation in SOAs. The SOA switching pulse energy is lower than 33 fJ.

All-optical NOR gates with two and three input logic signals based on cross-polarization modulation in a semiconductor optical amplifier

In this work we present all-optical NOR gates with two and three input logic signals using the cross-polarization modulation (XPolM) effect in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The gates utilize a single SOA and it needs neither an inversion stage nor an additional synchronized clock. Unlike the gates based on cross-gain and cross-phase modulation in SOAs, the gates presented in this work need neither interforemetric configurations nor input logic signals producing a strong saturation of the amplifier gain. Based on a discussion of the XPolM effect, we present the design criteria allowing the implementation of the all-optical NOR gates with two and three input logic signals.

Study on the dynamic range of input power for wavelength converter based on cross-phase modulation in SOAs

In this paper, the dynamic range of input power for wavelength converter based on cross-phase modulation (XPM) in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is studied. The dynamic range of input power is associated with the linewidth enhancement factor α, which is influenced by optical wavelength and power. Shorter wavelength and larger power can induce smaller α and lead to a larger dynamic range, while the gain modulation is more severe. Through dynamically controlling the current of the phase arm of the XPM wavelength converter by the detection of the input signal power level, the dynamic range of input power can be increased from 2 to 17 dB.

160 Gbit/s all-optical demultiplexer using hybrid gain-transparent SOA Mach-Zehnder interferometer

The authors report on a 160 Gbit/s all-optical demultiplexer based on gain-transparent cross-phase modulation in semiconductor-optical amplifiers. The switch comprises a hybridly set up Mach-Zehnder interferometer with switching windows as short as 2.5 ps and an input power dynamic range of 50 dB.
