Research trends on forensic entomology for five decades worldwide

Forensic entomology, the study of insects and arthropods in criminal investigations, is crucial for estimating postmortem intervals, determining changes in corpse positioning, and identifying causes of death. This study analyzes global research trends in forensic entomology using data from the Scopus database spanning 1970 to 2024, with data visualized through VOSviewer. A total of 2,261 articles were identified, with an average productivity of 42 papers per year. The leading countries in forensic entomology research are the United States (n = 444), Brazil (n = 266), China (n = 198), the United Kingdom (n = 194), and Germany (n = 156). Current hot topics in the field include pupae, feeding behavior, beetles, and genetics. These findings underscore the ongoing interest and advancements in forensic entomology, highlighting its significance and diverse applications in criminal investigations.

Estimation of Stature from Anthropometric Measurements of the Sternum in Nepalese Population at the Tertiary Health Care Hospital

Introduction: Stature estimation is crucial for identifying human remains in forensic and anthropological contexts, aiding in mass casualties, criminal investigations, and archaeological studies. Traditionally using long bones, alternative methods are necessary when these bones are unavailable or fragmented. Objectives: The main purpose of this study was to access the morphometric measurements of the study population and compare the findings between the two sexes. Method: A study of 100 medico-legal autopsies at Department of Forensic Medicine, Maharajgunj Medical Campus, Nepal investigated stature estimation from sternal lengths. During autopsies, cadaver length was measured using a steel tape. An incision was made from the suprasternal notch to the pubis, the sternum was removed, and the combined manubrium and mesosternum length was measured with sliding callipers. Results: The study included 67 male and 33 female cadavers, with a mean age of 37.46 years. The mean length of the manubrium was 43.34 ± 6.88 mm (44.58 ± 7.15 mm for males, 40.81 ± 5.59 mm for females). The mesosternum averaged 101.85 ± 15.65 mm (104.40 ± 16.68 mm for males, 96.66 ± 11.92 mm for females). The combined sternal length was 146.12 ± 16.64 mm. Body length correlated weakly but significantly with manubrium, mesosternum, and combined sternal lengths (r = 0.242, 0.206, 0.320 respectively). Conclusion: Stature estimation from sternal length is valuable for identifying mass casualty victims, with males showing greater measurements. Combined manubrium and mesosternum lengths are better stature estimators.

Law Enforcement Agency Practices and Policies for the Investigation of Child Sex Trafficking: Are Agencies Using Victim-Centered Approaches?

AbstractOver the past decade, efforts have been made to reform the way in which law enforcement responds to child sex trafficking (CST). Law enforcement agencies are being urged or required to use victim-centered approaches that provide exploited youth with support and services. However, researchers have yet to empirically examine law enforcement’s recognition of CST at the agency-level, their arrest practices, or the services that are being offered to CST victims. We have little information about the utilization and effectiveness of various law enforcement agency policies, practices and training programs related to CST. The National Law Enforcement Agency Child Sex Trafficking (LEA-CST) Study aimed to address these gaps through a national survey of law enforcement agencies around the U.S. The current study reports on mail survey data collected from a sample of 1,306 agencies that provided feedback on the use of up to nine victim-centered approaches to CST at their agency. Data were analyzed along with information about whether their agency investigated at least one case of CST in the year 2021. Almost all agencies (97.5%) said they used or had access to at least one victim-centered approach to CST investigations, with larger agencies reporting a greater number of approaches. Two policies were significantly related to a greater likelihood of investigating at least one case of CST in 2021: Access to a CST-specific task force and access to a CST-specific victim service agency. Findings document a growing orientation to these cases by law enforcement that recognizes youth victimization, with innovative approaches to identification and support. Community collaboration appears to be critical to helping to identify, support and provide justice to CST victims.Research Summary This study examined law enforcement’s recognition of CST at the agency-level, their arrest practices, and the services that are being offered to CST victims. Among 1,306 agencies across the United States, almost all (97.5%) said they used or had access to at least one victim-centered approach to CST investigations, with larger agencies reporting a greater number of approaches. Advancements in Digital Forensics: A Quantitative Analysis of Cell Tower Triangulation Techniques

This study delves into the accuracy and reliability of Cell Tower Triangulation (CTT) in digital forensics, employing a diverse sample of mobile devices across various real-world scenarios—criminal investigations, missing persons, and corporate security breaches. By simulating these situations, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of CTT’s effectiveness in urban and rural settings. Data was meticulously collected on signal strength, tower locations, and timestamps, and analyzed using statistical methods to assess CTT accuracy and reliability. Findings from descriptive statistics, comparative analyses, precision metrics, and correlation analyses reveal significant insights into CTT’s application in digital forensics. Despite certain limitations in precision, indicated by the variability in virtual triangle sizes, the study underscores the potential of CTT in supporting investigations while also highlighting the importance of ethical considerations and legal compliance. This research contributes to the advancement of digital forensics, offering a nuanced understanding of CTT’s capabilities and limitations.

The effect of handedness and biological sex on fingermark ridge height and volume as examined by 3D imaging.

For decades, detectives and forensic scientists have relied on friction ridge skin comparisons to identify individuals in criminal investigations. This method involves examining (latent) fingermarks, typically captured as two-dimensional (2D) images, and comparing them with known inked impressions or scans. The comparisons focus on general patterns, the location and orientation of minutiae, and additional characteristics like scars or pores. However, this common process overlooks other potentially valuable factors, such as handedness, biological sex, and the time since deposition, which could provide crucial investigative leads, especially in cases with partial or unclear ridge patterns. This study explored the potential of three-dimensional (3D) optical profilometry (OP) to observe changes in fingermarks ridge height and volume over 7 days while considering hand dominance and biological sex. The results indicated that all the assessed 3D metrics were generally consistent in detecting the effects of sex and handedness, mostly noticeable on aged fingermarks. Specifically, females and impressions from their non-dominant hand exhibited higher values. Additionally, the influence of time was evident, with fresh fingermarks showing significantly larger ridges in terms of height and volume. These findings suggest that 3D OP can enhance the probative value of fingermarks by inferring additional characteristics such as sex, handedness, and the age of the impression. These activity-level propositions could provide useful information in cases where only partial or poor-quality fingermarks are recovered, providing new data dimensions that could lead to more comprehensive forensic examinations.

Postmortem interval estimation of human skeletonized remains through luminol chemiluminescence.

Postmortem interval (PMI) estimation represents a significant challenge in the forensic sciences, particularly when dealing with human skeletal remains. A screening protocol for distinguishing possible remains of forensic interest is a crucial tool for judicial purposes. In this context, luminol chemiluminescence emerges as a promising method, with low overall costs and required time. This method is primarily used as a presumptive test, based on the understanding that the intensity of the chemiluminescence reactions decreases with an increase in the postmortem interval, thus underlining its practical implications.This research aims to expand previous research on the potential of luminol chemiluminescence, evaluating its usefulness in estimating PMI. Our sample comprised 239 human clavicles, with known PMI. The luminol solution was sprayed on each powder bone sample in a dark room, observed by the naked eye and photographed. The intensity of the chemiluminescence reaction was measured using a binary and a 5-level scale.The present results reveal that this method is a suitable tool for PMI estimation as a presumptive test, reducing time and costs in criminal investigations. The findings underscore the high sensitivity of luminol chemiluminescence for detecting recent PMI but also highlight a notable incidence of false positives. Thus, our results confirm luminol chemiluminescence as a powerful tool for dating time of death, particularly for identifying forensic relevant remains. Still, the relatively low specificity indicates that it should be complemented with additional tests for further confirmation and scientific validation of the remains' forensic relevance.

New Technologies in Search and Seizure

The Fourth Amendment and court cases interpreting it provide guidelines for how law enforcement should legally approach searching for and taking evidence in criminal investigations. Though it originally applied to physical intrusion by law enforcement, current—and likely future—intrusions are more virtual in nature. Law enforcement officers no longer need to walk onto someone's property to search for criminal activity because various technologies now provide similar or more in-depth information. Technological innovations have stretched the bounds of the Fourth Amendment. Although public opinion cannot answer the policy implications, it can speak to what the public reasonably expects of the police. In general, limited research demonstrates that the public has concerns about the way law enforcement officers can use technology in their investigations, but those concerns are not strong enough to decrease individuals’ technology use.

Eyewitness memory for person, object and action information is mediated by interview environment and the presence or absence of rapport

Purpose Obtaining accurate and reliable information from witnesses and victims of crime is essential for guiding criminal investigations and for the successful prosecution of offenders and beyond. Here, the purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of prosocial rapport behaviours and retrieval environment on mock eyewitness memory with an emphasis on the qualitative nature of information recalled in terms of persons, actions, objects and surroundings. Design/methodology/approach One hundred participants from the general population took part in mock witness research using a 2 (Environment: face-to-face; virtual) × 2 (Rapport: present; absent) design. Participants individually viewed an event depicting a fight in a bar and were then interviewed 48 h later according to condition. Findings Rapport and environment variously emerged as impactful, resulting in significant improvements in correct recall of persons, actions and object information when rapport was present and in virtual environments (VEs) when communicating via avatars. In many instances, the benefits of rapport and environment were additive, but not always. Surroundings information remained consistent across all conditions. Erroneous recall was extremely susceptible to inflation in face-to-face interviews when rapport was absent, in some instances increasing by over 100%. However, virtual interview spaces appeared to dilute the negative effects on retrieval when rapport was absent. Research limitations/implications This study concurs with others who have argued that comfortable witnesses are “better” witnesses; however, understanding what “comfort” looks and feels like remains a challenge. Practical implications The results, alongside the findings of others, have implications for applied and social cognition and reveal avenues for future research centred on widening access to justice and professional interview training. Originality/value This study reveals that prosocial rapport behaviours and VEs significantly enhance the accuracy of eyewitness recall. The findings suggest that virtual interviews can mitigate errors in the absence of rapport, offering valuable insights for criminal investigators and legal professionals. This research is crucial for improving witness interviewing techniques, thereby aiding in the accurate prosecution of offenders and broadening access to justice. The paper is valuable for criminal investigators, legal professionals, forensic psychologists and researchers focused on improving the reliability of eyewitness testimonies and interview methodologies.

Down the banking hole: Investigating the case of Slovenian banks

The aim of this paper is to analyse who was responsible for the deterioration of the Slovenian banking sector to such an extent that it was almost destroyed by the 2008 financial crisis, necessitating the consideration of an international bailout. A literature review focused specifically on reports from law enforcement agencies and commissions that investigated banking practices, complemented by a qualitative empirical study. In order to gain insight into the reasons why this situation unfolded, ten structured interviews were conducted. The interviewees included experts with experience in the fields of prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of economic crime, bad credit management, central banking, parliamentary committee management, forensic investigations, investigative journalism, and experts with academic knowledge in law and economics. Five different investigations explored the behaviour of banking sector actors before, during, and after the 2008 financial crisis. These investigations revealed behaviours ranging from negligence to criminal acts. The interviews indicated that the perpetrators were individuals of high social status with significant influence, explaining why people are often not willing to testify against them. On the detection and prosecution front, the main challenges were fears among criminal investigators, prosecutors, judges, and others of retaliation from superiors, job loss, and being publicly lambasted in the media.

Role of Artificial Intelligence in Forensics

Concurrently forensic science applies scientific methodologies to criminal investigations, specifically concentrating on analyzing evidence within criminal cases. The conventional methods of conducting autopsies and forming opinions exhibit numerous limitations, many of which can be effectively addressed through AI integration. Digital forensics stands out as one of the most rapidly advancing technologies, profoundly influencing the techniques and tools employed for analyzing, monitoring and visualizing crime scenes to mitigate emerging threats and cyber-attacks. Moreover, the realm encompasses forensic medicine, which applies medical expertise to administer justice in Legal proceedings, thereby resolving associate legal complexities. Leveraging the capabilities of AI enables the swift and through sorting of files without manual intervention, significantly expediting investigative processes. Furthermore,AI plays a pivotal role in the identification of mutilated bodies, facilitating the development of tools to reconstruct full facial features. AI generated images can provide remarkable resemblances, aiding in accurately depicting facial features to aid identification efforts. Integrating AI into forensic practices enhances efficiency, accuracy and overall effectiveness in resolving criminal cases

The use of electronic evidence in the criminal process of foreign countries

It is emphasized that electronic evidence has become indispensable for criminal investigations and trials around the world. The importance of legal regulation of the criminal procedural form of digital technologies is emphasized. The improper nature of such regulation entails certain legal consequences, including the recognition of electronic evidence as improper or inadmissible. The experience of some foreign countries in the field of recognition and use of electronic evidence (the USA, Great Britain, the People’s Republic of China and the countries of the European Union) is analyzed. It has been proven that each state builds its own way and approach to incorporating such evidence into its legal systems depending on legal traditions, technological infrastructure and privacy considerations. From the analysis of procedural codes, it was noted that procedural science develops a theory of electronic evidence according to the industry principle. It is emphasized that they are based on common digital technologies, therefore this provides an opportunity to develop uniform cross­industry rules for the use of electronic evidence in any process. It was determined that in the Anglo-Saxon legal system there is no clear division of evidence into types. Evidence law is based on typical problem situations. The US legislation, which regulates the use of electronic evidence in the criminal process, is analyzed. It is noted that the condition for their acceptance is its authenticity and relevance to the case. It is noted that in the UK, all electronic evidence is subject to the same rules and laws that apply to documentary evidence. The legislation of the European Union, which regulates electronic evidence and allows to strengthen cooperation between member states in the field of using electronic evidence, is analyzed. It is emphasized that as states continue to adapt to the age of digital technologies, the development of a reliable legal framework and international cooperation will be essential to ensure the effective and fair use of electronic evidence in the pursuit of justice.

“What you say in the lab, stays in the lab”: A reflexive thematic analysis of current challenges and future directions of digital forensic investigations in the UK

Despite digital evidence nowadays playing a major role in criminal investigations and being intrinsic to almost every criminal trial, research in digital forensics (DF) and national approaches to digital evidence in relation to investigating officers and court personnel remain almost non-existent. This research seeks to remedy this issue by qualitatively examining the accounts and experiences of 16 digital forensic investigators (DFIs) in England and Wales who took part in semi-structured interviews. We analyzed the data using a reflexive thematic analysis and identified four overarching themes: (i) Navigating tensions with investigating officers (that has a subtheme of ‘Tensions with legal professionals and challenges navigating court theatrics’) (ii) The psychological, emotional, and existential challenges confronted by DFIs; (iii) Identifying the potential and pitfalls of automation and AI in DF and (iv) The centrality of academia in the advancement of DF (that has a subtheme of ‘Validation of tools as a crucial step in digital forensics’). These new findings reveal that DFIs encounter significant demands to perform well and are continuously overburdened while juggling many roles. This research serves as a pivotal starting point for broader discussions.

A Survey on Mobile Digital Forensic: Taxonomy, Tools, and Challenges

ABSTRACTModern time largely rely on mobile gadgets as a means of communication, and entertainment. These gadgets now plays a vital role in forensic analysis and criminal investigations as it store a plethora of private and sensitive data. Investigating feasible digital incidents and preserving mobile device security became crucial as the proliferation of mobile devices continues to influence modern society. In this survey; mobile threats, investigative process models for mobile forensics, evidence sources, forensics tools, and field problems are all covered in‐depth. Further, a comprehensive analysis examining the capabilities, features, and efficiency of available distinct mobile forensic tools namely Belkasoft, MOBILedit, and Magnet AXIOM for retrieving, analyzing, and presenting digital evidence is being presented. The objective of the study is to assist forensic investigators in choosing the best tool for specific investigations. The findings of our study reveals the complexity of mobile operating systems, investigative process supported with sources of evidence, and forensic tools which makes it clear that the area of mobile forensics is dynamic and require modern skill adaptation along and innovative development in future. Finally, the study presents current challenges encountered during mobile forensic investigations as researchers can enhance their procedures and tactics for mobile device examination and evidence extraction by fostering a greater knowledge of the difficulties involved in mobile forensics.

Advancing justice: The impact of Brazil’s convict genetic profile identification project after 5 years

This comprehensive study analyzed the implementation and impacts of the Convict Genetic Profile Identification Project in Brazil. By examining semiannual reports from the Integrated Network of DNA Databases (RIBPG) alongside a literature review covering the period from January 2018 to February 2024, the study evaluated the project’s relevance. The project’s primary aim was to enhance DNA databases, thereby fortifying crime prevention and resolution efforts. Notably, the results revealed a substantial increase in genetic profiles of convicted offenders included into the Brazilian National DNA Database (from 2,008 in 2017 to 54,657 in 2019) − a development that aligns with legislative goals. Despite legal and ethical debates, the project demonstrated a positive impact on criminal investigations, with a notable rise in database matches (from 376 in 2017 to 1,418 in 2019). Scientific literature had highlighted the project’s effectiveness in resolving crimes. The project has matured into a well-established process, characterized by continuous insertions and advancements, emphasizing a comprehensive operational framework. Beyond quantitative milestones, it has made qualitative contributions to justice. This collaborative model serves as an example for impactful public policies under Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security.

Forensic evidence in sexual assault laws: a content analysis of state statutes in the United States of America

ABSTRACT The collection of forensic evidence is perceived to be a panacea in sexual assault investigations and criminal prosecutions. However, research has shown an alarmingly different reality, whereby forensic evidence is rarely available, collected, tested, or available during criminal investigations and court procedures. Regardless, many states have begun implementing new policies to improve the collection and preservation of forensic evidence. This study explores the state of forensic evidence policies and legislation throughout the United States of America as they relate to sexual assaults through a content analysis of the nation’s state statutes. Following the 2016 legislative session statutes were found to be organized into two themes: 1) survivor-related statutes and 2) offender-related statutes. Though innovative forensic evidence policies were observed, much of this legislation appeared to be inconsistent with the reality of sexual assault and is best described as vague and inadequate. In view of these observations, this paper discusses policy implications and areas of future research.

A New Right to Procedural Accuracy: A Governance Model for Digital Evidence in Criminal Proceedings

This paper motivates and studies the feasibility of a new digital right to procedural accuracy (RPA) for digital evidence processing in criminal investigations. The need to guarantee a new principle of procedural accuracy under Art. 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) is based on the concern that digital forensic science and AI technology have a significant impact on individuals’ rights in criminal proceedings, which are neither coherently nor comprehensively addressed. The personal and material scope of RPA are examined and include: (i) protection against unreliable digital evidence processing; (ii) right to access the chain of evidence, explanation, and forensic assistance; and (iii) the right to participate in the determinative stages of the digital evidence processing. Limitations of the RPA are also discussed.

Challenges Encountered by Police Officers During Crime Investigations

This study highlights the vital function of police officers involved in criminal investigations in maintaining the integrity of Indian society through effective law enforcement and fair justice. However, it identifies several obstacles that impede their efficiency, including heavy workloads, lack of adequate resources, shortage of officers, external pressures, and technological limitations, particularly when addressing serious crimes, cybercrimes, and offences involving cryptocurrency. These issues contribute to decreased morale among officers who investigate crimes and increase public distrust, especially amidst growing media scrutiny. Furthermore, the psychological strain of handling complex cases worsens these challenges. The study calls for comprehensive reforms to alleviate workloads, enhance the number of investigative officers, increase the sanctioned strength of police officers, improve resource allocation, integrate technology into investigations, and create a more efficient and culturally sensitive police system. Implementing these reforms is essential for strengthening investigative capabilities, adapting to the changing criminal landscape of the 21st century, and ensuring law enforcement's dedication to safeguarding the integrity of Indian society.

HUMAN RIGHTS AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE

Human rights in criminal processing are crucial for ensuring justice and protecting individual freedoms within legal systems. This paper examines the integration of human rights standards throughout various stages of criminal processing, from arrest and investigation to trial and sentencing. It highlights key rights, such as the right to be free from torture and inhumane treatment, the right to legal representation, the right to be informed of charges, and the presumption of innocence. The influence of international human rights instruments, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), on shaping national policies and practices is explored. Additionally, the paper addresses contemporary issues such as discrimination, wrongful convictions, and the impact of technological advancements on privacy rights. The study underscores the need for continuous reforms and robust oversight mechanisms to ensure that criminal processing aligns with human rights principles, ultimately fostering a fair and equitable justice system.

Investigating ownership and assets is another critical part of the money laundering detection methodology. This includes checks on the properties and assets of suspicious individuals and organizations. Investigators look into property, patents, company ownership and other assets to prove the links between them and the origin of the money. In conclusion, the methodology for detecting money laundering is complex and very important in the fight against organized crime and financial corruption. Using the analysis of financial transactions, financial reports and documents, as well as the investigation of ownership and assets, criminals try to identify and prosecute money launderers and organizations. Using modern technology and international cooperation, the effectiveness of the methodology can be improved and more serious obstacles can be created for criminals trying to use it to hide illegal capital.
