Sustainable creative careers through mentoring: Understanding social resilience in the art field

In recent years, there has been a rise in career development programs for artists, including various types of mentoring programs. However, research on mentoring is scarce within the field of cultural policy. In this paper, we analyse mentoring as a tool for developing creative careers by investigating three different programs implemented in the Norwegian art field. The analysis is based on qualitative interviews with mentors, protégés, and administrators in the three programs, and survey data, applications, and reports from one of the programs. Building on studies that address the social and collective aspects of artists’ and other creatives’ work and using social capital and social resilience as theoretical lenses for our analysis, we argue that despite potential downsides and pitfalls, mentoring can offer a holistic approach to learning, and its activation of collective resources can contribute to resilience and sustainability in creative careers.

The life and legacy of Yakov Lvovich Rapoport: the great pathologist and his contribution to medicine

Yakov Lvovich Rapoport is an outstanding Soviet pathologist, professor, who made a significant contribution to the development of medical science, and also left an indelible mark in the literature with his memoirs about the Doctors' Trial of 1953. This article discusses his contribution to the development of pathology, as well as examples of his scientific achievements. The authors of the article analyze the works by Ya. L. Rapoport, devoted to the study of immunopathological processes in the human body, pathomorphosis, as well as cardiomyopathies. The article describes the contribution of Ya. L. Rapoport to the development of new methods for diagnosing various diseases, as well as to the creation of new approaches to the study of pathological processes. The experience of scientific research and teaching at various medical institutes of Ya. L. Rapoport makes his research multifaceted. Separately, the article describes the turning points in the life of Ya. L. Rapoport. The early years of Ya. L. Rapoport’s life are interesting because of the choice between a creative career and medicine. In addition, participation in the Great Patriotic War left a big imprint on the scientist’s personal life and career. Also, a great tragedy - appearing in the Doctors' Trial of 1953 - changed the personality of Ya. L. Rapoport himself, as well as the relationships within his family, according to the descriptions in his memoirs. The scientific career and research interests of Ya. L. Rapoport from that moment also proceeded differently. The daughters of Yakov Lvovich Rapoport, Noemi Yakovlevna and Natalya Yakovlevna, in their articles, notes and books, cited vivid memories of various moments in their father’s life, which was also reflected in the text of the article.

The paper studies the performing activity of the “Marshal of Choral Art”, Artistic Director of the State National Academic Choir of Armenia (since 1961), National Hero of Armenia (2017), People’s Artist of the USSR (1978), the USSR State Prize Recipient (1975), Conductor, Professor Ohannes Tchekidjian. Having covered the Rostov page of the prominent conductor’s concerts, the author sums up the Maestro’s creative career, concluding that, thanks to O. Tchekidjian, the quality of musical life in Armenia has raised to a higher level.
 Maestro Tchekidjian and the Armenian Capella visited Rostov-on-Don two times – in 1972 and 1983. The goal of the research is to present for the first time the 1983 Rostov tours of Maestro Ohannes Tchekidjian and the Armenian Capella, which were a great success. Under Ohannes Tchekidjian’s direction, the Rostov State Symphony Orchestra and the State Academic Choir of Armenia premiered the Requiem by Gabriel Faure, whose concert biography in the Soviet Union began thanks to Ohannes Tchekidjian.
 Introducing the Rostov page of the outstanding conductor’s concert activities, the author gives a generalized description of his work, concluding that thanks to Ohannes Tchekidjian, the academic choral art of Armenia has risen to a qualitatively new level. It has had a huge sociocultural impact not only on the musical life of Rostov-on-Don, but also on the entire multinational Soviet Union. Moreover, with his talent and multifaceted activities, the Maestro was able to make a significant contribution to the development of world choral music and conducting art in general.

A proposed framework for reviewing and revising musical theatre curricula

Careers in musical theatre necessarily require not only a set of discipline-specific skills but also a range of supplementary, supporting skills. Curricula also must adapt to current industry needs and conventions. To address the breadth of requisite skills and maintain currency, a process of regular curriculum review is implemented by universities and conservatoires offering musical theatre degree programmes. In this article, I offer a framework based on concepts from creative career theory and field research as a possible approach to curriculum renewal and development in musical theatre degree programmes.

The Cast in the context of Martin Scorsese's directorial style

Full-length and short independent feature films directed by Martin Scorsese are considered as the research material. The object of the study is the main elements of Martin Scorsese's directorial style. Throughout his creative career, the director under study, without fear, operates with numerous artistic techniques that today form the directorial style – broadcasting Christian motifs, cruelty combined with the beauty of the criminal world, eyes as an element of the hero's soul, using a mirror in the context of reflecting the other world of the character, narration through dreams and fantasies, as well as an abundance of editing solutions. The main attention is paid to the cast in the director's filmography, which correlates with the subject of this study. In this article, the author analyzed 33 films of the director that fall under the conditions of the study. The theoretical and methodological basis of the research was the works of domestic and foreign theorists and practitioners of cinematography, as well as film encyclopedias and film textbooks of the academic level. According to the results of the study, the author came to the conclusion that the director is committed to a permanent cast in his films. More than others, Martin Scorsese stars such actors as Robert De Niro, Catherine Scorsese, Charles Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio. The director puts himself at the top of this list. 430 actors took part in all the films studied, who appear in the director's filmography at least twice. In the films The Irishman (2019), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), Goodfellas (1990), and Casino (1995) starred the largest number of recurring actors in the director's work. Also, in the course of our research, we found that the director in most of his films prefers to shoot not only himself, but also members of his family.

Courtois Motifs as a Means of Representing Pedagogical Issues in F.M. Dostoevsky's Short Story «The Little Hero»

Pedagogical problems are the backbone for the work of F.M. Dostoevsky, various aspects of this topic can be traced throughout the writer's creative career, however, one of the most remarkable works from the point of view of the way pedagogical ideas are represented is the story "Little Hero". Here Dostoevsky uses a complex of canonical motifs of courtois literature. These traditions are already foregrounded by the semantics of the title and, further, they can be traced in the plot structure based on the initiation rite, as well as in the character system of the story (the protagonist not only positions himself as a knight, but in fact is the possessor of typical knightly attributes, and the features of a Beautiful lady are projected onto one of the female characters). However, the representation of courtois motives in the story of F.M. Dostoevsky's is specific, and the specificity lies in the writer's use of irony, which is why the traditional plot of the knight's novel and the entire motivic complex characteristic of courtois literature are realized in a comic, somewhat degraded form.

2023 Sylvia Docker lecture: Ignite your passion, and connect, to make a difference.

Together, we grow our profession of occupational therapy as we engage in understanding and addressing the issues that challenge the people we work with. In this Sylvia Docker Lecture, I will share the collective journeys of myself and other occupational therapists and health professionals who have undertaken (or are currently undertaking) their PhDs and are actively involved in research, to address these challenges. Together, we will explore three themes: understanding the WHY that ignites one's passion; living the journey-the EXPERIENCE; and making a difference-the IMPACT. Stories will be told through the lived experience of those engaged in research as currently enrolled PhD students, emerging researchers, and experienced researchers. These stories will capture the lived experience across individuals, and at different times in the research journey. Stories are summarised and captured using natural language processing. Topics are identified, concept maps visualised, and outputs interpreted in context of related theoretical models. Key topics identified include: the clinical and personal motivators that have ignited the passion in individuals; the value of connecting with others and growing networks; and how one's research has made a difference. The impact of discoveries and outcomes are highlighted, together with the importance of people and networks. Analysis of connections and synthesis over time revealed frequent and strong connections across themes, concepts and topics; with synthesising concepts of passion, networks, knowledge translation, opportunities, supervision and communication emerging and being shaped over time. These collective journeys provide inspiration and pathways to creative careers that have future potential in the growth of the profession of occupational therapy. It is recommended that each occupational therapist take the time to reflect on the 'why' that ignites your passion, your journey and how you can make a difference!

The Aesthetic Value of Caravaggio’s Light and Shadow Technique from a Geometric Perspective

Abstract Caravaggio was an influential Italian painter of the 17th century who made important contributions to the development of later European art, both in terms of light and shadow techniques and in terms of ideas. This study first explores the characteristics of Caravaggio’s paintings and briefly explains Caravaggio’s painting style, light and shadow processing techniques, and their significant influence. Secondly, based on the visual perception art understanding method and aesthetic law, the curvelet geometric transformation is utilized to interpret the characteristics of different styles of Caravaggio’s light and shadow techniques in terms of three geometric features: multi-scale amplitude, coefficient distribution curve, and image non-smoothness. Finally, the aesthetic value of Caravaggio’s light and shadow techniques is interpreted from the geometric point of view by using six works from different periods: Caravaggio’s The Doubt of St. Thomas, The Supper at Emmaus, The Basket of Fruits, The Diviner, Narcasus and Judith Cutting down Hierophant as the research materials. The results show that Caravaggio’s light and shadow technique in the early stage of his creative career is characterized by a high low-scale coefficient and a low high-scaled coefficient, which indicates that there are more thick lines and fewer details. The maximum smoothness value of the works is 0.4035 respectively. The light and shadow technique in the later stage of his creative career is characterized by a low scale coefficient and a high scale coefficient, which means that he uses more fine lines to depict the details and less thick lines, reflecting the fact that the light and shadow technique in the later stage of his creative career is characterized by a low scale coefficient and a high high scale coefficient. ПАРАДОКС АЛЕКСАНДРА АЛЕКСЕЕВА: ИЗ КАДЕТОВ – В ХУДОЖНИКИ (1919-1930)

The authors of the article examine the way Alexander Alexeev (1901, Kazan – 1982, Paris), the outstanding world and Russian classical literature illustrator and pinscreen creator began his creative career. It is mentioned in the article that Alexander Alexeev had to leave the Russian Empire, forming part of the first wave of the Russian emigration settling down in Paris in the long run. In the beginning of his creative career he worked there as a theatre artist. Henceforward, Alexander Alexeev committed himself to the art of the book illustration. The authors claim in the first fifteen years of his creative activities Alexander Alexeev to have become the most eminent of the Russian emigrants book artist with twenty seven books, including book author frontispiece portrait and some book jackets illustrated. Having examined creative activities in the first fifteen years of his Paris life the authors claim Alexander Alexeev, as many other creative intellectuals of the first wave of the Russian emigration to have retained in his soul and heart the image of his Motherland, visualizing it in his works this way or another. These reminiscences and Motherland perception do demonstrate our contemporaries Alexander Alexeev though being away from Russia for nearly 60 years, in fact to have always been Russian patriot retaining the Russian world particle in his heart, as well as love for his mother, with her images scattered in his works all over his creative activities.

ЛІДІЯ КОРДЮМ-ОСТРОВСЬКА: МАТЕРІАЛИ ДЛЯ ТВОРЧОЇ БІОГРАФІЇ

The article is devoted to the creative biography of the Ukrainian actress, film director Lidia Mykolaivna Ostrovska. She began her creative career at the end of the 1920s, when she got the main role in the film «Dzhalma» directed by Arnold Kordium. The next films directed by Arnold Kordium, in which Lidia Ostrovska starred in the main roles, were «Wind from the thresholds», «Mirabo» and «The last port». They added popularity to the actress. In addition to films directed by A. Kordium, L. Ostrovska starred in films directed by Kostiantyn Bolotov and Pavlo Dolyna. From 1944 to 1981, Lidia Ostrovska worked as a director at the Kyiv Film Studio of Popular Science Films. Here she started shooting her first own films. Over the years, Lidia Ostrovska has shot more than 50 documentaries, was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, received numerous awards, including international ones, at film festivals. She wrote film scripts, filmed documentaries about art and Ukrainian culture. In 1954, her film «Taras Shevchenko – Artist» was released. This tape marked the beginning of the trilogy about Kobzar. Over time, she created two more films: «Thoughts of Kobzar» (1961) and the full-length film «Tales about Shevchenko» (1963). At the Kyiv Film Studio of Popular Science Films, Lidia Ostrovska created a series of tapes called «Life of Prominent People on the Screen». Ostrovska was a recognized director in the world of scientific cinema. In the 1970s, her films were devoted to the eternal mystery of life – the topic of biology. If earlier she made films about the picturesqueness of her native land, now the content of her films were biological problems, science, observations and scientific paradoxes. Lidia Ostrovska’s films were successfully shown throughout the Soviet Union and abroad, participated in many international festivals, where they received honorary awards. Lidia Mykolaivna Ostrovska took a worthy place among the artists of popular science cinema. Her dedication to her favorite work, imaginative vision, ability to masterfully embody her ideas on the screen, unceasing work until the last days won the recognition of the audience and critics.

Talent and the social physics of inequalities

Talent and creativity are widely regarded as the ultimate factors and drivers of economic success in societies experiencing rising income inequalities, job polarization, and global mobility of high-skilled workers. Yet, due to obstacles surrounding their definition, the content and causal effectiveness of these two factors remain obscure, or are even dismissed as purely social constructs. Drawing mainly on studies of artistic and scientific work, this article proposes avenues for solving this enigma, by connecting four research strands: the imbalances present in creative career trajectories arising from relative, performance-based valuation; the multidimensionality of skills and the multi­stage training process; the variability of non-routine work; and the stratification effect of assortative matching in teamwork and collaboration. The final section examines how the workforce “talentification” impacts compensation practices, with pay scales getting legitimized according to large, supposedly Paretian-like individual performance differentials.

BUDDHIST MOTIVES IN THE CREATIVITY OF TSYRENDORZHO BALZHANOV (PROBLEMS OF DIRECTING AND TRAINING ACTORS IN THE BURYAT THEATRE IN THE 1990s and 2000s)

The article examines the creativity of the Buryat director Tsyrendorzho Balzhanov, formed in connection with theatrical phenomena and events that determined the future of the Buryat drama theater at the turn of cultural epochs. Having chosen the Buddhist theme as the main motive of his work, Tsyrendorzho Balzhanov faced a number of issues that raised the problem of staging solutions and the problem of training an actor while creating Buddhist images and characters, as well as the possibility of achieving a special state of «satori» in terms of theatrical action. The lack of experience in the religious productions in the Buryat drama theater, the theatrical and directorial legacy that remained from the theater of the Soviet years did not allow the Buryat director to consolidate the state of «satori», which he managed to achieve in the play «Damdin Lama». Based on this experience, which is more intuitive in nature, Tsyrendorzho Balzhanov de-voted the main part of his creative career to the search for directorial ap-proaches and tools, the development of acting training. The result of the search for the solutions that the Buryat director faced after the play «Damdin Lama» in 1990 was his scientific research «The Mys-tery of Tsam as a Buddhist philosophical text and ritual action» and the crea-tion of the acting training based on the methods of Oriental theater and Bud-dhist religious practices. The author concludes that the modern theater, which has experience of performative theater and postmodern philosophy, has the potential to create such productions, however, only in the director’s interpretation, without partic-ipation of the «actor-personality», who, according to Tsyrendorzho Balzhanov, remains the center of the director’s idea in the play imbued with the Buddhist motifs.

Western Characters in Eileen Chang's 1940s Novels

The 1940s was the early stage of Eileen Changs creative career. During this period, she created many Western characters in her novels, especially seven works, namely Shame, Amah!, Cycle of Traps, When I was Young, Aloeswood Incense: The First Brazier, Aloeswood Incense: The Second Brazier,, Red Rose, White Rose, and The Creation of a Century. Adopting the theory of comparative literary figurativism and post-colonialism, this paper is based on these seven fictional texts involving Western characters and analyses them in terms of writing tendency, generative mechanism and double entailment. The study reveals that the Western characters in Eileen Changs novels show the characteristics of de-familiarisation and decolonisation in terms of writing tendency and are generated under the influence of Eileen Changs personal experience and collective imagination, of which the personal experience includes the living environment and reading experience. These exotic images have the double connotation of speaking of self and other, which can reflect the homogeneity of self and other and the dissimilarity with some post-colonial characteristics.

The tendencies in 20th century architecture were determined by the relationship between the classical tradition of architecture and modernity. In the 1930s, modern architecture came to the fore more and more, but at the same time, both in international architecture and in Hungary, alternative efforts appeared that sought a dialogue between modern architecture, historical traditions and local specificities. This search for an alternative was present in modern architecture throughout the 20th century and is still effective today. The trends with different colors are characterized by the modern concept of the other in the written history of architectural theory. The purpose of this study is to present the interactions between the international and domestic tendencies of the “other modern” through the work of Iván Kotsis. Iván Kotsis was a significant figure in architecture between the two world wars, and in addition to his creative career, he was also a decisive character in the architectural education of the University of Applied Sciences. His views became guidelines for later generations. His work is illustrative to the transition between historicizing and modern architecture, while experimentation with local, regional character was also a decisive inspiration for him in this transition. He established close international relations with the dominant European architects of the era, including the Stuttgart School, classified as an alternative school, and the German architects Paul Schmitthenner and Paul Bonatz. In order to bring a contribution to the field of the history of architectural ideas, the study examines his creative concepts and the relationship between classical and modern architecture on the basis of his autobiography, archival publications and contemporary literature.

John Fowles’s diaries as a creative biography of the writer

J. Fowles’s diaries illustrate the emergence of the creative career of the prominent 20th-century English writer. In Russian science, there is an opinion that Fowles’s oeuvre belongs to postmodernism. However, Fowles persistently separated himself from postmodernism. A thorough study of his diaries testifies that with all the variety of themes and images and the abundance of the techniques of artistic representation of reality, the key issue of his works was the theme of the individual gaining self-awareness as a necessary condition for achieving freedom. His diaries can be considered as a compact documentary and fictional work, as a presentation of the principles of literary development and its continuity. Fowles’s diary is a peculiar confession of a young man, his creative pursuits and doubts of self–determination in society and life. In his aesthetic principles Fowles focuses on the classical tradition of literature in the 18th–19th centuries. Continuing the tradition of Rousseau, Fowles creates a model of a man who is characterized by the cult of emotions and nature. For Fowles, the world of art is the world of spirituality. Fowles’s diaries allow us to consider the attitude of the autobiographical protagonist to important phenomena of public life. In his diaries, special attention is paid to the topics of time, memory and nature. The diary of John Fowles describes the process of the person’s psychological formation with a real chronotope, with an analytical, informative and aesthetically rich word.

Formation of the Street Art Discourse by private institutions: on the example of the Inloco Foundation

The subject of this study is the process of entering the art world of a new object – the art of the street wave. Based on the method of discursive analysis proposed by M. Foucault, an attempt is made to determine through which discursive utterances the subjects of the art world form the discourse of street wave art, as well as how the field of utterances is organized. The subject whose activity is being investigated is the St. Petersburg Inloco Foundation, which focuses in its work on artists whose creative career has a street background. The article describes the characteristics of what can be conceptualized as a statement in the activities of the Foundation, and also describes how the field of these statements is organized. In the course of the study, the forms of sequences, forms of coexistence and intervention procedures were considered. It was revealed that the experience of street creativity of representatives of the art of the street wave is being modified under the influence of discursive practices of the field of contemporary art. It is noted that the art of the street wave exists at the junction of two fields – the field of graffiti and the field of institutionalized art. It is concluded that the borderline position of street wave art allows it to expand the field of contemporary art due to the fact that it was once in the field of "non-art", was extracted by the subjects of the art world from the sphere of everyday life and endowed with the status of a candidate for evaluation.

O Metamorfozach Owidiusza z Haarlemu

The article considers a series of relief prints by Hendrik Goltzius. The artist intended for these prints to become an ‘illustrated companion’ to Ovid’s Metamorphoses, or, alternatively, a sort of mirror image that reflects the poetic world of Metamorphoses in another creative medium. The first part of this analysis surveys Goltzius’ creative career and examines which life events might have encouraged the artist to start working on his adaptation of Metamorphoses. In the second part of the article, we discuss the creation of Goltzius’ drawings and copperplate engravings, explaining why the work of this Haarlem artist represents a historic breakthrough in the illustrative tradition of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Finally, the third part of the article assesses whether Goltzius’ Metamorphoses prints adhere to established conventions of the emblematic art (ars emblematica).

On the Issue of the Concept of Taqlid in the Iqbal’s Poetry: Selfless Following or Shameless Imitation?

Muhammad Iqbal (1877–1938) was a notable figure in the Muslim Reformation movement in India of his time. He wrote poetry in Urdu and Persian and philosophical prose in English. The article is devoted to a rare case in the poetic practice of Iqbal when the theological concept of taqlid — “imitation”, “following the tradition”, radically changes its connotation in a poetic text. In Islam, there is a trend opposite to taqlid –ijtihad, the solution of emerging legal problems that had no precedent. The term ijtihad is always mentioned by Iqbal in the same sense, while for taqlid the situation is different. At the beginning of his creative career (1901–1905), the poet believed that “Suicide is better than the path of imitation (taqlid)”; however, in the poems in Persian “The Secrets of the Self” (Asrār-i Xudī, 1915), and then “The Mysteries of Selflessness” (Rumūz-i Bīxudī, 1918) taqlid acquires a positive connotation. Iqbal’s position is reflected in his comments on Nicholson’s English translation: “The idea is that taqlid is also a form of love”. The second poem deals with the formation of the Muslim nation. Chapter 16 of the poem Rumūz-i Bīxudī is titled: “In explaining that in the period of the decline of the nation, taqlid is better than ijtihad.” Nevertheless, examples of the positive use of the motive taqlid make up a smaller part of the statistics. Iqbal-Westerner and modernist comes to the conclusion that the penetration of the Western ideas, as well as the influence of the West on all spheres of life in India of his time, is fraught with terrible danger. At the same time, the poet’s attention is drawn to ijtihad, which contributes to progressive changes in the life of some Muslim countries. A. Schimmel, in her main work “Gabriel’s Wing” (first published in 1963), does not mention the positive connotation of Iqbal’s taqlid. Meanwhile, as one can see, the concept of taqlid, while retaining its meaning of “imitation, following”, changes its connotation depending on the poetic discourse.
