Rotational excitations in rare-earth nuclei: A comparative study within three cranking models with different mean fields and treatments of pairing correlations

High-spin rotational bands in rare-earth Er ($Z=68$), Tm ($Z=69$) and Yb ($Z=70$) isotopes are investigated by three different nuclear models. These are (i) the cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) approach with approximate particle number projection by means of the Lipkin-Nogami (LN) method, (ii) the cranking covariant density functional theory (CDFT) with pairing correlations treated by a shell-model-like approach (SLAP) or the so called particle-number conserving (PNC) method, and (iii) cranked shell model (CSM) based on the Nilsson potential with pairing correlations treated by the PNC method. A detailed comparison between these three models in the description of the ground state rotational bands of even-even Er and Yb isotopes is performed. The similarities and differences between these models in the description of the moments of inertia, the features of band crossings, equilibrium deformations and pairing energies of even-even nuclei under study are discussed. These quantities are considered as a function of rotational frequency and proton and neutron numbers. The changes in the properties of the first band crossings with increasing neutron number in this mass region are investigated. On average, a comparable accuracy of the description of available experimental data is achieved in these models. However, the differences between model predictions become larger above the first band crossings. Because of time-consuming nature of numerical calculations in the CDFT-based models, a systematic study of the rotational properties of both ground state and excited state bands in odd-mass Tm nuclei is carried out only by the PNC-SCM. With few exceptions, the rotational properties of experimental 1-quasiparticle and 3-quasiparticle bands in $^{165,167,169,171}$Tm are reproduced reasonably well.

Spectroscopy of the neutron-rich actinide nucleusU240following multinucleon-transfer reactions

Background: Nuclear structure information for the neutron-rich actinide nuclei is important since it is the benchmark for theoretical models that provide predictions for the heaviest nuclei. Purpose: gamma-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich heavy nuclei in the actinide region. Method: Multinucleon-transfer reactions in Zn-70 + U-238 and Xe-136 + U-238 have been measured in two experiments performed at the INFN Legnaro, Italy. In the Zn-70 experiment the high-resolution HPGe Clover Array (CLARA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA was employed. In the Xe-136 experiment the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was used in combination with PRISMA and the Detector Array for Multinucleon Transfer Ejectiles (DANTE). Results: The ground-state band (g.s. band) of U-240 was measured up to the 20(+) level and a tentative assignment was made up to the (24(+)) level. Results from gamma gamma coincidence and from particle coincidence analyses are shown. Moments of inertia (MoI) show a clear upbend. Evidence for an extended first negative-parity band of U-240 is found. Conclusions: A detailed comparison with latest calculations shows best agreement with cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) calculations for the g.s. band properties. The negative-parity band shows the characteristics of a K-pi = 0 band based on an octupole vibration.

High-Kmulti-quasiparticle states and rotational bands in103255Lr

Two isomeric states have been identified in $^{255}\mathrm{Lr}$. The decay of the isomers populates rotational structures. Comparison with macroscopic-microscopic calculations suggests that the lowest observed sequence is built upon the $[624]9/{2}^{+}$ Nilsson state. However, microscopic cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) calculations do not reproduce the moment of inertia within typical accuracy. This is a clear challenge to theories describing the heaviest elements.

Identification of theg92proton and neutron band crossing in theN=ZnucleusSr76

High-spin states in $^{76}\mathrm{Sr}$ have been studied using Gammasphere plus Microball detector arrays. The known yrast band has been extended beyond the first band crossing, which involves the simultaneous alignment of pairs of ${\mathrm{g}}_{\frac{9}{2}}$ protons and neutrons, to a tentative spin of $24\ensuremath{\hbar}$. The data are compared with the results of cranked relativistic mean-field (CRMF) and cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) calculations. The properties of the band, including the ${\mathrm{g}}_{\frac{9}{2}}$ proton/neutron band crossing frequency and moments of inertia, are found to be well reproduced by the CRHB calculations. Furthermore, the unpaired CRMF calculations show quite good agreement with the data beyond the band crossing region, indicating that pairing is weak at these frequencies. The high spin results suggest that there is little evidence for an isoscalar $(t=0)$ $\mathit{np}$ pair field. Moreover, a systematic study of the band crossings in even-even $N=Z$ nuclei for the first time reveals that there is no evidence to support the existence of the Coulomb antipairing effect caused by the Coulomb exchange term.

High-spin structure of $N\simeq Z$ nuclei around the A = 72 region

High-spin states have been studied in Kr-72 and Br-72 using the Ca-40 + Ca-40 and Ar-36 + Ca-40 reactions at 164 and 145 MeV, respectively. The properties and configurations of the high-spin bands observed have been interpreted using impaired cranked Nilssou-Strutinsky (CNS), and for Kr-72, paired cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) calculations. In Kr-72 a new band has been identified that has the properties expected for the doubly aligned S-band configuration. In Br-72 the previously known bands have been extended to higher spin. This has lead to a re-interpretation of the configurations.

Moments of inertia of nuclei in the rare earth region: A relativistic versus nonrelativistic investigation

A parameter-free investigation of the moments of inertia of ground-state rotational bands in well-deformed rare-earth nuclei is carried out using cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) and nonrelativistic cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (CHFB) theories. In CRHB theory, the relativistic fields are determined by the nonlinear Lagrangian with the NL1 force and the pairing interaction by the central part of a finite-range Gogny D1S force. In CHFB theory, the properties in particle-hole and particle-particle channels are defined solely by Gogny D1S forces. Using an approximate particle number projection before variation by means of the Lipkin-Nogami method improves the agreement with the experimental data, especially in CRHB theory. The effect of the particle number projection on the moments of inertia and pairing energies is larger in relativistic than in nonrelativistic theory.

Superdeformations in relativistic and non-relativistic mean field theories

The applications of the extensions of relativistic mean field (RMF) theory to the rotating frame, such as cranked relativistic mean field (CRMF) theory and cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) theory, for the description of superdeformed bands in the A ∼ 60, 140 – 150 and 190 mass regions are overviewed and compared briefly with the results obtained in non-relativistic mean field theories.

Cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory: Superdeformed bands in theA∼190region

Cranked Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) theory is presented as an extension of Relativistic Mean Field theory with pairing correlations to the rotating frame. Pairing correlations are taken into account by a finite range two-body force of Gogny type and approximate particle number projection is performed by Lipkin-Nogami method. This theory is applied to the description of yrast superdeformed rotational bands observed in even-even nuclei of the $A\sim 190$ mass region. Using the well established parameter sets NL1 for the Lagrangian and D1S for the pairing force one obtains a very successful description of data such as kinematic ($J^{(1)}$) and dynamic ($J^{(2)}$) moments of inertia without any adjustment of new parameters. Within the present experimental accuracy the calculated transition quadrupole moments $Q_t$ agree reasonably well with the observed data.
