Does cranial cruciate ligament repair by tibial plateau leveling osteotomy surgery restore dog’s natural kinematics? – A case series

Tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) serves as an effective method of functional stabilization for treating cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) deficiency. It is not clear if TPLO could restore the natural kinematics of the stifle, hip, and tarsal joints of the affected limb during walking. The hind limb motion between TPLO cases and control groups in eight adult dogs (4 French Bulldogs and 4 Pit Bull Terrier) was recorded by a motion capture system. Three-dimensional (3D) angular motions of the hip, stifle, and tarsal joints—including flexion-extension, abduction-adduction, and rotations—were computed and compared. Significant differences in joint kinematics were observed between TPLO cases and controls. In Case 1, the TPLO case in the French Bulldog showed differences in hip, stifle, and tarsal flexion-extension, abduction-adduction, and internal-external rotation. Asymmetries between affected and unaffected limbs were also detected in hip and stifle motions (up to 43° in some cases). Similar patterns of differences were found in Pit Bull Terriers Case 2 and Case 3, with significant variations in hip, stifle, and tarsal movements. Case 3 did not show hip asymmetries, but notable stifle and tarsal asymmetries were observed. The general daily activity performance for French Bulldogs and Pit Bull Terriers that underwent TPLO procedures was positive. Our findings suggested that natural hind limb kinematics during gait was not restored in TPLO hind limb cases in both breeds.

Ex vivo biomechanical evaluation and comparison of lateral femoro-fabella ligament suture and lateral suture with bone anchor for cranial cruciate ligament repair in cats.

To compare the biomechanical properties of lateral femoro-fabella ligament suture (FFLS) and lateral suture with a bone anchor suture (BAS) for management of feline cranial cruciate ligament disease. 12 femurs from 6 mature cat cadavers. The samples were collected from April to June 2023. The specimens had an FFLS and, subsequently, BAS placed and were positioned into a biomechanical testing machine, preloaded from 5 N to 15 N for 100 cycles, and subsequently, a load to suture failure was applied. The displacement at 5 N and 15 N, the total precycle displacement (millimeters), the force at 3 mm displacement and at failure (newtons), the displacement at failure (millimeters), and the stiffness to failure (Newton:millimiter) were recorded. Nonparametric Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to compare data between the 2 groups. The displacement at 5 N and 15 N and the total precycle displacement were significantly higher in the FFLS group compared to the BAS group. Additionally, the FFLS group results showed less consistent displacement and marked variability. The force (newtons) at 3 mm displacement was higher in the BAS group. There was no significant difference in force and no significant difference in displacement at failure between the 2 groups. However, the stiffness to failure (N/mm) was significantly higher in the BAS group. BAS represented a more stable and reliable femur attachment for extracapsular suture in cats. To demonstrate the stability and reliability between BAS and FFLS and influence implant selection in the treatment of cranial cruciate ligament rupture in cats with evaluation of biomechanical properties.

Degradation and Mechanical Behavior of Fish Gelatin/Polycaprolactone AC Electrospun Nanofibrous Meshes

AbstractWith the increasing interest in biopolymer nanofibers for diverse applications, the characterization of these materials in the physiological environment has become of equal interest and importance. This study performs first‐time simulated body fluid (SBF) degradation and tensile mechanical analyses of blended fish gelatin (FGEL) and polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibrous meshes prepared by a high‐throughput free‐surface alternating field electrospinning. The thermally crosslinked FGEL/PCL nanofibrous materials with 84–96% porosity and up to 60 wt% PCL fraction demonstrate mass retention up to 88.4% after 14 days in SBF. The trends in the PCL crystallinity and FGEL secondary structure modification during the SBF degradation are analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Tensile tests of such porous, 0.1–2.2 mm thick FGEL/PCL nanofibrous meshes in SBF reveal the ultimate tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation at break within the ranges of 60–105 kPa, 0.3–1.6 MPa, and 20–70%, respectively, depending on the FGEL/PCL mass ratio. The results demonstrate that FGEL/PCL nanofibrous materials prepared from poorly miscible FGEL and PCL can be suitable for selected biomedical applications such as scaffolds for skin, cranial cruciate ligament, articular cartilage, or vascular tissue repair.

Comparison of Extracapsular Stabilization Techniques Using an Ultrasonically Implanted Absorbable Bone Anchor (Weldix) after Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture in Cats-An In Vitro Study.

Simple SummaryOne reason for lameness in cats is the rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament. This ligament is located in the stifle joint and contributes to its stabilization during excessive forward movement and internal rotation of the tibia. One method for the surgical treatment of cranial ligament rupture is the placement of an extracapsular suture. Different materials and methods of suture fixation have been used in dogs and cats. This study investigated the use of a novel polylactide absorbable bone anchor that was implanted with ultrasound technology for suture fixation and compared this with suture fixation alone and fixation with a nonabsorbable bone anchor using an ex vivo modified limb-press model. For evaluation, distance measurements on radiographs were performed and the angles between defined bony structures were calculated. The acquired measurements accounted for both craniocaudal and mediolateral movements, and the results showed that the absorbable anchor could neutralize excessive movement within the stifle joint in two of three measurements and seems to be a good alternative to well-known surgical methods.Background: This study evaluated joint stability after surgical repair of cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL)-deficient stifle joints in cats using a novel absorbable polylactide bone anchor in an ex vivo model. Methods: Thirty-six hindlimbs from cats with intact (Gi group) and transected CrCLs were treated with fabellotibial suture alone (GFW group), suture combined with an absorbable polylactide bone anchor (GWD group), or suture combined with a nonabsorbable bone anchor (GFT group), positioned in a limb press with predefined joint angles (stifle joint: 120 ± 5°; hock joint: 120 ± 5°) and loaded with 10%, 20%, and 30% of body mass (BM). Predefined points were measured on lateral radiographs and with a coordinate measurement machine. Distances on radiographs (mm) were measured and angles (°) were calculated to represent the craniocaudal movement and the internal rotation of the tibia. Results: There were no differences for craniocaudal movement between Gi and GFW or GFT, but for GWD regarding angle measurement at 30% BM. For internal rotation, there was no significant difference between Gi and GFW or GWD, but for GFT. Conclusion: The used absorbable polylactide bone-anchor was able to stabilize the stifle joint regarding internal rotation and craniocaudal movement as calculated from distance measurements.

Comparison of tension band wiring and other tibial tuberosity advancement techniques for cranial cruciate ligament repair: an experimental study

BackgroundCranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is one of the most common causes of limb lameness in dogs. Surgical techniques based on tibial osteotomies such as tibial plateau leveling osteotomy and tibial tuberosity advancement are used to eliminate dynamic thrust. Tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) uses an osteotomy fixated by cage, plates, forks and screws to change the relationship of the patellar tendon and tibial plateau angle. Tension band wiring technique is one of the most common surgical methods used to treat a tension fracture and remains the gold standard for the treatment of tibial tuberosity fractures. In this study, we compared experimentally the biomechanical effect of application of tension band wiring compared to other techniques for the fixation of the TTA osteotomy. The techniques compared to are standard commercially available systems for TTA fixation.ResultsTension band wiring (TBW) presented the higher resistance to failure compared to all the other surgical procedures, with the highest values found in the TBW group with 1.47 ± 0.07 N and the lowest in the TTA cage (0.82 ± 0.08) and TTA-2 (0.85 ± 0.06) groups with statistically significant differences in all cases (P < 0.001). TTA rapid and TTA plate groups exhibited a similar strength, and same happened between TTA-2 and TTA cage groups. All the other comparisons by pair were significantly different with P < 0.001.ConclusionsResults suggest that fixating the osteotomy with tension band wiring increases the strength of the fixation and decrease the risk of implant failure. Further clinical studies are needed to demonstrate in vivo reliability and to test different variables such as size and weight of dogs. These results could have important clinical implications in the treatment of CCL ruptures.

ESTUDO DA TÉCNICA INTRACAPSULAR ASSISTIDA POR ARTROSCOPIA PARA O TRATAMENTO DA RUPTURA DO LIGAMENTO CRUZADO CRANIAL EM CADÁVERES DE CÃES

Resumo O objetivo foi estudar e aprimorar a técnica intracapsular de reparação do ligamento cruzado cranial assistida por artroscopia em cadáveres de cães com a confecção dos túneis tibial e femoral e utilização de autoenxerto osso-tendão patelar-osso. Foram utilizados 10 membros pélvicos de cães &gt; 20kg. Os túneis ósseos foram confeccionados de forma independente e na posição anatômica original dos locais de inserção do ligamento cruzado cranial. Foram realizados estudo radiográfico e tomográfico para avaliar a articulação. A coleta das porções ósseas do enxerto foi feita com osteótomo e martelo. Ocorreram fratura em três patelas e em três tuberosidades tibiais. Os enxertos apresentaram comprimento médio 7,56cm. Os túneis tibiais e os túneis femorais foram confeccionados no local de inserção do ligamento cruzado cranial em 80% e 90% das articulações, respectivamente. Os túneis tibiais apresentaram ângulo médio de 62,95º mensurado por tomografia computadorizada. Os túneis femorais foram confeccionados em posição 13hs para o joelho esquerdo (100%) e 11hs para o direito (100%). Ao final do procedimento, obteve-se gaveta negativo em 100% das articulações. Pode-se concluir que a técnica proposta é viável de ser realizada no cão, porém faz-se necessário instrumental específico devido ao pequeno tamanho da articulação canina para obter melhor acurácia.

Mechanical strength of four allograft fixation techniques for ruptured cranial cruciate ligament repair in dogs.

To test ex vivo mechanical properties of 4 allograft fixation techniques for cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) replacement. 30 stifle joints from canine cadavers. CCL-deficient stifle joints repaired by 1 of 4 techniques (n = 6/group) and CCL-intact stifle joints (control group; 6) were mechanically tested. Three repair techniques involved a patella-patella ligament segment (PPL) allograft: a tibial and femoral interference screw (PPL-2S), a femoral interference screw and the patella seated in a tapering bone tunnel in the tibia (PPL-1S), or addition of a suture and a bone anchor to the PPL-1S (PPL-SL). The fourth technique involved a deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) allograft secured with transverse femoral fixation and stabilized with a tibial interference screw and 2 spiked washers on the tibia (DDFT-TF). The tibia was axially loaded at a joint angle of 135°. Loads to induce 3, 5, and 10 mm of femoral-tibia translation; stiffness; and load at ultimate failure with the corresponding displacement were calculated. Group means were compared with a multivariate ANOVA. Mean ± SD load for the intact (control) CCL was 520.0 ± 51.3 N and did not differ significantly from the load needed to induce 3 mm of femoral-tibial translation for fixation techniques PPL-SL (422.4 ± 46.3 N) and DDFT-TF (654.2 ± 117.7 N). Results for the DDFT-TF were similar to those of the intact CCL for all outcome measures. The DDFT-TF yielded mechanical properties similar to those of intact CCLs and may be a viable technique to test in vivo.

Radiographic location of the femoral footprint of the cranial cruciate ligament in dogs.

To describe the radiographic location of the center of the femoral footprint of the cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) in dogs. Using femora from 49 adult, orthopedically sound dogs (bodyweight≥20 kg), a radiopaque marker was placed on the cranial border of the femoral footprint of the CrCL. Computed tomography and threedimensional (3D) reconstruction of each femur was performed subsequently, followed by manual segmentation of the footprint on the 3D models and calculation of its center. Finally, virtual digital radiographs in two planes were produced and the location of the calculated center of the CrCL was expressed using three different methods (4x4 box grid method and percentage position for the medio-lateral projection; o'clock position for the disto-proximal projection). In the medio-lateral radiographs the center of the femoral footprint was consistently located in the second rectangle from the top of the most caudal column of the 4x4 grid. The mean percentage caudo-cranial and proximo-distal location was 20.2% (±2.2) and 33.8% (±3.7), respectively. In the disto-proximal radiograph, the o'clock position of the CrCL center was between 2 and 3 o'clock in 97.6% of cases. The radiographic location of the center of the femoral footprint can be consistently predicted in medio-lateral and disto-proximal stifle radiographs of dogs over 20 kg. The reported data can be used to plan and verify the placement of the femoral tunnel opening for intra-articular anatomic CrCL repair.

Arthroscopic assisted femoral tunnel drilling for the intra-articular anatomic cranial cruciate ligament reconstruction in dogs.

To develop and test an arthroscopic aiming device for extra- to intra-articular femoral tunnel drilling emerging at the center of the femoral insertion of the cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) in medium to large breed dogs. Hindlimbs (n=12) of six cadaveric dogs (≥20kg bodyweight). One hindlimb from each cadaver was randomly chosen. On a standard medio-lateral stifle radiograph the caudo-cranial position of the CrCL center was measured and transferred onto an adjustable aiming device. After arthroscopic debridement of the CrCL the aiming device was hooked behind the lateral condyle and a 2.4mm guide pin was placed from extra- to intra-articular. The intra-articular position of the resulting bone tunnel was evaluated radiographically as well as compared to the anatomic CrCl center of the contralateral hindlimb using 3D renderings. According to the postoperative radiographs all six drill tunnels were located at or near the CrCL center. The median absolute 3D error from the anatomical center of the CrCL was 0.6mm (range: 0.2-0.9mm). Precise anatomic placement of the femoral tunnel for intra-articular repair of the CrCL was achieved using an adjustable aiming device. The proposed technique will reduce femoral tunnel misplacement when performing intra-articular CrCL repair in dogs. In combination with the published technique for arthroscopic tibial tunnel drilling using a similar aiming device, the technical requirements for arthroscopic assisted tunnel positioning for anatomical graft replacement are available.

Long-term functional outcome after surgical repair of cranial cruciate ligament disease in dogs.

BackgroundCranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is a very common cause of pelvic limb lameness in dogs. Few studies, using objective and validated outcome evaluation methods, have been published to evaluate long-term (>1 year) outcome after CCL repair. A group of 47 dogs with CCL rupture treated with intracapsular, extracapsular, and osteotomy techniques, and 21 healthy control dogs were enrolled in this study. To evaluate long-term surgical outcome, at a minimum of 1.5 years after unilateral CCL surgery, force plate, orthopedic, radiographic, and physiotherapeutic examinations, including evaluation of active range of motion (AROM), symmetry of thrust from the ground, symmetry of muscle mass, and static weight bearing (SWB) of pelvic limbs, and goniometry of the stifle and tarsal joints, were done.ResultsAt a mean of 2.8 ± 0.9 years after surgery, no significant differences were found in average ground reaction forces or SWB between the surgically treated and control dog limbs, when dogs with no other orthopedic findings were included (n = 21). However, in surgically treated limbs, approximately 30% of the dogs had decreased static or dynamic weight bearing when symmetry of weight bearing was evaluated, 40-50% of dogs showed limitations of AROM in sitting position, and two-thirds of dogs had weakness in thrust from the ground. The stifle joint extension angles were lower (P <0.001) and flexion angles higher (P <0.001) in surgically treated than in contralateral joints, when dogs with no contralateral stifle problems were included (n = 33). In dogs treated using the intracapsular technique, the distribution percentage per limb of peak vertical force (DPVF) in surgically treated limbs was significantly lower than in dogs treated with osteotomy techniques (P =0.044).ConclusionsThe average long-term dynamic and static weight bearing of the surgically treated limbs returned to the level of healthy limbs. However, extension and flexion angles of the surgically treated stifles remained inferior to healthy joints, and impairment of AROM and weakness in thrust from the ground in the surgically treated limbs were frequently present. Ground reaction forces may be inadequate as a sole method for assessing functional outcome after cranial cruciate ligament repair.

Technical Difficulties During the Training Phase for Tightrope® and Percutaneous Lateral Fabellar Suture Techniques for Cranial Cruciate Ligament Repair

To compare level of difficulty, deviations from technical description and postoperative assessment during the training of veterinary students, small animal surgical residents, and a board certified surgeon for Tightrope® (TR) and percutaneous lateral fabella suture (pLFS) techniques for cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) repair. Prospective study. Cadaveric canine pelvic limbs (n = 32). Sixteen 3rd year veterinary students, 6 small animal surgical residents and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons performed the TR and pLFS techniques on paired limbs. Perceived level of difficulty, duration of surgery, and technical deviations were assessed by questionnaire, radiographs, and dissection. Results were compared between techniques with McNemar's test. The TR procedure was perceived as more technically demanding than the pLFS by veterinary students and residents. Technical deviations were overall more common after TR than pLFS, and in limbs repaired by students, regardless of procedure. The most difficult aspect of the TR consists of the bone tunnels whereas for pLFS it was passing the suture around the femorofabellar ligament. The sensitivity of radiographs for detection of technical deviations was 39% after TR and 50% after pLFS. Technical deviations are more common during the training phase of TR than pLFS, and the sensitivity of radiographs to detect those is low. Repeated practice on cadavers followed by dissection is recommended before use in patients.

Use of an owner questionnaire to evaluate long-term surgical outcome and chronic pain after cranial cruciate ligament repair in dogs: 253 cases (2004–2006)

To evaluate, by means of an owner questionnaire, long-term outcome and prevalence of chronic pain after cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) surgery in dogs. Retrospective case series. 253 dogs with surgically treated CCL rupture. Data from surgical records of dogs that underwent surgical repair of CCL between 2004 and 2006 were reviewed. An owner questionnaire, including the validated Helsinki chronic pain index (HCPI), served to evaluate long-term outcome and prevalence of chronic pain after surgical repair by means of intracapsular, extracapsular, or osteotomy techniques. Additional questions inquired about recovery and rehabilitation after surgery, current well-being, medications, and adjunct treatments. Of 507 questionnaires, 272 (53.6%) were returned; 19 were excluded because of incomplete answers. Mean ± SD follow-up time was 2.7 ± 0.8 years (range, 1.3 to 4.5 years). Owners considered surgical outcome as excellent in 122 of 226 (54.0%) dogs, good in 97 (42.9%), fair in 0 (0%), and poor in 7 (3.1%). At follow-up, the mean ± SD HCPI for 206 dogs was 8.9 ± 6.3 (range, 0 to 24). Of these 206 dogs, 64 (31.1%) had an HCPI ≥ 12, indicating chronic pain. Mean HCPI in dogs with a good outcome (11.8 ± 5.4; 95% confidence interval, 10.6 to 12.9) was significantly higher than that for dogs with an excellent outcome (6.2 ± 5.7; 95% confidence interval, 5.1 to 7.2). Owner-reported postoperative lameness was significantly shorter after osteotomy techniques, compared with lameness duration after the intracapsular technique. On the basis of owner assessment, long-term chronic pain was found in approximately 30% of dogs after CCL repair.

Surgical stabilization of shoulder luxation in a pot-bellied pig

Case Description-A 4.6-month-old pot-bellied pig was evaluated because of non-weight-bearing lameness (grade 5/5) in the right forelimb of 4 days' duration. Clinical Findings-Clinical and radiographic examination revealed a closed, lateral luxation of the right shoulder joint. Treatment and Outcome-Initial attempts at closed reduction failed to provide adequate stability of the shoulder joint. Open reduction and internal fixation by placement of 2 lateral tension sutures with a system designed for canine cranial cruciate ligament repair provided adequate joint stability and a successful outcome. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Stabilization of the shoulder joint with lateral tension sutures after open reduction should be considered for management of lateral shoulder luxation in pot-bellied pigs.

Intra-articular injections of autologous platelet concentrates in dogs with surgical reparation of cranial cruciate ligament rupture

The objective of this study was to evaluate by clinical, radiographic, and force plate gait analyses the effect of post-surgical intra-articular injections of autologous platelet concentrates (PC) in a small group of dogs with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture. The ten dogs used in this study were initially presented with CCL rupture and underwent ligament replacement surgery by fascia lata autograft guided by arthroscopy. Six dogs received three intra-articular injections of PC (PC group); one dose was injected immediately after surgery, and two additional doses were injected at two-week intervals. The remaining four dogs received only nutraceuticals (control group). All dogs were evaluated by clinical examination, serial radiography, and force plate gait analyses at monthly intervals up to 90 days. The clinical follow-up of the PC-treated group indicated a better outcome than the control group. Radiographic evaluation was not conclusive. Values of peak vertical reaction force and vertical impulse of the affected limbs were only significantly larger on the 90th postoperative day in the PC group compared to the control group. Our results indicate that autologous PC might improve functional outcome after intra-articular cranial cruciate ligament repair. The effect of PC when using other repair procedures warrants additional studies.

Hypotension and pruritus induced by neuraxial anaesthesia in a cat

Although preventive epidural morphine administration with bupivacaine is effective in producing long-lasting analgesia, neuraxial anaesthesia can cause cardiovascular depression and pruritus. This report presents the development and treatment of hypotension and pruritus after intrathecal morphine and bupivacaine administration in a 3-year-old female spayed Domestic Short-hair cat presented for surgical repair of a torn right cranial cruciate ligament. Opioid-induced pruritus is not usually considered a frequently occurring complication, but may be easily misinterpreted as being dysphoria in recovery. It can be treated by administration of ondansetron, with human patients usually responding within 30 min after treatment.

The intercondylar fossa indices of male and female dog femora

The intercondylar fossa (ICF) indices can be used to evaluate fossa geometry, which may in turn affect the function, pathology and intracapsular surgical repair of the cranial cruciate ligament. The measurements of digital images of the distal femur of 44 dogs were used to calculate the fossa width, shape, height and area indices. The mean values of fossa width index were found to be 0.19, 0.28 and 0.37 at the cranial, central, and caudal levels of the fossa, respectively. The mean values for fossa shape, height and area indices were found to be 0.71, 0.33, and 0.16, respectively. The differences in ICF indices between male and female dog were not significant. Therefore, it is suggested that gender differences related to ICF geometry may not have any effect on incidence of cranial cruciate ligament injury in dogs.

Development and In Situ Application of an Adjustable Aiming Device to Guide Extra‐ to Intraarticular Tibial Tunnel Drilling for the Insertion of the Cranial Cruciate Ligament in Dogs

To develop and test an arthroscopic aiming device for extra- to intraarticular tibial tunnel drilling emerging at the center of the tibial insertion (CenterTib) of the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) in medium to large breed dogs. Descriptive experimental study. Fifty-two cadaveric hind limbs of dogs >or=20 kg BW. The mediolateral position and craniocaudal position (ccPos) of CenterTib in relation to the caudomedial meniscotibial ligament were measured on photographs of 46 dissected tibial plateaus. The proximal tibial depth (TibDepth) was determined on lateral radiographs and its correlation with ccPos was assessed using linear regression analysis. Extra- to intraarticular arthroscopic tibial tunnel drilling was performed in 6 independent cadaveric stifles. A C-guide with an adjustable craniocaudal offset was constructed and adjusted according to ccPos estimated based on TibDepth. The position of the resulting bone tunnels was compared with the position of the CenterTib. Pearson's correlation between TibDepth and ccPos was strong (R=0.86; P<.001). ccPos (y) as a function of TibDepth (x) can be expressed as y=-4.8+0.3x. Arthroscopic tunnel drilling resulted in a median deviation of the drill tunnels around the CenterTib of 1 mm. The regression equation and aiming device permit localization and targeting of CenterTib during extra- to intraarticular tibial bone tunnel drilling in vitro. The proposed technique may reduce tibial tunnel misplacement when performing intraarticular CCL repair using a tibial bone tunnel.

To compare 4 therapeutic techniques to reduce soft tissue swelling after cranial cruciate ligament repair in the dog. Prospective study. Twenty-four dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR). Dogs with naturally occurring CCLR, were surgically repaired by an extracapsular technique and randomly divided into 4 treatment groups (cold compression [CC], modified Robert Jones bandage [B], cold compression and bandage [CCB], and microcurrent electrical therapy and bandage [METB]) each with 6 dogs. Data were collected at 2 time points, the morning after surgery before the 1st treatment and 72 hours later after the last treatment. Limb girth was measured at 3 anatomic locations to assess soft tissue swelling and all affected limbs were evaluated for presence (or absence) of pitting edema and bruising. Analysis of covariance was used to determine effect of treatment on the percent change in circumference. Duncan's multiple-range test was used to determine differences in treatment groups circumferential percent change over 72 hours. Statistical significance was set at P<.05. Use of a Robert Jones bandage had the least effect on reducing postoperative soft tissue swelling with CC, METB, and CCB being equally effective in reducing swelling by 72 hours after surgery. Use of cold compresses alone or with a bandage, or using microcurrent electrical therapy in combination with a bandage decreases soft tissue swelling over 72 hours more than a bandaging alone after extracapsular repair of CCLR. CC, METB, and CCB should be considered as viable options to limit soft tissue swelling after extracapsular repair of CCLR in dogs.
