Some Thoughts on Ideological and Political Education in Mechanical Specialized Courses

With the continuous deepening of education reform, ideological and political education in the curriculum has become an important component of higher education. As an important discipline in science and engineering, the construction of ideological and political education in mechanical specialized courses has also received widespread attention. At present, there are still some prominent contradictions and problems in the ideological and political construction of mechanical specialized courses in China. This article addresses these contradictory issues and, based on the current situation, proposes specific measures to effectively enhance the ideological and political effects of mechanical specialized courses from multiple dimensions and perspectives, including strengthening ideological and political education awareness, exploring ideological and political elements in courses, clarifying teaching objectives and improving evaluation systems, and strengthening campus cultural construction. The aim is to provide useful references for relevant educators.

Freedom and constraints: English learners’ investment in writing through digital multimodal composing

In the field of teaching English as an Additional Language (EAL), digital multimodal composing (DMC) has been increasingly used as a pedagogical approach to support students' writing. While literature highlights DMC has the potential to encourage EAL learners' investment in writing afforded by digital tools, few studies have explored what contextual factors may shape EAL learners' identities in DMC and how they can impact their investment in English writing. This article reports on a qualitative study that investigates the contextual factors that come into play in EAL students' social identity and investment in English writing through DMC in an academic literacy course in China. Through thematic analysis, this study identifies that students' investment in English writing through the DMC project interacted with two major forces in the literacy classroom setting contextualized in the Chinese education system: freedom and constraints. Under such influence, students took on two conflicting identities: free composers and disciplined language learners. Further, I argue that they experienced tensions in these identities. However, the negotiation of the tensions tended to be productive in terms of students’ investment in English writing, which ultimately fostered an enriched understanding of writing.

Exploring the effects of problem-based learning on English as a foreign language students: a mixed-methods approach in Chinese higher education

ABSTRACT In this mixed-methods study, we investigated the relationship between instructional approach, students’ self-efficacy beliefs, and students’ English language proficiency, as well as the perceptions of the instructor and students regarding problem-based learning (PBL) in a College English course in China. Using path analysis, we assessed the effectiveness of PBL as compared to traditional lecture-based instruction, focusing on PBL’s impact on Chinese college students’ self-efficacy beliefs and English proficiency. We also explored the perceptions of both instructors and students regarding PBL using their qualitative feedback. Two classes of College English (N = 57) at a tier-one university in China were randomly assigned to either a PBL or a traditional lecture condition for one semester, while controlling for students’ initial English placement test scores. The results indicated that PBL instruction fostered students’ English proficiency, and students’ self-efficacy positively impacted their English proficiency, as measured by a national English standardized test. However, PBL did not impact students’ self-efficacy beliefs. Both the instructor and students held positive attitudes towards PBL instruction in the English classroom, and students made recommendations for activities and ways to improve. Further investigation of PBL’s effectiveness is needed to support English as a foreign language students’ language acquisition in a global context.

Online digital health and informatics education for undergraduate nursing students in China: impacts and recommendations

BackgroundDigital health plays a vital role in healthcare services. Governments in many countries, including China, are increasingly advocating for the appropriate use of digital technologies to address significant health system challenges. It is crucial to incorporate digital health education into the curriculum for future nurses to adapt to the changes in the digital medical system. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of an online Digital Health and Informatics Course in China on the knowledge and comprehension of key digital health and informatics topics, self-assessment of nursing informatics competencies, and satisfaction among undergraduate nursing students. The findings of this study provide recommendations for the design and implementation of future digital health education.MethodsThis study employed a one-group, quasi-experimental mixed-methods design with pre- and post-assessments. The participants received digital health and informatics education through six three-hour online sessions in six interactive days, with online self-learning materials in between. An online quiz and focus group discussions pre- and post the course were designed to evaluate the knowledge and comprehension of key digital health and informatics topics. Also, a validated Chinese version of the Self-assessment of Nursing Informatics Competencies Scale was conducted pre- and post-course to assess self-assessment of nursing informatics competencies. Additionally, all students were invited to participate in an online survey with a performance-focused course evaluation form as well as focus group discussions to gather their feedback on the learning experience and their evaluations of the course.ResultsA total of 24 undergraduate nursing students were enrolled in the course. All students completed all sessions of this course, resulting in an attendance rate of 100%. Additionally, all students completed both pre- and post-assessments. In terms of the knowledge and comprehension of key digital health and informatics topics, scores of the quiz on knowledge assessment improved from the pre-test [mean pretest score: 78.33 (SD 6.005)] to the post-test [mean post-test score: 83.17 (SD 4.86)] upon completion of the course (P < 0.001). Also, students acknowledged that the course enhanced their knowledge and comprehension of informatics and digital health, the benefits of (nursing) informatics in clinical practice, and the role of health care professionals in informatics and digital health. In terms of self-assessment of nursing informatics competencies, scores on nursing informatics attitudes demonstrated significant improvement (P < 0.001). Furthermore, students reported high satisfaction with various aspects of this course, including the opportunity to explore broad horizons in informatics for future careers, engaging in group discussions, and analyzing case studies on the use of informatics and digital health in clinical practice.ConclusionsThis Online Digital Health and Informatics education effectively improved undergraduate nursing students’ knowledge and comprehension of the key digital health and informatics topics, nursing informatics attitudes in the self-assessment of nursing informatics competency with high levels of satisfaction. In order to ensure that future education in digital health and informatics for nursing students is in line with the technological advancements in clinical settings, it is necessary to foster collaboration between medical school training and clinical practice. This collaboration should involve the use of clinical examples to illustrate advanced digital health applications and the inclusion of practical exercises on the use of digital health technology in clinical settings.

Application of Cooperative Learning and Flipped Classrooms in University Basketball Courses in China

This study investigates the application of the teaching model combining cooperative learning and flipped classrooms in university basketball courses in China. By analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional basketball teaching model and students’ satisfaction with the course, the necessity of implementing cooperative learning and flipped classrooms is proposed. The study planned in detail the implementation strategies before class, in the classroom, and after class, and compared them with the control group through an experimental design. The experimental results showed that the new teaching mode demonstrated significant advantages in terms of learning outcomes, student satisfaction, and teacher evaluation. This study provides a valuable reference for the future reform of the physical education curriculum.

A Scoping Review of Research on English Academic Writing for Chinese Graduate Students

Based on 16 studies on Chinese graduate students' English academic writing, this paper summarizes the current research trends in China from the aspect of research methods and content. After combing and summarizing, it is found that: (1) most relevant researches in China have adopted three forms of research methods, which are: questionnaire survey or interview survey, classroom observation and text analysis. (2) currently, challenges in the English academic writing process for Chinese graduate students primarily revolve around inappropriate language usage and insufficient writing skills. (3) The solutions proposed at present mainly include improving students' writing ability in practical exercises, implementing new teaching models and introducing new teaching methods. It is helpful to find and summarize the problems existing in the current English academic writing courses in China, as well as the difficulties existing in the process of English academic writing for Chinese graduate students, so as to help them improve their English academic writing ability.

A Genre Theory Contextualization for Academic Writing in Chinese Higher Education

This paper explores new possibilities for teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP) writing in the context of higher education in China. Using John Swales’ Create A Research Space (CARS) model, the paper demonstrates how genre theory can be integrated into undergraduate writing courses in China’s EFL settings. This method emphasizes teaching students to structure academic papers effectively, thereby improving their understanding and application of the genre-specific conventions of academic English. The paper illustrates how the CARS model aids students by delineating their research territory, identifying gaps, and positioning their studies within ongoing academic dialogues. Additionally, the teaching cycle guides students from modeling the text, to joint construction, and finally to independent writing. Furthermore, the paper highlights the comprehensive implications of this model, including enhancing intercultural communication skills and developing critical genre awareness among students. It addresses the challenges of adapting this model to the Chinese EFL context, such as linguistic and cultural barriers, and underscores the need for contextualized teaching strategies that meet Chinese learners’ needs. To conclude, it is recommended for further research to validate the practical usage of this genre-based EAP instruction in higher education and facilitate future curriculum development.

Rethinking of EMI in Higher Education in Mainland China from a Critical View on its Efficacy

English as a medium of instruction (EMI) has gained significant popularity and development over the past decade, especially in higher education, reflecting a larger trend toward globalization. While EMI is becoming a widespread institutional practice, the bulk of research has mainly concerned with its effectiveness for subject content and language proficiency. Those research appeared to have reached a point of saturation, necessitating a new perspective focused on problem-solving. However, previous studies have shown inconsistent findings whether students benefit from taking content-based courses through a language that they are still developing. Researchers should promptly examine the elements that impact efficacy, such as students' inadequate English proficiency and teachers' insufficient pedagogical ability. This study analyse the current situation and major problems of EMI course in colleges and universities. From students' learning adaptations, and teachers' pedagogical proficiency, this study clarifies with a view to providing certain insights for the development of EMI courses in China.

The Comparison of Teaching Achievement Evaluation of Operating System Course

Operating system is the basic program for managing and controlling software and hardware system such as computers. It is the most basic system software that runs directly on the bare metal. Since its birth in the last century, it has been widely used in personal computers, servers, smartphones and other fields playing a vital role in our lives, work, and entertainment. Many universities in different countries offer operating system course, which provides a relatively complete introduction to the key functional modules of operating systems, from the history of operating systems to the implementation of core principles. This paper takes the operating system course of a foreign university as an example, and evaluates the teaching result of the operating system course from the aspects of the basic introduction, student training goals, performance evaluation standards and student feedback improvement measures, etc., analyzing and comparing with the actual teaching situation of this course in China.

The mediating role of resilience between emotional intelligence and academic procrastination in nursing undergraduates: A cross-sectional study.

To investigate the relationship among emotional intelligence (EI), resilience and academic procrastination (AP), and provide suggestions for the development of targeted intervention strategies and lowering of AP level of nursing undergraduates. A cross-sectional study. Three provincial universities offering nursing courses in China were investigated in this study. A convenience sample of 256 nursing undergraduates from May 2021 to September 2021 were recruited, with a response rate of 91.4%. Data were collected using face-to-face interviews. The survey tools included the General Information Questionnaire, Academic Procrastination Scale, Emotional Intelligence Scale and Resilience Scale. IBM SPSS v19.0 and Amos 22.0 were used for data analysis. The AP of sampled nursing undergraduates was at the middle level (54.4 ± 21.5). The AP of nursing undergraduates was negatively correlated with EI and resilience. Moreover, the analysis on the mediating role of resilience via structural equation model showed a good fit, with χ2/df = 2.34, RMSEA = 0.07, CFI = 0.99, GFI = 0.95, TLI = 0.98. No patient or public contribution.

Interdisciplinary Case-Based Teaching Promoting the Integration of Physical Education and Health Curriculum in China

Against the backdrop of quality education, integrating physical education and health courses in China has been regarded as essential to fostering students' comprehensive development. This study explores leveraging interdisciplinary case-based teaching to promote the in-depth integration and fusion of physical education and health courses in China. The research systematically reviews the theoretical foundations of integrating physical education and health courses, interdisciplinary teaching, and case-based teaching methods in China. The study summarizes the comprehensive cases for conducting interdisciplinary case-based teaching while also pointing out the challenges in the implementation process, such as teachers' professional development lag, deficiencies in the evaluation system, and the scarcity of high-quality case resources. Finally, the study proposes strategies and recommendations in management, teacher development, and evaluation for promoting integrating physical education and health courses through interdisciplinary case-based teaching. This research provides a new practical path for optimizing physical education and health courses in China. It offers valuable insights for the integration of other disciplines, possessing both theoretical value and practical significance.

Design and Practice of Blended Teaching Mode of "MOOCs + Flipped Classroom"-- Taking "Basics of Interpretation" Course As An Example

Through investigation and observation, it is found that most English interpreting courses in China have single teaching methods, insufficient teaching means and classroom feedback. Meanwhile, interpretation teaching is greatly limited by teaching time and space. Reliance on the traditional paper textbook and teacher-centered teaching mode leads to a large number of students' lack of interest and participation, which affects students' professional development over time. Starting from the concept of flipped classroom and combining with the online MOOCs course "Basics of Interpretation" , this study aims to explore the role of blended teaching model in improving traditional interpreting teaching. The practice has proved that the blended teaching mode of "MOOCs + Flipped Classroom" has played a positive role in reforming and enriching traditional interpretation classes, improving teaching mode and content, expanding course duration, and providing effective feedback.

A127: Difficulties Facing and Coping Strategies of Physical Education and Health Interdisciplinary Teaching in China

Purpose: In response to the national demand for compound talents, “Physical Education (PE) and Health Curriculum (2022 version) for Compulsory Education” proposes to include interdisciplinary teaching in five major courses in China. Due to the lack of course cases for reference, there’s a certain gap between interdisciplinary theory and practice. Therefore, it’s urgent to analyze the difficulties faced by interdisciplinary teaching and find out the coping strategies. Methods: By using keywords such as "interdisciplinary teaching," "PE and health curriculum," and "interdisciplinary," this study collected and studied 39 articles from CNKI, Web of Science, Scopus, and other databases, and analyzed the development process, problems, and countermeasures of interdisciplinary teaching in various countries. Results: Analyses revealed difficulties of implementing interdisciplinary teaching, including (1) unbalanced instructional materials and resources, (2) teachers’ lack of understanding of theory and practice regarding interdisciplinary teaching, (3) overlapped curriculum content, (4) lack of real integration in the classroom, and (5) lack of scientific evaluations. Coping strategies were: (1) Cooperation between internal and external organizations responsible for resource supply, (2) Carry out pre-service and in-service teachers’ training, (3) modifications of PE Curriculum, and (4) establish an evaluation system. Conclusion: To promote interdisciplinary teaching in physical education and health in the future, schools are recommended to cooperate with external institutions and universities to explore the theoretical basis and internal logic of thematic learning design of interdisciplinary projects. Also, schools may build a solid learning community for PE teachers, innovate PE curriculum models, share instructional examples, and create evaluation mechanisms to solve current problems.

Research on the Connotation Development of Civil Engineering Materials Courses in Universities of Applied Sciences, a High Level in China

German universities of applied sciences have provided a large number of technical talents to society, and have made significant contributions to the enhancement of German education and industry. Drawing on the professional construction experience of German universities of applied sciences, this paper summarizes the path of civil engineering materials courses in China's high-level applied universities. The proposals for curriculum reform were discussed. Colleges and universities can cultivate professionals with strong hands-on abilities, strong exploration abilities, and a scientific research spirit. In addition, this paper puts forward that China needs to make changes from three levels: the country, universities, and teachers. Based on learning from the experience of collaborative education between teaching and scientific research in German universities, we have embarked on a road of education with China characteristics.

Investigation on the Current Situation of Life Education and Reflection on the General Goal of Life Education for Contemporary Chinese Medical Students

Life education is an important subject of contemporary college education. The responsibility and pressure of contemporary college students are increasing rapidly, but the overall construction of psychological consultation and mental health courses in China is not mature, there still remaining the difficulty to solve psychological problems of college students from the source. At present, the importance of life education has been generally recognized all over the world, and amounts of increasingly perfect life education systems in schools, families, society and other aspects have been established, so as to effectively and permanently protect the mental health of college students. This article conducts an overall investigation on the current situation of life education in China and other countries, and discusses the overall goal of life education for contemporary Chinese medical students for reference.
