This research is focused on gaining a deeper understanding of the factors that impact the performance of the shear screw couplers and to develop practical enhancements for improved performances. To achieve this objective, two different types of coupler systems were developed. Through a series of laboratory tests, the performances of these coupler systems with the proposed improvements were evaluated. The improvements made to the splices led to a significant increase in the overall performance of the new devices when compared to the traditional shear screw couplers. As a result, there were enhancements in the yield load, ultimate strength, and strain capacity, along with a substantial reduction in slippage between the coupler sleeves and the reinforcing bars. Additionally, there was a decrease in the length of the couplers and the size or number of the lock bolts.
