Design and Refinement of a Faculty Workload Estimator

ObjectiveThis paper describes the creation and refinement of a Workload Estimator to be used at Colleges/Schools of pharmacy to calculate faculty workload. MethodsWe describe the initial development of the Workload Estimator for pharmacy practice faculty, including the consensus-building methodology and the implementation process. Additionally, we describe the annual refinement and expansion of use to pharmaceutical and administrative sciences faculty. ResultsThe final product is an Excel file with built-in multiplication factors used to estimate pharmacy faculty workload. ConclusionThis Workload Estimator was identified as the most comprehensive and readily adaptable tool to estimate pharmacy faculty workload in July 2023 by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Council of Faculties, and Council of Deans Task Force on Faculty Workload. The Workload Estimator is currently being studied in a multi-institutional implementation study across dozens of diverse programs across the country with norming data and qualitative perspectives on its use being collected and shared with the Academy in 2024.

A stepwise approach to integrating the new essentials into a master's entry nursing curriculum

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) released updated nursing curriculum Essentials in 2021. The new Essentials document reflects an innovative and unique approach to nursing education and provides a framework for competency-based education and assessment to prepare students to work in a profession that is ever-changing.The first in the state of Oregon, a Masters Entry into Professional Nursing program was launched with a curriculum based on the new Essentials with the goal to remain true to the program's current concept-based approach while incorporating elements of a competency-based curriculum. As with all new programs, curricular design is paramount and requires careful planning to ensure the curriculum aligns with education trends, meets the needs of diverse learners, adheres to regulatory requirements and standards, and has strong faculty buy-in.Curriculum development done in a systematic fashion with faculty input is imperative. All current faculty were invited by the school of nursing (SON) leadership to participate in the curriculum development process. Regularly scheduled meetings were held, and all interested faculty participants were able to provide input. This process also included the SON Curriculum Committee and SON Faculty Council, to ensure all faculty were included in the process and appraised of the curriculum development. The faculty members who participated in the systematic development process then served as advocates for the new curriculum and helped create a smooth transition when the new MEPN program was introduced.

A National Survey of Perceptions Around Conditions Associated With Pharmacy Faculty Workload Equity

ObjectiveTo assess pharmacy faculty members’ perceptions of conditions associated with workload equity and factors that can improve workload equity. MethodsA 26-item survey instrument was developed and distributed via email to members of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Council of Faculties. Questions pertained to the workload distribution, fairness in assignment, and perception of the conditions associated with workload equity (transparency, context, credit, clarity, norms, and accountability) as well as institutional and individual demographics. ResultsA total of 662 responses were obtained (response rate 15.9%). Respondents’ demographics were comparable to available national data. Approximately 41% of respondents reported their institutions did not have a written faculty workload policy. Most respondents reported their workload assignment was fair (highest with research/scholarship) but reported only moderate alignment between assigned and actual workloads. The rating level for what domains the primary decision maker uses to assign workload was highest for context, followed by credit, clarity, and transparency. Transparency was reported as the most needed condition to improve faculty perception of workload equity. Respondents also rated increasing trust between leadership and faculty and increasing productivity and accountability as the most important reasons to minimize workload inequities. ConclusionThis was the first national survey of pharmacy faculty perceptions around the conditions associated with workload equity. Though additional research is needed in this area, programs can work to implement strategies associated with all of the conditions, particularly transparency, to improve faculty perceptions of equity.

Professional training and continuing professional development of masters in dentistry under the extreme conditions of COVID-19 and martial law in Ukraine

The III Scientific and practical conference with international participation “Professional training of dentistry specialists in the extreme conditions of modernity”, which was held on April 26–27, 2023 at the Dental Medical Center of the Bogomolets National Medical University, was devoted to the issues of continuous dental education in Ukraine in the conditions of war. The conference was organized by the Ukrainian Association of Dental Education (UADE), where the chairman of the organizing committee was the president of the UADE, professor Yaroslava Kulbashna and the deputy chairman — vice president of the UADE, associate professor Iryna Skrypnyk. It was very pleasant to feel the support of the rectorate of the Bogomolets National Medical University — its rector Yuriy Kuchin, vice rectors, professors Oleksandr Naumenko, Rimma Skrypnyk and Oleksandr Kanyura, president of the NGO «Ukrainian Dental Association», professor Iryna Mazur, director of the Institute of Postgraduate Education, professor Tatiana Vezhnovets, members of the UADE and the student council of the dental faculty. The representative level of the guests and participants of the event showed that despite the war in our country, the topic of continuing education of future dentists, interns and doctors is in the focus of attention of government officials in the field of education and medicine, teachers, students, postgraduate students of higher medical and postgraduate education institutions. In particular, the event was attended by First Deputy Minister of Health of Ukraine, professor Serhiy Dubrov, People’s Deputy of Ukraine Inna Sovsun, director of the Department of the Ukrainian State Center for International Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, candidate of historical sciences Olena Shapovalova.

The end of World War II tore Poland from one totalitarianism (Nazism) and pushed it into the clutches of another, equally dangerous — communism. The new order and the new ideology took over Polish reality in its entirety. Unfortunately, this also applied to science and broadly understood university life. The new authorities regulated the personnel policy almost at whim, removing from the university space those individuals considered dangerous and defiant towards the socialist system. Another, milder manifestation of disciplining scholars who did not agree to the introduction of Marxism at universities was the forced transfer of professors to other universities, sometimes hundreds of kilometers away.
 The article concerns one of the most outstanding Polish lawyers of the 20th century — Prof. Jan Gwiazdomorski, and more specifically, his official relocation from the Jagiellonian University to work at the University of Wrocław. This transfer was a form of repression applied by the authorities to the scholar who did not identify himself with the new, post-war Polish political system. On the other hand, the transfer weakened the scientific community of the Jagiellonian University, which also did not hold favorable views towards socialist reality.
 The article presents hitherto unknown information relating to the Wrocław period in the scientific and didactic career of this luminary of Polish civil law. The source basis of the work are archival materials — a query of Jan Gwiazdomarski’s personal files and minutes of the Faculty Councils located in the Archives of the University of Wrocław. The author, referring to the discussed phenomenon, uses a historical and retrospective approach (he examines the problem from a present-day perspective) and indicates the legal grounds for transferring the scholar to the University of Wrocław.

Recommendations and Next Steps For Competency-Based Pharmacy Education

In July 2021, the chairs of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Council of Deans, Council of Faculties, and Council of Sections developed a task force to discuss potential ways to improve pharmacy education. The Competency-Based Education (CBE) Joint Task Force was created to explore the pros and cons of advancing a competency-based approach to pharmacy education (CBPE) and to determine ways to create more flexibility within pharmacy curricula to enable CBE. To achieve these goals, the Task Force systematically reviewed available resources and outlined the pros and cons of CBPE, best practices for implementation, strategies to minimize barriers, and recommendations on whether CBE should be implemented in pharmacy education. This commentary summarizes the Task Force’s findings regarding whether CBPE is a suitable approach for pharmacy education and the next steps if implemented.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE OF INSTITUTIONS OF PUBLIC EDUCATION OF THE USSR IN THE 1920s

The article examines the issue of the management system of the first Soviet pedagogical institutions of higher education in the 1920s - institutes of public education. On the basis of normative documents that established the management system of each higher education institution, the scope of duties of the rector, political commissar, activities of institute and faculty councils, commissions, general meetings, etc. were revealed.

The Challenge of Curricular Overload in the Pharmacy Academy

The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Council of Faculties commissioned a task force during the 2021–2022 academic year to examine the problem of curricular overload. As a result of this task force and the Academy-wide discussions around curricular overload, a consensus has formed around the significance of defining and addressing this challenge. Many institutions have begun work on identifying solutions to curricular overload. This theme issue will identify and describe current solutions to curriculum overload that can be implemented at the course, curricular, or Academy level. Future directions are also described. This introduction provides an overview of the theme issue.

Gender differences in the risk of developing obesity related disease can be explained by sex‐specific molecular signatures that regulates adipose endothelial cell growth

Obesity is the excessive growth of adipose tissue resulting from the chronic consumption of excess calories and is a recognised risk factor for developing cardio-metabolic diseases. There is however a significant variation in the size and expandibility of different adipose tissue in humans. The inability of adipose tissue to expand “safely” leads to ectopic fat deposition, causing insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular conditions – which are more prevalent in men than women. Thus, the mechanisms that control the expandability of adipose tissue are key factors in determining diabetes risk in obesity. An interesting study from York University have provided new insights on the biological underpinning in gender differences in the risk of developing obesity-related diseases. Previous study from this group has observed that when mice become obese, females grow more new blood vessels to supply the expanding fat tissue with oxygen and nutrients, whereas males grow a lot less. To understand the mechanism regulating this, the team used software to help sift through thousands of genes to zero in on the ones that would be associated with blood vessel growth. They discovered that processes associated with the proliferation of new blood vessels were high in the female mice, whereas the males had a high level of processes associated with inflammation. Thereafter, the investigators examined the behaviour of the endothelial cells ex-vivo. Interestingly, they observed that even when these cells were studied ex-vivo, male and female endothelial cells still behave very differently from each other - female endothelial cells replicated faster, while male endothelial cells displayed greater sensitivity to an inflammatory stimulus. Further studies to investigate the effects of specific genes in humans that regulate endothelial cells growth will provide potential therapeutic target to manage and treat obesity related cardio-metabolic diseases. The study was funded by a grant through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, as well as the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada and York's Faculty of Health.

Designing, implementing, and evaluating the process of action plan management at Isfahan Medical School.

Planning, organizing, and coordinating are inevitable in pursuing the faculty and university's goals, which cannot be achieved without having desirable goals, prioritization, and AP (action plan). This study designed, implemented, and evaluated APM (Action plan management) to increase the quality of educational, research, and management programs. A developmental study was conducted at Isfahan Medical School in 2019. The participants were selected by census sampling, and the target population comprised all deputies (8 ones) and departments (33 ones). This study was carried out in seven steps with a combined method of reviewing literature, document analysis, focus group, and questionnaire. The steps were forming the APM committee, regulating a planned process, designing and issuing the faculty's general policies, using expertise and getting feedback, monitoring the program, final reporting, and the poll. The response rate of the departments was 90.2%; the highest and lowest comprehensiveness scores of AP were 100% and 38%, and the highest and lowest performance monitoring scores were 100% and 25%. The mean and standard deviation of comprehensiveness and monitoring were 76 ± 0.1% and 69 ± 0.4%, 82 ± 0.1% and 73 ± 0.1%, and 72 ± 0.2% and 63 ± 0.4% in the basic science departments, clinical departments, and deputies, respectively. The highest agreement (4.8 ± 0.4) was related to the items "AP is as one of the important functions of management, looking to the future" and "AP is effective in the development of any organization." Regulating a designed process with a clear guideline, developing 24 general policies for the faculty, forming a committee to monitor the AP, and evaluating and giving feedback to the units were the most important results of this study. Also, the selected departments were introduced, and the progress report was presented to the faculty councils. Further studies were proposed to develop long-term plans, and information management was suggested to measure the progress of different units over time according to the defined goals.

The article presents material on the activities of a scientist in the field of physical education (school, university) and pedagogical theory, professor of the Transbaikal State University, doctor of pedagogical sciences, professor Bordonskaya Lidiya Aleksandrovna (date of birth November 12, 1947). In different years, L. A. Bordonskaya was the dean of the Faculty of Physics of the Chita State Pedagogical Institute named after I. I. N. G. Chernyshevsky (1983–1987), head of the Department of Physics, Theory and Methods of Teaching Physics (1997–2004), director of the Research Institute for the Development of Education (2003–2008). Also for many years she was a member of the faculty council, secretary of the Academic Council of the University, since 2009 she worked as deputy chairman of the Editorial Board of the journal “Scientific Notes of the Transbaikal State Humanitarian and Pedagogical University named after I. I. N. G. Chernyshevsky”. From 1996 to the present, she has been in charge of the research laboratory on the problems of higher education. L. A. Bordonskaya teaches a wide range of courses; she is the supervisor of postgraduate and doctoral students, director of master’s programs. Navigating the glass labyrinth: Addressing gender diversity in Australian and New Zealand representative radiology leadership.

Gender inequity among representative leadership in Clinical Radiology is a global issue, with the lack of gender diversity in leadership even more marked when compared to workforce representation. Women leaders face a disproportionate magnitude of seen and unseen challenges to leadership engagement and progression when compared to men (a 'glass labyrinth'), which is likely contributing to this discrepancy. The aim of the study was to examine and reflect on the state of gender diversity in representative leadership within the RANZCR Faculty of Clinical Radiology. Review of the 2021 Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) Board, Clinical Radiology Faculty Council and local Branch Committees with regard to the numbers of women and men in representative roles. In 2021, the RANZCR Board had no women representatives from Clinical Radiology (one woman representative from Radiation Oncology). 1/5 Clinical Radiology Faculty Council office Bearers were women. Local Branch Committees had 16.3% (13/80) women representatives. Three branches (the NSW, ACT and Victorian branches) had no women representatives. There were no women Committee Chairs, Branch Secretaries or Treasurers, with 2/7 Branch Education Officers women. The issues underpinning gender inequality in representative leadership are complex and diverse, resulting in disproportionate losses of women radiologists along the leadership pathway compared to men. Unconscious biases, including assumptions of inferior capability, capacity and credibility among women radiologist leaders, create unique challenges at organisational, institutional and personal levels. Change cannot be achieved by passive momentum alone: concrete initiatives and active engagement are required. To improve leadership diversity, strategies must be multifaceted and supported at an organisational level.

Health for All: A Report of the 2020 Association of American Medical Colleges Learn Serve Lead Meeting.

Learn Serve Lead (LSL) is the signature annual conference of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), which focuses on the most pressing issues facing American medical practice and education. Unsurprisingly, the recent AAMC LSL conference at the end of 2020 centered on the multifaceted impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and racial inequity upon the medical community. At the LSL meeting, national leaders, practicing physicians from diverse specialties, and medical trainees discussed the impact of these challenges and ongoing strategies to overcome them. These efforts paralleled the AAMC mission areas of community collaborations, medical education, clinical care, and research. Additionally, this focus aligns with the ACR's core purpose: to serve patients and society by empowering members to advance the practice, science, and professions of radiological care. ACR is a member of the AAMC Council of Faculty and Academic Society and seeks to collaborate with other medical specialties to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, contribute to medical education, and voice the value of medical imaging for patient care. We summarize the major insights of this interdisciplinary conference and present tailored recommendations for applying these insights specifically within the radiology community. In addition, we review the parallels between the ACR and the AAMC strategic plans.

“Put a Stop to the Excessive Influx”: The Rhetoric of Restriction Regarding Female and Jewish Students at Budapest University, 1900–1930

ABSTRACT The idea of a numerus clausus at Hungarian universities was first directed against female students, the majority of whom were of Jewish origin. This intersectional study of the justifications articulated in favor of restricting the university admission of Jewish and female students highlights the shifting political and social ideas of the period. Based on archival and press sources, and drawing in particular on the faculty council minutes of the Faculties of Medicine and Humanities at Budapest University, this article explores both the common and distinct features of the rhetoric directed against female and Jewish students, respectively, and focuses on the interconnected interests and fears regarding the two social groups.

Leveraging Ed-tech in the Co-curricular Space: Reflections on Design and Development Aspects of the Class Representative Induction Programme at the University of Cape Town

Every year, class representatives are elected at the University of Cape Town to represent students on academic matters in relation to a specific academic course. A vital element of this representative role is to advocate for an enabling learning environment that promotes learning excellence. In preparing class representatives for their leadership roles, the Department of Student Affairs, in partnership with the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and the Faculty Councils, host and facilitate a class representative induction programme. The induction typically utilised face-to-face synchronous teaching methods. However, since the advent of Covid-19, adaptions to the induction programme had to be made in order to reflect the new normal imposed by the pandemic. Against this backdrop, this article addresses various design-related choices encountered from an online education technology perspective. Key areas of reflection include working with the SRC Undergraduate Academic Co-ordinator and Faculty Councils as a design team in transitioning a, hitherto, synchronous programme catering for approximately 420 class representatives, from a face-to-face mode of delivery to an online mode of delivery. Particular attention is paid to the social constructivist design elements of the programme development process and how these elements were managed with regards to the enablements and constraints encountered in the virtual space by exploring the technological affordances of various ed-tech options available to student affairs practitioners. This article contributes to the practitioner literature by demonstrating how ed-tech can be leveraged to aid in the preservation of existing practices as blended learning approaches continue to shape and augment the future of co-curricular programme delivery in higher education.

LVIV REGION STATE ARCHIVE DOCUMENTS AS A SOURCE FOR THE STUDY OF CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY OF MYKHAILO HRUSHEVSKY

Summary. The purpose of the article is to investigate the Hrushevsky studies potential of SALR collections. The methodological basis of the work is an interdisciplinary approach. Particular emphasis is placed on the structural and functional system analysis of historiographical facts and the method of critical analysis of documentary material. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the attempt to comprehensively analyze Hrushevsky-related materials in the funds of SALR. Conclusions. The article has concluded that the collections of Lviv University (Fund 26) are marked by the biggest amount of materials about M. Hrushevsky. The most valuable document is the personal file of the scholar as a university professor. It contains 72 documents written in German, Ukrainian and Polish. The most diverse Hrushevsky-related materials are deposited in the 7th description of the university fund, which contains numerous office materials of the Faculty of Philosophy. Protocols of the faculty council meetings are especially informational as well. Another little-known component of this description is the semester programs of lectures and seminars and the related correspondence of M. Hrushevsky. The personal funds of Hrushevsky’s colleagues at Lviv University (K. Studynsky, L. Finkel) are also connected with Hrushevsky-related materials. Hrushevsky materials are deposited in the personal funds of other Galician figures of the time (I. Kalynovych and M. Korduba). The SALR funds contain documentation of Galician cultural and educational societies, but also of those created by or associated with M. Hrushevsky (for example, the Society of Supporters of Ukrainian Literature, Science and Art in Lviv). The large fund of the police directorate in Lviv (file 350, case 3903), contains the documents of the criminal proceedings against M. Hrushevsky that are also little known to Hrushevsky studies scholars. The above-mentioned Hrushevsky materials allow us to certify the SALR collections as one of the most diverse and informative sources for the study of the biography of M. Hrushevsky during his twenty years of life in Lviv.

Representation of Women on Journal Editorial Boards Affiliated with the Association of American Medical College's Council of Faculty and Academic Societies.

Background: The Council of Faculty and Academic Societies (CFAS) comprises representatives from medical schools and professional societies who guide the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Given the AAMC's stated mission to improve diversity and inclusion, we used gender-related representation on journal editorial boards as a proxy for evaluating CFAS member societies' commitments to equity. Methods: From screenshots of journal mastheads (n = 44) collected June 3-6, 2019, individuals were categorized by editorial position. Outcome measures included numbers of men and women among faculty, deans, department chairs, physicians, and nonphysicians on editorial boards. Outcomes were compared with 2018 AAMC and US Bureau of Labor Statistics workforce data. Results: Overall, the proportion of women among journal editors was 29.0% (364 of 1,255), range 0%-53.3%. This proportion was significantly less than the proportion of women among US medical school faculty and medical scientists. The lowest percentages of women were found among journals' section or topic editors (19.2%) and editors-in-chief (20.4%). Men were significantly more likely to be a professor or department chair and women were significantly more likely to be an associate professor or assistant professor, suggesting a bidirectional process between rank and editorial position that may inhibit the advancement of academic women, particularly women physicians. Conclusions: This study revealed disparities in the equitable representation of women among CFAS member-affiliated journal editors. Because CFAS member societies participate in a mutually beneficial relationship with the AAMC, they should strive to attain the equity goals set forth by the AAMC.

Haos u oku posmatrača - razotkrivanje jedne nazovikritike Srpskog citatnog indeksa

The article is a response to criticism published by Rajko Bukvić in Ekonomski vidici in the paper 'On quality and visibility of social and economic sciences of Serbia', more precisely in the section entitled Scandals directed by CEON/CEES: Does chaos rule in our (economic) periodic publishing? In this section, the author directly accuses CEON/CEES for producing chaos in social sciences in Serbia by "excluding" many journals from its database called the Serbian Citation Index (SCIndeks). According to the author, CEON/CEES, after the termination of the financial support by the Serbian ministry responsible for science, blackmailed journal publishers by accepting for indexation only those willing to pay a fee for content maintenance. The author also claims that excluding three journals published by the Faculty of Organizational Sciences (FON), University of Belgrade, was illegal and scandalous. He adds to his allegations against SCIndeks several other unfounded, less important issues, supported by some serious unwarranted ethical accusations against its publisher. In this response, it is demonstrated that all accusations are fabricated and malicious. The alleged exclusion of formerly indexed journals was explained as a fully justified action of "non-inclusion" of journals unwilling to pay the necessary service fee after the forced transition of SCIndeks's business model from a government-sponsored to the journals-sponsored ("diamond open access", Ševkušić, Kosanović, & Šipka, 2020). Also, the suspension of the journals published by FON was a legitimate action aimed at protecting SCIndeks from a publisher who turned out to be untrustworthy, as demonstrated by the act of concealing the blatant plagiarism in the PhD thesis of the current Minister of Finance in the Serbian Government. The decision was reinforced by the discovery of a history of publishing in predatory journals by many members of the journals' editorial boards, the Dean's Collegium, and the Faculty Council. The author of the criticism is unmasked as lacking not only the basic knowledge on scientometrics, but also research and ethic integrity.
