Role of plant growth promoting fungi and doses of chemical fertilizers in improving agronomic response for sustainable wheat crop production

Plant growth promoting fungi PGPF is considered a major biological technique that results in significant plant growth and yield. Use of high doses of chemical fertilizers increased cost of crop production and environmental pollution. PGPF could be a reliable alternative to reduce application of agrochemicals such as chemical fertilizers in modern agriculture. The present study evaluated the role of these fungi with chemical fertilizer of DAP applied through different doses in agronomic response of production of 2 varieties of Wheat (Ibaa99 and Rasheed) at 2 agricultural seasons 2019-2020-2021. Field plots conducted during 2019-2020 cropping season, to evaluate the role of adding fungal isolate called PGPF-AT with doses of DAP were (0, 50 and 100%) in 0, 120 and 240 Kg ha-1 respectively, compared with (Commercial Biofertilizer) called Natrusoil as positive control on wheat var. Ibaa99 to improve growth and yield attributes. The study was repeated in the 2020-2021 cropping seasons with var. Rasheed (to discover a variety of effects and confirm results). The results revealed that treatment PGPF-AT was exerted a highly significant increase without differences between doses of DAP 120, and 240 Kg ha-1 compared to untreated plots for both Ibaa 99 and Rasheed varieties attributes: no. of plants m-2, plant height (cm), plant dry weight (g), no. of tillers plant-1, no. of spike plant-1, spike length (cm), spike weight (g), no. of seeds spike-1, weight of 100 grain (g) and grain yield Kg m-2 in addition to fertilizer use efficiency (Kg Kg-1) in both cropping seasons.

Will economic development come at the cost of environmental pollution under fiscal pressure? evidence from resource-based cities in China.

The traditional view is that local governments are inclined to ease environmental regulations in response to fiscal pressure (FP) and alleviate FP by sacrificing the environment for economic development (ED). This paper takes Chinese Mainland resource-based cities (RBC) as the research sample but draws different conclusions. The research results are as follows: firstly, for RBC, although FP reduces environmental pollution (EP), it is not conducive to ED. Compared with non-resource-based cities (NRBC), the economic negative effect of FP in RBC is more obvious. Secondly, FP is detrimental to ED by reducing EP, and RBC have not sacrificed the environment to promote ED in the context of FP. This paper summarizes that the development path of RBC should be "optimizing government behavior → increasing FP → improving environmental quality → reducing ED level." Thirdly, the impact of FP on cities with slower economic growth and smaller economic gap is greater, and the impact of FP on cities with better environment is more obvious. This paper argues that facing FP, RBC in China will not trade EP for ED; at the same time, we suggest RBC in other countries in the face of the FP, not only thinking of promoting ED at the expense of the EP and ease the FP, but also the development of green ecological requirement, overall consideration of the relationship between EP and ED, and then achieve green and sustainable ED without degrading the environment as far as possible.

Response of Soft Wheat Varieties to Application Time of Nitrogen Fertilizer under Mediterranean Climate Conditions

Applying nitrogen fertilizer during the appropriate time is an opportunity to reduce the application amount and improve its availability in the plant, which reduces the costs of Agriculture and environmental pollution. The experiment was carried out in the winter agricultural season 2020-2021 at two sites (Nimrud and Bashiqa) to study the response of soft wheat varieties to different application time of Nitrogen fertilizer under the Mediterranean climate conditions. The experiment included four soft wheat varieties (Benghal, Ebaa-99, Rashida, Tal-Afar), three application time of Nitrogen fertilizer at tillering stage (early application), stem elongation stage (late application) as well as control treatment (no application). The results showed that the Bashiqa site excelled at grain filling stage duration, bio yield, spike number, grain yield, harvest index, while the Nimrod site excelled in the rest of the traits. The Benghal variety excelled in the majority of studied traits at both sites, while application time of Nitrogen fertilizer of stem elongation stage (late application) excelled of the majority studied traits.

The green GDP accounting system based on the BP neural network: an environmental pollution perspective

Introduction: The green GDP accounting system has become the focus of sustainable development, but a comprehensive accounting of environmental pollution cost and resource depletion cost has not yet been formed.Methods: This study measures environmental pollution cost and resource loss cost, and establishes the green GDP accounting system based on the SEEA-2012. To analyze the environmental effects brought by the adoption of green GDP accounting system, a BP neural network model including green GDP, traditional GDP and global climate indicators is constructed to predict the global climate changes.Results: The empirical results show that after the adoption of the green GDP accounting system, the global climate extreme weather can be reduced, the sea level will be lowered, and the climate problem is thus alleviated.

Medical cost of environmental pollution: evidence from the Chinese Social Survey.

Environmental pollution impairs residents' health, while the pursuit of health is highly correlated to medical costs. Understanding how environmental pollution affects medical costs is closely linked to the welfare of society. Based on theoretical analysis, this paper uses data from 5112 households of the Chinese Social Survey (CSS) in 2019, constructs a composite indicator to quantify environmental pollution using respondents' evaluations, and empirically investigates the causal effect of environmental pollution on household medical cost and the mechanism. The conclusions are shown as follows. First, environmental pollution can increase household medical costs, and this estimation result still holds after dealing with the endogeneity problem and other robustness tests. Second, there is heterogeneity in the impact of environmental pollution on household medical costs, households in the upper socioeconomic class, with heavy pension burdens or with strong health insurance coverage are more sensitive to environmental pollution and incur relatively higher household medical costs. Third, environmental pollution reduces residents' satisfaction with their spiritual life, which adversely affects their physical and mental health and can increase household medical costs. Residents' satisfaction with their spiritual life is an important mechanism for environmental pollution to affect household health care expenditures. Therefore, governments should enhance the enforcement of environmental protection and governance, strengthen the awareness of green issues and health education, and increase the supply of facilities for leisure and sports, thus reducing medical costs due to environmental pollution and easing the medical burden of residents.

Environmental and second law analysis of a turbojet engine operating with different fuels

Fuels such as kerosene, diesel No. 2, and JP-4 are extensively utilized in aviation engines. This study conducts a comprehensive comparison of these fuels within the context of a turbojet engine modeled using GasTurb. While key operational parameters like Mach numbers and total pressure ratios are held constant, variations are introduced in the fuel-air equivalence ratio (ϕ) and the pressure ratio of the high-pressure compressor in the turbojet engine. The results of these analyses show that kerosene exhibits the most favorable operational range, resulting in the lowest production of nitrogen oxides (NO). Conversely, diesel fuel displays a broader operational range with higher NO production. Moreover, diesel fuel yields greater CO2-equivalent emissions during combustion due to elevated levels of both CO2 and NO emissions. On the other hand, kerosene consistently produces the lowest CO2-equivalent emissions across all scenarios. Despite kerosene exhibiting relatively lower exergy efficiency and the highest exergy destruction among the three fuels, it emerges with the lowest total and specific environmental pollution costs. By analyzing a range of parameters and incorporating environmental considerations, this study identifies kerosene as the optimal choice for minimizing emissions and mitigating the environmental impact in aviation applications.

Green Total Factor Efficiency in Vegetable Production: A Comprehensive Ecological Analysis of China’s Practices

This study undertakes a comprehensive analysis of vegetable production efficiency in China using input–output data from 30 provinces spanning 2011 to 2017. By incorporating environmental pollution costs as undesirable outputs alongside vegetable output value, we employ Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with the Banker, Charnes, and Cooper (BCC) model and the Malmquist index model. Our assessment reveals both annual and inter-period efficiency changes. The findings highlight a modest overall efficiency in China’s vegetable production and significant regional disparities. Technical progress emerges as a pivotal determinant of total factor productivity (TFP). Recognizing these dynamics, we propose policy recommendations that prioritize technical innovation, sustainable practices, rural infrastructure enhancement, and specialized cultivation methods. Implementing these recommendations could bolster China’s position in international trade negotiations due to increased exports and potentially drive broader environmental policy reforms. As vegetable production becomes more efficient and sustainable, there might be a shift in labor needs, potentially leading to migration patterns or changes in employment structures. These insights contribute to the sustainable development of China’s vegetable industry, offering a broader understanding of the dynamics of agricultural efficiency in the context of environmental sustainability.

Green GDP Calculation Methods and Practical Applications Based on an Environmental Perspective

In using the traditional GDP to measure the health of the country, the impact of ecological pressures is ignored. As the economy grows and the ecological environment deteriorates, it forces us to shift to green GDP to measure the health of the economy so that it can reflect sustainable growth in the economic environment. To address the many challenges of green growth and sustainable development, this paper evaluates the relationship between GDP and resources and the environment by using the development of a green GDP model. We have chosen an accounting model of (GGDP), using which we include the cost of environmental pollution, the cost of resource depletion, and the cost of environmental improvement. This model is then monetized and the final model obtained provides a new method for quantifying the cost of environmental and resource degradation, demonstrating that GGDP can be used as a primary measure of economic health and can measure the impact on climate mitigation.

Responsible Behavior of Irresponsible Companies: Air Pollution and Charitable Donations of Polluting Companies

AbstractThe relationship between air pollution and charitable donations of companies has received little attention from academia. To make up for this defect, we use a regression discontinuity design based on the spatial discontinuity in air pollution created by China's winter heating policy in the north of Qinling Mountains–Huai River line to examine whether severe air pollution may cause polluting companies to make charitable donations. Our results consistently show that air pollution has a positive impact on the donations of polluting companies, regardless of whether the absolute donations, the relative donations, or the willingness to donate are used to measure donations. A series of robustness tests confirm that this relationship is causal. Furthermore, we find that under severe air pollution, the motivations of polluting companies to implement donation behaviors are to decrease the probability of environmental penalties, reduce environmental pollution costs, and decrease the extent to which air pollution affects company reputations.

Development of a software tool for economic evaluation of health, safety, and environmental initiatives in a combined cycle power plant

Background: This study aimed to provide a comprehensive tool for the economic evaluation of investments in health, safety, and environment (HSE). Methods: This developmental cross-sectional study was conducted on the costs and benefits of HSE investments in a combined cycle power plant in Gilan province, 2021. The components of preventive measure costs (PMCs) and occupational accidents, diseases, and environmental pollution costs (ADPCs) were determined by an expert panel and review of scientific literature. The HSE economic assessment tool (HSE-EAT) was developed in Microsoft Excel software using macro/visual basic coding. The tool was designed to determine the efficient measures using the cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and the combination of control measures with the highest financial benefits using the cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA). Results: The application of the HSE-EAT in a combined cycle power plant showed the highest return on investment (ROI) for installation of drains for ducts of diesel fuel pipes and the lowest ROI value for renovation of emergency eyewash and shower. The ratio of indirect to direct benefits of implementing the preventive measures in the worst-case and best-case scenarios were 3.0 and 1.3, respectively. Conclusion: The HSE-EAT exhibited the advantages of comprehensiveness, flexibility, being user-friendly, and faster and more accurate calculations and could be also used for economic evaluation of health, safety and environmental initiatives in other industries and organizations.

WITHDRAWN: Short term optimal scheduling of a virtual power plants integrated with electrothermal hybrid energy storage system using an effective adaptive multi-objective differential evolution algorithm

virtual power plants (VPPs) in the power distribution grid play an important role in balancing the power and heat generation and consumption in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. This study proposes VPPs for risk-averse energy exchange of resources and customers in the presence of the hybrid storage system. An appropriate energy management program is presented to make a balance between generators and consumers in VPPs considering generation uncertainties including electricity demand and price forecasting in the electricity market and renewable energy uncertainties. Hence, monetary exchange methods such as day-ahead agreements are proposed for energy exchange among VPPs. The expanded exchange structure of the suggested framework simplifies the renewable energy's sources to the electricity market despite its small-scale and non-dispatchable features. Also, a novel model is presented for short-term programing of virtual power plant considering technical and economic uncertainties. Given that VPPs can enter the electricity market based on time-of-use (TOU) pricing strategy and participation in demand response (DR) program, minimizing the expected cost of energy generation and environmental pollution is considered as the objective function. A multi-objective efficient model of energy management employing the machine speed scaling mechanism is suggested. An effective adaptive multi-objective differential evolution (AMODE) algorithm is presented to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. AMODE usages a novel Fitness Evaluation Mechanism (FEM) using dynamic reference point and fuzzy association randomness study to evaluate solutions in the evolutionary population by implementing the conditional value at risk (CVaR) method for risk management. The simulation studies and sensitivity analysis results are evaluated to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed model on a VPP in the island and grid-connected modes with and without participation in DR program. Finally, the conceptual results are discussed.

How to optimize allocation of renewable portfolio standards for renewable energy development in China?

A renewable portfolio standard is implemented to promote the development of renewable energy at a minimum cost through tradable green certificate market mechanism. Formulating a scientific and feasible renewable energy quota allocation scheme helps RPS function smoothly and optimize resource allocation. This paper proposed a bi-level programming model combined with entropy weight method to allocate renewable portfolio standard quotas with provincial heterogeneity and stakeholders' behavior, and an optimized quota allocation scheme among China's 30 provinces in 2020 was obtained. By comparing with the government's issued scheme, the following were the results under the optimized scheme: (1) Quotas in most provinces have increased, and the responsibility for renewable electricity generation is shared with the provinces with developed economy and well-constructed transmission facilities, where electricity producers can meet the quotas by purchasing tradable green certificate. (2) Quota allocation has positive effects on energy, economy, and environment. Specifically, the non-hydro renewable electricity generation increased by 43.8%, the non-hydro renewable electricity producers' profit increased by 18.4%, and the environmental pollution cost reduced by 27.9%. (3) Quota allocation equity measured by the environmental Gini coefficient increased by 14.3%. Based on these findings, some policy implications related to quota allocation and renewable portfolio standard's institutional arrangement have been put forward.

Research on the Impact of the “Coal to Gas” and “Coal to Electricity” Policies on Urban Air Quality

Heating in winter in the north has a significant negative impact on the quality of the atmospheric environment. The coal used for heating emits substances such as PM2.5, PM10, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, etc., exacerbating atmospheric environmental pollution. Air pollution seriously affects the physical health and safety of residents, reduces their sense of happiness, brings about significant environmental pollution costs, and increases the actual level of economic inequality. In response to this situation, this article aims to improve urban air quality through the policies of “coal to gas” and “coal to electricity”, and further studies the impact of this policy. To provide empirical evidence and decision-making reference for deepening the “coal to gas, electricity” policy, and to reduce atmospheric environmental pollution, it is necessary to actively adjust the heating plan, increase the central heating area, and construct different heating scales according to different needs. It is necessary to vigorously develop clean coal technology, reduce pollutant emissions, actively explore clean energy, and fundamentally change the problem of air pollution. Therefore, the policies of “coal to gas” and “coal to electricity” can effectively improve the pollution of coal on urban air quality.

Thermodynamic, sustainability, environmental and damage cost analyses of jet fuel starter gas turbine engine

Jet Fuel Starter Gas Turbine Engine (JFS-GTE) used on a military aircraft is explored for on design mode and off design mode configurations at rated capacity cycles employing thermodynamic, environmental, sustainability, emission impact, and environment pollution cost analyzing. The engine generates 157.94 kW-shaft power at on design case whilst it produces 187.05 kW-shaft power at off design case. In this situation, the energy efficiency of JFS-GTE is accounted for 15.81% in an on design case and 17.01% in an off design case while the exergetic efficiency of JFS-GTE is estimated to be 14.89% in on design case and 16.02% at off design case. Using the environmental analyzing method, the enviro-effect factor and ecology-effect factor of JFS-GTE are found as 5.716 and 6.716 at on design case and 5.241 and 6.241 at off design case. Then, exergetic sustainability index and sustainable efficiency factor of JFS-GTE are computed as 0.175 and 1.175 at on design mode and 0.191 and 1.191 at off design mode. Afterward, the specific emission impact (sei) is computed as 6.555 mPts/GJ at on design and 5.621 mPts/GJ at off design mode. Finally, the specific environmental damage cost is determined to be 0.045 $/GJ at on design and 0.041 $/GJ at off design. These results show that JFS-GTE operates more energy and exergy efficiency, is more sustainable engine, has a low environmental impact and less environmental damage cost formation at off design case.

A Study on Inter-Provincial Environmental Pollution Movement in China Based on the Input–Output Method

In China, environmental pollution responsibilities are divided according to administrative regions. However, because of the strong externality of environmental pollution, the movement of environmental pollution undoubtedly increases the complexity of pollution governance. To divide the responsibility of environmental pollution governance in each province, we effectively quantify the unequal relationship between environmental pollution costs and economic benefits in each province to understand the mechanism and characteristics of inter-provincial environmental pollution movement. Based on the regional input–output model and an inventory we compiled of sulfur dioxide(SO2) emissions of air pollutants in 2012, we calculate the implied inter-provincial environmental pollution emissions and economic benefits from trade, based on production and consumption (supply-side and demand-side). In addition, the movement relationship is explored, and the cost and economic value-added indexes of air pollution control are further constructed to provide effective evidence for a reasonable division of responsibility for environmental pollution control. The results show that there are obvious environmental inequities in the regional trade process in each province, indicating that environmental pollution has been moved. Developed provinces have more economic benefits but pay less in the process of trading goods with less-developed provinces due to the advantages of their industrial structure, while the opposite is true for less-developed provinces. Finally, we propose corresponding policy recommendations to change this condition.

Cost Accounting Algorithm of Environmental Pollution Control Based on Discrete Probability

Aiming at the problems of high error rate and long time of traditional environmental pollution control cost accounting algorithm, a cost accounting algorithm of environmental pollution control based on discrete probability was designed. Firstly, the cost of environmental pollution is classified and the monetization function of environmental pollution cost is constructed. Then, the cost accounting index system of environmental pollution control is established, and the cost function of environmental pollution control is constructed. Finally, a discrete probability model is used to optimize the cost function, and the optimized cost function is used to design the environmental pollution control cost accounting algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can quickly converge to the optimum within 70 iterations, the accounting error rate is between -0.2% and 1.3%, and the accounting time is always less than 0.4 s. It has good convergence and can accurately calculate the cost of ecological environmental pollution control.

Analysis on the Coupling Relationship between Natural Resource Loss and Environmental Pollution Cost Accounting in Chongqing

Natural resource loss and environmental pollution are the focus of attention at present. Based on the analysis of the coupling relationship between natural resource loss and environmental pollution cost accounting in Chongqing, this paper makes a comprehensive analysis of the accounting results. First of all, we should define the loss of natural resources and set the direction of research and development, establish the ecosystem data model, calculate the environmental pollution cost, and display the calculation results. The results show that (1) air pollution is the focus of environmental pollution. On the premise of ensuring production quality, control the number of emissions from production and reprocess the emissions. (2) In the process of paying attention to water and soil resources, detect and protect water resources and soil, and calculate the ecological value of water resources and soil. Pay attention to the benefits between water and soil and transform and optimize the ecological value system of natural resources.
