Enhancing CMB map reconstruction and power spectrum estimation with convolutional neural networks

The accurate reconstruction of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) maps and the measurement of its power spectrum are crucial for studying the early universe. In this paper, we implement a convolutional neural network to apply the Wiener Filter to CMB temperature maps, and use it intensively to compute an optimal quadratic estimation of the power spectrum. Our neural network has a UNet architecture as that implemented in WienerNet, but with novel aspects such as being written in python 3 and TensorFlow 2. It also includes an extra channel for the noise variance map, to account for inhomogeneous noise, and a channel for the mask. The network is very efficient, overcoming the bottleneck that is typically found in standard methods to compute the Wiener Filter, such as those that apply the conjugate gradient. It scales efficiently with the size of the map, making it a useful tool to include in CMB data analysis. The accuracy of the Wiener Filter reconstruction is satisfactory, as compared with the standard method. We heavily use this approach to efficiently estimate the power spectrum, by performing a simulation-based analysis of the optimal quadratic estimator. We further evaluate the quality of the reconstructed maps in terms of the power spectrum and find that we can properly recover the statistical properties of the signal. We find that the proposed architecture can account for inhomogeneous noise efficiently. Furthermore, increasing the complexity of the variance map presents a more significant challenge for the convergence of the network than the noise level does.

Subtracting the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect from the cosmic microwave background with surveys of large-scale structure

The kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) effect will be an important source of cosmological and astrophysical information in upcoming surveys of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). However, the kSZ effect will also act as the dominant source of noise for several other measurements that use small angular scales in CMB temperature maps, since its blackbody nature implies that standard component separation techniques cannot be used to remove it from observed maps. In this paper, we explore the idea of ``de-kSZing'': constructing a template for the late-time kSZ effect using external surveys of large-scale structure, and then subtracting this template from CMB temperature maps in order to remove some portion of the kSZ signal. After building intuition for general aspects of the de-kSZing procedure, we perform forecasts for the de-kSZing efficiency of several large-scale structure surveys, including BOSS, DESI, Roman, MegaMapper, and PUMA. We also highlight potential applications of de-kSZing to cosmological constraints from the CMB temperature power spectrum, CMB lensing reconstruction, and the moving-lens effect. While our forecasts predict achievable de-kSZing efficiencies of 10%--20% at best, these results are specific to the de-kSZing formalism adopted in this work, and we expect that higher efficiencies are possible using improved versions of this formalism.

Cross-correlation between Planck CMB lensing potential and galaxy catalogues from HELP

ABSTRACT We present the study of cross-correlation between Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) gravitational lensing potential map released by the Planck collaboration and photometric redshift galaxy catalogues from the Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP), divided into four sky patches: NGP, Herschel Stripe-82, and two halves of SGP field, covering in total ∼660 deg2 of the sky. We estimate the galaxy linear bias parameter, b0, from joint analysis of cross-power spectrum and galaxy autopower spectrum using Maximum Likelihood Estimation technique to obtain values ranging from 0.70 ± 0.01 for SGP Part-2 to 1.02 ± 0.02 for SGP Part-1 field. We also estimate the amplitude of cross-correlation and find the values spanning from 0.67 ± 0.18 for SGP Part-2 to 0.80 ± 0.23 for SGP Part-1 field, respectively. For NGP and SGP Part-1 fields, the amplitude is consistent with the expected value for the standard cosmological model within $\sim 1\, \sigma$, while for Herschel Stripe-82 and SGP Part-2, we find the amplitude to be smaller than expected with $\sim 1.5\, \sigma$ and $\sim 2\, \sigma$ deviation, respectively. We perform several tests on various systematic errors to study the reason for the deviation, however, value of the amplitude turns out to be robust with respect to these errors. The only significant change in the amplitude is observed when we replace the minimum-variance CMB lensing map, used in the baseline analysis, by the lensing map derived from the CMB temperature map with deprojected thermal Sunyaev–Zeldovich signal.

Mitigating foreground bias to the CMB lensing power spectrum for a CMB-HD survey

The authors develop a strategy to mitigate two major observational foreground biases introduced in Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing studies. Using realistic simulations that include extragalactic foregrounds, they show how both the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect and the Cosmic Infrared Background can be accounted for, leading to decontaminated CMB temperature maps, which are critical for ensuring future survey effectiveness in establishing the CMB auto spectrum on small scales ($\ensuremath{\le}10k\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}p\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}c$).

Cosmic birefrigence: cross-spectra and cross-bispectra with CMB anisotropies

Parity-violating extensions of Maxwell electromagnetism induce a rotation of the linear polarization plane of photons during propagation. This effect, known as cosmic birefringence, impacts on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations producing a mixing of E and B polarization modes which is otherwise null in the standard scenario. Such an effect is naturally parametrized by a rotation angle which can be written as the sum of an isotropic component α 0 and an anisotropic one δα(n̂). In this paper we compute angular power spectra and bispectra involving δα and the CMB temperature and polarization maps. In particular, contrarily to what happens for the cross-spectra, we show that even in absence of primordial cross-correlations between the anisotropic birefringence angle and the CMB maps, there exist non-vanishing three-point correlation functions carrying signatures of parity-breaking physics. Furthermore, we find that such angular bispectra still survive in a regime of purely anisotropic cosmic birefringence, which corresponds to the conservative case of having α o = 0. These bispectra represent an additional observable aimed at studying cosmic birefringence and its parity-violating nature beyond power spectrum analyses. They provide also a way to perform consistency checks for specific models of cosmic birefringence. Moreover, we estimate that among all the possible birefringent bispectra,〈δαTB〉and〈δαEB〉are the ones which contain the largest signal-to-noise ratio. Once the cosmic birefringence signal is taken to be at the level of current constraints, we show that these bispectra are within reach of future CMB experiments, as LiteBIRD.

Investigating non-Gaussianity in Cosmic Microwave Background temperature maps using spherical harmonic phases

In the era of precision cosmology, accurate estimation of cosmological parameters is based upon the implicit assumption of the Gaussian nature of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. Therefore, an important scientific question to ask is whether the observed CMB map is consistent with Gaussian prediction. In this work, we extend previous studies based on CMB spherical harmonic phases (SHP) to examine the validity of the hypothesis that the temperature field of the CMB is consistent with a Gaussian random field (GRF). The null hypothesis is that the corresponding CMB SHP are independent and identically distributed in terms of a uniform distribution in the interval [0, 2π] [1,2]. We devise a new model-independent method where we use ordered and non-parametric Rao's statistic, based on sample arc-lengths to comprehensively test uniformity and independence of SHP for a given ℓ mode and independence of nearby ℓ mode SHP. We performed our analysis on the scales limited by spherical harmonic modes ≤ 128, to restrict ourselves to signal-dominated regions. To find the non-uniform or dependent sets of SHP, we calculate the statistic for the data and 10000 Monte Carlo simulated uniformly random sets of SHP and use 0.05 and 0.001 α levels to distinguish between statistically significant and highly significant detections. We first establish the performance of our method using simulated Gaussian, non-Gaussian CMB temperature maps, along with observed non-Gaussian 100 and 143 GHz Planck channel maps. We find that our method, performs efficiently and accurately in detecting phase correlations generated in all of the non-Gaussian simulations and observed foreground contaminated 100 and 143 GHz Planck channel temperature maps. We apply our method on Planck satellite mission's final released CMB temperature anisotropy maps- COMMANDER, SMICA, NILC, and SEVEM along with WMAP 9 year released ILC map. We report that SHP corresponding to some of the m-modes are non-uniform, some of the ℓ mode SHP and neighboring mode pair SHP are correlated in cleaned CMB maps. The detection of non-uniformity or correlation in the SHP indicates the presence of non-Gaussian signals in the foreground minimized CMB maps.

The DES view of the Eridanus supervoid and the CMB cold spot

ABSTRACT The Cold Spot is a puzzling large-scale feature in the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature maps and its origin has been subject to active debate. As an important foreground structure at low redshift, the Eridanus supervoid was recently detected, but it was subsequently determined that, assuming the standard ΛCDM model, only about 10–20 per cent of the observed temperature depression can be accounted for via its Integrated Sachs–Wolfe imprint. However, R ≳ 100 h−1Mpc supervoids elsewhere in the sky have shown ISW imprints AISW ≈ 5.2 ± 1.6 times stronger than expected from ΛCDM (AISW = 1), which warrants further inspection. Using the Year-3 redMaGiC catalogue of luminous red galaxies from the Dark Energy Survey, here we confirm the detection of the Eridanus supervoid as a significant underdensity in the Cold Spot’s direction at z < 0.2. We also show, with S/N ≳ 5 significance, that the Eridanus supervoid appears as the most prominent large-scale underdensity in the dark matter mass maps that we reconstructed from DES Year-3 gravitational lensing data. While we report no significant anomalies, an interesting aspect is that the amplitude of the lensing signal from the Eridanus supervoid at the Cold Spot centre is about 30 per cent lower than expected from similar peaks found in N-body simulations based on the standard ΛCDM model with parameters Ωm = 0.279 and σ8 = 0.82. Overall, our results confirm the causal relation between these individually rare structures in the cosmic web and in the CMB, motivating more detailed future surveys in the Cold Spot region.

Lensing contribution to the 21 cm intensity bispectrum

Intensity maps of the 21 cm emission line of neutral hydrogen are lensed by intervening large-scale structure, similar to the lensing of the cosmic microwave background temperature map. We extend previous work by calculating the lensing contribution to the full-sky 21 cm bispectrum in redshift space. The lensing contribution tends to peak when equal-redshift fluctuations are lensed by a lower redshift fluctuation. At high redshift, lensing effects can become comparable to the contributions from density and redshift-space distortions.

Parity in Planck full-mission CMB temperature maps

In the standard model of cosmology, Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) sky is expected to preserve spatial symmetries. Following our previous studies, we search for evidence of a parity preference in the latest full-mission CMB temperature maps from ESA’s Planck probe. Specifically, we probe (a)symmetry in power between even and odd multipoles of CMB, that corresponds to a particular parity preference under inversion, in Planck 2015 angular power spectrum measurements. We also assess any specific preference for mirror parity (a)symmetry, by analysing the power contained in l+m=even or odd mode combinations.

Cross-correlating Planck with VST ATLAS LRGs: a new test for the ISW effect in the Southern hemisphere

ABSTRACT The integrated Sachs–Wolfe (ISW) effect probes the late-time expansion history of the Universe, offering direct constraints on dark energy. Here, we present our measurements of the ISW signal at redshifts of $\bar{z}=0.35$, 0.55, and 0.68, using the cross-correlation of the Planck cosmic microwave background temperature map with ∼0.5 million luminous red galaxies (LRGs) selected from the VST ATLAS survey. We then combine these with previous measurements based on WMAP and similar SDSS LRG samples, providing a total sample of ∼2.1 million LRGs covering ∼12 000 deg2 of sky. At $\bar{z}=0.35$ and $\bar{z}=0.55$, we detect the ISW signal at 1.2σ and 2.3σ (or 2.6σ combined), in agreement with the predictions of lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM). We verify these results by repeating the measurements using the BOSS LOWZ and CMASS, spectroscopically confirmed LRG samples. We also detect the ISW effect in three magnitude limited ATLAS + SDSS galaxy samples extending to z ≈ 0.4 at ∼2σ per sample. However, we do not detect the ISW signal at $\bar{z}=0.68$ when combining the ATLAS and SDSS results. Further tests using spectroscopically confirmed eBOSS LRGs at this redshift remain inconclusive due to the current low sky coverage of the survey. If the ISW signal is shown to be redshift dependent in a manner inconsistent with the predictions of ΛCDM, it could open the door to alternative theories such as modified gravity. It is therefore important to repeat the high-redshift ISW measurement using the completed eBOSS sample, as well as deeper upcoming surveys such as DESI and LSST.

Cross-correlation of CMB Polarization Lensing with High-z Submillimeter Herschel-ATLAS Galaxies

Abstract We report a 4.8σ measurement of the cross-correlation signal between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing convergence reconstructed from measurements of the CMB polarization made by the Polarbear experiment and the infrared-selected galaxies of the Herschel-ATLAS survey. This is the first measurement of its kind. We infer a best-fit galaxy bias of , corresponding to a host halo mass of at an effective redshift of z ∼ 2 from the cross-correlation power spectrum. Residual uncertainties in the redshift distribution of the submillimeter galaxies are subdominant with respect to the statistical precision. We perform a suite of systematic tests, finding that instrumental and astrophysical contaminations are small compared to the statistical error. This cross-correlation measurement only relies on CMB polarization information that, differently from CMB temperature maps, is less contaminated by galactic and extragalactic foregrounds, providing a clearer view of the projected matter distribution. This result demonstrates the feasibility and robustness of this approach for future high-sensitivity CMB polarization experiments.

A convolutional neural network for cosmic string detection in CMB temperature maps

We present in detail the convolutional neural network used in our previous work to detect cosmic strings in cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropy maps. By training this neural network on numerically generated CMB temperature maps, with and without cosmic strings, the network can produce prediction maps that locate the position of the cosmic strings and provide a probabilistic estimate of the value of the string tension $G\mu$. Supplying noiseless simulations of CMB maps with arcmin resolution to the network resulted in the accurate determination both of string locations and string tension for sky maps having strings with string tension as low as $G\mu=5\times10^{-9}$. The code is publicly available online. Though we trained the network with a long straight string toy model, we show the network performs well with realistic Nambu-Goto simulations.

Mitigating foreground biases in CMB lensing reconstruction using cleaned gradients

Reconstructed maps of the lensing convergence of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) will play a major role in precision cosmology in coming years. CMB lensing maps will enable calibration of the masses of high-redshift galaxy clusters and will yield precise measurements of the growth of cosmic structure through cross-correlations with galaxy surveys. During the next decade, CMB lensing reconstruction will rely heavily on temperature data, rather than polarization, thus necessitating a detailed understanding of biases due to extragalactic foregrounds. In the near term, the most significant bias among these is that due to the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect. Moreover, high-resolution observations will be available at only a few frequencies, making full foreground cleaning challenging. In this paper, we demonstrate a solution to the foreground bias problem that involves cleaning only the large-scale gradients of the CMB temperature map. We show that the data necessary for tSZ-bias-free CMB lensing maps already exist in the form of large-scale measurements of the CMB across multiple frequencies by the Planck and WMAP satellite experiments. Specifically, we show that the bias to halo masses inferred from CMB lensing is eliminated by the utilization of clean gradients obtained from multi-frequency component separation involving Planck and WMAP data, and that special lensing maps for galaxy cross-correlations can be prepared with only a small penalty in signal-to-noise while requiring no masking, in-painting, modeling, or simulation effort for the tSZ bias. While we focus on cross-correlations, we also show that gradient cleaning can mitigate biases to the CMB lensing autospectrum that arise from the presence of foregrounds in temperature and polarization with minimal loss of signal-to-noise.

Inflationary study of non-Gaussianity using two-dimensional geometrical measures of CMB temperature maps

In this work we effectively calculated the two-dimensional Minkowski functionals for cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps generated by single field models of inflation with a standard kinetic term. We started with calculation of the bispectrum of initial perturbations and then calculated the two-dimensional configuration space cubic moments for temperature fluctuations. These cubic moments give rise to first order non-Gaussian correction terms to the Minkowski functionals. Thus, we developed a robust mechanism to predict the amount of non-Gaussianity generated by inflation in the CMB temperature maps using Minkowski functionals.

Extracting foreground-obscured μ-distortion anisotropies to constrain primordial non-Gaussianity

Correlations between cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature, polarization and spectral distortion anisotropies can be used as a probe of primordial non-Gaussianity. Here, we perform a reconstruction of $\mu$-distortion anisotropies in the presence of Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds, applying the so-called Constrained ILC component separation method to simulations of proposed CMB space missions (PIXIE, LiteBIRD, CORE, PICO). Our sky simulations include Galactic dust, Galactic synchrotron, Galactic free-free, thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, as well as primary CMB temperature and $\mu$-distortion anisotropies, the latter being added as correlated field. The Constrained ILC method allows us to null the CMB temperature anisotropies in the reconstructed $\mu$-map (and vice versa), in addition to mitigating the contaminations from astrophysical foregrounds and instrumental noise. We compute the cross-power spectrum between the reconstructed (CMB-free) $\mu$-distortion map and the ($\mu$-free) CMB temperature map, after foreground removal and component separation. Since the cross-power spectrum is proportional to the primordial non-Gaussianity parameter, $f_{\rm NL}$, on scales $k\simeq 740$ Mpc$^{-1}$, this allows us to derive $f_{\rm NL}$-detection limits for the aforementioned future CMB experiments. Our analysis shows that foregrounds degrade the theoretical detection limits (based mostly on instrumental noise) by more than one order of magnitude, with PICO standing the best chance at placing upper limits on scale-dependent non-Gaussianity. We also discuss the dependence of the constraints on the channel sensitivities and chosen bands. Like for $B$-mode polarization measurements, extended coverage at frequencies $\nu\lesssim 40\,{\rm GHz}$ and $\nu\gtrsim 400\,{\rm GHz}$ provides more leverage than increased channel sensitivity.

Galileon gravity in light of ISW, CMB, BAO and H0 data

Cosmological models with Galileon gravity are an alternative to the standard ΛCDM paradigm with testable predictions at the level of its self-accelerating solutions for the expansion history, as well as large-scale structure formation. Here, we place constraints on the full parameter space of these models using data from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) (including lensing), baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) and the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect. We pay special attention to the ISW effect for which we use the cross-spectra, CℓTg, of CMB temperature maps and foreground galaxies from the WISE survey. The sign of CℓTg is set by the time evolution of the lensing potential in the redshift range of the galaxy sample: it is positive if the potential decays (like in ΛCDM), negative if it deepens. We constrain three subsets of Galileon gravity separately known as the Cubic, Quartic and Quintic Galileons. The cubic Galileon model predicts a negative CℓTg and exhibits a 7.8σ tension with the data, which effectively rules it out. For the quartic and quintic models the ISW data also rule out a significant portion of the parameter space but permit regions where the goodness-of-fit is comparable to ΛCDM. The data prefers a non zero sum of the neutrino masses (∑mν ≈ 0.5eV) with ∼ 5σ significance in these models. The best-fitting models have values of H0 consistent with local determinations, thereby avoiding the tension that exists in ΛCDM. We also identify and discuss a ∼ 2σ tension that Galileon gravity exhibits with recent BAO measurements. Our analysis shows overall that Galileon cosmologies cannot be ruled out by current data but future lensing, BAO and ISW data hold strong potential to do so.

A Bayesian framework for cosmic string searches in CMB maps

There exists various proposals to detect cosmic strings from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) or 21 cm temperature maps. Current proposals do not aim to find the location of strings on sky maps, all of these approaches can be thought of as a statistic on a sky map. We propose a Bayesian interpretation of cosmic string detection and within that framework, we derive a connection between estimates of cosmic string locations and cosmic string tension Gμ. We use this Bayesian framework to develop a machine learning framework for detecting strings from sky maps and outline how to implement this framework with neural networks. The neural network we trained was able to detect and locate cosmic strings on noiseless CMB temperature map down to a string tension of Gμ=5 ×10−9 and when analyzing a CMB temperature map that does not contain strings, the neural network gives a 0.95 probability that Gμ⩽2.3×10−9.

Kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect with projected fields. II. Prospects, challenges, and comparison with simulations

The kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) signal is a powerful probe of the cosmic baryon distribution. The kSZ signal is proportional to the integrated free electron momentum rather than the electron pressure (which sources the thermal SZ signal). Since velocities should be unbiased on large scales, the kSZ signal is an unbiased tracer of the large-scale electron distribution, and thus can be used to detect the "missing baryon" that evade most observational techniques. While most current methods for kSZ extraction rely on the availability of very accurate redshifts, we revisit a method that allows measurements even in the absence of redshift information for individual objects. It involves cross-correlating the square of an appropriately filtered cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature map with a projected density map constructed from a sample of large-scale structure tracers. We show that this method will achieve high signal-to-noise when applied to the next generation of high-resolution CMB experiments, provided that component separation is sufficiently effective at removing foreground contamination. Considering statistical errors only, we forecast that this estimator can yield $S/N \approx $ 3, 120 and over 150 for Planck, Advanced ACTPol, and hypothetical Stage-IV CMB experiments, respectively, in combination with a galaxy catalog from WISE, and about 20% larger $S/N$ for a galaxy catalog from the proposed SPHEREx experiment. This work serves as a companion paper to the first kSZ measurement with this method, where we used CMB temperature maps constructed from Planck and WMAP data, together with galaxies from the WISE survey, to obtain a 3.8 - 4.5$\sigma$ detection of the kSZ$^2$ amplitude.

Demonstration of Cosmic Microwave Background Delensing Using the Cosmic Infrared Background.

Delensing is an increasingly important technique to reverse the gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and thus reveal primordial signals the lensing may obscure. We present a first demonstration of delensing on Planck temperature maps using the cosmic infrared background (CIB). Reversing the lensing deflections in Planck CMB temperature maps using a linear combination of the 545 and 857GHz maps as a lensing tracer, we find that the lensing effects in the temperature power spectrum are reduced in a manner consistent with theoretical expectations. In particular, the characteristic sharpening of the acoustic peaks of the temperature power spectrum resulting from successful delensing is detected at a significance of 16σ, with an amplitude of A_{delens}=1.12±0.07 relative to the expected value of unity. This first demonstration on data of CIB delensing, and of delensing techniques in general, is significant because lensing removal will soon be essential for achieving high-precision constraints on inflationary B-mode polarization.

A BAYESIAN ESTIMATE OF THE CMB–LARGE-SCALE STRUCTURE CROSS-CORRELATION

ABSTRACT Evidences for late-time acceleration of the universe are provided by multiple probes, such as Type Ia supernovae, the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and large-scale structure (LSS). In this work, we focus on the integrated Sachs–Wolfe (ISW) effect, i.e., secondary CMB fluctuations generated by evolving gravitational potentials due to the transition between, e.g., the matter and dark energy (DE) dominated phases. Therefore, assuming a flat universe, DE properties can be inferred from ISW detections. We present a Bayesian approach to compute the CMB–LSS cross-correlation signal. The method is based on the estimate of the likelihood for measuring a combined set consisting of a CMB temperature and galaxy contrast maps, provided that we have some information on the statistical properties of the fluctuations affecting these maps. The likelihood is estimated by a sampling algorithm, therefore avoiding the computationally demanding techniques of direct evaluation in either pixel or harmonic space. As local tracers of the matter distribution at large scales, we used the Two Micron All Sky Survey galaxy catalog and, for the CMB temperature fluctuations, the ninth-year data release of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP9). The results show a dominance of cosmic variance over the weak recovered signal, due mainly to the shallowness of the catalog used, with systematics associated with the sampling algorithm playing a secondary role as sources of uncertainty. When combined with other complementary probes, the method presented in this paper is expected to be a useful tool to late-time acceleration studies in cosmology.
