High-accuracy emulators for observables in ΛCDM, Neff, Σmν, and w cosmologies

Abstract We use the emulation framework CosmoPower to construct and publicly release neural network emulators of cosmological observables, including the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarization power spectra, matter power spectrum, distance-redshift relation, baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and redshift-space distortion (RSD) observables, and derived parameters. We train our emulators on Einstein-Boltzmann calculations obtained with high-precision numerical convergence settings, for a wide range of cosmological models including ΛCDM, wCDM, ΛCDM+Neff, and ΛCDM+Σmν. Our CMB emulators are accurate to better than 0.5% out to ℓ = 104 which is sufficient for Stage-IV data analysis, and our P(k) emulators reach the same accuracy level out to k = 50 Mpc−1, which is sufficient for Stage-III data analysis. We release the emulators via an online repository (CosmoPower Organisation), which will be continually updated with additional extended cosmological models. Our emulators accelerate cosmological data analysis by orders of magnitude, enabling cosmological parameter extraction analyses, using current survey data, to be performed on a laptop. We validate our emulators by comparing them to class and camb and by reproducing cosmological parameter constraints derived from Planck TT, TE, EE, and CMB lensing data, as well as from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Data Release 4 CMB data, Dark Energy Survey Year-1 galaxy lensing and clustering data, and Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 12 BAO and RSD data.

A Minkowski functional analysis of the Cosmic Microwave Background weak lensing convergence

Minkowski functionals are summary statistics that capture the geometric and morphological properties of fields. They are sensitive to all higher order correlations of the fields and can be used to complement more conventional statistics, such as the power spectrum of the field. We develop a Minkowski functional-based approach for a full likelihood analysis of mildly non-Gaussian sky maps with partial sky coverage. Applying this to the inference of cosmological parameters from the Planck mission's map of the Cosmic Microwave Background's lensing convergence, we find an excellent agreement with results from the power spectrum-based lensing likelihood. While the non-Gaussianity of current CMB lensing maps is dominated by reconstruction noise, a Minkowski functional-based analysis may be able to extract cosmological information from the non-Gaussianity of future lensing maps and thus go beyond what is accessible with a power spectrum-based analysis. The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Cosmology from Cross-correlations of unWISE Galaxies and ACT DR6 CMB Lensing

We present tomographic measurements of structure growth using cross-correlations of Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) DR6 and Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing maps with the unWISE Blue and Green galaxy samples, which span the redshift ranges 0.2 ≲ z ≲ 1.1 and 0.3 ≲ z ≲ 1.8, respectively. We improve on prior unWISE cross-correlations not just by making use of the new, high-precision ACT DR6 lensing maps, but also by including additional spectroscopic data for redshift calibration and by analyzing our measurements with a more flexible theoretical model. We determine the amplitude of matter fluctuations at low redshifts (z ≃ 0.2–1.6), finding S8≡σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5=0.813±0.021 using the ACT cross-correlation alone and S 8 = 0.810 ± 0.015 with a combination of Planck and ACT cross-correlations; these measurements are fully consistent with the predictions from primary CMB measurements assuming standard structure growth. The addition of baryon acoustic oscillation data breaks the degeneracy between σ 8 and Ω m , allowing us to measure σ 8 = 0.813 ± 0.020 from the cross-correlation of unWISE with ACT and σ 8 = 0.813 ± 0.015 from the combination of cross-correlations with ACT and Planck. These results also agree with the expectations from primary CMB extrapolations in ΛCDM cosmology; the consistency of σ 8 derived from our two redshift samples at z ∼ 0.6 and 1.1 provides a further check of our cosmological model. Our results suggest that structure formation on linear scales is well described by ΛCDM even down to low redshifts z ≲ 1.

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Mitigating the Impact of Extragalactic Foregrounds for the DR6 Cosmic Microwave Background Lensing Analysis

We investigate the impact and mitigation of extragalactic foregrounds for the cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing power spectrum analysis of Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) data release 6 (DR6) data. Two independent microwave sky simulations are used to test a range of mitigation strategies. We demonstrate that finding and then subtracting point sources, finding and then subtracting models of clusters, and using a profile bias-hardened lensing estimator together reduce the fractional biases to well below statistical uncertainties, with the inferred lensing amplitude, A lens, biased by less than 0.2σ. We also show that another method where a model for the cosmic infrared background (CIB) contribution is deprojected and high-frequency data from Planck is included has similar performance. Other frequency-cleaned options do not perform as well, either incurring a large noise cost or resulting in biased recovery of the lensing spectrum. In addition to these simulation-based tests, we also present null tests on the ACT DR6 data for sensitivity of our lensing spectrum estimation to differences in foreground levels between the two ACT frequencies used, while nulling the CMB lensing signal. These tests pass whether the nulling is performed at the map or bandpower level. The CIB-deprojected measurement performed on the DR6 data is consistent with our baseline measurement, implying that contamination from the CIB is unlikely to significantly bias the DR6 lensing spectrum. This collection of tests gives confidence that the ACT DR6 lensing measurements and cosmological constraints presented in companion papers to this work are robust to extragalactic foregrounds.

Agora: Multicomponent simulation for cross-survey science

ABSTRACT Next-generation cosmological surveys will observe large portions of the sky, with significant overlap between them. Multi-wavelength observations will enable us to analyse the same large-scale structure from different angles using a variety of tracers and astrophysical effects. The complex interplay between these observables calls for a model that can accurately and coherently describe their collective behaviour, posing a challenge that can only be met through the use of simulations. In this work, a suite of simulated extragalactic skies is presented, including maps and/or catalogues of cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing, thermal and kinetic Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (tSZ/kSZ) effects, cosmic infrared background (CIB), radio sources, galaxy overdensity and galaxy weak lensing. Each of these probes is implemented in the lightcone using halo catalogues and/or particles from the Multidark-Planck2 ($\small {MDPL2}$) N-body simulation, and the modelling is calibrated using hydrodynamic simulations and publicly available data. The auto and cross-spectra of the individual probes, as well as the cross-spectra between the observables, are shown to be consistent with theoretical models and measurements from data. The simulation is shown to have a wide range of applications, including forecasting, pipeline testing, and evaluating astrophysical biases in cross-correlation measurements. It is further demonstrated that the simulation products produced in this work have sufficient accuracy to recover the input cosmology when subjected to a full cosmological analysis and are ready for application in real-world analyses for ongoing and future surveys. Constraining f(R) gravity with cross-correlation of galaxies and cosmic microwave background lensing

We look for signatures of the Hu-Sawicki modified gravity theory proposed to explain the observed accelerated expansion of the Universe in observations of the galaxy distribution, the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and gravitational lensing of the CMB. We study constraints obtained using observations of only the CMB primary anisotropies before adding the galaxy power spectrum and its cross-correlation with CMB lensing. We show that cross-correlation of the galaxy distribution with lensing measurements is crucial in order to break parameter degeneracies, placing tighter constraints on the model. In particular, we set a strong upper limit on $ at $95<!PCT!>$ confidence level. This means that while the model may explain the accelerated expansion, its impact on large-scale structure closely resembles general relativity (GR). This analysis is the first to make use of the galaxy clustering, CMB lensing, and their cross-correlation power spectra to constrain Hu-Sawicki gravity. Restricting the analysis to the linear regime, we place a robust constraint that is competitive with other cosmological studies whilst using fewer probes. This study can be seen as a precursor to cross-correlation analyses of gravity and can be repeated with next-stage surveys, which will benefit from lower noise and hence probe smaller potential deviations from GR.

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: A Measurement of the DR6 CMB Lensing Power Spectrum and Its Implications for Structure Growth

We present new measurements of cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing over 9400 deg2 of the sky. These lensing measurements are derived from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) Data Release 6 (DR6) CMB data set, which consists of five seasons of ACT CMB temperature and polarization observations. We determine the amplitude of the CMB lensing power spectrum at 2.3% precision (43σ significance) using a novel pipeline that minimizes sensitivity to foregrounds and to noise properties. To ensure that our results are robust, we analyze an extensive set of null tests, consistency tests, and systematic error estimates and employ a blinded analysis framework. Our CMB lensing power spectrum measurement provides constraints on the amplitude of cosmic structure that do not depend on Planck or galaxy survey data, thus giving independent information about large-scale structure growth and potential tensions in structure measurements. The baseline spectrum is well fit by a lensing amplitude of A lens = 1.013 ± 0.023 relative to the Planck 2018 CMB power spectra best-fit ΛCDM model and A lens = 1.005 ± 0.023 relative to the ACT DR4 + WMAP best-fit model. From our lensing power spectrum measurement, we derive constraints on the parameter combination S8CMBL≡σ8Ωm/0.30.25 of S8CMBL=0.818±0.022 from ACT DR6 CMB lensing alone and S8CMBL=0.813±0.018 when combining ACT DR6 and Planck NPIPE CMB lensing power spectra. These results are in excellent agreement with ΛCDM model constraints from Planck or ACT DR4 + WMAP CMB power spectrum measurements. Our lensing measurements from redshifts z ∼ 0.5–5 are thus fully consistent with ΛCDM structure growth predictions based on CMB anisotropies probing primarily z ∼ 1100. We find no evidence for a suppression of the amplitude of cosmic structure at low redshifts.

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: DR6 Gravitational Lensing Map and Cosmological Parameters

We present cosmological constraints from a gravitational lensing mass map covering 9400 deg2 reconstructed from measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) made by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) from 2017 to 2021. In combination with measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations and big bang nucleosynthesis, we obtain the clustering amplitude σ 8 = 0.819 ± 0.015 at 1.8% precision, S8≡σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5=0.840±0.028 , and the Hubble constant H 0 = (68.3 ± 1.1) km s−1 Mpc−1 at 1.6% precision. A joint constraint with Planck CMB lensing yields σ 8 = 0.812 ± 0.013, S8≡σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5=0.831±0.023 , and H 0 = (68.1 ± 1.0) km s−1 Mpc−1. These measurements agree with ΛCDM extrapolations from the CMB anisotropies measured by Planck. We revisit constraints from the KiDS, DES, and HSC galaxy surveys with a uniform set of assumptions and find that S 8 from all three are lower than that from ACT+Planck lensing by levels ranging from 1.7σ to 2.1σ. This motivates further measurements and comparison, not just between the CMB anisotropies and galaxy lensing but also between CMB lensing probing z ∼ 0.5–5 on mostly linear scales and galaxy lensing at z ∼ 0.5 on smaller scales. We combine with CMB anisotropies to constrain extensions of ΛCDM, limiting neutrino masses to ∑m ν < 0.13 eV (95% c.l.), for example. We describe the mass map and related data products that will enable a wide array of cross-correlation science. Our results provide independent confirmation that the universe is spatially flat, conforms with general relativity, and is described remarkably well by the ΛCDM model, while paving a promising path for neutrino physics with lensing from upcoming ground-based CMB surveys.

Cosmology from Cross-Correlation of ACT-DR4 CMB Lensing and DES-Y3 Cosmic Shear

Abstract Cross-correlation between weak lensing of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and weak lensing of galaxies offers a way to place robust constraints on cosmological and astrophysical parameters with reduced sensitivity to certain systematic effects affecting individual surveys. We measure the angular cross-power spectrum between the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) DR4 CMB lensing and the galaxy weak lensing measured by the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Y3 data. Our baseline analysis uses the CMB convergence map derived from ACT-DR4 and Planck data, where most of the contamination due to the thermal Sunyaev Zel’dovich effect is removed, thus avoiding important systematics in the cross-correlation. In our modelling, we consider the nuisance parameters of the photometric uncertainty, multiplicative shear bias and intrinsic alignment of galaxies. The resulting cross-power spectrum has a signal-to-noise ratio =7.1 and passes a set of null tests. We use it to infer the amplitude of the fluctuations in the matter distribution (S8 ≡ σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5 = 0.782 ± 0.059) with informative but well-motivated priors on the nuisance parameters. We also investigate the validity of these priors by significantly relaxing them and checking the consistency of the resulting posteriors, finding them consistent, albeit only with relatively weak constraints. This cross-correlation measurement will improve significantly with the new ACT-DR6 lensing map and form a key component of the joint 6x2pt analysis between DES and ACT.

Cluster profiles from beyond-the-QE CMB lensing mass maps

Clusters of galaxies, being the largest collapsed structures in the universe, offer valuable insights into the nature of cosmic evolution. Precise calibration of the mass of clusters can be obtained by extracting their gravitational lensing signal on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) fluctuations. We extend and test here the performance achieved on cluster scales by the parameter-free, maximum a posteriori (MAP) CMB lensing reconstruction method, which has been shown to be optimal in the broader context of CMB lensing mass map and power spectrum estimation. In the context of cluster lensing, the lensing signal of other large-scale structures acts as an additional source of noise. We show here that by delensing the CMB fluctuations around each and every cluster, this noise variance is reduced according to expectations. We also demonstrate that the well-known bias in the temperature quadratic estimator in this regime, sourced by the strong non-Gaussianity of the signal, is almost entirely mitigated without any scale cuts. Being statistically speaking an optimal and blind lensing mass map reconstruction, the MAP estimator is a promising tool for the calibration of the masses of clusters.

Cosmological constraints from the tomography of DES-Y3 galaxies with CMB lensing from ACT DR4

We present a measurement of the cross-correlation between the MagLim galaxies selected from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) first three years of observations (Y3) and cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) Data Release 4 (DR4), reconstructed over ∼ 436 deg2 of the sky. Our galaxy sample, which covers ∼ 4143 deg2, is divided into six redshift bins spanning the redshift range of 0.20<z<1.05. We adopt a blinding procedure until passing all consistency and systematics tests. After imposing scale cuts for the cross-power spectrum measurement, we reject the null hypothesis of no correlation at 9.1σ. We constrain cosmological parameters from a joint analysis of galaxy and CMB lensing-galaxy power spectra considering a flat ΛCDM model, marginalized over 23 astrophysical and systematic nuisance parameters. We find the clustering amplitude S 8 ≡ σ 8(Ω m /0.3)0.5 = 0.75+0.04 -0.05. In addition, we constrain the linear growth of cosmic structure as a function of redshift. Our results are consistent with recent DES Y3 analyses and suggest a preference for a lower S 8 compared to results from measurements of CMB anisotropies by the Planck satellite, although at a mild level (< 2σ) of statistical significance.

12 × 2 pt combined probes: pipeline, neutrino mass, and data compression

With the rapid advance of wide-field surveys it is increasingly important to perform combined cosmological probe analyses. We present a new pipeline for simulation-based multi-probe analyses, which combines tomographic large-scale structure (LSS) probes (weak lensing and galaxy clustering) with cosmic microwave background (CMB) primary and lensing data. These are combined at the C ℓ-level, yielding 12 distinct auto- and cross-correlations. The pipeline is based on UFalconv2, a framework to generate fast, self-consistent map-level realizations of cosmological probes from input lightcones, which is applied to the CosmoGridV1 N-body simulation suite. It includes a non-Gaussian simulation-based covariance for the LSS tracers, several data compression schemes, and a neural network emulator for accelerated theoretical predictions. We validate the pipeline by comparing the simulations to these predictions, and our derived constraints to earlier analyses. We apply our framework to a simulated 12×2 pt tomographic analysis of KiDS, BOSS, and Planck, and forecast constraints for a ΛCDM model with a variable neutrino mass. We find that, while the neutrino mass constraints are driven by the CMB data, the addition of LSS data helps to break degeneracies and improves the constraint by up to 35%. For a fiducial Mν = 0.15 eV, a full combination of the above CMB+LSS data would enable a 3σ constraint on the neutrino mass. We explore data compression schemes and find that MOPED outperforms PCA and is made robust using the derivatives afforded by our automatically differentiable emulator. We also study the impact of an internal lensing tension in the CMB data, parametrized by AL , on the neutrino mass constraint, finding that the addition of LSS to CMB data including all cross-correlations is able to mitigate the impact of this systematic. Cosmology from weak lensing, galaxy clustering, CMB lensing, and tSZ – I. 10 × 2pt modelling methodology

ABSTRACT The overlap of galaxy surveys and cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments presents an ideal opportunity for joint cosmological data set analyses. In this paper we develop a halo model-based method for the first joint analysis combining these two experiments using 10 correlated two-point functions (10 × 2pt) derived from galaxy position, galaxy shear, CMB lensing convergence, and Compton-y fields. We explore this method using the Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and the Simons Observatory (SO) as examples. We find such LSS × CMB joint analyses lead to significant improvement in Figure-of-Merit of Ωm and S8 over the constraints from using LSS-only probes within Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model. We identify that the shear–y and y–y correlations are the most valuable additions when thermal Sunyaev–Zel’dolvich (tSZ) is included. We further identify the dominant sources of halo model uncertainties in the small-scale modelling, and investigate the impact of halo self-calibration due to the inclusion of small-scale tSZ information.

Cosmological Tensions and the Transitional Planck Mass Model

In this follow-up analysis, we update previous constraints on the transitional Planck mass (TPM) modified gravity model using the latest version of EFTCAMB and provide new constraints using South Pole Telescope (SPT) and Planck anisotropy data along with Planck cosmic microwave background lensing, baryon acoustic oscillations, and Type Ia supernovae data and a Hubble constant, H 0, prior from local measurements. We find that large shifts in the Planck mass lead to large suppression of power on small scales that is disfavored by both the SPT and Planck data. Using only the SPT temperature-polarization–polarization-polarization (TE-EE) data, this suppression of power can be compensated for by an upward shift of the scalar index to n s = 1.003 ± 0.016, resulting in km m−1 Mpc−1 and a ∼7% shift in the Planck mass. Including the Planck temperature-temperature (TT) ℓ ≤ 650 and Planck TE-EE data restricts the shift to be <5% at 2σ with H 0 = 70.65 ± 0.66 km m−1 Mpc−1. Excluding the H 0 prior, the SPT and Planck data constrain the shift in the Planck mass to be <3% at 2σ with a best-fit value of 0.04%, consistent with the Λ cold dark matter limit. In this case km s−1 Mpc−1, which is partially elevated by the dynamics of the scalar field in the late Universe. This differs from early dark energy models that prefer higher values of H 0 when the high-ℓ Planck TT data are excluded. We additionally constrain TPM using redshift space distortion data from BOSS DR12 and cosmic shear, galaxy–galaxy lensing, and galaxy clustering data from DES Y1, finding both disfavor transitions close to recombination, but earlier Planck mass transitions are allowed.

A method of weak lensing reconstruction through cosmic magnification with multiband photometry information

ABSTRACT Weak gravitational lensing induces flux-dependent fluctuations in the observed galaxy number density distribution. This cosmic magnification (magnification bias) effect in principle enables lensing reconstruction alternative to cosmic shear and cosmic microwave background lensing. However, the intrinsic galaxy clustering, which otherwise overwhelms the signal, has hindered its application. Through a scaling relation found by principal component analysis of the galaxy clustering in multiband photometry space, we design a minimum variance linear estimator to suppress the intrinsic galaxy clustering and to reconstruct the lensing convergence map. In combination of the CosmoDC2 galaxy mock and the CosmicGrowth simulation, we test this proposal for an LSST (Large Synoptic Survey Telescope)-like galaxy survey with ugrizY photometry bands. (1) The scaling relation holds excellently at multipole ℓ &amp;lt; 103, and remains reasonably well to ℓ ∼ 3000. (2) The linear estimator efficiently suppresses the galaxy intrinsic clustering, by a factor of ∼102. (3) For galaxies in the photo-z range 0.8 &amp;lt; zκ &amp;lt; 1.2, the reconstructed convergence map is cosmic variance limited per ℓ mode at ℓ &amp;lt; 102, and shot noise limited at $\ell \gtrsim 200$. (4) Its cross-correlation with cosmic shear of galaxies can achieve $\mathrm{ S/N}\gtrsim 200$. When the source redshift of cosmic shear galaxies zγ &amp;lt; zκ, the systematic error is negligible at all investigated scales (ℓ &amp;lt; 3000). When zγ ≥ zκ, the systematic error caused by the residual intrinsic galaxy clustering becomes non-negligible. We discuss possible mitigation of the residual intrinsic galaxy clustering required for accurate measurement at ℓ &amp;gt; 103. This work further demonstrates the potential of lensing measurement through cosmic magnification to enhance the weak lensing cosmology.

The FLAMINGO project: revisiting the S8 tension and the role of baryonic physics

ABSTRACT A number of recent studies have found evidence for a tension between observations of large-scale structure (LSS) and the predictions of the standard model of cosmology with the cosmological parameters fit to the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The origin of this ‘S8 tension’ remains unclear, but possibilities include new physics beyond the standard model, unaccounted for systematic errors in the observational measurements and/or uncertainties in the role that baryons play. Here, we carefully examine the latter possibility using the new FLAMINGO suite of large-volume cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We project the simulations onto observable harmonic space and compare with observational measurements of the power and cross-power spectra of cosmic shear, CMB lensing, and the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (tSZ) effect. We explore the dependence of the predictions on box size and resolution and cosmological parameters, including the neutrino mass, and the efficiency and nature of baryonic ‘feedback’. Despite the wide range of astrophysical behaviours simulated, we find that baryonic effects are not sufficiently large to remove the S8 tension. Consistent with recent studies, we find the CMB lensing power spectrum is in excellent agreement with the standard model, while the cosmic shear power spectrum, tSZ effect power spectrum, and the cross-spectra between shear, CMB lensing, and the tSZ effect are all in varying degrees of tension with the CMB-specified standard model. These results suggest that some mechanism is required to slow the growth of fluctuations at late times and/or on non-linear scales, but that it is unlikely that baryon physics is driving this modification.

A CMB lensing analysis of the extended mass distribution of clusters

ABSTRACT The aim of this work is to study the anisotropic weak lensing signal associated with the mass distribution of massive clusters of galaxies using the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. For this purpose, we stack patches of the Planck Collaboration (2018) CMB lensing convergence map centred on SDSS DR8 redMaPPer clusters within the redshift range [0.4, 0.5]. We obtain mean radial profiles of the convergence parameter κ finding strong signals at scales as large as 40 Mpch−1. By orienting the clusters along their major axis defined through the galaxy member distribution, we find a significant difference between the parallel and perpendicular-oriented convergence profiles. The amplitude of the profile along the parallel direction is about 50 per cent larger than that along the perpendicular direction, indicating that the clusters are well aligned with the surrounding mass distribution. From a model with an anisotropic surface mass density, we obtain a suitable agreement for both mass and ellipticities of clusters compared to results derived from weak lensing shear estimates, finding strong evidence of the correlation between the galaxy cluster member distribution and the large-scale mass distribution.

New Probe of Inflationary Gravitational Waves: Cross-Correlations of Lensed Primary CMB B-Modes with Large-Scale Structure.

We propose a new probe of inflationary gravitational waves (IGWs): the cross-correlation of the lensing of inflationary B-mode polarization with a large-scale structure (LSS) tracer, which can also be a cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing map. This is equivalent to measuring a three-point function of two CMB B-modes and an LSS tracer. We forecast expected 1σ constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio r, albeit with a simplistic foreground treatment, and find constraints of σ_{r}≃7×10^{-3} from the correlation of CMB-S4-Deep B-mode lensing and LSST galaxies, σ_{r}≃5×10^{-3} from the correlation of CMB-S4-Deep B-mode lensing and CMB-S4-Deep CMB lensing, and σ_{r}≃10^{-2} from the correlation of LiteBIRD B-mode lensing and CMB-S4-Wide lensing. Because this probe is inherently non-Gaussian, simple Gaussian foregrounds will not produce any biases to the measurement of r. While a detailed investigation of non-Gaussian foreground contamination for different cross-correlations will be essential, this observable has the potential to be a useful probe of IGWs, which, due to different sensitivity to many potential sources of systematic errors, can be complementary to standard methods for constraining r.

A Cross-internal Linear Combination Approach to Probe the Secondary CMB Anisotropies: Kinematic Sunyaev–Zel’dovich Effect and CMB Lensing

We propose a cross-internal linear combination (cross-ILC) approach to measure the small-scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies robustly against the contamination from astrophysical signals. In particular, we focus on the mitigation of systematics from cosmic infrared background (CIB) and thermal Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (tSZ) signals in kinematic Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (kSZ) power spectrum and CMB lensing. We show the cross-spectrum measurement between two CMB maps created by nulling the contributions from CIB (CIB-free map) and tSZ (tSZ-free map) to be robust for kSZ, as the approach significantly suppresses the total contribution of CIB and tSZ signals. Similarly, for CMB lensing, we use the approach introduced by Madhavacheril & Hill but with a slight modification by using the tSZ-free and CIB-free maps in the two legs of the quadratic estimator. By cross-correlating the CMB lensing map created using this technique with galaxy surveys, we show that the biases from both CIB and tSZ are negligible. We also compute the impact of unmodeled CIB/tSZ residuals on kSZ and cosmological parameters, finding the kSZ measured using the standard ILC to be significantly biased. The kSZ estimate from the cross-ILC remains less affected by CIB/tSZ, making it crucial for current and upcoming CMB surveys such as the South Pole Telescope (SPT), Simons Observatory (SO), and CMB-S4. With the cross-ILC approach, we find that the total kSZ power spectrum can be measured at very high significance in the coming years: 35σ by SPT, 22σ by SO, and 80σ by CMB-S4. Finally, we forecast constraints on the epoch of reionization using the kSZ power spectrum and find that the duration of reionization, currently unconstrained by Planck, can be constrained to = 1.5 or 0.5 depending on the choice of the prior on the optical depth to reionization. DEMNUni: the imprint of massive neutrinos on the cross-correlation between cosmic voids and CMB lensing

Cosmic voids are a powerful probe of cosmology and are one of the core observables of upcoming galaxy surveys. The cross-correlations between voids and other large-scale structure tracers such as galaxy clustering and galaxy lensing have been shown to be very sensitive probes of cosmology and among the most promising to probe the nature of gravity and the neutrino mass. However, recent measurements of the void imprint on the lensed Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) have been shown to be in tension with expectations based on LCDM simulations, hinting to a possibility of non-standard cosmological signatures due to massive neutrinos. In this work we use the DEMNUni cosmological simulations with massive neutrino cosmologies to study the neutrino impact on voids selected in photometric surveys, as well as on the void-CMB lensing cross-correlation. We show how the void properties observed in this way (size function, profiles) are affected by the presence of massive neutrinos compared to the neutrino massless case, and show how these can vary as a function of the selection method of the void sample. We comment on the possibility for massive neutrinos to be the source of the aforementioned tension. Finally, we identify the most promising setup to detect signatures of massive neutrinos in the voids-CMB lensing cross-correlation and define a new quantity useful to distinguish among different neutrino masses by comparing future observations against predictions from simulations including massive neutrinos.
