The Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph: Post‐COSTAR Characteristics

ABSTRACTWe review changes to the characteristics of the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) which resulted from the installation of the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR) on the Hubble Space Telescope. The introduction of two new optical elements into the light path altered the spectral distribution of the light, decreasing the amount of light striking the instrument by about 30% at wavelengths greater than 1200 Å and effectively eliminated all radiation at wavelengths less than 1130 Å. However, at the longer wavelengths the improved focus offset this loss when the Large Science Aperture (LSA) was used and increased the overall throughput of the Small Science Aperture (SSA) by a factor of 2. The improved focus also enhanced the spectral resolution of LSA observations and improved the ability of the instrument to observe in crowded fields.

New observations with the HST Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph of the low-redshift Lyman-Alpha clouds in the 3C 273 line of sight

We presenty spectra of 3C 273 between 1216 and 1250 A obtained in the (pre-COSTAR (Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement instrument)) configuration of the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) taken with the G160M grating with a resolution approximately = 20 km/s. The two strong Ly alpha lines at velocities of approximately 1000 and approximately 1600 km/s are well fitted with Voigt profiles and yield column densities, Doppler parameters and redshifts of log N(H I)=14.19 +/- 0.04 V(sub Dop)=40.7 +/- 3.0 km/s, V = 1012.4 +/- 2.0 km/s, and log N(H I)=14.22 +/- 0.07, V(sub Dop)=34.2 +/- 3.3 km/s and V = 1582.0 +/- 2.0 km/s, respectively. Motivated by the initial announcement by Williams and Schommer of detectable H alpha emission associated with the approximately 1600 km/s cloud, we discuss the difficulty of finding models which can account for emission of that magnitude given the observed neutral hydrogen column density, though a recent reobservation by these authors has shown the initial detection to be spurious. The C/H abundance ratio is probably less than about one-fourth of the solar abundance in these clouds, although this result is very uncertain and model dependent.

Observations of SN 1987A with the COSTAR-corrected Faint Object Camera

New near-ultraviolet and visible (O III) observations of SN 1987A obtained 2511 and 2533 days after outburst with the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR) corrected Faint Object Camera (FOC) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are presented. Even though the supernova is now very faint (m approximately equal to 19), the new data are of dramatically higher quality than those obtained previously with the aberrated telescope. The images -- which are now no longer hampered by the spherical aberration halos of the two nearby companion stars -- reveal a well-resolved symmetrical expanding envelope that can be traced out to a radius of approximately equal to 275 mas or approximately equal to 9400 km/s in the near-UV. The apparent diameter of the ejecta has grown to 255 +/- 2 mas Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) in the near-UV and 167 +/- 5 mas (FWHM) in the visible, in close agreement with the expansion rates inferred from earlier FOC observations obtained on days 1275 and 1754. The improved shell-like crescent has started to form within the inner approximately equals 60 mas core of the nebula.

The pursuit of heavy elements in the HgMn-type star Chi Lupi: Observations with the GHRS in the COSTAR ERA

Observations of the ultra-sharp-lined HgMn star Chi Lupi made with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) after the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) First Servicing Mission display the effect of the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement instrument (COSTAR) upon the spectral resolution of several observing modes. The resolution is restored to levels expected in the absence of the telescope spherical aberration for all observations made through the GHRS Large Science Aperture (LSA). The Small Science Aperture (SSA) spectra are nearly identical in resolution to the pre-COSTAR values while benefiting from higher throughput. The line spread function for the LSA relative to the SSA shows little wavelength dependence and reflects a Gaussian profile approximately 20%-30% broader than for SSA spectra. Absorption features containing components of As II and Bi II represent upper limit enhancements of 2.9 and 2.1 dex for As II and Bi II, respectively, relative to meteoritic abundance determinations.

GHRS Spectroscopy of individual stars in R136a

The installation of the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR) Instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) makes it possible to observe stars in very crowded regions with high spatial and spectral purity. To demonstrate this capability, we have used the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) to obtain spectra of two stars in the dense center of the 30 Doradus ionizing cluster: R136a5, and its nearest neighbor, R136a2, only 0.17 sec away. R136a5 is shown to ben an O3f/WN star, while R136a2 is a WN4-w star. From both Wide Field/Planetary Camera (WFPC) photometry and GHRS, spectroscopy we estimate the following properties of R136a5: T(sub eff) = 42,500 K, R = 16.4 solar radius, L(sub bol) = 8 x 10(exp 5) solar luminosity, and M approx. equals 50 solar mass -- all indicating that, despite its spectral type, R136a5, as indicated by the strength of He II lambda 1640 emission. The observed mass-loss rate, dot-M = 1.8 x 10(exp -5) solar mass/yr, is an order of magnitude higher than is assumed by current stellar evolutionary models. We argue that this high rate of mass loss will alter drastically the evolutionary path of R136a5. If so, evolutionary models for massive stars require substantial revision.

In-orbit performance of the COSTAR-corrected Faint Object Camera

The improvements due to the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR) on imaging with the Faint Object Camera (FOC) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are presented. The encircled energy performance is dramatically improved, such that 85% of the total light in the Point Spread Function (PSF) is now enclosed within a circle of radius 0.1 sec at 486 nm wavelength, compared to 18% in the spherically aberrated PSF. This is equivalent to a sensitivity increase of 1.6 mag. The effective angular resolution is also improved from 66 to 43 mas at 486 nm. These improvements are slightly offset by a 20% lower total throughput at visible wavelengths. The plate scale is changed from 22.3 mas/pixel to 14.35 mas/pixel, resulting in a decrease in the field of view from 11 x 11/sq arcsec to 7.3 x 7.3/sq arcsec for the workhorse 512 x 512 format.

Making the Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission safe

In late 1993 or early 1994 the National Aeronautics and Space Administration will undertake the most ambitious space repair mission ever attempted. Three days of complicated and arduous space walks will be performed to rectify some of the Hubble Space Telescope's (HST) anomalies and to upgrade other systems. The HST is an observatory designed for on-orbit servicing and refurbishment, making the telescope's 15 year design lifetime possible through revisit missions every 3 years. This first Servicing Mission will provide corrective optics to compensate for the primary mirror's spherical aberration in an upgrade to the Wide Field Planetary Camera and install a new Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement. The telescope's solar arrays, two rate sensor units, and gyro electronics will also be replaced. This paper will detail how the HST system safety program is conducted. Numerous safety analyses are conducted through the various phases of design, test, and fabrication and results are presented to NASA management for discussion during dedicated safety reviews. This paper will then address the system safety assessment and risk analysis methodologies used (i.e. hazard analysis, fault tree analysis, and failure modes and effects analysis) and how they are coupled with engineering and test analyses for a “synergistic picture” of the system. Some preliminary safety analysis results, showing the relationship between hazard identification, control or abatement, and finally control verification will be presented as examples of this safety process.
