Bringing knowledge into recommender systems

Recommender systems are largely used nowadays to support collaborative tasks. However, it is important to consider each user's knowledge of the system for the recommended subject. In this paper we describe the use of user knowledge to improve the recommender system of the Business Process Cooperative Editor (BPCE), a collaborative business process modeling tool. We use the concept of the Knowledge Vector, developed in a previous work on collaborative navigation, to factor user knowledge into recommendations.We present Knowledge Vectors and how they are applied to the editor. A simulation to evaluate the effectiveness of the editor's new recommender system is presented.

Cooperative visual manipulation of music notation

As computer technologies and their potential emerging applications spread out, new needs have been detected for computer-based applications of music; cooperative music notation editing both in orchestras and music schools is one of them. This article is the only public document describing the details of cooperative work on music notation of MOODS (Music Object Oriented Distributed System). MOODS is a synchronous real-time cooperative editor for music scores. Its architecture includes mechanisms for troubleshooting conflicts in real-time, managing histories of commands and versioning, and for performing selective undo. The system also includes specific solutions in order to control the editing on the account of editing permission profiles. The most important aspects of MOODS associated with cooperative work on music notation scores are reported herein. The article highlights the general problems of cooperative systems and provides rationales for the solutions, which were found to build MOODS. The MOODS system has been implemented and validated thanks to the endeavor of several musicians in orchestras, music schools, and project partners. A prototype has been demonstrated in public at the Scala Theatre in Milan, Italy.

A REMOTE COOPERATIVE DESIGN SYSTEM USING INTERACTIVE 3D GRAPHICS

This paper presents a distributed system for the cooperative design in a 3D virtual environment with full interactive 3D graphics functionality. The system includes a multi-site 3D cooperative editor, a database and a cooperative support platform. The users can design and modify a common 3D virtual world from remote sites simultaneously and cooperatively via long distance communication network. The design information can be stored into the design database and retrieved from it. The cooperative and communication support platform keeps the application away from the network process detail.

Formal Design of a Concurrent Control Algorithm for Replicated Data in Groupware Applications

One of the most important characteristics of a cooperative work system with a synchronous communication is that must sustain multiple accesses, that is to say several user writing and reading simultaneously in the same set of data. Under this premise is presented a exhaustive study of the mechanisms and algorithms of concurrent control which are described and validated formally through the employment of the formal description technique LOTOS, and detected a series of lack in their attempt by sustaining an access simultaneous to a same set of data. In this way are shown the designed, description and validation formal of an algorithm of capable concurrent control of permitting the simultaneous access to a same joint of data, reducing the conflict conditions and the need of rescinding and remakeing operations that they have been developed in a way concurrent, permitting better conditions of use in real time.Also, it is accomplished the definition of an architecture for the design of groupware applications and it is presented the implementation of a cooperative editor for multimedia documents in the one which is integrated the algorithm of concurrent control that it has been developed and defined in the present work.
