Deep Learning Network of Amomum villosum Quality Classification and Origin Identification Based on X-ray Technology.

A machine vision system based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) was proposed to sort Amomum villosum using X-ray non-destructive testing technology in this study. The Amomum villosum fruit network (AFNet) algorithm was developed to identify the internal structure for quality classification and origin identification in this manuscript. This network model is composed of experimental features of Amomum villosum. In this study, we adopted a binary classification method twice consecutive to identify the origin and quality of Amomum villosum. The results show that the accuracy, precision, and specificity of the AFNet for quality classification were 96.33%, 96.27%, and 100.0%, respectively, achieving higher accuracy than traditional CNN under the condition of faster operation speed. In addition, the model can also achieve an accuracy of 90.60% for the identification of places of origin. The accuracy of multi-category classification performed later with the consistent network structure is lower than that of the cascaded CNNs solution. With this intelligent feature recognition model, the internal structure information of Amomum villosum can be determined based on X-ray technology. Its application will play a positive role to improve industrial production efficiency.

CONVOLUTIONAL NEURAL NETWORKS FOR PROBLEMS IN TRANSPORT PHENOMENA: A THEORETICAL MINIMUM

Convolutional neural network (CNN), a deep learning algorithm, has gained popularity in technological applications that rely on interpreting images (typically, an image is a 2D field of pixels). Transport phenomena is the science of studying different fields representing mass, momentum, or heat transfer. Some of the common fields are species concentration, fluid velocity, pressure, and temperature. Each of these fields can be expressed as an image(s). Consequently, CNNs can be leveraged to solve specific scientific problems in transport phenomena. Herein, we show that such problems can be grouped into three basic categories: (a) mapping a field to a descriptor (b) mapping a field to another field, and (c) mapping a descriptor to a field. After reviewing the representative transport phenomena literature for each of these categories, we illustrate the necessary steps for constructing appropriate CNN solutions using sessile liquid drops as an exemplar problem. If sufficient training data is available, CNNs can considerably speed up the solution of the corresponding problems. The present discussion is meant to be minimalistic such that readers can easily identify the transport phenomena problems where CNNs can be useful as well as construct and/or assess such solutions.

End-To-End Gender Determination by Images of an Human Eye

For immediate gender classification based on face eye images, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is presented. The suggested architecture has much less design complexity than previous CNN systems used for pattern recognition. With the use of computer vision, we can train a computer to recognize and classify things in the physical world. In this view, computer vision entails developing mathematical models that can simulate how a human's visual system and brain work. The goal is to teach computers how to recognize objects in pictures and movies. The science of computer vision and imaging makes extensive use of CNNs, a type of deep neural network. Object recognition, picture labeling, and similarity grouping are all possible with the help of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The Sequential model will be our starting point. Last but not least, CNN is constructed using a number of layers, including an input layer, an output layer, and multiple hidden layers. Additionally, fully connected layers, convolutional, an activation function layer (typically ReLU or Softmax), normalisation layers, and pooling layers are all included in a CNN's hidden layers. This network was trained with a Sequential model, binary cross volatility as the loss function, and RMSProp as the operator. Dphi data set, which contains around 9000 pictures, is used to evaluate the suggested CNN solution. As a result of our efforts, we are able to attain a 95.78% success rate in In less than 0.27 milliseconds, a neural network can analyze and label a 32 x 32 pixel facial image, giving it the ability to scan more than 3700 images per second. A training converges within 5 epochs. These findings demonstrate that the suggested CNN is a viable method for instantaneous gender recognition.

Convolutional Networks Outperform Linear Decoders in Predicting EMG From Spinal Cord Signals.

Advanced algorithms are required to reveal the complex relations between neural and behavioral data. In this study, forelimb electromyography (EMG) signals were reconstructed from multi-unit neural signals recorded with multiple electrode arrays (MEAs) from the corticospinal tract (CST) in rats. A six-layer convolutional neural network (CNN) was compared with linear decoders for predicting the EMG signal. The network contained three session-dependent Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) feature layers and three Gamma function layers were shared between sessions. Coefficient of determination (R2) values over 0.2 and correlations over 0.5 were achieved for reconstruction within individual sessions in multiple animals, even though the forelimb position was unconstrained for most of the behavior duration. The CNN performed visibily better than the linear decoders and model responses outlasted the activation duration of the rat neuromuscular system. These findings suggest that the CNN model implicitly predicted short-term dynamics of skilled forelimb movements from neural signals. These results are encouraging that similar problems in neural signal processing may be solved using variants of CNNs defined with simple analytical functions. Low powered firmware can be developed to house these CNN solutions in real-time applications.

Indoor Positioning Based on Fingerprint-Image and Deep Learning

Wi-Fi and magnetic field fingerprinting have been a hot topic in indoor positioning researches because of their ubiquity and location-related features. Wi-Fi signals can provide rough initial positions, and magnetic fields can further improve the positioning accuracies, therefore many researchers have tried to combine the two signals for high-accuracy indoor localization. Currently, state-of-the-art solutions design separate algorithms to process different indoor signals. Outputs of these algorithms are generally used as inputs of data fusion strategies. These methods rely on computationally expensive particle filters, labor-intensive feature analysis, and time-consuming parameter tuning to achieve better accuracies. Besides, particle filters need to estimate the moving directions of particles, limiting smartphone orientation to be stable, and aligned with the user's moving directions. In this paper, we adopted a convolutional neural network (CNN) to implement an accurate and orientation-free positioning system. Inspired by the state-of-the-art image classification methods, we design a novel hybrid location image using Wi-Fi and magnetic field fingerprints, and then a CNN is employed to classify the locations of the fingerprint images. In order to prevent the overfitting problem of the positioning CNN on limited training datasets, we also propose to divide the learning process into two steps to adopt proper learning strategies for different network branches. We show that the CNN solution is able to automatically learn location patterns, thus significantly lower the workforce burden of designing a localization system. Our experimental results convincingly reveal that the proposed positioning method achieves an accuracy of about 1 m under different smartphone orientations, users, and use patterns.

O-CNN

We present O-CNN , an Octree-based Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for 3D shape analysis. Built upon the octree representation of 3D shapes, our method takes the average normal vectors of a 3D model sampled in the finest leaf octants as input and performs 3D CNN operations on the octants occupied by the 3D shape surface. We design a novel octree data structure to efficiently store the octant information and CNN features into the graphics memory and execute the entire O-CNN training and evaluation on the GPU. O-CNN supports various CNN structures and works for 3D shapes in different representations. By restraining the computations on the octants occupied by 3D surfaces, the memory and computational costs of the O-CNN grow quadratically as the depth of the octree increases, which makes the 3D CNN feasible for high-resolution 3D models. We compare the performance of the O-CNN with other existing 3D CNN solutions and demonstrate the efficiency and efficacy of O-CNN in three shape analysis tasks, including object classification, shape retrieval, and shape segmentation.

Gender classification: a convolutional neural network approach

An approach using a convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed for real-time gender classification based on facial images. The proposed CNN architecture exhibits a much reduced design complexity when compared with other CNN solutions applied in pattern recognition. The number of processing layers in the CNN is reduced to only four by fusing the convolutional and subsampling layers. Unlike in conventional CNNs, we replace the convolution operation with cross-correlation, hence reducing the computational load. The network is trained using a second-order backpropagation learning algorithm with annealed global learning rates. Performance evaluation of the proposed CNN solution is conducted on two publicly available face databases of SUMS and AT&T. We achieve classification accuracies of 98.75% and 99.38% on the SUMS and AT&T databases, respectively. The neural network is able to process and classify a 32 × 32 pixel face image in less than 0.27 ms, which corresponds to a very high throughput of over 3700 images per second. Training converges within less than 20 epochs. These results correspond to a superior classification performance, verifying that the proposed CNN is an effective real-time solution for gender recognition.
