Effectiveness of geometrical instructional teaching strategy on junior secondary school students’ Achievement, Gender and Attitude in Plane Geometry in Odeda Local Government, Ogun state, Nigeria

This research study was concerned with the effectiveness of Geometrical Instructional teaching strategy on Junior Secondary School Students’ achievement, gender and attitude in Plane geometry in Odeda Local Government, Ogun State, Nigeria. The research study compared the effect of using Geometrical Instructional Teaching Strategy(GITS) and the conventional teaching approach on the achievement, gender and attitude of Junior Secondary School Students in Plane Geometry. The research was a pre-test post-test quasi-experimental control group design. Four (4) Junior secondary schools were purposefully chosen because of the availability of computers in these schools. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select the sample of 240 students (120 males and 120 females) drawn from four schools within the local Government. Four intact classes were used by the researchers for both experimental and the control groups. The experimental group was taught using Geometrical Instructional Teaching strategy package while the control group was taught using conventional teaching approach method. The Geometry Achievement test (GAT) consisting of (15) multiple choice items with four options, and Attitude Inventory on Plane Geometry (IIPG) were administered to students as pre-test and post-test before and after the treatment. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation to answer the four (4) research questions while the hypotheses were tested using analysis of covariance(ANCOVA). Result of the study revealed that students taught plane geometry using Geometrical Instructional Teaching Strategy package achieved higher mean scores than those students taught using conventional method. The result also revealed non-significant difference in the mean achievement and the mean attitude scores of males and female’s students taught plane geometry using Geometrical Instructional package and those students taught using conventional method. Some recommendations were made among which are that mathematics teachers should include the use of Geometrical Instructional Teaching Strategy to teach plane geometry.

A Blended Teaching Model of College English Based on Deep Learning

Blending traditional face-to-face instruction with online learning components, this model aims to enhance student engagement and improve learning outcomes. This paper introduces a novel blended teaching model for college English courses, integrating Conditional Random Field (CRF) techniques with deep learning frameworks. Blended learning, combining traditional face-to-face instruction with online learning components, has gained traction in higher education for its potential to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. CRF blended teaching integrates the principles of conditional random fields, a powerful probabilistic graphical model, with traditional teaching methodologies to enhance learning outcomes. Unlike conventional teaching approaches that often rely on linear or static instructional methods, CRF blended teaching embraces a more dynamic and adaptive framework. By leveraging CRF, which models the dependencies between different instructional variables, educators can design personalized learning experiences tailored to individual student needs and learning styles. This approach enables the seamless integration of diverse instructional modalities, including face-to-face instruction, online resources, and interactive learning activities. The proposed model CRF algorithms to effectively capture the sequential dependencies inherent in language learning tasks, such as sentence parsing and part-of-speech tagging. By integrating deep learning architectures, including recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and transformers, model with large-scale linguistic corpora to improve accuracy and generalization. The model achieves a 15% increase in students' English proficiency scores and a 25% improvement in comprehension compared to traditional teaching methods, underscoring its effectiveness in enhancing learning outcomes.

Enhancing reading and writing instruction in inclusive environments: A meaningful and collaborative approach

n inclusive educational settings, educators often face challenges in effectively allocating time and providing appropriate support for students with disabilities. This research aims to address these challenges by proposing a complementary method that integrates seamlessly with conventional teaching approaches, benefiting both teachers and students in the realm of reading and writing education. The primary objective is to develop a comprehensive design that supports reading and writing instruction within an inclusive environment. The proposed approach adopts a holistic perspective by incorporating classroom walls, cubes, and diverse notebooks into the learning environment. At its core, this approach revolves around two fundamental elements: the utilization of meaningful reading and writing methods and the emphasis on collaborative learning. The study is substantiated by three tiny-research initiatives, providing practical insights into the implementation of inclusive classrooms aligned with the proposed recommendations. This research introduces a holistic design, and through various investigations conducted during its development, addresses key aspects such as the design specifications for the cubes, the functionality of notebooks facilitating interaction between walls and cube surfaces, and strategies for facilitating unhindered reading and writing instruction. The findings contribute to answering crucial questions on considerations for creating an inclusive and effective learning environment for primary reading and writing instruction.

Enhancing secondary school students’ engagement in chemistry through 7E context-based instructional strategy supported with simulation

Now days, the level of students’ engagement in secondary school chemistry is low. The aim of this study was then to enhance student chemistry engagement through simulation-integrated 7E context-based instructional strategy and compared its efficacy with 7E context-based instructional strategy, simulation-integrated conventional teaching approach, and conventional teaching approach. For the quantitative part, 15-item chemistry engagement scale was utilized to collect data from 229 grade 10 students as part of a quasi-experimental pre-/post-test non-equivalent control group design. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect qualitative data. The study’s findings revealed that, when compared to the other instructional strategies, the simulation-integrated 7E context-based instructional strategy was the most successful at raising students’ overall engagement and its dimensions. This study implies that implementing a simulation-integrated 7E context-based instructional strategy can boost students’ overall and individual levels of engagement in chemistry. Thus, to enhance chemistry learning, teachers may progressively move from the conventional approach to the use of simulation-integrated 7E context-based approach over the other strategies.

Meaningful engagement of preschoolers through storytelling pedagogy

Engaging students in their learning depends on the teachers’ pedagogical practices. The first author is a STEAM scholar and preschool educator who realized engagement is necessary for meaningful learning. For this, teachers and students must have exposure to innovative and arts-integrated pedagogy (e.g., storytelling). However, the teachers in the first author’s school practiced a conventional teaching approach, such as lecture and monotonous activity-based instruction, that compelled a disengaged learning culture. Similarly, storytelling was limited to reading aloud from storybooks. Thus, this paper investigated integrating storytelling pedagogy to engage preschoolers in learning by centralizing on the research question: How do teachers integrate storytelling pedagogy to enhance meaningful learning? This study used an action research method to intervene in the current pedagogical practice with storytelling as an innovative pedagogy. The teachers and students of Upper Kindergarten were involved in practicing storytelling approaches to conceptualize content knowledge and learn meaningfully. The findings of this study revealed that storytelling as an innovative pedagogy enhances the students’ engagement in their learning process. Similarly, it also helps to enrich students’ imaginative and creative skills, which are crucial soft skills in the 21<sup>st </sup>century. Moreover, storytelling enhances a deeper understanding of the content knowledge if the stories are developed based on the content knowledge of the curriculum. Therefore, storytelling is an innovative and arts-integrated pedagogy to foster preschoolers’ knowledge and skills through engagement and motivation. This research is applicable for educators and schoolteachers to improve and innovate their teaching-learning practices for students’ meaningful learning experiences.

A transversal and practical education as a business success factor: literature review of learning process of basic design through ICT tools

The ongoing societal transformation propelled by innovation and digitalization is amplifying the demand for technological adeptness among current and upcoming professionals. Consequently, there's a pressing need to revamp the educational system and its methodologies to elevate the requisite skill set. Spatial reasoning, innovative thinking, and creativity stand as pivotal proficiencies essential for enabling future professionals to swiftly craft adaptable prototypes catering to client needs. However, conventional teaching approaches exhibit shortcomings in nurturing spatial reasoning, necessitating deeper exploration within the realm of education. This study delves into novel 3D design tools aimed at facilitating three-dimensional modelling within educational settings. The findings underscore the imperative use of digital tools in crafting 3D objects, fostering the development of spatial visualization skills. Moreover, they emphasize the significance of intertwining ICT knowledge, programming skills, and pertinent soft skills. Such an amalgamation equips future professionals with enhanced work capabilities, a comprehensive grasp of market needs, and refined product commercialization strategies.

Teacher educators’ and students’ perspectives in transitioning from conventional to online teaching and learning

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the sudden transition of teaching and learning from the perspectives of the teacher educators and students of an education graduate faculty in one of the universities in Brunei Darussalam. During the first COVID-19 outbreak in the country, higher education institutions shifted the conventional teaching and learning approach from mostly face-to-face to fully online teaching and learning. The online questionnaires were distributed to the teaching staff and students via email and the response rate of the online questionnaires for teacher educators and students was 88% and 57.6% respectively. Descriptive statistics was used to analyse the data where frequency and percentage were then utilised to describe the patterns of the responses. It was found that half of the teacher educators and students perceived there were more interactions through online teaching activities between the teaching staff and their students. However, both staff and students mentioned that their physical and mental wellbeing were also affected due to the sudden transition to online teaching and learning.

Effectiveness of problem-based learning strategies compared to conventional anatomy teaching approaches.

To determine the effectiveness of problem-based learning compared to conventional teaching strategies, and to determine the impact of sub-disciplines of Anatomy on learning outcomes of the subject. The cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted at Bahria University Health Sciences, Karachi, from August to October 2022, and comprised 1st and 2nd year medical students and 1st year dental students of either gender who were being taught by the hybrid method including both conventional and problem-based learning strategies. Data was collected using a questionnaire circulated through Google Forms. It had close-ended questions that were scored on a Likert scale. Anatomy sub-disciplines explored were gross, embryology and histology. Data was analysed using SPSS 23. Of the 251 subjects, 125(49.8%) were males and 126(50.2%) were females. The overall age ranged aged 18- 23 years. There were 115(45.8%) 1st year medical students, 111(44.2%) 2nd year medical students and 25(10%) 1st year dental students. Among 1st year medical students 60(52.17%), among 2nd year medical students 64(57.6%) and among 1st year dental students 14(56%) respondents favoured problem-based learning compared to conventional methodology. Highly significant results were obtained regarding need of topic revision (p<0.001), whether knowledge of conventional teaching method is enough for understanding the clinical scenarios (p=0.017, whether pictures shown during the problem-based learning sessions were enough for understanding anatomy (p=0.035), relevance of questions in oral structured practical examination (p=0.019) and viva (p=0.002). When the participants were asked regarding the anatomy sub-discipline that required revision for comprehensive learning, 72(28.3%) mentioned gross anatomy. Students considered problem-based learning to be more inducive in enhancing learning compared to conventional teaching.

Strengthening the Attainment of Major Competencies of Program Outcomes through Open-ended Experiment using Statistical Designs

Abstract—Unit operations are very essential part of the chemical engineering and allied disciplines; and hence, basic knowledge about the principles and equipment used for various unit operations is mandatory for process engineer. Unit operations course introduces the foundation of process engineering concepts at the second year of undergraduate program of Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology. This course mainly focuses on the most essential unit operations utilized in Chemical and allied process industries such as mass transfer, heat transfer, momentum transfer and mechanical operations. The conventional teaching approach practiced so far in Unit Operations Laboratory course was not so effective in the attainment of certain specific core competencies of Program Outcomes (POs). To tackle this challenge, we introduced a system of classifying laboratory experiments into four distinct categories: Demonstration, Exercise, Structural Inquiry, and Open-ended experiments. These categorized experiments were thoughtfully crafted to target various significant technical and professional outcomes such as Investigations of Complex Engineering Problems, Communication, Life-long learning, Follow of Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). The evaluation criteria for each type of experiment were aligned with program outcomes, competencies, and performance indicators. This alignment proved highly beneficial in achieving a more precise assessment of program outcomes. This study focuses on implementing an interactive and collaborative learning approach in the Unit Operations laboratory course. of Experiments. More precisely, the study employs Central Composite Design (CCD) and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) concepts to examine how various factors influence the Leaching (Solid-Liquid Extraction) process. The leaching process is most important unit operations used in the extraction of substances from solids. The study helped in addressing several important competencies pertaining to the Program Outcomes- PO-4: Demonstrating the capacity to design, execute experiments, and analyze data; PO-10: Exhibiting effective communication skills; PO-12: Embracing lifelong learning; PSO-13: Adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). The assessment of student performance employed a rubric-based approach, and the attainment of program outcomes was documented. It was observed that, open-ended experimental approach, led to the improvements in the attainment of PO’s in terms of competencies and performance indicators. To enhance the teaching-learning process, formal and anonymous feedback was gathered from students to identify areas of improvement and deficiencies. Challenges of Online English Trainers in Punjab

Indian English teachers swiftly adopted online education as a response to COVID-19, resulting in a notable transformation in teaching approaches and classroom dynamics. This study utilizes the theoretical framework of technological pedagogical content knowledge to examine the extent to which 210 Indian educators encounter challenges related to technological, pedagogical adaptation, and communication. The study used a mixed-methods approach. The findings prominently revealed a prevailing pattern of dissatisfaction with crucial technological factors, including infrastructure, device compatibility, software reliability, and security, as shown by an average score of 2.05. In addition, educators indicated encountering minor difficulties in efficiently managing different learning platforms, sustaining student participation, and delivering prompt feedback, as evidenced by an average mean score of 2.77. Furthermore, there was a notable degree of complexity detected in nonverbal communication and engagement, as well as in facilitating engaging talks and managing asynchronous interactions. The average score of 3.34 indicates that these areas are major impediments. Hence, the theme analysis highlights the urgent requirement for strong technical support, secure and reliable online platforms, and the integration of interactive tools to improve the overall standard of online instruction. The current study emphasizes the necessity of adapting conventional teaching approaches to meet the evolving demands of digital English language education in a post-pandemic context

Relationship Between Teaching Styles and Mathematics Achievement of Ibadan North Secondary School Students: Practical Application of Peer-Cooperative Learning to Improve Retention of STEM Majors

&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;Teachers and teaching styles are two important factors influencing students’ academic performance. In this action research study, we investigated the differential effectiveness of two teaching methods, conventional learning (CL) and peer-cooperative learning (PCL), on students’ academic performance in fractions. A sample of 120 tenth grade mathematics students from Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State in Nigeria was used for the study. The students were selected from three different secondary schools and grouped into two groups: the experimental (PCL) group and the control (CL) group, each having 60 students. A sample of 5 multiple-choice objective and 5 theory test questions titled Fraction Performance Test (FPT) was used to measure their academic performance after the treatment, and the assessment test scores were recorded. Descriptive statistics of the mean were used to answer the research question, while the two-way ANOVA technique was adopted for testing the research hypothesis at an alpha of 0.05. Summarily, the F (3, 116) statistic (= 8.55, &lt;em&gt;p&lt;/em&gt; &lt; .001) indicates significant differences in the effectiveness of the teaching methods. The mean scores also reveal that peer-cooperative learning was more effective than the conventional teaching approach. While the former proved to be a more efficacious treatment for female students, the latter was more suitable for male students. We recommend that different approaches be attempted by teachers, and the most effective in overcoming students’ resistance to learning and improving their academic performance be adopted.&lt;/p&gt;

Challenges in Arabic Language Instruction: Evaluating the Al-Syam’iyyah Al-Syafawiyyah Method as an Alternative Teaching Approach

The prevailing issues in education have shown that schools and teachers have struggled to implement effective Arabic learning methodologies. While teachers comprehend various teaching approaches, these methods are often ineffective for students. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of the al-sam'iyyah al-syafawiyyah learning method in teaching Arabic at SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Yogyakarta. The research used a qualitative method to involve teachers and students within SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Yogyakarta. Data collection methods included interviews, observations, and documentation. The analysis followed Miles and Huberman's data display, reduction, and verification techniques. Triangulation was utilized to fortify the research data from fieldwork and primary sources (literature). The study revealed significant disparities between the al-sam'iyyah al-syafawiyyah method and the conventional teaching approaches practiced by teachers at the school. According to teacher feedback, the predominant method used thus far has been lecturing, resulting in 60% of students not mastering the 'mufradāt.' Conversely, the implications of the al-sam'iyyah al-syafawiyyah method indicated highly engaged, active, and practical students. This method primarily focuses on enhancing student concentration through listening, imitating teacher explanations, and practicing the fluency of 'mufradāt.'

The effect of simulation-integrated context-based instructional strategy on grade 10 students’ achievement in chemistry

The purpose of this study was to examine whether a simulation-integrated context-based 7E instructional strategy (SICBIS) could increase students’ achievement in the chemistry of oxides, acids, bases, and salts (COABS) when compared to context-based 7E instructional strategy (CBIS), simulation-integrated conventional teaching approach (SICTA), and conventional teaching approach (CTA). An embedded mixed-method was employed. For the quantitative part, a 25-item chemistry achievement test was utilized to collect data from 229 grade 10 students as part of a quasi-experimental pre-/post-test control group study design. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized to analyse the data. Semi-structured interviews were used to triangulate it the with quantitative results. Quantitative results demonstrated that although difference was not statistically significant, incorporating computer simulations within CBIS helps students do better than they would have without. SICBIS and CBIS outperformed SICTA and CTA in COABS. Also, implications and recommendations are made.

Disaster Education in the Context of Postsecondary Education: A Systematic Literature Review

The upward tendency of global disasters and associated losses urgently calls for enhancing disaster education (DE) and professional training. Although postsecondary education institutions (PSEIs) play an essential role in this educational mission, a comprehensive understanding of DE development in PSEIs remains unclear. In response to this knowledge deficit, this article employed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) approach to explore the current development of DE in PSEIs through reviewing 76 publications from 2011 to 2022 through a mixed-method analysis process (univariate analysis and thematic inquiry). The quantitative analysis outcomes illustrate that the studies were unevenly distributed globally. The qualitative findings demonstrate the following fourfold characteristics of DE in PSEIs: (1) in terms of pedagogical characteristics of DE, there is a call for a radical shift in pedagogical strategies because the conventional teaching approaches are inadequate in tackling the potential risks and emerging hazards; (2) disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives have been integrated into DE, addressing diverse disasters and their differential influences; (3) through community-based partnerships, PSEIs can provide informal and nonformal education to affected individuals and communities; and (4) interconnections between DE and other educational approaches that broadly address global climate change have been recognized, contributing to resilience and sustainability. Based on these outcomes, this study recommends future DE-specific research could focus on (1) exploring potential radical pedagogical approaches to respond to emerging risks and hazards, (2) stimulating cross-disciplinary collaboration to address the full spectrum of disasters’ societal impacts, and (3) increasing collaboration between PSEIs and nonacademic organizations to raise grassroots awareness through informal DE.

Promoting design thinking and creativity by making: A quasi-experiment in the information technology course

Design thinking and creativity are instrumental elements of 21st century skills. In K-12 education, much is left to be known about how to develop curricula to more effectively foster students’ design and creative thinking. This study introduced maker education to the information technology course to investigate the effects of design-oriented making on students’ learning of programming, creativity, and design thinking. Seventy-two fifth-grade students from two classes at a rural primary school in China participated in this eight-week study. Both classes learned about programming a digital greeting card with Mind+, when the experimental group was taught with a design-oriented making pedagogy, whereas the control group learned through a conventional teaching approach. Questionnaires were used to assess students’ knowledge learning, creativity and design thinking competence. Findings showed that when embedded in an open-ended problem-solving context, integrating design thinking into making as a pedagogy can be conducive to the development of design thinking and creativity. Important implications are made to inform future endeavors in fostering student thinking in maker education.

Exploring Teaching Evaluation of English Flipped Classrooms in Chinese Higher Education

The conventional teaching approach is reversed in the flipped classroom, which means a reversal of teaching and learning. Learners use micro-videos and guided learning plans to learn knowledge before class. Then, they discuss, communicate, and cooperate with teachers and classmates in class to promote the internalization of knowledge. At the same time, the flipped classroom is student-oriented, with the teacher as the leader and organizer to help students acquire knowledge. Although this teaching model is widely used in the world, it is in its infancy in China, and there is little research on the teaching practice and assessment system of English flipped classroom in higher education. Therefore, this paper analyzes the current situation of English flipped classroom in higher education in China by reviewing four aspects: research on the practice of flipped classroom, theoretical research, problems of assessment in practice, and countermeasures of assessment problems in practice, and proposes corresponding countermeasures and suggestions for improvement, so as to provide reference and reference for English teachers in higher education of China.

Effectiveness of blended teaching in preservice teacher education: A meta-analysis

Blended teaching (BT) has the potential to prepare preservice teachers with lifelong learning capabilities that are essential for the constantly changing teaching profession. However, little is known about its effectiveness in this field. This review evaluated the effectiveness of BT in preservice teacher education, compared to conventional teaching approaches. A total of 15 experimental studies were included in the meta-analysis. Standardized differences in mean were chosen to compute the pooled effect size at 95% confidence interval (CI). The results demonstrate that BT outperformed the conventional teaching approaches in influencing preservice teachers’ academic performance (d = 0.922 (95% CI [0.403, 1.436], p < 0.001)), anxiety (d = −0.27 (95% CI [−0.537, −0.003], p = 0.048)), attitude (d = 1.302 (95% CI [0.008, 2.595], p = 0.049)), and self-efficacy for teaching (d = 0.54 (95% CI [0.203, 0.877], p = 0.002)). Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Students' perception to an interactive web-based response system in oral and maxillofacial pathology teaching.

This study evaluated dental students' perceptions and adherence to an interactive web-based response system in the teaching of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Between 2018 and 2019, students from a single Brazilian dental school used the Poll Everywhere® app to answer questions on subjects taught during an Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology course. At the end of the academic semester, the students completed a questionnaire containing 10 questions regarding the app's use. The study included 123 students. Regarding the devices used to answer the questions on the app, 117 (95.1%) students used a smartphone and 3 (2.4%) used a laptop. Almost all students (121; 98.4%) agreed that this interactive web-based response system provided the teacher with a better overview of students' understanding and improved their self-assessment of the acquired knowledge of the subjects. Most students (118; 95.9%) preferred classes using this technology and 122 (99.2%) stated that using the app made them feel more engaged in classes. In addition, all students agreed that the app improved student-teacher interactions. Most students (119; 96.7%) considered the digital interactive method more attractive than the conventional teaching approach, and 99 (80.5%) did not have any negative comments regarding the app. In conclusion, the Poll Everywhere® app provides a more dynamic and attractive educational environment for Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology teaching.

Effect of Metacognitive Awareness on Students’ Achievement in Mathematics in Public Secondary Schools in Kitui County, Kenya

Deep conceptual understanding enables learners to transfer new knowledge into new situations and apply it in new contexts. Individuals’ understandings of their thought processes as well as monitoring their progress is fundamental for deepening learners’ understanding and that may lead to improved performance. The overall students’ performance in mathematics at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) has been low compared to other subjects. Students’ knowledge of facts and skills need to occur in the context of a meaningful and conceptual framework of subject matter that deepens learners’ understanding. The purpose of the study was to investigate effect of Metacognitive awareness on secondary school students’ achievement in mathematics. The Research employed a Quasi-experimental design and in particular Solomon, Four Design. A stratified random sampling technique was used to draw four boys’ and four girls’ extra county participating secondary schools. Assignment of the four schools in each category to either experimental or control group was done through simple random sampling. A sample size of 360 Form three students was used. Students in the experimental groups were taught Formulae and Variations using Metacognitive IMPROVE programme while control groups were taught the same topic using Conventional Teaching Approach (CTA). The instrument for data collection used was metacognitive Awareness Inventory Questionnaire (MAIQ). The overall reliability coefficient of MAIQ using Cronbach alpha obtained was 0.754. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, percentages and Standard Deviation) and inferential statistics (test, one-way ANOVA and Post hoc Analysis). The hypotheses was tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data analysis was undertaken with the help of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0 software. The results showed that students’ Metacognitive awareness resulted to students’ development of the skills of planning, monitoring and evaluating about their own cognitive activities and monitoring the approach they expected to be important for problem solving. The study recommends that teachers should organize the course contents to increase cognitive awareness of the students.
