A Locomotion Mode Recognition Algorithm using adaptive Dynamic Movement Primitives.

Control systems of robotic prostheses should be designed to decode the users' intent to start, stop, or change locomotion; and to select the suitable control strategy, accordingly. This paper describes a locomotion mode recognition algorithm based on adaptive Dynamic Movement Primitive models used as locomotion templates. The models take foot-ground contact information and thigh roll angle, measured by an inertial measurement unit, for generating continuous model variables to extract features for a set of Support Vector Machines. The proposed algorithm was tested offline on data acquired from 10 intact subjects and 1 subject with transtibial amputation, in ground-level walking and stair ascending/descending activities. Following subject-specific training, results on intact subjects showed that the algorithm can classify initiatory and steady-state steps with up to 100.00% median accuracy medially at 28.45% and 27.40% of the swing phase, respectively. While the transitory steps were classified with up to 87.30% median accuracy medially at 90.54% of the swing phase. Results with data of the transtibial amputee showed that the algorithm classified initiatory, steady-state, and transitory steps with up to 92.59%, 100%, and 93.10% median accuracies medially at 19.48%, 51.47%, and 93.33% of the swing phase, respectively. The results support the feasibility of this approach in robotic prosthesis control.

Adaptive estimation of continuous gait phase based on capacitive sensors.

Continuous gait phase plays an important role in robotic prosthesis control. In this paper, we have conducted the offline adaptive estimation (at different speeds and on different ramps) of continuous gait phase of robotic transtibial prosthesis based on the adaptive oscillators. We have used the capacitive sensing method to record the deformation of the muscles. Two transtibial amputees joined in this study. Based on the strain signals of the prosthetic foot and the capacitive signals of the residual limb, the maximum and minimum of estimation errors are 0.80rad and 0.054rad, respectively, and their corresponding ratios in one gait cycle are 1.27% and 0.86%, respectively. This paper proposes an effective method to estimate the continuous gait phase based on the capacitive signals of the residual muscles, which provides a basis for the continuous control of robotic transtibial prosthesis.

Dynamic Fusion of Electromyographic and Electroencephalographic Data towards Use in Robotic Prosthesis Control

We demonstrate improved performance in the classification of bioelectric data for use in systems such as robotic prosthesis control, by data fusion using low-cost electromyography (EMG) and electroencephalography (EEG) devices. Prosthetic limbs are typically controlled through EMG, and whilst there is a wealth of research into the use of EEG as part of a brain-computer interface (BCI) the cost of EEG equipment commonly prevents this approach from being adopted outside the lab. This study demonstrates as a proof-of-concept that multimodal classification can be achieved by using low-cost EMG and EEG devices in tandem, with statistical decision-level fusion, to a high degree of accuracy. We present multiple fusion methods, including those based on Jensen-Shannon divergence which had not previously been applied to this problem. We report accuracies of up to 99% when merging both signal modalities, improving on the best-case single-mode classification. We hence demonstrate the strengths of combining EMG and EEG in a multimodal classification system that could in future be leveraged as an alternative control mechanism for robotic prostheses.

Patient-Preferred Prosthetic Ankle-Foot Alignment for Ramps and Level-Ground Walking

Patient preference of lower limb prosthesis behavior informally guides clinical decision making, and may become increasingly important for tuning new robotic prostheses. However, the processes for quantifying preference are still being developed, and the strengths and weaknesses of preference are not adequately understood. The present study sought to characterize the reliability (consistency) of patient preference of alignment during level-ground walking, and determine the patient-preferred ankle angle for ascent and descent of a 10° ramp, with implications for the design and control of robotic prostheses. Seven subjects with transtibial amputation walked over level ground, and ascended and descended a 10° ramp on a semi-active prosthetic ankle capable of unweighted repositioning in dorsiflexion and plantarflexion. Preferred ankle angle was measured with an adaptive forced-choice psychophysics paradigm, in which subjects walked on a randomized static ankle angle and reported whether they would prefer the ankle to be dorsiflexed or plantarflexed. Subjects had reliable preferences for alignment during level-ground walking, with deviations of 1.5° from preference resulting in an 84% response rate preferring changes toward the preference. Relative to level walking, subjects preferred 7.8° (SD: 4.8°) of dorsiflexion during ramp ascent, and 5.3° (SD: 3.8°) plantarflexion during ramp descent. As the ankle angle better matched the ramp angle, socket pressures and tibial progression (shank pitch) both more closely mirrored those during level walking. These findings provide baseline behaviors for prosthetic ankles capable of adapting to slopes based on patient preference, and provide strong evidence that people with transtibial amputation can finely perceive ankle alignment.

Maximum Dorsiflexion Detection Based on an On-Board Adaptive Algorithm for Transtibial Amputees With Robotic Prostheses

Maximum dorsiflexion (MDF) is an important gait event corresponding to the maximum ankle dorsiflexion angle in each gait cycle. MDF timing plays an important role in the control of robotic prosthesis. This article puts forward an on-board adaptive algorithm to detect MDF timing of robotic transtibial prosthesis in different walking conditions (at different speeds and on different ramps) and for different users. Based on the adaptive algorithm, we can get a time-variant detection model. The framework of the adaptive algorithm is composed of: 1) training data collecting and labeling; 2) model training and real-time detection; and 3) model updating according to the detection results. Based on the adaptive algorithm, we conducted speed and ramp experiments to detect MDF timings at slow, normal, and fast speeds, and on ramps with different inclination angles (10°, 5°, 0°, -5°, and -10°). Three transtibial amputee participated in the experiments. The model training/updating time ranges from 3.6 to 4.1 s and the detection time ranges from 0.95 to 1.17 ms for different speeds and ramps. In real-time detection, there is false detection (1.67%) at normal walking speed. In addition, all MDF timings are detected correctly (accuracy: 100%) based on the adaptive algorithm. The mean detection delays are 7.23, 18.27, and 7.5 ms corresponding to slow, normal and fast speeds and 10.60, 10.30, 18.27, 10.27, and 15.63 ms for ramps of different inclination angles (10°, 5°, 0°, -5°, and -10°). Compared with the proposed adaptive algorithm, both the nonadaptive and adaptive threshold decision methods cause more false detections. The results show that the proposed approach for MDF timing detection has adaptations to different walking conditions (speeds and ramps) and prosthesis users, which indicates that the adaptive algorithm is effective and shows the potential in robotic prosthesis control in the future. Note to Practitioners-This article proposes an on-board adaptive algorithm to detect the maximum dorsiflexion (MDF) timing based on inertial measurement unit (IMU) and ankle angle sensor for robotic transtibial prosthesis users in each gait cycle. IMU and angle sensor are integrated in the prosthesis, and the adaptive algorithm is embedded in the control circuit of prosthesis. The adaptive algorithm can realize the model updating continuously for real-time MDF timing detection with collected and labeled training data. The proposed adaptive algorithm shows satisfactory adaptation for MDF timing detection in different walking speed and ramp conditions. In addition, the adaptive algorithm also shows some generalizations for prosthesis users, which are useful to improve prosthesis control.
