Technical effectiveness of insecticides against oriental fruit mothand paech twigborerin peachorchards of the South of Ukraine

Goal. To determine the effectiveness of insecticides for peach orchards protection from the main Lepidoptera pests on the basis of clarifying their biological characteristics in the conditions of the South of Ukraine.
 Methods. Field methods. Technical effectiveness of insecticides was determined in peach orchards of Redhaven and Zolota Moskva cultivars. The scheme of the experiment included 6 variants using 5 chemical insecticides. Biological features of Lepidoptera pests development were specified using pheromone traps, in accordance with the generally accepted methodology.
 Results. It was determined that in the conditions of the South of Ukraine during the vegetation periods of the studied years, the development of the oriental fruit moth (Grapholitha molesta Busck.) took place in four generations (one overwintering and three summer generations). The seasonal dynamics of the flight of peach twig borer (Anarsia lineatella Zell.) took place with three peaks, which indicates the development of three generations of the pest. Insecticide trials in the control of oriental fruit moth and peach twig borer in peach orchards allowed to determine that the level of damage to shoots and fruits of the studied peach cultivars by caterpillars of Lepidoptera pests decreased by 4.3—11.3 times compared to the control variant. High technical efficiency was observed when using Lufox 105 EC (1.0 l/ ha) and Match 050 EC (1.0 l/ha) insecticides — 88.0—91.2% and 84.5—88.2%. Use of Radiant 120 SC (0.5 l/ ha) and Proclaim 5 SG, (0.5 kg/ha) provided a reduction in the harmfulness of oriental fruit moth and peach twig borer by 76.5—83.3% and 80.0—86.1% compared to the control.
 Conclusions. Evaluation of the effectiveness of insecticide application in peach orchards showed that all preparations can effectively control the number and harmfulness of oriental fruit moth and peach twig borer in peach orchards in Southern Ukraine. Under the conditions of registration of insecticides Lufox 105 EC, Match 050 EC and Radiant 120, SC can be recommended to protect plantations of this crop.

Development of biological control of oriental fruit moth and insect immune response induced by entomopathogenic fungi

The oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck) is a key pest of tree fruit of Europe, Asia, America, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, which makes a big damage to apple trees, pear tree and the stone fruit of the peach, plum, apricot, nectarine, cherry and so on. It is difficult to control these pests with traditional chemical methods meanwhile with the increasing demand for food safety, biological control method to this pest has attracted more and more people's attentions. Beauveria bassiana is one of the most studied and applied entomopathogenic fungi, can infected and kill the oriental fruit moth as a biological control agent. The entomopathogenic fungi with a wide range hosts and they are harmless to the environment, human and animal. Using entomopathogenic fungi to control pests has many advantages and they have been an important part in biological control of pests, although it still has some natural defects, such as long effective time and easy to be affected by environmental conditions. In order to make good use of it in the future, it is necessary to deeply understand their living conditions and infection mechanism to insects. Entomopathogenic fungi can invades the insects from the body wall through contact directly, but also can through the digestive tract, stomata and wounds and other ways into the insect body. But insects have evolved a strong innate immune system to protect themselves from infection by the pathogens and adverse conditions. When insects are infected by entomopathogenic fungi, their innate immune system will firstly be activated. And the insects will resist the infection by their immune response, which will lead to the reduction of infection efficiency and the control effect. So, it is necessary to study the immune response of insects introduced by entomopathogenic fungi, and it is a hotspot in pest control. This article summarized the occurrence and control technologies of oriental fruit moth, and the research status of entomopathogenic fungus (B. bassiana), finally it summarized the insect immune response induced by entomopathogenic fungi. This will provide a significantly deepened the understanding on mechanisms of insect and entomopathogenic fungi. And it prospected the improvement of effective on biological control of oriental fruit moth by B. bassiana, which provide a theoretical basis for supply better services to plant protection in the future.

Morphological differences of the reproductive system could be used to predict the optimum Grapholita molesta (Busck) control period

The oriental fruit moth (OFM), Grapholita molesta (Busck), is one of the dominant fruit-boring pests worldwide. In order to conduct integrated control of OFM effectively, it is important to predict the optimum control period. OFM populations have been monitored either by the number of trapped male moths exposed to sex pheromones or by the number of trapped male and female moths using food traps in orchards. The mating status and development stage of the trapped moths have not been characterized. The present paper studies the anatomical morphology of the OFM reproductive system at different development periods. The results revealed that OFM ovarian development can be divided into six stages. The average daily fecundity of OFM had an excellent positive correlation (r = 0.86) with the percentages of OFM in the egg maturation & oviposition stage, which could be used as an indicator in field population prediction work. There were obvious differences in the morphology of the corpus bursa and the heavy muscular area of the ductus ejaculatorius simplex before and after mating, and these differences could be used to increase the accuracy in predicting the optimum OFM control period.

Control of Cydia molesta (Busck) by mating disruption using Isomate-M pheromone dispensers in Northern Greece

Trials were carried out in 1986 and 1987 with the mating disruption method for the control of oriental fruit moth (Cydia molesta Busck) in peaches of Northern Greece. One or two applications during April-September of the synthetic pheromone lsomate-M, at a rate of 1,000 units per ha, resulted in a 100% prevention of captures in pheromone traps in all trials, with fruit damage ranging from 0.1-2.0%. Damage in the conventionally sprayed treatments was 0.3-2.4% while infestation in the unsprayed plots reached 6-17%. The encouraging results, especially when taking into account the relatively small size of the orchards, opens opportunities for the integrated control of this peach insect pest under the condi­tions of Northern Greece.

Simultaneous control of Cydia molesta and Anarsia lineatella in peach orchards of Northern Greece by combining mating disruption and insecticide treatments

Trials were carried out in 1987 and 1988 on the combined control of oriental fruit moth (OFM), Cydia molesta (Busck), and peach twig borer (PTB), Anarsia lineatella (Zell), in peach orchards in Northern Greece with Isomate-M pheromone dispensers (mating disruption technique) and insecticides against OFM and PTB, respectively. One application of the Isomate-M at a rate of 1,000 units per ha, and one application of the insect growth inhibitor (IGI) hexaflumuron 5 EC (200 ml f.p,/hl) or two sprays of fluvalinate 25 AF (60 ml f.p./hl) during June provided satisfactory control of OFM and PTB. Total damage per tree in the trials reached 1.0-3.6%, versus 1.4-3.0% in the conventionally sprayed orchards, while in unsprayed control blocks it was 14.4-23k. These encouraging results open possibilities for the combined control of these peach insects in Northern Greece.

CONTROL OF ORIENTAL FRUIT MOTH CYDIA MOLESTA AND PEACH TWIG BORER ANARSIA LINEATELLA BY USING PHEROMONE DISPENSERS IN BULGARIA

Oriental fruit moth (OFM), Cydia molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) and peach twig borer (PTB) Anarsia lineatella (Zell) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) are economically important pests of peach, nectarine and apricot in Bulgaria. Their larvae cause damage, infesting shoots and fruits. Investigations were carried out in two fruit-bearing commercial peach orchards in South-East Bulgaria in the Sliven district during the period 2014 -2016. The aim of this study was to test the effectiveness of mating disruption (MD) in control of pests in peach orchards, using CIDETRAK® OFM (Oriental Fruit Moth)/ PTB (peach twig borer) and CIDETRAK® OFM/PTB MESO dispensers. The damage to shoots was evaluated during the first generation of OFM and PTB on 20 trees, randomly selected within the central area of each block. Correspondingly, fruit damage was recorded on 100 fruits per each selected tree; so, 2000 fruits were inspected for damage from both pests in each block. The rate of damaged fruits in the trial plots were compared with that in the reference orchard, located in the vicinity, treated with conventional pesticides. CIDETRAK® OFM/PTB (@400 dispensers/ha) and CIDETRAK® OFM/PTB MESO (@80 and 20 dispensers/ha) completely inhibited C. molesta in the pheromone traps installed in the trial plots, indicating a high level of disruption. The percentage of shoots infested by OFM and PTB larvae was 0% in the MD plots, and the damage rate to fruits was rather low (>1%). The present results do confirm that mating disruption, using CIDETRAK® OFM/PTB and CIDETRAK® OFM/PTB MESO dispensers, can provide a more effective control of both important pests on peach - oriental fruit moth and peach twig borer. The use rate of CIDETRAK® OFM/PTB and CIDETRAK® OFM/PTB MESO dispensers shows that the reduced rate of dispensers does not affect the effectiveness of mating disruption and will help the growers to decrease labour in the field. Applications of these dispensers can provide effective control of oriental fruit moth and peach twig borer, than the conventional protection programmes employed in Bulgaria. This approach to controlling oriental fruit moth and peach twig borer is in line with the recent EU recommendations that emphasize the preservation of the natural environment and production of healthy fruits, with no pesticide residues

Sex-Pheromone-Mediated Mating Disruption Technology for the Oriental Fruit Moth,Grapholita molesta(Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae): Overview and Prospects

A great deal of progress has been made over the last three decades in research on pheromone-mediated mating disruption technology for the oriental fruit moth,Grapholita molesta(Busck). Pheromones can interrupt normal orientation, and the most likely mechanism of pheromone disruption, competitive-attraction (false-plume following), invokes competition between point sources of pheromone formulation and females for males. This technology, performed by broadcasting pheromones into orchards to disrupt mate finding, has been successfully implemented in oriental fruit moth control. Reservoir-style dispensers made of polyethylene tubes, which release pheromone throughout the full growing season, are the current industry standard. Although reasonably effective, they require labor-intensive hand application. Recently, a new formulation, paraffin wax, which maximizes competition between point sources of synthetic pheromone and feral females for males, was shown to have high disruption performance. As this formulation is highly effective, inexpensive, and easy to produce, further study and development are advisable. Increased understanding of the principles of mating disruption will aid in the design of more effective dispensers. Continued research is needed to meet grower concerns with regard to risk, efficacy, and cost and to identify other semiochemicals that can be applied to this delivery system. Greater knowledge of the integration of different biological control methods is therefore essential.

Toxicity of Thiamethoxam and Mixtures of Chlorantraniliprole Plus Acetamiprid, Esfenvalerate, or Thiamethoxam to Neonates of Oriental Fruit Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

To assess the toxicity ofthiamethoxam and three mixtures of insecticides to oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), we added the insecticides to diet and fed it to neonates of two laboratory colonies; mortality was assessed after 96 h. Thiamethoxam was much less toxic than insecticides previously tested. Five of six analyses of the joint action of chlorantraniliprole plus acetamiprid, esfenvalerate, or thiamethoxam indicated that toxicity was not independent and not correlated. For chlorantraniliprole plus acetamiprid, mortality was slightly lower than expected at low concentrations and greater than expected at high concentrations. For chlorantraniliprole plus esfenvalerate, mortality was less than expected at nearly all concentrations, suggesting antagonism despite the two compounds' different modes of action. For chlorantraniliprole plus thiamethoxam, observed mortality exceeded expected mortality at low concentrations, but this trend did not continue at higher concentrations. Although the null hypothesis of independent and uncorrelated toxicity was rejected for chlorantraniliprole plus acetamiprid and chlorantraniliprole plus thiamethoxam in three of four analyses, differences between observed and expected mortality were minor and inconsistent over the range of concentrations tested. We do not expect these mixtures to exhibit significant synergism or antagonism in the field. Apparent antagonism between chlorantraniliprole and esfenvalerate is particularly relevant because these insecticides (or chlorantraniliprole plus a different pyrethroid) may be used together in apples or peaches for control of oriental fruit moth and hemipteran pests. The effectiveness of each insecticide against oriental fruit moth might be reduced in such applications.

This study was performed to estimate the efficacy of three commercial mating disruptors for the control of oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck), using a food-baited trap to collect field females. Mated female ratios estimated in the mating disruptor-treated areas were compared with the estimates of male trap captures, and both estimates were evaluated on the basis of crop damage measured by shoot tip damage caused by G. molesta. Both males and females were attracted to the food trap-baited with terpinyl acetate in apple orchard. Spermatophore of G. molesta was similar to female bursa copulatrix in size. Though there was more than 95% reduction in male trap captures indicating significant mating disruption, significant crop damage occurred on apple leaf buds, in which more than 35% of captured females were mated. This study demonstrates that assessment of the mated females would be more reasonable to represent the efficacy of mating disruptor(s) than the assessment of the male captures in G. molesta.

Evaluation of hydrophobic and hydrophilic kaolin particle films for peach crop, arthropod and disease management

Hydrophobic and/or hydrophilic kaolin particle film treatments to peach (Prunus persica (L) Batsch) trees were evaluated for crop and pest management capabilities in six studies from 1997 to 2000. Unsprayed control and standard treatments, the latter consisting of a commercial pesticide program, were included for comparison. Treatments in initial studies were applied via handgun, which resulted in a uniform and heavy deposit of kaolin after the first application. In contrast, treatments in subsequent studies used airblast equipment, which provided a uniform but less dense coverage, even after multiple applications. Results showed that both formulations of kaolin provided control of oriental fruit moth (Grapholita molesta (Busck)), plum curculio (Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst)) and Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica Newman) that was comparable with or better than the standard pesticide program. Effective management of late season catfacing insects (tarnished plant bugs Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) and stinkbugs Acrosternum hilare (Say), Euschistus servus (Say), and E tristigmus (Say)) and leafrollers (undetermined species) was also observed, although kaolin applications significantly increased phytophagous mite (Panonychus ulmi (Koch)) levels. In contrast to arthropod management, kaolin failed to control either peach scab (Cladosporium carpophilum (Von Thumen)) or rusty spot (Podosphaera leucotricha (Ell and Ev) ES Salmon) in any of the 4 years of the study. However, hydrophobic kaolin provided effective brown rot (Monilinia fructicola (G Winter) Honey) control when applied via handgun, and partial control when applied via airblast; hydrophilic kaolin failed to provide any control. These results suggest that hydrophobicity and deposit density may be important factors for effective disease management. The application of kaolin significantly delayed fruit maturation, increased fruit size and increased soluble solids relative to the standard. This effect, attributed to a reduction in plant stress, also resulted in increased fruit number and yield on young trees, indicating that an accentuated beneficial response from kaolin applications may be possible.

The phenology of oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck), on apple (Malus spp.) in North Carolina was studied using pheromone traps and egg sampling in abandoned and commercial orchards in 2000 and 2001, with subsequent development of an oviposition degree-day model and management studies in relation to codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), phenology. Oriental fruit moth eggs were found in greater numbers on leaves early and on fruit later in the growing season, on the top versus the bottom of the leaf surface, and on the calyx area versus the side or stem end of the fruit. A degree-day (DD) model to predict oriental fruit moth oviposition was developed based on temperature accumulations from peak moth trap capture of the first (overwintering) generation, by using 7.2 and 32.2°C as the temperature limits. The model predicted four ovipositing generations of oriental fruit moth with the second beginning 507 DD after peak moth catch. Using predictions of the oriental fruit moth and codling moth degree-day oviposition models, an experiment was conducted to determine the level of second generation oriental fruit moth control with methoxyfenozide applied under different scenarios for first generation codling moth. Methoxyfenozide was equally effective in managing codling moth and oriental fruit moth for all treatment timings.

Comparison of a sprayable pheromone formulation and two hand-applied pheromone dispensers foruse in the integrated control of oriental fruit moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae).

The efficacy of integrated programs using a sprayable pheromone formulation or one of two hand-applied pheromone dispensers, and a conventional oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) control program, was compared using 4-5-ha blocks of peach orchard at three Niagara Peninsula farms during 2000-2002. In the integrated programs, chlorpyrifos and mating disruption with 3M Sprayable Pheromone, Isomate OFM Rosso, or Rak 5 hand-applied dispensers were used to control first-generation larvae, and mating disruption alone was used to control second- and third-generation larvae. In the conventional program, chlorpyrifos was used to control first-generation larvae, and pyrethroid insecticides were used to control larvae of the later generations. All programs were effective at maintaining fruit infestation by G. molesta below the industry tolerance level of 1%. An integrated program using sprayable pheromone required the use of more supplementary insecticide applications to control second- and third-generation larvae than a program using hand-applied dispensers. The elimination of insecticide sprays from integrated program blocks did not result in an increase in damage by plant bugs, Lygus spp. (Hemiptera: Miridae) or by the plum curculio, Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Mating disruption barriers in pome fruit for improved control of oriental fruit moth Grapholita molesta Busck (Lep., Tortricidae) in stone fruit under mating disruption

Abstract:Oriental fruit moth (OFM) Grapholita molesta Busck (Lep., Tortricidae) is a very important pest in commercial orchards in Victoria, Australia. Pheromone‐mediated mating disruption (MD) applied in stone fruit orchards successfully controlled OFM populations for many years, but damage to shoot tips and fruit at the edge of peach blocks located adjacent to pear blocks under insecticide treatments has become problematic. To improve protection of stone fruit against edge damage and outbreaks of OFM, all orchards were treated with sex pheromone dispensers for MD on an area‐wide basis. Area‐wide MD treatment, including all pome and stone fruit orchards in a discrete area, successfully controlled edge infestations of OFM, but was expensive. To reduce the cost of OFM control, sex pheromone dispensers for MD were applied as barrier treatments to 54–60 m of neighbouring pears adjacent to peaches under MD. Detailed monitoring of the OFM population, shoot tip and fruit damage assessments indicated that application of MD barriers on pears during two consecutive seasons provided sufficient control of OFM on peaches. This MD barrier treatment was able to reduce the number of OFM caught in all experimental peach blocks, with damage to shoot tips and fruit giving similar results to MD treatment of the whole neighbouring pear block. Extending the MD treatment area for 54–60 m into the neighbouring pear block significantly reduced the edge damage in MD‐treated peaches in the first season and almost eliminated OFM damage in the second season.

Integrated control of oriental fruit moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in peach orchards using insecticide and mating disruption.

The efficacy of an integrated and a conventional oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck), control program was compared using 4-ha blocks of peach at three Niagara Peninsula farms during 1997-1999. In the integrated program, chlorpyrifos was used to control first-generation larvae and mating disruption using Isomate M100 pheromone dispensers was used to control the second and third generations. In the conventional program, chlorpyrifos was used to control first-generation larvae and pyrethroids were used to control larvae of the later generations. The average release rate of pheromone was 23.7-26.4 mg/ha/h over a period of 86-91 d. The pheromone treatment reduced the capture of moths in pheromone-baited traps on average by 98%, suggesting a high level of disruption. The integrated program provided control of oriental fruit moth similar to the control provided by a conventional program. The mean percentage of peach shoots infested with first- and second-generation larvae, and fruit infested with third-generation larvae was not significantly greater in the integrated-program blocks during the 3-yr study. The elimination of insecticide sprays from the integrated-program blocks did not result in an increase in damage caused by plant bugs. The incidence of damage caused by other pests was negligible in both the integrated and conventional blocks.

CONTROL OF ORIENTAL FRUIT MOTH BY MATING DISRUPTION USING SEX PHEROMONE IN THE NIAGARA PENINSULA, ONTARIO

AbstractDisruption of mating for control of Oriental fruit moth [Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)] using Isomate M pheromone dispensers was tested from 1987 to 1990 in the Niagara Peninsula of Ontario. The effectiveness of pheromone was evaluated using virgin female-baited traps, synthetic pheromone-baited traps, and by inspecting samples of twigs and fruit for evidence of G. molesta damage. No males were caught in virgin female-baited traps placed in pheromone-treated plots. Synthetic pheromone-baited trap catches of male moths were reduced by 85–100%. Pheromone provided commercially acceptable control over two consecutive growing seasons at a commercial farm with a relatively low density G. molesta population. Pheromone did not provide commercially acceptable control at an experimental farm with a relatively high density G. molesta population. The incidence of capture of males in virgin female-baited traps, in synthetic pheromone-baited traps, and the incidence of damage to peach twigs by first- and second-generation G. molesta larvae could not be used to predict the incidence of damage to fruit at harvest. The results suggest that pheromone-mediated mating disruption may have potential as a method for controlling the Oriental fruit moth in orchards with relatively low density populations.

Influence of tree growth on spray chemical deposits on peach leaves

SUMMARYA 50–fold increase in peach tree growth over a 98-day spraying season resulted in a 64 and 96% reduction in nigrosine dye deposit in the periphery and centre of the tree, respectively. Drift from spraying of adjacent rows made a significant contribution (18–39%) to the total chemical deposit in the tree periphery in four of six applications. Drift between rows was not a factor in centre tree deposit, except for a 38% contribution in the initial application. A variable reduced application rate of methyl parathion, calculated using a regression equation, resulted in a more uniform deposit throughout the season than a full application rate, providing comparable control of Oriental fruit moth withc. 50% less insecticide.
