China's coastal waters, including the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the South China Sea, are rich in marine resources and of strategic importance to the nation’s economic development. However, in recent years, the problem of water safety caused by algae and algal toxins is becoming more and more serious, with the frequency and scale of harmful algal blooms are escalating in China's coastal waters. This dataset collected and organized the survey data of toxic and harmful microalgae and algal toxins in China's coastal waters from 2019 to 2021, containing 3,429 entries of microalgae data, 33,240 entries of microalgae molecular species data, 489 entries of phytoplankton algal toxin data, 76 entries of seawater algal toxin data and 440 entries of economic species algal toxin data. The research teams providing the data ensured the accuracy of the test data through rigorous inter-project and international collation efforts. In order to display the distribution of toxic and harmful microalgae and algal toxins in China's coastal waters, we included 115 microalgae distribution maps and 29 algal toxin distribution maps in the dataset. This dataset can provide data support for studying the spatial and temporal distribution of toxic and harmful microalgae and algal toxins in China's coastal waters, and offers valuable data support for the prevention, warning and control of harmful algal blooms.

AquaNutriOpt: Optimizing nutrients for controlling harmful algal blooms in Python—A case study of Lake Okeechobee

We present AquaNutriOpt, a user-friendly Python package designed to tackle a complex combinatorial optimization problem aimed at optimizing nutrient management for the control of harmful algal blooms. This optimization process involves the identification of optimal Best Management Practices (BMPs) and Treatment Technologies (TTs). AquaNutriOpt is constructed based on a novel integer programming model, which we present in this paper. The package can accommodate various user inputs, automatically transforming them into an optimization model, and then solving it using a free solver. To demonstrate AquaNutriOpt’s efficacy, we conduct a series of experiments on two watersheds around Lake Okeechobee in Florida, USA. These experiments illustrate that the optimal BMPs/TTs obtained by AquaNutriOpt can significantly reduce Phosphorus loads into the lake across various budget scenarios. We validate the results by running simulations with the process-based Watershed Assessment Model (WAM), confirming that the estimated percentage reductions closely align with the reports from WAM.

A laboratory study of the increasing competitiveness of Karenia mikimotoi under rising CO2 scenario

Ocean acidification (OA) driven by elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) levels is expected to disturb marine ecological processes, including the formation and control of harmful algal blooms (HABs). In this study, the effects of rising CO2 on the allelopathic effects of macroalgae Ulva pertusa to a toxic dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi were investigated. It was found that high level of CO2 (1000 ppmv) promoted the competitive growth of K. mikimotoi compared to the group of present ambient CO2 level (420ppmv), with the number of algal cell increased from 32.2 × 104 cells/mL to 36.75 × 104 cells/mL after 96 h mono-culture. Additionally, rising CO2 level weakened allelopathic effects of U. pertusa on K. mikimotoi, as demonstrated by the decreased inhibition rate (50.6 % under the original condition VS 34.3 % under the acidified condition after 96 h co-culture) and the decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, antioxidant enzymes activity (superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR) and catalase (CAT) and non-enzymatic antioxidants (glutathione (GSH) and ascorbic acid (ascorbate, vitamin C). Indicators for cell apoptosis of K. mikimotoi including decreased caspase-3 and -9 protease activity were observed when the co-cultured systems were under rising CO2 exposure. Furthermore, high CO2 level disturbed fatty acid synthesis in U. pertusa and significantly decreased the contents of fatty acids with allelopathy, resulting in the allelopathy weakening of U. pertusa. Collectively, rising CO2 level promoted the growth of K. mikimotoi and weakened allelopathic effects of U. pertusa on K. mikimotoi, indicating the increased difficulties in controlling K. mikimotoi using macroalgae in the future.

Transcriptome analysis of the bloom-forming dinoflagellate Prorocentrum donghaiense exposed to Ginkgo biloba leaf extract, with an emphasis on photosynthesis.

Ginkgo biloba leaf extract (GBE) can effectively treat bloom-forming freshwater algae. However, there is limited information about the underlying suppression mechanism of the marine bloom-forming Prorocentrum donghaiense-the most dominant algal bloom species in the East China Sea. We investigated the effect of GBE on P. donghaiense in terms of its response to photosynthesis at the molecular/omic level. In total, 93,743 unigenes were annotated using six functional databases. Furthermore, 67,203 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in algae treated with 1.8 g∙L-1 GBE. Among these DEGs, we identified the genes involved in photosynthesis. PsbA, PsbB and PsbD in photosystem II, PsaA in photosystem I, and PetB and PetD in the cytochrome b6/f complex were downregulated. Other related genes, such as PsaC, PsaE, and PsaF in photosystem I; PetA in the cytochrome b6/f complex; and atpA, atpD, atpH, atpG, and atpE in the F-type H+-ATPase were upregulated. These results suggest that the structure and activity of the complexes were destroyed by GBE, thereby inhibiting the electron flow between the primary and secondary quinone electron acceptors, primary quinone electron acceptor, and oxygen-evolving complex in the PSII complex, and interrupting the electron flow between PSII and PSI, ultimately leading to a decline in algal cell photosynthesis. These findings provide a basis for understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying P. donghaiense exposure to GBE and a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of harmful algal blooms.

Single-atom Mn-embedded carbon nitride as highly efficient peroxymonosulfate catalyst for the harmful algal blooms control

In recent years, water quality deterioration caused by harmful algal blooms (HABs) has become one of the global drinking water safety issues, and sulfate radical driven heterogeneous advanced oxidation technology has been widely used for algae removal. However, the shortages of low active site exposure, metal leaching, and secondary contamination limit its further application. Therefore, the single-atom Mn anchored on inorganic carbon nitride was constructed to enhance the oxidation and coagulation of algal cells while maintaining cell integrity in this study. The removal efficiency of Microcystis aeruginosa was as high as 100 % within 30 min under the optimal conditions of 400 mg/L single-atom Mn-embedded g-C3N4 (SA-MCN) and 0.32 mM peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Importantly, the K+ release, malondialdehyde concentration, floccules morphology and variation of algal organic matters further showed that the algal cells still maintained high integrity without severe rupture during the catalytic reaction. Furthermore, the catalytic mechanisms of algae removal by moderate oxidation and simultaneous coagulation in this system were explored by quenching experiments, EPR analysis, theoretical calculation, and Zeta potential. In brief, this study highlighted the single-atom heterogeneous catalyst with high-efficiency and environmental-friendliness in harmful algal blooms control.

A Digital Twin Lake Framework for Monitoring and Management of Harmful Algal Blooms.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by lake eutrophication and climate change have become one of the most serious problems for the global water environment. Timely and comprehensive data on HABs are essential for their scientific management, a need unmet by traditional methods. This study constructed a novel digital twin lake framework (DTLF) aiming to integrate, represent and analyze multi-source monitoring data on HABs and water quality, so as to support the prevention and control of HABs. In this framework, different from traditional research, browser-based front ends were used to execute the video-based HAB monitoring process, and real-time monitoring in the real sense was realized. On this basis, multi-source monitored results of HABs and water quality were integrated and displayed in the constructed DTLF, and information on HABs and water quality can be grasped comprehensively, visualized realistically and analyzed precisely. Experimental results demonstrate the satisfying frequency of video-based HAB monitoring (once per second) and the valuable results of multi-source data integration and analysis for HAB management. This study demonstrated the high value of the constructed DTLF in accurate monitoring and scientific management of HABs in lakes.

Development of a collaborative framework for quantitative monitoring and accumulation prediction of harmful algal blooms in nearshore areas of lakes

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in lakes have been a salient problem of global water environment due to their harmful impacts. Present situation and future tendency of HABs in nearshore areas are more important than those in other areas of lakes, but traditional researches generally ignored this point. This study developed a novel framework aiming to timely and accurately grasp both present conditions and accumulation risks of HABs in nearshore areas of lakes. By designing a quantitative monitoring method, land-based video monitoring devices around lakes were used to obtain present situation of HABs in nearshore areas rapidly, periodically and automatically. On this basis, a coupled simulation model was established to predict accumulation risks of HABs in nearshore areas using five indexes, i.e., shoreline index, chlorophyll-a index, algal bloom index, wind direction index and dynamic index. Experimental results indicated that the accuracy of HAB monitoring in nearshore areas is quite satisfying (85.20%) and the prediction results of HABs accumulation in nearshore areas is reasonable and credible. This study demonstrated a high value of the developed collaborative framework in emergency prevention and control of HABs in lakes.

Salt tide affecting algae-laden micropolluted surface water treatment and membrane performance based on BDD electro-oxidation coupled with ceramic membrane process

Harmful algal blooms pose an emerging threat to freshwater ecological security and human health, necessitating further study in offshore areas. In this work, boron-doped diamond electro-oxidation (BDD/EO) coupled with a ceramic membrane filtration was employed aiming to assess the salt tide affecting algae-laden water treatment involving with various natural organic matters (e.g., HA, SA, and BSA). The results have demonstrated that BDD/EO remove chlorophyll from the algae-laden water effectively due to the inactivation of algal cells. Moreover, considering the influence of salt tide, NH3–N would be mainly oxidized through the in-situ generated active chlorine at the electrode-liquid interface. In addition, in three kinds of salt tide affecting algae-laden water, TOC content in BSA group was decreasing remarkably after BDD/EO with TOC removal efficiency above 80%; while those in HA and SA groups had no obvious reducing due to the more algae cells breakage synchronous with HA and SA removal. Based on the fluorescent characteristics and particle size distribution, the generated small molecular organics after electro-oxidation might raise the pore blockage probability and the hydrophobic organic and fluorescent substances were preferentially oxidized in BDD/EO process being beneficial to reducing membrane fouling. Besides, the membrane special flux in three groups were decreasing significantly and the irreversible fouling resistance in SA group accounted for a larger proportion of the total resistance than those of HA and BSA. At last, in BDD/EO-CM process, macromolecular substances degradation rate was greater than that of small molecules based on the molecular weight distribution in three groups of salt tide affected algae-laden water treatment. In a word, this work provides effective and innovative strategies for the harmful algal bloom control and contributes interesting insights of membrane fouling performance of electrochemical coupled ultrafiltration membrane process.

Nanoparticles, an Emerging Control Method for Harmful Algal Blooms: Current Technologies, Challenges, and Perspectives.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a global concern because they harm aquatic ecosystems and pose a risk to human health. Various physical, chemical, and biological approaches have been explored to control HABs. However, these methods have limitations in terms of cost, environmental impact, and effectiveness, particularly for large water bodies. Recently, the use of nanoparticles has emerged as a promising strategy for controlling HABs. Briefly, nanoparticles can act as anti-algae agents via several mechanisms, including photocatalysis, flocculation, oxidation, adsorption, and nutrient recovery. Compared with traditional methods, nanoparticle-based approaches offer advantages in terms of environmental friendliness, effectiveness, and specificity. However, the challenges and risks associated with nanoparticles, such as their toxicity and ecological impact, must be considered. In this review, we summarize recent research progress concerning the use of nanoparticles to control HABs, compare the advantages and disadvantages of different types of nanoparticles, discuss the factors influencing their effectiveness and environmental impact, and suggest future directions for research and development in this field. Additionally, we explore the causes of algal blooms, their harmful effects, and various treatment methods, including restricting eutrophication, biological control, and disrupting living conditions. The potential of photocatalysis for generating reactive oxygen species and nutrient control methods using nanomaterials are also discussed in detail. Moreover, the application of flocculants/coagulants for algal removal is highlighted, along with the challenges and potential solutions associated with their use. This comprehensive overview aims to contribute to the development of efficient and sustainable strategies for controlling HAB control.

3D Monolayer Silanation of Porous Structure Facilitating Multi-Phase Pollutants Removal.

Activated carbon (AC) is widely used to removing hazardous pollutantsfrom air and water, owing to its exceptional adsorption properties. However, the high affinity of water molecules with the surface oxygen-containing functional groups can adversely affect the adsorption performance of AC. In this study, a facile and efficient method is presented for fabrication of hydrophobicAC through surface monolayer silanation. Compared to initialAC, the hydrophobicAC improves thewater contact angle from 29.7°to 123.5°while maintaining high specific surface area and enhances the removal capacity of multi-phase pollutants (emulsified oiland toluene).Additionally, the hydrophobicAC exhibits excellent adsorption capabilityto harmful algal bloom species (Chlorella) (97.56%) and algal organic matter(AOM)(96.23%) owing to electrostatic interactionsand surface hydrophobicity.Thestudy demonstrates that this method of surface monolayer silanation can effectively weaken the effect of water molecules on AC adsorption capacity, which has significant potential for practical use in air and water purification, as well as in the control of harmful algal blooms.

Identification of a Bacillus thuringiensis Q1 compound with algicidal activity

Bacillus thuringiensis Q1, isolated from the eutrophic waters of the Haihe River in Tianjin, possesses remarkable algae dissolving character. We determined the lytic effect of B. thuringiensis Q1 fermentation broth, and it proved to be pH- and temperature-stable. Then, we investigated the structure of the algicidal compound by high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and identified as purine-derived C12H15O5N5. To further understand B. thuringiensis Q1, we performed genome sequencing and analysis. The genome was 5341610 bp, with 35.31% GC content. Some elements involved in algicidal activity, such as quorum sensing pathway and ABC transporter were predicted. Our results reveal that B. thuringiensis Q1 can be used for biological control of harmful algal blooms.

Efficient inactivation of harmful algae K. mikimotoi by a novel algicidal bacterium via a rare direct contact pathway: Performances and mechanisms

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by Karenia mikimotoi have posed great threats to marine ecosystems, and algal inactivation by symbiotic bacteria has been recognized as environmental benign methods for controlling HABs. However, the identified algicidal bacteria for K. mikimotoi is limited and exclusively based on indirect algicidal pathways, which may cause secondary pollution due to releasing toxic algicidal agents. In this study, a novel strain of algicidal bacteria Tenacibaculum sp. GD3 was isolated from the phycosphere of K. mikimotoi. The bacterial strain GD3 could achieve 92.6 % of inactivation efficiency against K. mikimotoi within 8 h of co-culturing period, which outperformed those in existing literatures reported so far. The algicidal mechanisms were revealed to be a rare direct cell-to-cell contact pathway, and the GD3 could grow by utilizing metabolites from K. mikimotoi, exhibiting excellent bacterial adaptability in the phycosphere. Cell morphology changes were monitored by live cell imaging system combined with SEM and TEM observations, which showed that the GD3 was first attached to the algal cell membrane, followed by lipid peroxidation and lysis of membrane protein. Oxidative stress responses were induced as reveled by up-regulation of intracellular ROSs and antioxidant enzyme activity. Photosynthetic parameters including rETRmax, Fv/Fm, YII and NPQ were reduced, and expression of functional genes involved in decomposition of chlorophyll and cell wall was significantly suppressed. Moreover, the intracellular release profile and acute toxicity assessment indicated that the GD3 could also detoxify the K. mikimotoi cultures and the released biomolecules would not cause adverse effect to marine environment. This study not only provides a novel algicidal bacterium against K. mikimotoi via a rare direct mode, but also helps to better understand the algicidal mechanisms at physiological and genetic level, thus moving forward the areas of HABs control by microbiological strategies.

Applications-oriented algicidal efficacy research and in-depth mechanism of a novel strain Brevibacillus sp. on Microcystis aeruginosa

The utilization of algicidal bacteria for the control of harmful algal blooms (HABs) is a promising technology for ecological remediation. In our most recent publication, a novel strain of Brevibacillus sp. was isolated and proved to have significant algicidal activity and stability against Microcystis aeruginosa. In order to verify the algicidal effect of the strain in the practical application scenario, the algicidal efficacy of Brevibacillus sp. under conditions close to water in the environment was investigated. Results indicated that the algicidal threshold of Brevibacillus sp. culture was 3‰ inoculation concentration, and the removal rate of M. aeruginosa reached 100%. The process of Chl-a degradation followed a first-order kinetic model, which could be used to predict the degradation effect of M. aeruginosa in practical applications. Additionally, the inoculation of Brevibacillus sp. culture introduced additional nutrients, some of which remained in the water. Furthermore, the algicidal substances demonstrated good sustainability, with a removal rate of up to 78.53% at 144 h after three repeated uses. At 12 h, the algicidal substances caused a 78.65% increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) content in M. aeruginosa compared to the control group, thereby triggering the antioxidant system of M. aeruginosa. Moreover, algal cell fragments were observed to aggregate. This study provides a promising direction for treating cyanobacterial blooms using algicidal bacteria in practical applications.

Influence of Seawater Characteristics on Antibiotic Pollutant Removal via Fe(II)-Peroxymonosulfate-Modified Clay

Antibiotics have been identified as emerging pollutants, and they increasingly threaten the safety of mariculture; thus, effective treatment methods are urgently needed. In this study, Fe(II)-peroxymonosulfate-modified clay (Fe-PMS-MC), an effective mineral complex for harmful algal bloom control, was tested for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal from seawater. The results showed that SMX removal efficiency increased gradually from 42.3% to 100% in seawater in 6 h as the Fe-PMS-MC dose increased from 0.1 g/L to 1.0 g/L; this removal was more efficient than that in freshwater. Both an increase in temperature and the addition of inorganic anions such as Cl−, HCO3−, and SO42− improved the SMX removal efficiency; in contrast, there was no noticeable influence of a pH change from 3.0 to 9.0 or of Heterosigma akashiwo biomass addition from 103 cells/mL to 105 cells/mL. Oxidation was the main mechanism for the removal of SMX by Fe-PMS-MC treatment, and the mechanisms included radical oxidation and non-radical oxidation. PMS was the key component in Fe-PMS-MC for the production of radicals, which increased with temperature. Similarly, both radical oxidation and non-radical oxidation increased when PMS was attacked by Cl−, HCO3−, and SO42− in seawater.

Selenite-Catalyzed Reaction between Benzoquinone and Acetylacetone Deciphered the Enhanced Inhibition on Microcystis aeruginosa Growth.

The coexistence of selenite (Se(IV)) and acetylacetone (AA) generated a synergistic effect on the growth inhibition of a bloom-forming cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa. The mechanism behind this phenomenon is of great significance in the control of harmful algal blooms. To elucidate the role of Se(IV) in this effect, the reactions in ternary solutions composed of Se(IV), AA (or two other similar hydrogen donors), and quinones, especially benzoquinone (BQ), were investigated. The transformation kinetic results demonstrate that Se(IV) played a catalytic role in the reactions between AA (or ascorbic acid) and quinones. By comparison with five other oxyanions (sulfite, sulfate, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate) and two AA derivatives, the formation of an AA-Se(IV) complexation intermediate was confirmed as a key step in the accelerated reactions between BQ and AA. To our knowledge, this is the first report on Se(IV) as a catalyst for quinone-involved reactions. Since both quinones and Se are essential in cells and there are many other chemicals of similar electron-donating properties to that of AA, the finding here shed light on the regulation of electron transport chains in a variety of processes, especially the redox balances that are tuned by quinones and glutathione.

Isolation and characterization of algicidal bacteria from freshwater aquatic environments in China.

Algicidal bacteria can inhibit the growth of algae or lyse algal cells, thus playing roles in shaping aquatic microbial communities and maintaining the functions of aquatic ecosystems. Nevertheless, our understanding of their diversities and distributions remains limited. In this study, we collected water samples from 17 freshwater sites in 14 cities in China and screened a total of 77 algicidal bacterial strains using several prokaryotic cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae as target strains. According to their target-specificities, these strains were classified into three subgroups, cyanobacterial algicidal bacteria, algal algicidal bacteria, and broad-target algicidal bacteria, each displaying distinctive compositions and geographical distribution patterns. They are assigned to Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes bacterial phyla, of which Pseudomonas and Bacillus are the most abundant gram-negative and gram-positive genus, respectively. A number of bacterial strains, such as Inhella inkyongensis and Massilia eburnean, are suggested as new algicidal bacteria. The diverse taxonomies, algal-inhibiting abilities and distributions of these isolates have suggested that there are rich algicidal bacterial resources in these aquatic environments. Our results provide new microbial resources for algal-bacterial interaction studies, and shed new insights into how algicidal bacteria can be used in the control of harmful algal blooms, as well as in algal biotechnology.

The mitigating effects of diatom-bacteria biofilm on coastal harmful algal blooms: A lab-based study concerning species-specific competition and biofilm formation

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal areas severely affected the health of ecosystem and human beings. The HABs control by biological methods, especially for biofilms, has been research hotspots in freshwater ecosystem. However, the biofilm-relating control of HABs in marine environment was very limited. In the present study, we found the population growth of two harmful algal species, Prorocentrum obtusidens Schiller (formerly P. donghaiense Lu) and Heterosigma akashiwo, were inhibited by a diatom-bacteria biofilm. The highest inhibitory rate was 79.6 ± 2.1% for P. obtusidens when co-cultured with biofilm suspension, and was 88.6 ± 5.8% for H. akashiwo when co-cultured with the biofilm filtrate without nutrient replenishment. When nitrate and phosphate were added, the inhibition rate for P. obtusidens was 72.3 ± 2.0%, but the population inhibition was not found in H. akashiwo. It suggested that P. obtusidens was mainly inhibited via interference competition, while the inhibition of H. akashiwo was resulted from exploitation competition. We further investigated the role of fatty acids for the interference competition in P. obtusidens, and found that fatty acids at their environmental-relevance concentrations can inhibit the photosynthetic capacity of P. obtusidens, but cannot inhibit the population growth. The community of biofilm shifted, and was finally dominated by the photoheterotrophic bacterium Dinoroseobacter shibae, and the diatom Fistulifera sp. with relative abundance of higher than 90%. Our study indicated that the diatom-bacteria biofilm was likely the candidate for the HABs control in marine environment. D. shibae and Fistulifera sp. were probably the effective species in the biofilm.

Mesoporous carbon framework supported Fe-Cu-Mn oxides as an efficient peroxymonosulfate catalyst for the control of harmful algal blooms: Synergism of Fe-Cu-Mn and role of mesoporous carbon

Few studies have focused on the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on heterogeneous catalysis to control harmful algal blooms (HABs). Herein, a mesoporous carbon framework supported Fe-Cu-Mn oxides (MnFe2O4/CuO; FCMT) was synthesized via calcination of cost-effective metal-polyphenol coordination polymers for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to eliminating Microcystis aeruginosa and algal organic matters (AOMs). >99% of algae were removed at low FCMT and PMS dosages in the FCMT/PMS within 120 min. The FCMT/PMS system removed algae effectively over extensive pH (3.0–9.0) and algal density (OD680 = 0.05–0.4) ranges. Although FCMT/PMS-induced oxidative stress damaged cell membranes, over 50% of the dissolved organic carbon and 54% of microcystins were eliminated, avoiding serious secondary pollution caused by cell lysis. Algal removal by the FCMT/PMS system involved pathways associated with both free radicals and non-free radicals, with the dominant reactive oxygen species being O2− and 1O2. Synergy between Fe, Mn, and Cu promoted the elimination of algae and AOMs. Mn found to be the primary active site on the FCMT surface, while Fe(III) was cooperated with Mn by acting as the main adsorption site. The mesoporous carbon allowed uniform spatial distribution of the nanosized Fe-Cu-Mn oxides as well as modulating the direction of reactive oxygen species generation by the metals. In conclusion, the proposed heterogeneous advanced oxidation process using the FCMT/PMS system is highly potential in the control of HABs.

Efficient removal of Phaeocystis globosa from seawater with the persulfate activation by arbutin-modified cellulose nanocrystals

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) from seawater have a severe threat to human health, aquaculture, and coastal nuclear power safety. Thus, it is highly desirable to explore environmentally friendly, efficient, and economic methods for controlling HABs. Herein, the arbutin-modified cellulose nanocrystals (AT-CNC) activated persulfate (PS), as a novel heterogeneous Fenton-like process, was proposed to remove Phaeocystis globosa (P. globosa) from seawater. The AT-CNC was synthesized via the surface modification of AT on CNC. The effects of AT dosage, CNC dosage, and PS dosage on the removal performance of P. globosa were investigated. With the addition of 530 mg/L AT-CNC (6 wt% AT/CNC of AT loading) and 120 mg/L PS, the removal percentage of chlorophyll a (Rc), optical density at 680 nm (Ro) and turbidity (Rt) reached 97.7%, 91.9% and 85.2% at 24 h. According to electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra and radical quenching tests, the predominant free radicals inactivating P. globosa were hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Additionally, the flocculation of the inactivated algae cells by AT-CNC was also critical for removing P. globosa. Moreover, a positive environmental impact was achieved in the AT–CNC–PS system due to the reduction of nitrogen, phosphorus and organic carbon contents. Based on the excellent removal performance for P. globosa, we believe that the AT-CNC activated persulfate is a promising option for HABs control.

Studies on DNA fragmentation and cell integrity of rapidly hydroxyl radical inactivated Microcystis aeruginosa

Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) blooms occur frequently in freshwater lakes and reservoirs, posing a great threaten to drinking water safety. When using conventional oxidants remedy toxic algae, there is an unavoidable shortage leading to cell rupture and release of intracellular organic matter (IOM), thus causing more serious hazard to water safety. In this study, with the synergistic effect of strong ionisation discharge and hydrodynamic cavitation, hydroxyl radical (•OH) were generated and injected into cells to inactivate M. aeruginosa within 3 s. •OH-inactivated M. aeruginosa was intact without rupture and exhibited a 39 % increase in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) due to the degradation of the components of the cell wall and extracellular matrix. For comparison, ClO2 inactivated M. aeruginosa after 10 min of exposure, which induced cell rupture and a 113 % increase in DOC due to the release of IOM. Meanwhile, in •OH-inactivated M. aeruginosa, intracellular •OH was increased to 2 times according to the detection by fluorescence probe and the DNA oxidative damage biomarker 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine increased to 1.4 times according to the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, confirming the direct action of •OH on the DNA. And •OH induced DNA fragmentation in cells of M. aeruginosa was identified by comet assay and TUNEL assay, finding a 4636 % increase in the DNA tail length, and 96.71 % of the cells showed DNA phosphatediester bond cleavage. In summary, the main reason for the rapid •OH-inactivation of M. aeruginosa is DNA fragmentation, which may represent a new method for the safely and efficient control of harmful algal blooms.
