Five-phase induction motor drive-A comprehensive review

Modern Electrical Vehicles (EV) and Electric Traction rely heavily on electrical drives. Every day, electric vehicles are being improved and expanded to include commercial vehicles such as passenger vehicles, goods delivery vehicles, and agricultural vehicles. Today, researchers are concentrating on multi-phase electrical drives to improve EV technology. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the Five-Phase Induction Motor (FPIM) drive. The proposed study investigates the FPIM drive in terms of mathematical modeling and design, the different topologies of a Five-Phase Voltage Source Inverter (FPVSI) (Two-Level, Multi-Level, Matrix), the methodologies utilised to generate the pulse for FPVSI (Carrier-Based Pulse Width Modulation (CBPWM), Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM)), and the control of FPIM. This study evaluates the many strategies available in the literature for controlling the FPIM in order to assist researchers and industrial Research and Development (R&D) engineers in selecting the most suitable tool for their applications.

Field-Oriented Control of Five-Phase Induction Motor Fed From Space Vector Modulated Matrix Converter

This paper presents the field-oriented control (FOC) of a five-phase induction motor (FPIM) fed from a three-to-five phase direct matrix converter (DMC). The article focuses on the modulation and control of the three-to-five phase DMC, which discusses minimizing the problems associated with switching vector selection, sector identification, switching sequence selection, and dwell-time calculations. The DMC is controlled from the space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique, eliminating the x-y components of space vectors. Moreover, the matrix converter can perform unity power factor control at the input side. The FPIM is sourced from a DMC, and the FOC technique is applied to control the drive. The dynamic characteristics of the drive are succeeded for different loading conditions. The proposed work is simulated in Simulink/Matlab environment and further verified through practical experimentation. The control signals of the IGBTs are generated through FPGA embedded in dSPACE 1006. The experimental and the simulation results prove the practicability of the FOC to FPIM fed from a DMC.

Predictive Torque Control of Five-Phase Induction Motor Drive Using Successive Cost Functions for CMV Elimination

This article presents a predictive torque control (PTC) algorithm for a five-phase (distributed winding) induction motor fed by a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter to remove the common-mode voltage (CMV). In this approach, a finite range of 31 voltage vectors (VVs) is chosen from the total available 243 VVs for the removal of the CMV. The xy-subspace current harmonic reduction is achieved with grouped VVs. The developed PTC algorithm has two successive cost functions: g <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">1h</sub> for stator flux and electromagnetic torque regulation and g <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2h</sub> for xy-subspace current harmonic reduction. The purpose of these two successive cost functions is to reduce the complexity in determining the independent weighting factors. This algorithm retains the torque and flux responses similar to that of conventional PTC. The minimization in switching frequency is obtained in the presented PTC algorithm with the selected set of VVs. For evaluating and ascertaining the capabilities for CMV elimination and xy-subspace harmonic current reduction, the proposed algorithm is compared with the conventional PTC algorithm having a different set of VVs. Experimental outcomes show the significance of the discussed algorithm in the steady state and retain the transient operating conditions.

Direct Torque Control of Five-Phase Induction Motor With Common-Mode Voltage and Current Harmonics Reduction

This paper proposes two direct torque control (DTC) strategies to reduce the common-mode voltage (CMV) in the five-phase induction motor driven by three-level five-phase inverter. In each technique, 31 voltage vectors consisting of 30 nonzero voltage vectors, and a zero voltage vector are selected out of available 243 voltage vectors. The selection of these voltage vectors are based on their capabilities of reducing the CMV, eliminating the x–y stator flux and maintaining the torque ripple under control. The ten large, ten small, and a zero voltage vector are same in both schemes, however only difference in designing the control strategy for the two schemes is the utilization of different ten medium voltage vectors. First proposal (DTC-I) reduces the CMV to $3V_{{\rm{dc}}}\,/ 10$ and second proposal (DTC-II) reduces to $V_{{\rm{dc}}}\,/ 10$ . These schemes are compared with DTC technique of five-phase induction motor fed by two-level five-phase inverter in order to judge the capabilities of proposed schemes in context of reducing the CMV. The simulation and experimental results validate the proposed DTC techniques.

Adaptive direct torque control using Luenberger-sliding mode observer for online stator resistance estimation for five-phase induction motor drives

Direct torque control is considered as one of the variable structure control techniques which are characterized by fast response, simplicity and provide direct control of both electromagnetic torque and stator flux by adequate selection of the inverter switches in each sampling period. In case of multiphase motor drives, the increase in voltage vectors offers flexibility to optimize the selection of the inverter switching states, thereby achieving more precise control of the torque and flux. Nevertheless, the criterion for the selection of the inverter states becomes more complex. This aspect is not considered an issue in the traditional three-phase motor drives but needs to be considered in designing the switching table of the direct torque control of five-phase induction motor. Due to the auxiliary vector plane, the low-frequency harmonics need to be eliminated and full utilization of the dc link voltage is desired. The effects of parameter variation (particularly, stator resistance) on the performance of the direct torque control. It is necessary the addition of parameter adaptation algorithm to compensate this effects. A novel direct torque control of five-phase induction motor using a new switching table combined with an adaptive variable structure observer to avoid the effects of stator resistance variations is presented in this paper. Simulation results provided show the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Torque Ripple Reduction in Direct Torque Control of Five-Phase Induction Motor Using Fuzzy Controller with Optimized Voltage Vector Selection Strategy

This paper presents a torque ripple reduction method of direct torque control (DTC) using fuzzy controller with optimal selection strategy of voltage vectors in a five-phase induction motor. The conventional DTC method has some drawbacks. First, switching frequency changes according to the hysteresis bands and motor's speed. Second, the torque ripple is rapidly increased in long control period. In order to solve these problems, some/most papers have proposed torque ripple reduction methods by using the optimal duty ratio of the non-zero voltage vector. However, these methods are complicated in accordance with the parameter. If this drawback is eliminated, the torque ripple can be reduced compared with conventional method. In addition, the DTC can be simply controlled without the use of the parameter. Therefore, the proposed algorithm is changing the voltage vector insertion time by using the designed fuzzy controller. Also, the optimized voltage vector selection method is used in accordance with the torque error. Simulation and experimental results show effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

Field-oriented control of five-phase induction motor with open-end stator winding

Abstract The mathematical model of the five-phase squirrel-cage induction motor and the system of the dual five-phase voltage source inverter have been presented. The control methods and control systems of the field-oriented control of the five-phase induction motor with an open-end stator winding are described. The structures of the direct fieldoriented control system (DFOC) and the Indirect Field-oriented control system (IFOC) with PI controllers in outer and inner control loops are analyzed. A method of space vector modulation used to control the system of the dual five-phase voltage source inverter has been discussed. The results of simulation studies of the field-oriented control methods are presented. Comparative analysis of the simulation results was carried out.

Sensorless Vector Control of Five-phase Induction Motor under Open-phases Fault

—This article deals with proposed solutions for five-phase induction motor drives, specifically aimed to sensorless vector control under an open-phases fault. Exploiting the modified transformation matrices for dual planes, the motor model in the synchronous frame is established under open phases. Torque ripple is reduced by particular magnitude ratio currents. Furthermore, the third harmonic current is used to improve iron utilization and torque density. The proposed sliding-mode observer method for wide-range speed estimation combined with online resistance identification is investigated, especially for low-speed operation. Experimental tests are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Fault-Tolerant Control of Five-Phase Induction Motor Under Single-Phase Open

This paper deals with fault-tolerant control of five-phase induction motor (IM) drives under single-phase open. By exploiting a decoupled model for five-phase IM under fault, the indirect field-oriented control ensures that electromagnetic torque oscillations are reduced by particular magnitude ratio currents. The control techniques are developed by the third harmonic current injection, in order to improve electromagnetic torque density. Furthermore, Proportional Resonant (PR) regulator is adopted to realize excellent current tracking performance in the phase frame, compared with Proportional Integral (PI) and hysteresis regulators. The analysis and experimental results confirm the validity of fault-tolerant control under single-phase open.
