Coordinated control of DSTATCOM with switchable capacitor bank in a secondary radial distribution system for power factor improvement

This paper exhibits the coordinated control of 30 kVAr Distribution STATic synchronous COMpensator (DSTATCOM) with 125 kVAr Switchable Capacitor Banks for compensation of reactive power in a 750 kVA secondary radial distribution system. With the control of reactive power in a radial distribution system, the power factor can be improved near to unity. The selected radial distribution system mainly feeding power to vital loads of an Educational Institution. In this paper, the study of 750 kVA secondary radial distribution system is analyzed in terms of electrical power system of institute, power consumption pattern and tariff related issues. Some conclusions to improve the system performance in terms of power factor and reduction in tariff were drawn. The coordinated control of switchable capacitor bank and DSTATCOM performance depends on the calculation of the reference source currents that generates the gating pulses of the voltage source converter-based DSTATCOM. For this purpose, the control strategy adopted is Real and Reactive power (PQ) control, Synchronous Reference Frame theory, Back Propagation Control algorithm and Adaptive Linear (ADALINE) control is implemented in this system using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. Generation of the PWM pulses triggers the IGBT of the VSI-based DSTATCOM. This is achieved using DSP TMS 320 F 2812, a 32-bit processor that is programmed with CCS V3.3 and C2000 embedded code generation tool using MATLAB/Simulink, and the same is being executed with code composer studio V 6.0.1. The performance of the selected secondary radial distribution system is analyzed experimentally in a hardware prototype to evaluate the effect of DSTATCOM and switchable capacitor bank.

DSTATCOM modelling for voltage stability with fuzzy logic PI current controller

In recent years, applications of inverter based power quality conditioners have been growing for reactive power compensation in distribution systems due to their faster response times as compared to the conventional compensators. Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator (D-STATCOM) is an inverter based power quality conditioner device used to improve the power quality issues in distribution systems. Control of D-STATCOM is usually realized by Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers with fixed parameters. However, the overall control performance may be unsatisfactory due to its nonlinear structure. In this paper, Fuzzy-PI controller which has a nonlinear and robust structure is proposed for control of D-STATCOM’s direct and quadrature axes currents. The article presents the fuzzy logic control of the D-STATCOM which tries to improve the damping of a power system. Simulation of Fuzzy-PI current controlled D-STATCOM is performed by MATLAB/Simulink software. In simulation study, the dynamic response of D-STATCOM is observed by changing the reference reactive current. A comparison of the simulation results between the proposed technique and the conventional PI controller has been presented.

Load Compensation for Diesel Generator-Based Isolated Generation System Employing DSTATCOM

This paper presents the control of distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM) for reactive power, harmonics and unbalanced load current compensation of a diesel generator set for an isolated system. The control of DSTATCOM is achieved using least mean square-based adaptive linear element (Adaline). An Adaline is used to extract balanced positive-sequence real fundamental frequency component of the load current and a proportional-integral (PI) controller is used to maintain a constant voltage at the dc-bus of a voltage-source converter (VSC) working as a DSTATCOM. Switching of VSC is achieved by controlling source currents to follow reference currents using hysteresis-based PWM control. This scheme is simulated under MATLAB environment using Simulink and PSB block-set toolboxes for feeding linear and nonlinear loads. The modeling is performed for a three-phase, three-wire star-connected synchronous generator coupled to a diesel engine, along with the three-leg VSC working as a DSTATCOM. Results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the control of DSTATCOM for the load compensation and an optimal operation of the DG set.
