The neglected contributions of self-efficacy to older adults’ financial capacity

Purpose An ageing population comes with its own set of challenges such as impaired financial capacity and resultant dependency on others to manage financial affairs. Dependency, in turn, as the evidence suggests, creates opportunities for financial exploitation of older adults. Related studies have primarily examined the clinical features and correlates of financial capacity or have attempted to develop its multidimensional measures. Both of which do little to resolve issues associated with impaired financial capacity. This paper aims to make a case for future researchers to assess older adults’ financial capacity from a non-clinical aspect. Design/methodology/approach Drawing on the notion of self-efficacy, as encapsulated within the social cognitive theory, this paper presents evidence from a host of different domains to demonstrate the potential contributions of self-efficacy to older adults’ financial capacity. Findings The contributions of self-efficacy in preserving older adults’ financial capacity appear to be much more profound than is currently acknowledged in the literature, thereby overlooking potentially promising and cost-effective interventions for autonomous ageing. Originality/value This paper presents a novel application of self-efficacy to autonomous ageing. Within this context, potential routes to the deployment of self-efficacy-based interventions are also discussed.

FACTORS AFFECTING QUALITY IMPROVEMENT OF LIFE IN PATIENTS WITH POST-TRANSFEMORAL AMPUTATION

Objective: The study aims to investigate the contributions of self-efficacy, motivation, religiosity, social support, optimism, and subjective well-being as factors affecting quality of life on individuals with transfermoral amputation. Through empowerment, it is expected that there will be an increase in independence and socioeconomy. The ultimate goal of the empowerment process is for independence.
 Methods: This study used observational analytic with cross-sectional approach. The sample in this study was 110 post-transfemoral amputation patients. Data taken from questionnaires of self-efficacy, motivation, religiosity, social support, optimism, subjective well-being and quality of life were analyzed using structural equation modeling.
 Results: There was no influence of motivation on quality of life (critical ratio [CR]=0.535 <1.96; p=0.592 <0.05). There was a statistically significant positive effect of self-efficacy on quality of life (CR=3.082> 1.96; p=0.002 <0.05). There was a statistically significant positive effect of religiosity on quality of life (CR=2.919> 1.96; p=0.004 <0.05). There was no influence from social support for quality of life (CR=0.082 <1.96; p=0.935 <0.05). There was a statistically significant positive effect of optimism on quality of life (CR=2.307> 1.96; p=0.021 <0.05). There was a statistically significant positive effect of subjective well-being on quality of life (CR=2.089> 1.96; p=0.037 <0.05).
 Conclusion: The quality of life of patients with post-transfemoral amputation is positively and significantly influenced by optimism, religiosity, self-efficacy, and subjective well-being.

Understanding the Career Aspirations of Diverse Community College Students

The purpose of the study was to examine the relative contributions of career predictors (self-efficacy, career barriers, and coping-efficacy for overcoming barriers) in predicting educational and achievement aspirations in a diverse sample of community college students. Data from 236 community college students were utilized. Results from hierarchical regressions suggested that career-decision self-efficacy, college self-efficacy, compromising career for partner, perceptions of barriers, and coping efficacy in overcoming barriers were unique predictors of achievement and educational aspirations. As hypothesized, coping efficacy accounted for variance above and beyond the contributions of self-efficacy and barriers in predicting aspirations. Implications of these findings for research and practice are discussed.

The contributions of self-efficacy and perceived organisational support when taking charge at work

Orientation: Taking charge as an extra role in the workplace is necessary for the survival of modern firms. Therefore, understanding the personal and organisational factors when one takes charge is critical for organisations.Research purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the contributions of self-efficacy and perceived organisational support when taking charge at work.Motivation for the study: Although many previous studies have examined the antecedents of taking charge in North American business environments, we know little about taking charge in the developing economies of Africa. Research about taking charge will provide valuable information for managers of businesses in developing countries in Africa.Research design, approach and method: This study used a cross-sectional survey design to examine the contributions of self-efficacy and perceived organisational support to taking charge at work amongst 201 bank workers in Nsukka, Southeast Nigeria.Main findings: Regression analysis results showed that self-efficacy had a significant relationship with taking charge at work. The results also showed a statistically significant relationship between perceived organisational support and taking charge at work.Practical/managerial implications: The implications of the results are that interventions that focus on improving self-efficacy will contribute to the behaviours of employees who take charge. In addition, organisations that develop strategies to make employees perceive the organisation as supportive will also have members that engage in more supervisory behaviours.Contribution/value-add: This study was one of the first attempts to investigate taking charge at work in a developing economy of Africa. The results of the study, that self-efficacy and perceived organisational support have relationships with taking charge at work, will contribute to a better understanding of the concept and to building robust theories.

Arthritis self-efficacy and self-efficacy for resisting eating: Relationships to pain, disability, and eating behavior in overweight and obese individuals with osteoarthritic knee pain

This study examined arthritis self-efficacy and self-efficacy for resisting eating as predictors of pain, disability, and eating behaviors in overweight or obese patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Patients ( N = 174) with a body mass index between 25 and 42 completed measures of arthritis-related self-efficacy, weight-related self-efficacy, pain, physical disability, psychological disability, overeating, and demographic and medical information. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were conducted to examine whether arthritis self-efficacy (efficacy for pain control, physical function, and other symptoms) and self-efficacy for resisting eating accounted for significant variance in pain, disability, and eating behaviors after controlling for demographic and medical characteristics. Analyses also tested whether the contributions of self-efficacy were domain specific. Results showed that self-efficacy for pain accounted for 14% ( p = .01) of the variance in pain, compared to only 3% accounted for by self-efficacy for physical function and other symptoms. Self-efficacy for physical function accounted for 10% ( p = .001) of the variance in physical disability, while self-efficacy for pain and other symptoms accounted for 3%. Self-efficacy for other (emotional) symptoms and resisting eating accounted for 21% ( p < .05) of the variance in psychological disability, while self-efficacy for pain control and physical function were not significant predictors. Self-efficacy for resisting eating accounted for 28% ( p = .001) of the variance in eating behaviors. Findings indicate that self-efficacy is important in understanding pain and behavioral adjustment in overweight or obese OA patients. Moreover, the contributions of self-efficacy were domain specific. Interventions targeting both arthritis self-efficacy and self-efficacy for resisting eating may be helpful in this population.

Recurrent pain among university students: Contributions of self-efficacy and perfectionism to the pain experience

Although recurrent pain is a relatively frequent experience among university students, it is not well understood. In this study, we examined the role of self-efficacy and perfectionism, constructs particularly relevant to students, in understanding recurrent pain among 177 university students. Self-efficacy has been established as a significant predictor of disability in chronic pain ( Arnstein, Caudill, Mandle, Norris, & Beasley, 1999), but not recurrent pain. Socially prescribed and self-oriented perfectionism have been established as vulnerability factors in the development of negative emotion ( Flett, Hewitt, Garshowitz, & Martin, 1997), but not within pain populations. In this study, even after controlling for pain severity, pain-related interference was greatest among those who believed that others had unrealistic expectations of them (socially prescribed perfectionism) and who had low self-efficacy for coping with symptoms and physical functioning. Similarly, negative affect was greatest among those who believed that others held high standards for them and that they could not cope with the symptoms of recurrent pain. Future directions for research are discussed.

Beliefs of blue-collar workers: stage of readiness for exercise.

To address a theoretical debate regarding contributions of self-efficacy and the theory of planned behavior (TPB) in explaining the amount of variance in stage of readiness to exercise among blue-collar workers. A validated questionnaire was used for assessment. LISREL indicated that self-efficacy had the most influence on stage and TPB constructs were subjugated to self-efficacy. Univariate analyses indicated that self-efficacy and TPB variables are important for intervention. Self-efficacy plays a major role in explaining exercise stage among high-risk blue-collar workers, and self-efficacy and TPB constructs are important to consider in designing interventions.

Willingness and capacity: the determinants of prosocial organizational behaviour among nurses in the UK

Employees' prosocial organizational behaviour (PSOB), such as 'helping' and 'service quality' behaviour, is widely recognized as an important contributor to organizational success, particularly in service industry. Empirical studies in this area have been mainly conducted in the US context with samples of non-professional service workers. In this paper, PSOB among UK National Health Service nurses was empirically examined. Based on the general motivation and performance literature in psychology, nurses' PSOB performance was theoretically hypothesized to be a function of both their 'willingness' and their 'capacity' for PSOB performance. The 'willingness' component is captured by nurses' 'commitment' to their workplace and to their occupation, while the 'capacity' factor is tapped by nurses' sense of 'self-efficacy'. The empirical results of this study indicate that the level of PSOB is significantly explained by both commitment and self-efficacy and the contributions of self-efficacy and commitment to PSOB were independent and incremental. However, of the two forms of commitment, it was nurses' organizational rather than their occupational commitment which proved to be important. The theoretical contributions of the study and its implications for HRM practices are discussed.
