Quantitatively unveiling the role of coastal wetlands in regulating eutrophication and enhancing water environmental capacity

Human activities have intensified the global challenge of coastal eutrophication. Recently, water resource managers have encountered difficulties in formulating precise pollutant reduction strategies to mitigate coastal eutrophication. Despite the recognized importance of coastal wetlands and pollution sources in influencing coastal nutrient levels, accurately quantifying their impact remains difficult. To address this challenge, this study introduces a novel approach for optimizing water environmental capacity. A coupled model integrating hydrodynamics, water quality, and wetland nutrient mechanisms was developed to simulate the spatio-seasonal distribution of water, sediment, and vegetation nutrients in a semi-enclosed bay (Liaodong Bay, China) and a large-scale coastal wetland (Liaohe estuary wetland, China). Model parameters and simulation results were calibrated and validated using extensive long-term field investigations and laboratory experiments. The average root mean square errors between simulated and observed values for all validation points were as follows: 0.80mgL-1, 0.53mgL-1, 0.08mgL-1, 6.70μgL-1, and 0.50μgL-1 for dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, dissolved inorganic phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a, respectively. The total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in the sediment were 0.10gkg-1 and 0.05gkg-1, respectively. For Suaeda salsa, the TN and TP were 2.91gkg -1 and 0.08gkg -1, respectively. For Phragmites australis, the TN and TP were 114.22gkg -1 and 6.21gkg -1, respectively. The results suggest that excessive river discharge and a stable residual circulation structure contribute to the persistent eutrophication in Liaodong Bay. The Liaohe estuary wetland enhances the environmental capacity of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and dissolved inorganic phosphorus in Liaodong Bay to 271±31tyr-1 and 8±1tyr-1, respectively, accounting for 1.8±0.2% and 1.3±0.2% of their respective environmental capacities. The reduction in dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration is significant, with a maximum decrease of 0.17mgL-1. The maximum contributions of atmospheric deposition and aquaculture wastewater to dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration are 0.08mgL-1 and 0.03mgL-1, respectively, with higher contributions in spring and summer than in fall and winter. These findings highlight the critical role of coastal wetlands in mitigating eutrophication and underscore the need for spatio-seasonal water management programs. This work serves as a model for effectively reducing global coastal pollution emissions.

Composition and Biogeochemical Effects of Carbohydrates in Aerosols in Coastal Environment

We adopted a simple and rapid measurement method to analyze the concentrations of monosaccharides (MCHO) and polysaccharides (PCHO) in carbohydrates, a subset of organic carbon found in size-fractionated atmospheric particles. Seasonal and source-related factors influenced carbohydrate concentrations, with total water-soluble carbohydrates (TCHO) accounting for approximately 23% of the water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in spring when biological activity was high. We observed that the mode of aerosol transport significantly influenced the particle size distribution of carbohydrates, with MCHO exhibiting relatively high concentrations in fine particles (<1 μm) and PCHO showing higher concentrations in coarse particles (>1 μm). Moreover, our results revealed that MCHO and PCHO contributed 51% and 49%, respectively, to the TCHO concentration. This contribution varied by approximately ±19% depending on the season, suggesting the importance of both MCHO and PCHO. Additionally, through the combined use of principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF), we determined that biomass burning accounts for 30% of the aerosol. Notably, biomass burning accounts for approximately 52% of the WSOC flux, with MCHO accounting for approximately 78% of the carbon from this source, indicating the substantial influence of biomass burning on aerosol composition. The average concentration of TCHO/WSOC in the atmosphere was approximately 18%, similar to the marine environment, reflecting the relationship between the biogeochemical cycles of the two environments. Finally, the fluxes of MCHO and PCHO were 1.10 and 5.28 mg C m−2 yr−1, respectively. We also found that the contribution of atmospheric deposition to marine primary productivity in winter was 15 times greater than that in summer, indicating that atmospheric deposition had a significant impact on marine ecosystems during nutrient-poor seasons. Additionally, we discovered that WSOC accounts for approximately 62% of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the Min River, suggesting that atmospheric deposition could be a major source of organic carbon in the region.

Understanding the role of atmospheric deposition on the environmental load of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances: A case study in Three Gorges Reservoir, China

Sixty-nine total suspended particle (TSP) samples, paired with forty-eight surface soil samples, covering four seasons from January 2021 to November 2021, were collected from the Three Gorges Reservoir Region (TGRR). Twenty per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were analyzed to evaluate their contamination characteristics and understand the role of atmospheric deposition on the environmental loads in TGRR. The annual average concentrations of PFASs in TSP and soil were 37.2 ± 1.22 pg·m−3 and 0.798 ± 0.134 ng·g−1, respectively. For TSP, concentrations were highest in spring and lowest in summer. For soil, it was in autumn and winter, respectively. The seasonality was more influenced by anthropogenic activities than by meteorological conditions or physicochemical parameters of the soil. Positive matrix fractionation (PMF) indicated that, based on annual averages, PFOA-based products (40.2 %) were the major sources of PFASs in TSP, followed by PFOS-based products (25.2 %) and precursor degradation (34.6 %). The highest source contributor for PFASs in spring was precursor degradation (40.9 %), while in other three seasons, it was PFOA-based products (39.9 %, 40.9 % and 52.0 %, respectively). The mean atmospheric dry and wet deposition fluxes of PFASs were estimated at 4.38 ng·m−2·day−1 and 23.5 ng·m−2·day−1, respectively. The contribution of atmospheric deposition to the inventory mass of PFASs in the surface soil was 22.3 %. These findings fill a gap in knowledge regarding the processes and mechanisms of the occurrence, sources and atmospheric deposition of PFASs in the TGRR.

Volcanic ash in soil is a source of strontium in stream water in chert‐bedrock forests in Mount Amamaki, Japan

AbstractAcid deposition is widespread in Japan, but acidification of stream water is rare in forest ecosystems. Bedrock‐derived cations, including those released into the soil by weathering of bedrock minerals, generally act to neutralize acid deposition and flow out into streams. Volcanic ash, which is widespread in Japan, may also release cations and neutralize acids, but the contribution of volcanic‐ash‐derived cations is currently poorly explored. To assess the importance of volcanic ash as a source of base cations, we examined strontium in two catchments underlain by chert bedrock at Mount Amamaki, Japan. Additionally, we obtained comparative data from two sandstone‐bedrock catchments in the same area. We measured 87Sr/86Sr ratios in samples of stream water, bulk precipitation, riverbed rock, and soil from the catchments. We used the 87Sr/86Sr data to analyze the relative contributions of atmospheric deposition, bedrock, and volcanic ash in soil as sources of Sr in the stream waters. We estimated volcanic ash in soil to contribute between 46% and 78% of stream‐water Sr for one chert‐bedrock catchment, and between 0% and 52% for the other. We conclude that volcanic ash in soil is an important source of Sr in stream water. Thus, volcanic ash can act as a source of base cations and hence contribute to the acid‐neutralizing capacity of soil in forest ecosystems in Japan.

Assessment of particulate Zn and Pb sources in the Orne watershed (Northeast France) using geochemical tools.

The Orne River, a tributary of the Moselle River, was highly impacted by industrial activities for more than one century. Land use along the Orne River is highly contrasted, with local specificity from its source to its junction with the Moselle River. The intense industrial activity left behind tons of steelmaking wastes (SMW) on the land surface and within the Orne riverbed. To assess the sources of particulate Zn and Pb transported as suspended sediment in the Orne River, different sets of samples from likely Zn- and Pb-bearing particle sources within the Orne watershed were collected. Three sets of samples were taken from potential sources representing detrital, urban, and inherited industrial particles. Mineralogy, element contents, and Zn and Pb isotope compositions were obtained to characterize and reveal the fingerprint of each set of samples. Soil samples were collected on distinct geomorphological areas characterized by different soil types and land uses. They all display detrital minerals assigned to the geological background. Urban dusts and steelmaking residues display specific mineral phases (sulfates and iron oxides, respectively). Element compositions present strong discrepancies between the distinct sets of samples. SMWs are particularly enriched in Fe, Zn, and Pb. Concerning isotopic composition, SMWs exhibit δ66Zn values ranging from - 0.67 to 1.66‰. Urban samples display δ66Zn values between - 0.11 and 0.13‰, and soils present δ66Zn values between - 0.24 and 0.47‰. The 206Pb/204Pb ratio was estimated to range from 17.550 to 18.807 for soils, from 17.973 to 18.219 for urban samples, and from 18.313 to 18.826 for SMWs. For each of the three sets of samples (soils, urban, industrial), variations of geochemical fingerprint were observed. For soils, the relatively large variations of Zn and Pb isotopic compositions were attributed to distinct land use and the contribution of atmospheric deposition. For industrial samples, the variations were more intense and may be attributed either to distinct industrial processes in the production of pig iron or to distinct furnace-flume treatment modes. The three sets of samples (urban, industrial, and detrital) could be distinguished based on Zn and Pb contents and isotopes. Finally, this study not only highlighted the sources that released particulate Zn and Pb into the Orne River system, it also demonstrated that urban particles are well defined in terms of Zn and Pb isotopic signatures, and those isotopic signatures could be extrapolated to other case studies.

Stable Isotope Ratios Trace the Rice Uptake of Cadmium from Atmospheric Deposition via Leaves and Roots.

Cadmium (Cd) stable isotopes provide a novel technique to investigate the fate of Cd in the environment, but challenges exist for tracing the sources in the plants. We performed individual rice leaf and root exposures to dry and wet deposition using customized open-top chambers (OTCs) in the greenhouse and in the field next to a smelter, respectively. The field experiment also included a control without Cd deposition and a "full" treatment. The exposure experiments and isotope signatures showed that leaves can directly take up atmospheric Cd and then translocate within rice plants to other tissues, contributing 52-70% of Cd in grains, which exceeded the contribution (30-48%) by root exposure. The Cd isotopes in leaves, nodes, internodes, and grains demonstrate that roots preferentially take up Cd from wet deposition, but leaves favor uptake of Cd from dry deposition. The Cd uptake by leaves is redistributed via nodes, allowing for upward transport to the grains but preventing downward transport to the roots. Leaves favor uptake of heavy isotopes from atmospheric deposition (ΔCd114/110Leaf-Dust: 0.10 ± 0.02‰) but retain light isotopes and transport heavy isotopes to the nodes and further to grains. These findings highlight the contribution of atmospheric deposition to rice and Cd isotopes as a useful tracer for quantifying sources in plants when different isotopic compositions are in sources.

Using dual stable isotopes method for nitrate sources identification in Cao-E River Basin, Eastern China

Excess nitrate (NO3−) of water is a worldwide environmental problem. Therefore, identifying the sources and analyzing respective contribution rates are of great importance for improving water quality. The current study was carried out to identify the potential sources of NO3− pollution in Cao-E River basin, in Eastern China. Surface water samples were collected during the dry season and wet season. Multiple hydrochemical indices, dual NO3− isotopes (δ15N–NO3− and δ18O–NO3−) and a Bayesian model (stable isotope analysis in R, MixSIAR) were applied to identify NO3− sources and estimate the proportional contributions of multiple NO3− sources. During the sampling period, nitrification was a dominant nitrogen transformation process in the study area. The results of the NO3− isotopes suggested that manure and sewage (M&S), soil nitrogen (SN) and nitrogen fertilizer (NF) were the major contributors to NO3−. Moreover, the results obtained from the MixSIAR model showed that the proportional contributions of atmospheric deposition (AD), NF, M&S and SN to NO3− were 2.82, 15.45, 44.25, 37.47% and 3.14, 23.39, 31.78, 41.69% in the dry and wet season, respectively. This study provided evidence to further understand the sources, transport, and transformation of N in Cao-E River basin, which deepens the understanding of the management of N contaminant.

Study on total phosphorus pollution load estimation and prevention and control countermeasures in Dongting Lake

In order to fight the battle for reducing total phosphorus (TP) in Dongting Lake and continuously improve the water ecological environment of the Yangtze River, this study accounts for the TP pollution load in Dongting Lake. To this end, the sources of the pollutants are analyzed and corresponding prevention and control measures are proposed by comprehensive use of field research and historical data analysis. The obtained results reveal that the annual TP input to the Dongting Lake was 23287 t in 2017, among which the input from four rivers and three lake entrances represent the main source with an annual TP input of 14033 t (including 3681 t from sediment input), accounting for 60.26%. Agricultural pollution is the second largest source of TP input, accounting for 32.69%, while domestic pollution only accounts for 5.93%. Additionally, the contributions of atmospheric deposition and industrial pollution in order are 0.69% and 0.4%. The TP input from moving sources such as birds and waterway shipping is very small, only accounting for 0.03%. Based on the achieved results, this study aims to propose corresponding prevention and control measures in four aspects: interception of river and lake pollution, control of agricultural pollution sources, enhancement of sewage treatment and industrial pollution prevention.

Effects of atmospheric deposition on heavy metals accumulation in agricultural soils: Evidence from field monitoring and Pb isotope analysis

Atmospheric deposition is an essential pathway of heavy metals (HMs) from the atmosphere to soils, while few studies assess the effects and contributions of atmospheric deposition on HMs accumulations in agricultural soils from the field and regional scales. In this study, eleven representative field monitoring sites from industrial areas, agricultural areas, and reference site in a typical rapid industrial development region were selected to determine the effects of atmospheric deposition on soil HMs accumulation. Industrial activities significantly increased the deposited particles flux from atmospheric deposition, with annual particles fluxes in industrial areas being 1.83 and 1.90 times higher than in agricultural areas and reference site, respectively. Although the HMs deposition fluxes had decreased significantly with time by literature comparison, the deposition fluxes of Cd and Pb were still at high levels in this study area. Precipitation was the key factor affecting seasonal variations of atmospheric HMs deposition. Lead isotope analysis indicated that atmospheric Pb originated from coal combustion, and atmospheric deposition was the primary source of Pb contamination in agricultural soil adjacent to industries. This study provided insight into the effects of atmospheric deposition on agricultural soil HMs accumulations at the regional scale and an important theoretical basis for source-preventing soil HMs contamination in industrial developed and other similar areas.

Atmospheric deposition as a direct source of particulate organic carbon in region coastal surface seawater: Evidence from stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis

To assess the source characteristics of coastal aerosols and evaluate the contribution of atmospheric deposition to particulate organic matter in surface seawater, total suspended particulates (TSP) were collected at a shore-based site on the south coast of North Yellow Sea from December 2019 through November 2020. The samples were analyzed for total organic carbon (TOC) and nitrogen (TN) as well as stable carbon and nitrogen isotope (δ13C and δ15N). The results showed that the annual mean concentrations of TOC and TN were 5.36 ± 4.74 and 5.12 ± 6.52 μg m−3, respectively. δ13C fluctuated between −25.1 ‰ and −19.2 ‰ with an annual mean of −24.0 ± 1.0 ‰ and a significant seasonal variation (P < 0.05) characterizing by the enrichment in winter (−23.4 ± 0.6 ‰) compared to other seasons, which was probably related to the massive coal combustion. Besides, δ15N ranged from 7.9 ‰ to 21.1 ‰ with an annual mean of 12.5 ± 2.9 ‰ and a less pronounced seasonal pattern (P = 0.23). The Bayesian isotope-mixing model showed that, annually, the most important source of TSP was biogenic and biomass source (55.5 ± 10.8 %), followed by fossil fuel combustion (31.9 ± 9.0 %), while the marine contribution was less (12.6 ± 2.3 %). For TOC and TN, the dominated sources were fossil fuel combustion (47.7 ± 3.4 %) and biogenic and biomass source (57.3 ± 11.7 %), respectively. Furthermore, the model results indicated that the contribution of atmospheric deposition to suspended particulate matter in surface seawater was 18.0 ± 11.0 %, 17.1 ± 6.7 % and 10.2 ± 2.0 % in autumn, spring and summer, respectively. For particulate organic carbon in surface seawater, the contribution of atmospheric deposition was 35.2 ± 3.5 % in spring, highlighting the huge impact of atmospheric deposition on particulate carbon cycling in coastal waters.

The atmospheric microplastics deposition contributes to microplastic pollution in urban waters

Identifying and understanding the potential sources delivering microplastics into the urban water environment is imperative for microplastic pollution control. However, how atmospheric deposition contributes to microplastic pollution in the urban water environment is unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the contribution of atmospheric deposition to microplastic pollution in urban waters based on the analysis of the atmospheric deposition characteristics in the urban area. The results showed that microplastic deposition fluxes during wet weather and dry weather varied from 1.1 × 103±0.06×103 to 3.5 × 103±0.3 × 103 particles/m2/day and 0.91×103±0.09×103 to 1.6 × 103±0.1 × 103 particles/m2/day, respectively. The microplastics deposition flux showed moderate to strong correlations to atmospheric particulate matter concentrations, especially the PM2.5 concentration (R2 = 0.76–0.93), suggesting the regularly monitored PM2.5 concentration might be served as an indicator for microplastics deposition flux estimation. The deposited microplastics were mainly transparent fragments with an average size of 51–67 μm. Polyethylene and polypropylene were the most abundant plastic polymer, followed by polyethylene terephthalate and polyamide. The comparison of microplastics collected during different weather conditions suggested that rain events could increase microplastics deposition fluxes when air quality conditions are similar. Particularly, rains promoted the deposition of fibrous microplastics as well as smaller microplastics. The estimated daily microplastics deposition in the whole city region suggested more microplastics were deposited in summer and winter. The total quantity of microplastics deposited in the urban environment could reach 1.7–12 times of those discharged from treated wastewater. Among them, 10% would directly deposit to urban waters in the studied city region, while the others may also enter the urban waters through runoff. The results of this study highlighted that the atmospheric microplastics deposition is an important source for microplastics, especially smaller ones, to enter the urban waters, which could not be ignored during microplastics pollution control.

Contamination and sources of polychlorinated naphthalenes in the surface sediments of Chaobai River, China

In aquatic systems, sediment is both a sink for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and a potential source of POPs release. Consequently, it is important to understand the pollution characteristics and sources of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) as POPs of Stockholm Convention in sediment for control of the ecological risk. Atmospheric deposition is a potential source of PCNs in sediment. However, there is no clear report on the contribution of atmospheric deposition to PCNs in sediments. In this study, the Chaobai River in China was selected because it is an important drinking water source that is not affected by wastewater discharge. Surface sediments from the river were analyzed for 75 PCN congeners by using high resolution gas chromatography combined with high resolution mass spectrometry. The total PCNs concentration ranged from 54 to 2266 (mean: 402) pg/g. The toxic equivalent quantity of 19 PCNs in surface sediments was 9.69 × 10−2, and CN73, CN66/CN67, and CN63 had the largest contributions to this value. Dichlorinated and trichlorinated naphthalenes were the dominant homologs. The PCN data from the sediment samples in this study were combined with data for PCNs in ambient air from a literature, which has a good match with this study in both temporal and spatial scales. The contribution of atmospheric deposition to PCNs in the surface sediment was evaluated by comparing congener characteristics and correlation analysis. Our study indicated atmospheric transportation and deposition are important pathways for transport of PCNs into surface sediments.

Effects of snow and land modification on an andesite lava aquifer in Chokai volcano, northwestern Japan

Studied regionChokai volcano is composed of low-permeability andesite lava, a snowfall-influenced hydrological setting that has been little studied. Study focusSnowfall there is expected to decrease due to climate change and expanded quarrying along its southern foot. To evaluate the effects of future environmental changes on the groundwater discharged from springs at the feet of lava flows, which is used for agriculture and domestic purposes, we used isotopic, hadrochemical, geologic, meteorological, and topographic information to elucidate the recharge area, major recharge season, and underground flow of spring waters and surface waters at Chokai. New hydrogeological insights for the regionGroundwater and surface water are of NaCl type with high deuterium excess values, indicating a strong contribution of atmospheric deposition of sea salt aerosols during winter. Altitude indicators based on water H and O isotopic compositions and chloride ion concentrations suggest that the foothill springs are recharged mainly on gentle slopes below ∼700 m elevation. This area is generally covered with volcanic sediments, which contain wetlands and perched aquifers that continuously supply groundwater to the underlying lava through fractures and voids without thorough mixing in the lava aquifer. Anticipated decreases in snowfall and the removal of surface rocks may adversely affect not only the foothill springs supplied by snowmelt and the rice cultivation that depends on them, but also the wetland ecosystem.

Nitrogen Cycling Across a Salinity Gradient From the Pearl River Estuary to Offshore: Insight From Nitrate Dual Isotopes

AbstractDual isotope measurements were performed on nitrate (δ15N‐NO3− and δ18O‐NO3−) in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) and the adjacent northern South China Sea (NSCS) to investigate nitrate sources and its biogeochemical processes during rainy season. Our results indicated that in the PRE, high nitrate levels were associated with the intense human activities in PRE delta, the sources of which included the reduced nitrogen (N) fertilizer (29%), SN (nitrate derived from soil N) (18%), manure and sewage (10%), and atmospheric deposition (7%). In the nearshore area, nitrate was characterized by relatively high δ15N‐NO3− and δ18O‐NO3− values suggestive of incomplete nitrate assimilation. Besides, nitrification might be significant in the intermediate and bottom waters due to ammonia release from remineralization of sinking and sedimented organic matter (OM). In the offshore area, nitrate was depleted due to nearly complete utilization, and δ15N‐NO3− and δ18O‐NO3− showed moderate values. In addition, δ18O‐NO3− exhibited a clear vertical gradient with a decrease from the surface to the bottom. A coupled nitrification‐denitrification process in sediment porewater was supposed, which left isotope imprints in bottom waters of the offshore area. In surface waters from the nearshore to the offshore area, although assimilation was the prominent process, the δ15N‐NO3− and δ18O‐NO3− relationship deviated from the 1:1 line, suggesting significant contribution of atmospheric deposition that increased offshore. Our study suggests the external source of nitrate shifts from anthropogenic nitrogen to atmospheric source in the continuous river–estuary–ocean system, and nitrification‐denitrification become more active as it goes seaward.

The contribution of atmospheric deposition of cadmium and lead to their accumulation in rice grains

PurposeOver-accumulation of cadmium and lead in rice grain is a global concern as it has adverse health impacts. Atmospheric deposition is an important source of heavy metal accumulation in soil, but contribution to crops has not been quantified and the mechanisms of foliar Cd and Pb uptake via the stomata of rice leaves exposed to atmospheric fallout are unclear.MethodsTo quantify the contribution of atmospheric deposition on Cd and Pb accumulation in rice grains, a rice pot experiment with four exposure treatments (T1, all day exposure without geotextile membranes; T2, all day exposure with geotextile membranes; T3, daytime exposure with geotextile membranes; and T4, night exposure with geotextile membranes) using severely (ZZ) and moderately (XT) polluted soils was conducted.ResultsCd content in shoots and roots was T1 > T2, T3 > T4 in XT soils, and T1 > T2, T4 > T3 in ZZ soils, while Pb content in both soils was T1 > T2, and T4 > T3. Cd and Pb contents in rice grains showed the same trend. Using the isotope ratios tracing method (114/111Cd, 112/111Cd, and 207/206Pb, 208/206Pb), it can be concluded that the contribution of atmospheric deposition to rice grains was quantified as 63.55% and 18.01% for Cd, and 27.69% and 41.13% for Pb in XT and ZZ soils, respectively.ConclusionsFoliar uptake atmospheric deposition had substantial effect on Cd and Pb accumulation in rice grains and the control of heavy metal foliar uptake should be paid more attention to maintain rice safety production.Graphical abstract

Contribution of atmospheric deposition to halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface sediments: A validation study

Surface sediments are both sinks and sources of chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl/Br-PAHs) in the environment. It is important to study the source of Cl/Br-PAHs in the surface sediment for controlling the ecological risk of Cl/Br-PAHs. Clues from the previous research suggested that atmospheric deposition may be one of the main sources of Cl/Br-PAHs in sediment. However, due to the lack of matched sediment and atmospheric Cl/Br-PAHs data, the contribution of atmospheric deposition to Cl/Br-PAHs in sediment has not been confirmed. This study investigated the characteristics of 37 Cl/Br-PAHs and validated the contribution of atmospheric sedimentation to Cl/Br-PAHs in sediment by a case study in the surface sediments of the Chaobai River, China. To the best of our knowledge, four Cl-PAHs and eleven Br-PAHs were found in the sediments for the first time. The total concentrations of 18 Cl-PAH species were 76–2301 pg/g, while those of Br-PAHs were 6–238 pg/g. The toxic equivalent quantities (TEQ) of the Cl-PAHs in surface sediments in the water conservation area and in the urban comparison area were 0.73 pg TEQ/g and 2.21 pg TEQ/g, respectively. The TEQ of the Br-PAHs in surface sediments in the water conservation area and in the urban comparison area were 2.85 × 10−2 pg TEQ/g and 6.6 × 10−2 pg TEQ/g, respectively. Based on the characteristics comparison and correlation analysis of Cl/Br-PAHs in both sediment and ambient air, it was initially confirmed the contribution of atmospheric deposition to Cl-PAHs in sediments. However, there was no conclusion of Br-PAHs in sediment similar to Cl-PAHs in sediment. It was inferred that the sources of Br-PAHs in sediment were different from Cl-PAHs in sediment.

Microplastics retained in stormwater control measures: Where do they come from and where do they go?

Stormwater control measures (SCM) can remove and accumulate microplastics and may serve as a long-term source of microplastics for groundwater pollution because of their potential for downward mobility in subsurface. Furthermore, the number of microplastics accumulated in SCM may have been underestimated as the calculation typically only accounts for microplastics accumulated via episodic stormwater loading and ignores microplastic accumuation via continuous atmospheric deposition. To evaluate the source pathways of accumulated microplastics and their potential for downward mobility to groundwater, we analyzed spatial distributions of microplastics above ground on the canopy around SCM and below ground in the subsurface in and outside the boundaries of fourteen SCM in Los Angeles. Using an exponential model, we link subsurface retardation of microplastics to the median particle size of soil (D50) and land use. Despite receiving significantly more stormwater, microplastic concentrations in SCM at surface depth or subsurface depth were not significantly different from the concentration at the same depth outside the SCM. Similar concentration in and outside of SCM indicates that stormwater is not the sole source of microplastics accumulated in SCM. The high concentration of microplastics on leaves of vegetation in SCM confirms that the contribution of atmospheric deposition is significant. Within and outside the SCM boundary, microplastics are removed within the top 5 cm of the subsurface, and their concentration decreases exponentially with depth, indicating limited potential for groundwater pollution from the microplastics accumulated in SCM. Outside the SCM boundary, the subsurface retardation coefficient decreases with increases in D50, indicating straining of microplastics as the dominant removal mechanism. Inside the boundary of SCM, however, the retardation coefficient was independent of D50, implying that microplastics could have either moved deeper into the filter layer in SCM or that compost, mulch, or organic amendments used in the filter media were pre-contaminated with microplastics. Overall, these results provide insights on microplastics source, accumulation, and downward mobility in SCM.

Phosphorus cycling in the upper waters of the Mediterranean Sea (PEACETIME cruise): relative contribution of external and internal sources

Abstract. The study of phosphorus cycling in phosphate-depleted oceanic regions, such as the Mediterranean Sea, has long suffered from methodological limitations, leading to a simplistic view of a homogeneous surface phosphate pool with concentrations below the detection limit of measurement above the phosphacline. During the PEACETIME (Process studies at the air-sea interface after dust deposition in the Mediterranean Sea) cruise, carried out from 10 May to 11 June 2017, we conducted co-located measurements of phosphate pools at the nanomolar level, alkaline phosphatase activities and atmospheric deposition of phosphorus, across a longitudinal gradient from the west to the central Mediterranean Sea. In the phosphate-depleted layer (PDL), between the surface and the phosphacline, nanomolar phosphate was low and showed little variability across the transect spanning from 6 ± 1 nmol L−1 in the Ionian basin to 15 ± 4 nmol L−1 in the westernmost station. The low variability in phosphate concentration contrasted with that of alkaline phosphatase activity, which varied over 1 order of magnitude across the transect. Nanomolar phosphate data revealed gradients of phosphate concentration over density inside the PDL ranging between 10.6 ± 2.2 µmol kg−1 in the westernmost station to values close to zero towards the east. Using the density gradients, we estimated diapycnal fluxes of phosphate to the PDL and compared them to atmospheric deposition, another external source of phosphate to the PDL. Phosphate supply to the PDL from dry deposition and diapycnal fluxes was comparable in the western part of the transect. This result contrasts with the longtime idea that, under stratification conditions, the upper waters of the Mediterranean Sea receive new P almost exclusively from the atmosphere. The contribution of atmospheric deposition to external P supply increased under the occurrence of rain and Saharan dust. Although this finding must be taken cautiously given the uncertainties in the estimation of diapycnal fluxes, it opens exciting questions on the biogeochemical response of the Mediterranean Sea, and more generally of marine oligotrophic regions, to expected changes in atmospheric inputs and stratification regimes. Taken together, external sources of phosphate to the PDL contributed little to total phosphate requirements which were mainly sustained by in situ hydrolysis of dissolved organic phosphorus. The results obtained in this study show a highly dynamic phosphorus pool in the upper layer of the euphotic zone, above the phosphacline, and highlight the convenience of combining highly sensitive measurements and high-resolution sampling to precisely depict the shape of phosphate profiles in the euphotic zone with still unexplored consequences on P fluxes supplying this crucial layer for biogeochemical cycles.

Nitrogen burden from atmospheric deposition in East Asian oceans in 2010 based on high-resolution regional numerical modeling

East Asian oceans are possibly affected by a high nitrogen (N) burden because of the intense anthropogenic emissions in this region. Based on high-resolution regional chemical transport modeling with horizontal grid scales of 36 and 12 km, we investigated the N burden into East Asian oceans via atmospheric deposition in 2010. We found a high N burden of 2–9 kg N ha−1 yr−1 over the Yellow Sea, East China Sea (ECS), and Sea of Japan. Emissions over East Asia were dominated by ammonia (NH3) over land and nitrogen oxides (NOx) over oceans, and N deposition was dominated by reduced N over most land and open ocean, whereas it was dominated by oxidized N over marginal seas and desert areas. The verified numerical modeling identified that the following processes were quantitatively important over East Asian oceans: the dry deposition of nitric acid (HNO3), NH3, and coarse-mode (aerodynamic diameter greater than 2.5 μm) NO3−, and wet deposition of fine-mode (aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm) NO3− and NH4+. The relative importance of the dry deposition of coarse-mode NO3− was higher over open ocean. The estimated N deposition to the whole ECS was 390 Gg N yr−1; this is comparable to the discharge from the Yangtze River to the ECS, indicating the significant contribution of atmospheric deposition. Based on the high-resolution modeling over the ECS, a tendency of high deposition in the western ECS and low deposition in the eastern ECS was found, and a variety of deposition processes were estimated. The dry deposition of coarse-mode NO3− and wet deposition of fine-mode NH4+ were the main factors, and the wet deposition of fine-mode NO3− over the northeastern ECS and wet deposition of coarse-mode NO3− over the southeastern ECS were also found to be significant processes determining N deposition over the ECS.
