Countries’ green brands within the context of sustainable development goals

This study aims to fill the gap in estimating the Green Country Brand Strength Index and its convergence among EU countries and Ukraine (as a potential EU candidate) from 2006 to 2020. Drawing upon data from the World Data Bank, Eurostat, and The Food and Agriculture Organization, the study employs various analytical tools including principal component analysis, the global Malmquist‒Luenberger productivity index, the entropy method, and σ- and β-convergence theories. The findings suggest a notable increase in the green brand values of the analyzed countries from 2006 to 2020, with a significant expansion of the measurement scale. Notably, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, and Sweden emerged as leaders in the Green Country Brand Strength Index by 2020. Furthermore, the study uncovers convergent policies among EU countries aimed at fostering green brands aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, as evidenced by a decline in σ- and β-convergences. This research provides valuable insights into the dynamics of green branding and policy convergence within the EU and prospective candidate countries. It introduces a distinctive approach to assessing and analyzing green brand strength, emphasizing its critical importance to the formulation of sustainable development policies and strategies.

Gender differences in executive compensation in Spain

PurposeIn the context of sustainable development goal 5 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda: “Achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment”, where gender equality is not only a matter of justice but also essential to achieve sustainable development, this paper aims to examine the gender pay gap in executive director compensation and the influence of female board representation and participation in nomination and remuneration committee (NRC) on this gap in Spanish listed firms over the period 2012–2022.Design/methodology/approachThe analysis is conducted using a data set created by the authors, which includes executive director compensation data for 164 unique firms. This data set comprises 128 distinct observations for a given firm and year for women, and 2,333 observations for men. The authors estimate ordinary least squares models, clustering standard errors by executive. The authors use Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition to decompose gender differences in compensation into differences in the characteristics of men and women and differences in the return on the same characteristics.FindingsThe authors find evidence of pay penalty for female executive directors compared to male counterparts. After controlling for firm, board and executive characteristics, the authors find that women earn 27% less than comparable men. The penalty is lower in companies with a higher share of women on the compensation committee, suggesting that women’s participation plays a role in setting a more equal remuneration policy. The gender gap in executive compensation narrows over time due to a substantial reduction of the differences between men and women in both characteristics and the return on these characteristics.Originality/valueThis study is one of the few analysing the gender gap in executive director compensation and its evolution in Spain. It specifically explores how gender diversity on both the board and the NRC impacts this gap. The analysis is focused on the most recent period characterized by important efforts to promote gender diversity.

A path towards environmental sustainability: exploring the effects of technological innovation and investment freedom on load capacity factor

ABSTRACT This study examines the impact of investment freedom, technological innovation, renewable energy, and economic growth on load capacity factor (LCF) within the context of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 and 13 for a group of high investment freedom countries (Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Chile, Singapore, New Zealand, United States of America, Belgium, Finland, Uruguay, Latvia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland). Furthermore, this research assesses the impacts of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. The data set covers the years between 1995 and 2019. Moreover, the validity of the load capacity curve (LCC) hypothesis is analyzed in all countries. Long-run coefficients are estimated using the Regularized Common Correlated Effects (rCCE) estimator, and the robustness analysis is performed using Common Correlated Effects (CCE) estimators. The overall assessment of the panel reveals that the LCC hypothesis is invalid in the selected nations, with the exception of Belgium. Other findings indicate that investment freedom reduces the LCF for New Zealand. However, investment freedom increases LCF, improving environmental quality in Latvia. Technological innovation decreases LCF for Singapore and increases it for Germany. Renewable energy increases LCF for the UK and Spain. Finally, policy implications for improving environmental quality are discussed.

Industrial development zoning with dual objectives of spatial development suitability and ecosystem service value a case study in Xiaonanhai Hydropower Station basin

The future development of the reservoir basin after the construction of the hydropower station is an important topic in the current context of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) advocated by the United Nations. This study proposed a method for industrial development zoning in reservoir basins focusing on the need for sustainable development and environmental protection, aiming to achieve the double targets of maintaining the spatial development suitability and ecosystem service value. The method is validated with a case study carried out at the Xiaonanhai Hydropower Station, which is located in Chongqing, China, and is currently in the planning stage. The results showed that: (1) Post-construction Suitable Protected Areas for the Xiaonanhai Hydropower Station are mainly located in the upstream area of the reservoir basin, taking 55.14% of the reservoir basin area, the ecosystem service value is up to 48.64%. (2) The reservoir basin is divided into nine industrial sub-districts through a double overlay coupling of development and protection, i.e., the Eco-tourism Zone, Industrial Research Zone, Nature reserve, Industrial Zone, Agro-processing Zone, Agricultural Zone, Modern agricultural park, Eco-industrial Zone, and the Eco-agricultural Zone. (3) The Agro-processing Zone is suggested as the most developed zone as the development conditions of the study area are ideal for processing agricultural products. The Agro-processing Zone can take up to 25.03% of the total area. In conclusion, the industrial zoning delineation method that couples the suitability of land development and the Ecosystem Service Value is able to reasonably determine the functional orientation of each region in the future development of the reservoir area, and optimize the new pattern of development in the reservoir basin.

Future Direction: The study underscores the need for policymakers to mainstream sustainability, strengthen multilateral cooperation, enhance transparency and accountability, and prioritize capacity building and knowledge sharing to achieve sustainable development objectives in collaboration with China.

Towards the Contemporary Conservation of Cultural Heritages: An Overview of Their Conservation History

This paper seeks contemporary cultural heritage conservation principles by reviewing its history, starting from the 18th century, in practices, international documents, and the literature on this topic. It intends to lay a foundation to avoid damaging cultural heritages by misconducting conservation. This study first found that the conservation objects of cultural heritage include particularly important ones and general ones that are closely related to daily life, and they involve tangible and intangible aspects. Second, cultural heritage conservation involves document-based restoration when necessary as well as identifying the value of them to play their role nowadays. Third, integrating cultural heritage conservation within the context of sustainable development goals is essential for successfully balancing the relationship between the built and natural environments. Fourth, mobilising the public to participate in cultural heritage conservation enables the implementation of conservation to meet the expectations of the public, and may have a positive influence on people’s consciousness. Fifth, as a treasure, cultural heritage conservation is a global responsibility that involves conjoint cooperation. Sixth, more cultural heritage conservation interdisciplinary methods have been developed and could be applied, but this should be limited in order to not destruct their authenticity and integrity.

Does artificial intelligence promote green innovation? An assessment based on direct, indirect, spillover, and heterogeneity effects

This paper investigates the intricate relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and green innovation within the context of sustainable development goals. As societies strive to achieve sustainability, understanding the dynamics between technological advancements and environmental progress becomes paramount. Drawing from panel data encompassing 51 countries between 2000 and 2019, this study employs fixed-effects models, mediated effects models, and spatial Durbin models to meticulously examine the influence of AI on green innovation. The empirical findings reveal a robust and significantly positive correlation between AI and green innovation, highlighting the critical role of AI in fostering environmental innovation. Heterogeneity analysis across developed and developing economies delineates variations in the impact of AI on green innovation, shedding light on the influence of economic development levels and financial structures. Developed nations showcase a more pronounced AI-green innovation relationship compared to their developing counterparts, highlighting the complexities of technology adoption within distinct economic landscapes. Moreover, this study delves into the transmission mechanisms underlying the AI-green innovation nexus, revealing the mediating roles of industrial structure and human capital. Industrial upgrading and the enhancement of human capital emerge as crucial pathways through which AI indirectly stimulates green innovation. Spatial analyses reveals the spatial relevance of green innovation globally, emphasizing AI's substantial impact not only within domestic spheres but also across neighboring regions. There are significant direct, indirect, and total effects of AI on green innovation, highlighting its spillover characteristics and the catalytic role it plays in driving collaborative AI development on a global scale. This research contributes nuanced insights into the interplay between AI and green innovation, providing a foundation for policymakers, businesses, and researchers to comprehend the multifaceted dimensions of technological interventions in fostering sustainable innovation. The findings emphasize the imperative of collaborative efforts in utilizing AI's potential to propel green innovation, thereby advancing global sustainability agendas.

Exploring the impacts of ecosystem services on human well-being in Qinghai Province under the framework of the sustainable development goals

Ecosystem services (ESs) play vital roles in meeting the needs of human well-being and supporting sustainable development. However, there is limited research on how the types, amounts, interactions, and changes of the ESs collectively impact human well-being under the context of sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. This study selected Qinghai Province of China as the study area and intended to make such an attempt to fill this gap in terms of the following aspects: (1) analyzing the spatial patterns and changing trends of ten ESs (food supply, water supply, carbon sink, soil retention, sand fixation, hydrological regulation, flood mitigation，cultural service，net primary productivity, and habitat quality) in Qinghai Province from 2000 to 2018; (2)constructing a multi-level index system of human well-being under the framework of the SDGs, and setting the criteria to assess the level of local human well-being; and (3) building a structural equation model to explore the direct and indirect impacts of the types, amounts, interactions and changes of the ESs on actual human well-being and the gaps between actual and targeted human well-being. The findings revealed that: (1) most of the ecosystem services fluctuated with significant downward or upward trends during 2000–2018, except for four ESs (i.e., carbon sink, soil retention, flood mitigation, and habitat quality); (2) only a few indicators of local residents' well-being such as meat production, milk production, the numbers of medical technical personnel in hospitals and health centers, and the numbers of scientific and technical personnel met the SDG criteria in most time, while other indicators remained at low levels and there were large gaps between them and the SDG criteria; (3) actual human well-being and the gaps between actual and targeted human well-being were affected by the types, amounts, interactions and changes of the ESs with different degrees directly or indirectly. The approaches and results in this study are instructive for other regions of the world to make certain the roles of ESs in promoting human well-being and substantiating the SDGs.

Improving brain and vascular health at the population level: Lessons from the Norwegian success story.

Stroke, dementia and ischemic heart disease are a triple threat which combined are the leading causes of death and disability globally. Fortunately, the three diseases share similar risk factors along the vascular cascade which can be targeted for primordial and primary prevention. In Norway, during 1990-2019, the age-standardised incidence rates decreased significantly for dementia by -5.4%, ischemic heart disease by -30.0%, and stroke by -35.3%. This was possible because Norway ensured equitable income for her citizens, and committed sufficient funds to universal health coverage while implementing a semi-decentralized and responsive health system with robust primary health care. This included monitoring the burden of the triple threat and their cardinal risk factors; ensuring primordial, primary and secondary preventive interventions; implementing acute care for ischemic heart disease and stroke; and ensuring interdisciplinary rehabilitation and chronic care for the triple threat. Overall, all countries will need to develop national strategies for combating the triple threat within the context of sustainable development goals with adequate allocation and utilization of resources.

School performance and violence: Intra-urban evaluation of an Amazonian metropolis

The article investigates, at an intra-urban level, the effects of school performance with violent crime in the influence area of schools in a metropolis located in the Amazon, controlling the factors of ambient population, formal policing, and slums/ favelas . The study variables were prepared using the Geographic Information System (GIS) for further spatial regression analysis, due to production and access limitations to quality data for Latin American cities. The urban areas with better school performance present a protective effect against lethal violence. The results were discussed based on the context of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and violent crime prevention initiatives in cities from the Global South. • Good school performance exerts a protective effect against lethal violence on an intra-urban scale. • Results suggest a more reliable and less lethal police activity with frequent patrols to prevent violence in public schools. • Violence is associated with the presence of slums around schools. • GIS is a powerful tool for collecting and processing spatial data on violence in cities from the global south.

Energy vulnerability and pathway towards sustainable energy systems in the Arab region

Abstract Energy vulnerability in the Arab region is linked to various environmental challenges, including water shortage and desertification, as well as accelerating demand for energy which remains largely unchecked, among others. The United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 addresses these cross-cutting issues by setting targets for ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. This article aims to show that progress towards achieving this goal’s targets within the Arab region is currently offtrack, due to a variety of challenges. These include lack of energy demand management needed to decouple energy consumption from economic growth; much required structural and economic reforms, including diversification; lack of long-term planning and technological awareness; and insufficient access to financing. To overcome these problems and address energy vulnerability, Arab countries should integrate sustainable energy as a fundamental element of national development strategies and embrace circular carbon economy principles within the context of SDG 7. Integrated approaches to energy sector management are required, and topics such as natural resources governance and environmental protection should be elevated within domestic policy agendas.

Electrospinning of spider silk‐based nanofibers

AbstractSpider silk has garnered attention as a structural material and a medical resource for next generation because it is tough, lightweight, and biodegradable. Nonwoven silk fabrics are emerging in research and industries owing to advanced electrospinning techniques. Several studies have reported nonwoven fabrics made of spider silk‐like proteins, which are originated from recombinant expression systems, with lower molecular weights than the natural counterpart. The lower molecular weight causes a lack of mechanical strength and durability, preventing the evaluation of industrial potential of the spider silk‐based nonwoven fabric to use as a structural and medical material. In this study, an electrospun nonwoven fabric is produced using native spider silk fibers forcibly reeled from live spiders. The spider silk‐based nonwoven fabrics demonstrate cell compatibility, and the mechanical properties are superior to the silkworm silk‐based nonwoven fabrics. The availability of spider silk‐based nonwoven fabrics introduces an unexplored set of potential uses, along with the context of sustainable development goals.

Aligning SDG 13 with South Africa's development agenda: Adaptation policies and institutional frameworks.

The alignment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with national development agendas has gained traction since the ratification of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015. This article investigates how South Africa has aligned the climate action SDG (SDG 13) with its national development agenda, with an emphasis on adaptation policies and institutional framework. This comes against a background where the country has been accused of bias towards mitigation policies that were trigged by the Long-Term Mitigation Scenarios in 2007, which could have quickened mitigation responses to SDG 13. The data were generated through the use of three key methods, namely key informant interviews (n = 21), an online survey uploaded on an online platform called QuestionPro and a realised sample of 103 completed surveys. Furthermore, relevant policy documents were analysed from a critical discourse perspective. It emerged that South Africa has policies and strategies in place to respond to climate change adaptation within the context of SDG 13. However, while policies are in place, they have not translated to real change on the ground and therefore have not enabled the country to have adequate climate change resilience. The policies have not been translated into concrete actions; there are knowledge gaps in adaptation, poor leadership and lack of clear vision for adaptation and poor coordination. Institutions are scattered, with uneven capacity across sectors and different spheres of government; and weakest at the local government level. It also emerged that mitigation was prioritised for a while over adaptation, with a lack of funding and general awareness. The study recommends that adaptation measures should not be undertaken in isolation, instead, it should be addressed within the context of other programmes such as disaster risk management and sustainable development.

Novel Insights in the Leadership in Business and Economics: A Post-Coronavirus Update

Our world is evolving at an incredibly enormous speed and what was impossible three years ago is now a reality. The concept of leadership and leaders has also undergone profound transformations. Moreover, the recent COVID-19 pandemic caused a digital surge in the ways economic life, business, or education are perceived or conducted. The pandemic proved that small and large businesses, industries, and the whole economies can be suddenly upended by massive technological shifts. Hence, there is a need for a theoretical research update in leadership in business and economics that would bring new insights into this topic and define its place within the context of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our paper presents the novel insights for the leaders and the leadership concept in business and economics from various approaches and angles of view in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic with a focus on sustainable leadership and organizational resilience. It aims at outlying the theoretical background of leadership in business and economics after the pandemic and bringing up interesting and recent leadership case studies from all around of the world. Moreover, this paper aims as sharing the valuable insights into what it means to be a sustainable leader in business and economics, why leaders are needed, and how to become one. The main criteria of this research and its instrumentation include both the theoretical discussion based on the literature review and analysis and the empirical analysis that supports these theoretical provisions. The paper features an empirical model that assesses how business and economic leaders are searching for new ways of work and personal development during and after the COVID-19 pandemic using the own data from the 400 respondents collected in the Czech Republic and Russia. We found that the pandemic enhanced the emotional creativity of business and economic leaders and made them to invest and engage more into using new digital technologies and fundamentally altering the old ways of managing and governing their respective companies and institutions. Our results might provide valuable food for thought both for academics working on various angles of leadership, as well as for entrepreneurs and businesspeople who want to receive recent updates on the topic of leadership to use them in their daily work.

An Investigation upon Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 within the Context of Sustainable Development Goals

In the literature, quite limited research exists on the subject of Society 5.0. The present study examined the existence of Society 5.0 and the effectiveness of Industry 4.0 and evaluated the efficiency of United Nations Development Goals (SDGs) in this process, especially in Turkey. The research was carried out based on data obtained through a survey form with 30 questions which was conducted with 335 academicians working at Kafkas University. The data were analyzed by means of exploratory factor analysis with the SPSS program, confirmatory factor analysis with AMOS, and structural equation modeling with Smart PLS. The analysis results indicated that SDG9, SDG10, SDG11, SDG12, SDG13, and SDG14 had a low influence (i.e., R2: 0.172) on the application of Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0. Moreover, it was observed that the participants were heavily affected by order of the day and gave responses to the questions with that impact. The study also revealed that Turkey did not have a leading philosophy in the field of Society 5.0 and Industry 4.0 and made progress by concentrating on out-dated processes.

Measuring and Modeling Food Losses

Abstract Within the context of Sustainable Development Goals, progress towards Target 12.3 can be measured and monitored with the Food Loss Index. A major challenge is the lack of data, which dictated many methodology decisions. Therefore, the objective of this work is to present a possible improvement to the modeling approach used by the Food and Agricultural Organization in estimating the annual percentage of food losses by country and commodity. Our proposal combines robust statistical techniques with the strict adherence to the rules of the official statistics. In particular, the case study focuses on cereal crops, which currently have the highest (yet incomplete) data coverage and allow for more ambitious modeling choices. Cereal data is available in 66 countries and 14 different cereal commodities from 1991 to 2014. We use the annual food loss as response variable, expressed as percentage over production, by country and cereal commodity. The estimation work is twofold: it aims at selecting the most important factors explaining losses worldwide, comparing two Bayesian model selection approaches, and then at predicting losses with a Beta regression model in a fully Bayesian framework.

Suicide Mortality Rate as a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG): A Bibliometric Analysis.

Suicidal behaviors are a serious but potentially preventable cause of premature death. Increased awareness of the importance of mental health for global health has led to new initiatives, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN). The suicide mortality rate is one of the indicators covered in the UN's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3. The aim of this study is to identify the scientific production and its temporal evolution related to the suicide mortality rate indicator in the context of mental disorders and as one of the SDG. A bibliometric analysis was performed in Scopus to assess the related research on suicide mortality rate, including on the context of the third SDG, from inception to September 2, 2020. The set of articles were analyzed for bibliometric measures. A total of 3126 documents about mental health and suicide mortality rate on the context of SDG were collected. Articles were the predominant type of literature on this area (78.3%), with significant expression on the last years, more evident around 2015, the year of adoption of SDGs. Despite a large volume of evidence, the debate about suicide mortality rate as an indicator of SDG is still very sparse suggesting a need for better consensus on its evaluation methods. This study presents useful characteristics for the formulation of new studies and provides specific targets for the construction or improvement of public policies on the context of the SDGs for further discussion on this strategy proposed by the UN.

The moral and social narratives of sexual and reproductive health in Kenya: a case of adolescents and young people pre- and within the MDG era

BackgroundThe role of global initiatives in catalyzing change within national contexts is complex and less understood. Addressing adolescent sexual and reproductive health in Kenya requires concerted efforts of both state and non-state actors and more importantly, a supportive environment. This paper deconstructs the moral and social narratives of adolescents’ and young people’s sexual and reproductive health (AYSRH) in Kenya as driven by the powerful discourse and ideologies pre- and within the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) era.MethodsLiterature was systematically searched in PubMed and Medline with policy documents obtained from government agencies from the pre-MDG period (2000 and earlier) and within the MDG period (2001–2015). Literature with a substantial focus on SRH were eligible if they captured the different facets of ASRH in Kenya and sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The results were reviewed and synthesized to disentangle the moral and social narratives of AYSRH in Kenya with an MDG lens.ResultsThe evolution of AYSRH policies and programmes in Kenya was gradual and largely shaped by prevailing development threats and moral and social narratives. Pre-MDG period was dominated by issue-based policies of population growth and high fertility rates, with a focus on married population with strong cultural and religious barriers to AYSRH; early to mid-MDG was mainly influenced by the threat of HIV/AIDS, culminating in the first Adolescent Reproductive Health and Development Policy in 2003. However, the policies and subsequent programmes focused on abstinence only and medical narratives, with persistent religious and cultural opposition to AYSRH. Late-MDG saw more progressive policies (these are policies that refer to those that tends towards acceptance of liberal social reforms and which sometimes are contrary to entrenched social norms, beliefs and practices), high government commitment and a refocus on SRH issues due to sustained early childbearing, culminating in the revised Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Policy of 2015.ConclusionDebates in the translation of global goals and commitments to policy and practice at country level need to account for national level realities in AYSRH reforms. The findings contribute to critical evidence for strategic policy and programming approaches for AYSRH in Kenya and in SSA and for the realization of their rights within the context of sustainable development goals.
