Studying information needs of central scientific library users in a big industrial city to improve the library document resources

Scientific libraries as an essential part of science, education, sociocultural and industrial complex of a region (big academic or industrial city) are engaged in developing information and communication environment. Therefore, systematic developing of library and information space is vital. Within the framework of the project “Regional scientific libraries in the changing science and education environment” (Fundamental Studies Program of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2022–2026), the State Public Scientific and Technical Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences Siberian Branch has been designing the model to adapt regional libraries to modern communications and new methods of scientific publications dissemination within the context of social transformations and changing paradigm of library acquisition of scientific literature and information resources, the services provided to specialists in science and education and meeting their information needs, modified user preferences, behavior and reading styles, and the concept of libraries interaction in building and using their document resources. The authors focus on the science and education space and library and information infrastructure of Novosibirsk (big science and education center) and Western Siberia (Tomsk, Kemerovo Regions and Altay Kray) and, for comparison purposes, that of Chelyabinsk, the large industrial center in the Urals.The authors characterize in brief Chelyabinsk industrial, science and academic specialization and its library system (based on the monitoring findings), as well as the primary results of the study of library users information needs (survey based); they also examine the compliance of document resources of Chelyabinsk Regional Universal Scientific Library to the user information needs to update the conceptual model of library and information services offered to students and specialists.

Organizational Culture as a Development Resource in the Conditions of Changing Institutional Functions of Libraries

In the context of technological and socio-cultural transformations, libraries are in search for landmarks and new formats of activity. The vector of transformation of library functions is from the preservation and transmission of information to agentive: structuring communities, managing information, communicative functions. Libraries are becoming conductors of social innovation. The article considers organizational culture as a catalyst for the development of libraries in the future. The authors pose the problem of inconsistency of organizational culture with new demands and needs, as well as justify the need for the formation of an innovative type of culture. The paper presents the results of quantitative and qualitative research in the Municipal Information Library System (MILS) of Tomsk in 2021. Questionnaires and interviews were conducted with employees of three libraries of Tomsk MILS, one of which took part in the Federal project “Cultural Environment” of the National project “Culture” on the creation of model municipal libraries. The authors study organizational culture at the formal and informal levels. The analysis showed that each of the libraries demonstrated insufficient level of compliance with the context of social transformations. Barriers of organizational culture in public libraries are conservative mission, management attitudes to support performing competencies, features of clan culture (orientation to isolation, lack of openness for cooperation on the part of staff both within the library network and with external communities, underestimation of the role of partnership), technological focus of activities, etc. Reserves for the development of organizational culture are the willingness of staff to take initiatives, focus on support and building positive relationships in the team. As an opportunity to manage organizational culture, the authors note that transformations should begin with a change of emphasis in the libraryʼs mission based on a new spatial approach.

Critical incidents which limit performance of Chilean University rowers who won a medal in the Pan American Games of Lima 2019

Main objective of this study was to provide a basis for the comprehension of the main critical incidents (i.e. obstacles) that Chilean rowers who were medallists in the Pan American Games of Lima 2019 have to face within the academic, socioeconomic and sports processes. 19 athletes were selected through a non-probabilistic sampling. A content validated questionnaire and an in-deep interview were used. Higher levels of consistency were observed. Through the inferential analysis (ANOVA) it was possible to conclude that athletes are concerned with some academic and social crisis within their sporting career. This fact does not allow them to concentration and integral tranquillity to be focused and achieve proper results in academic and sports areas. Results presented in this study may contribute to the improvement of public policies and, specifically, contingency and innovation plans for improvement within higher education institutions. This study is framed within the context of social transformation that Chile is currently living.

Social transformation and Biblical interpretation a comparative study.

This article firstly summarizes the research results of the project influence of different contexts of social transformation on Biblical interpretation. If indicates and discusses the trends with regard to the interaction between social transformation and Biblical interpretation that became apparent from each of the different case studies that were done. Secondly, a comparative study is done within the interdisciplinary framework that was explored earlier in this project. The comparative study represents an attempt at generalising in order to contribute to our understanding of the intrecate relationship between social trnaformation and Biblical interpretation.

Utopia in Progress in di Prima's Revolutionary Letters

In her article "Utopia in Progress in di Prima's Revolutionary Letters" Estíbaliz Encarnación-Pinedo describes Diane di Prima's Revolutionary Letters (1971) within the context of social transformation and spatiality studies. In the context of the socio-political revolt and utopian revival of the 1970s, di Prima's utopia is grounded in reality and in progress; and it needs people's help and strength to be attained. In the first section of the article Pinedo analyzes a group of letters which serve as "tips" or a "how-to" guide to prepare for a revolution and in the second part she considers letters in which glimpses of a post-revolutionary utopian society are offered. These two aspects create a space which is both socially-formed and transformed. In this light, di Prima's revolution is read as a heterotopia, as a place of resistance used to move towards utopia.

Multilingualism Remixed: Sampling, Braggadocio and the Stylisation of Local Voice

Among the many challenges posed by contexts of social transformation and extensive mobility is the question of how multilingual voice may carry across media, modalities and context. In this article, we suggest that one approach to this complex problem may be to look at multilingual voice from a sociolinguistic perspective of performance. Our focus here is thus on how marginalised voices on the periphery of Cape Town become mainstreamed within the city's hip-hop community. Specifically, we ask how emcees sample local varieties of language, texts and registers to stage their particular stylisation of voice. By way of conclusion, we make brief recommendations with respect to the study of multilingualism in South Africa and how the stylisation of local voices in Cape Town hip-hop could inform studies on multilingual policy and planning.

The Peasant Economy of Refugee Resettlement in Eastern Sudan

Abstract This study seeks to contribute to the growing literature on migration in developing countries by placing refugee resettlement into the larger context of social transformation in agrarian societies. Eastern Sudan has experienced a massive influx of refugees during the last twenty-five years as a consequence of the longest war in postcolonial Africa. This case study examines the process of resettlement by conceptualizing the mechanisms of accumulation and impoverishment that structure the economy into which refugees have moved from Eritrea. The socioeconomic processes of differentiation and commoditization associated with agrarian change are important mediators of the interaction between incoming refugees and the host community. I argue that it is in explicating the position of refugees in the social relations of production that one can understand why some refugees become markedly better off during exile while others remain destitute.
