Alkaline earth metal ions affect the dissolution of kaolinite-bearing olivine and its carbon storage effects

Olivine dissolution applications in coastal environments hold great promise for both ocean alkalinity enhancement and carbon dioxide storage. Yet the dissolution mechanism of olivine and the influence of metal ions, such as Mg2+ and Ca2+, remain unclear. Moreover, the weathering products, such as clay minerals are usually mixed with olivine, and the influence of the associated minerals on the dissolution also unexplored. In this study, an 80-day dissolution experiment was performed in Ca2+-free artificial seawater (ASW-Ca) and ASW lacking both Ca2+ and Mg2+ (ASW-CaMg), to elucidate the mechanism of olivine dissolution and the impact of Ca2+ and Mg2+ on the presence of an associated clay mineral, kaolinite. To evaluate the mineral properties before and after dissolution, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses were used. Etch pits were observed on olivine's surface as well as its reduced crystallinity. The atomic ratio of Mg/Si in olivine decreased from 1.49 ± 0.56 in the raw samples to 1.29 ± 0.53 in the samples obtained from ASW-CaMg after undergoing the 80-day dissolution, whereas it was much higher, at 1.85 ± 0.32, in the samples from ASW-Ca. The increasing Mg/Si was attributed to the Mg2+ adsorption on the surface of olivine, which inhibited the release of structural Mg2+. Hence, Mg2+ was a key environmental factor influencing the process of olivine dissolution, and estuaries, which have low Mg2+ content and low pH may be the promising areas for the olivine application. Moreover, in ASW-CaMg, the total alkalinity (TA), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration, and charge concentration of alkaline earth metal ions increased by 3392 ± 28, 2922 ± 3, and 3740 ± 91 μmol kg−1, respectively, compared to the data from the blank experiment. Notably, TA and DIC had strong linear relationships with the alkaline earth metal ions (Mg2+ and Ca2+). The release of free alkaline earth metal cations during olivine dissolution was a controlling factor for long-term carbon dioxide storage in ASW-CaMg. Finally, during the 80-day dissolution experiment, no dissolution of the associated kaolinite was observed, however, kaolinite may influence the olivine dissolution by adsorbing the released Si.

Changes in the limiting nutrients and dominant phytoplankton communities of three major European rivers: Response to catchment lithologies and human activities

Catchment lithologies and human activities can cause variations in riverine carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) loads, and the ratio of these nutrients may affect the primary productivity of rivers and their phytoplankton communities. We conducted a comparative study of biogeochemical variations in three major European rivers—the Rhine, Danube, and Seine—which reveals the impacts of different carbonate outcrops and human impacts (agricultural activities and sewage input) on the changes in the limiting nutrients and phytoplankton community compositions of flowing water systems. N limitation was observed in the Rhine and Danube owing to their low average NO3– loads (4.04–6.45 mg/L). Although the extensive outcrops of carbonate rocks in the Seine catchment result in high average HCO3– concentrations of ∼ 4.68 mmol/L, the elevated inorganic C input did not match the high average NO3– loads (∼19.38 mg/L), driven by intensive agricultural activity and urban sewage input, demonstrating a potential C limitation on productivity. Our results show that the productivity of the Seine River, determined by the chlorophyll-a concentration, was significantly related to the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration (coefficient of determination: R2 = 0.68, P < 0.05). Our results demonstrate that changes in DIC content can significantly alter the dominant phytoplankton species in the water column. The high inputs of DIC and aqueous CO2(aq) to the Seine lead to Bacillariophyta proportions that are 3.96–8.81 % and 19.87–22.56 % higher than those of the Rhine and Danube in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. This can be explained by the difference in the efficiency of carbon concentrating mechanisms (CCMs) among phytoplankton species. Therefore, to mitigate river eutrophication and improve the quality of the aquatic environment, we suggest that future water–carbon management in the flowing water systems with abundant nutrients should consider C-limitation alleviation and its potential effect for reducing the abundance of harmful algae.

Early stages of Type I-S kerogen formation revealed by Rock-Eval® 7S analysis of sediment from a modern halo-alkaline lake (Dziani Dzaha, Mayotte)

The Dziani Dzaha (Mayotte Islands, Indian Ocean) is a small, shallow, saline and hyperalkaline maar lake. Its surface waters are characterized by intense primary production, inducing the waters below 2 m depth to remain aphotic and anoxic all year round, at least until 2017, when a ∼5 m-long core was taken from the center of the lake. The recovered sediments were described and sampled at high resolution. They consist of laminated microbial mats, mixed with carbonate lenses or nodular beds, and rare silty detrital facies. The inorganic and organic carbon contents of 160 samples were analyzed using the Rock-Eval® method, including the Rock-Eval® 7S device which quantifies both total organic sulfur and total sulfur content, in addition to conventional Rock-Eval parameters. The Dziani Dzaha sediments are characterized by high TOC content (8.5 wt% on average and up to 27.9 wt%) and variable inorganic carbon content. HI values average 630 mg HC/g TOC and reach up to 834 mg HC/g TOC. TS content varies from 0.3 to 3.6 wt%, with TSorg/TOC ratios close to 0.01 at the top of the core and fluctuating downcore between 0.02 and 0.05. Interestingly, the pyrolysis thermal stability of sulfurized organic matter increases with depth, and the highest HI values are associated with highest Sorg content, sulfurization of organic matter being generally accompanied by reductive processes. The hydrogen- and organic-sulfur-rich sediments of Dziani Dzaha can be considered modern analogues of Type I and I-S petroleum source rock deposits, such as the Eocene Green River shales and Kimmeridgian Orbagnoux laminites, with remarkable facies and geochemical similarities. Enhanced Soil Carbon Stability through Alterations in Components of Particulate and Mineral-Associated Organic Matter in Reclaimed Saline–Alkali Drainage Ditches

Soil carbon content and stability are primarily influenced by the stabilization of particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM). Despite extensive research on the stabilization processes of POM and MAOM carbon components under various land-use types, the investigation into stabilization processes of soil carbon remains limited in saline–alkali soils. Therefore, we collected soil samples from different positions of saline–alkali drainage ditches at four reclamation times (the first, seventh, fifteenth, and thirtieth year) to determine their carbon content and physicochemical properties. Moreover, POM and MAOM fractions were separated from soil samples, and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) were used to investigate changes in their chemical composition. The results showed that with increasing reclamation time, the soil total carbon and soil organic carbon (SOC) contents significantly increased from 14 to 15 and 2.9 to 5.5 g kg−1, respectively. In contrast, soil inorganic carbon content significantly decreased from 11 to 9.6 g kg−1. Notably, the changes in soil carbon components following the increasing reclamation time were primarily observed in the furrow sole at a depth of 20–40 cm. While the SOC content of the POM fraction (SOCPOM) decreased significantly, the SOC content of the MAOM fraction (SOCMAOM) increased significantly. These alterations were largely dominated by drainage processes after reclamation instead of a possible conversion from SOCPOM to SOCMAOM. FTIR results revealed that MAOM was greatly influenced by the reclamation time more than POM was, but the change in both POM and MAOM contributed to an increase in soil carbon stability. Our findings will deepen the comprehension of soil carbon stabilization processes in saline–alkali drainage ditches after reclamation and offer a research framework to investigate the stability processes of soil carbon components via alterations in POM and MAOM fractions.

Inorganic carbon limitation decreases ammonium removal and N2O production in the algae-nitrifying bacteria symbiosis system

Ammonium removal by a symbiosis system of algae (Chlorella vulgaris) and nitrifying bacteria was evaluated in a long-term photo-sequencing batch reactor under varying influent inorganic carbon (IC) concentrations (15, 10, 5 and 2.5 mmol L−1) and different nitrogen loading rate (NLR) conditions (270 and 540 mg-N L−1 d−1). The IC/N ratios provided were 2.33, 1.56, 0.78 and 0.39, respectively, for an influent NH4+-N concentration of 90 mg-N L−1 (6.43 mmol L−1). The results confirmed that both ammonium removal and N2O production were positively related with IC concentration. Satisfactory ammonium removal efficiencies (>98 %) and rates (29–34 mg-N gVSS−1 h−1) were achieved regardless of NLR levels under sufficient IC of 10 and 15 mmol L−1, while insufficient IC at 2.5 mmol L−1 led to the lowest ammonium removal rates of 0 mg-N gVSS−1 h−1. The ammonia oxidation process by ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) played a predominant role over the algae assimilation process in ammonium removal. Long-time IC deficiency also resulted in the decrease in biomass and pigments of algae and nitrifying bacteria. IC limitation led to the decreasing N2O production, probably due to its negative effect on ammonia oxidation by AOB. The optimal IC concentration was determined to be 10 mmol L−1 (i.e., IC/N of 1.56, alkalinity of 500 mg CaCO3 L−1) in the algae-bacteria symbiosis reactor, corresponding to higher ammonia oxidation rate of ∼41 mg-N gVSS−1 h−1 and lower N2O emission factor of 0.13 %. This suggests regulating IC concentrations to achieve high ammonium removal and low carbon emission simultaneously in the algae-bacteria symbiosis wastewater treatment process.

Inorganic carbon accumulation in saline soils via modification effects of organic amendments on dissolved ions and enzymes activities

Organic amendments are effective in promoting salt leaching, improving availability of nutrients and increasing crop yield in saline soils. However, the effects of the combined application of organic amendments on soil inorganic carbon (SIC) content and its driving mechanisms are unknown. We examined how changes in soil biochemical properties including moisture content, pH value, dissolved ions, soil organic C (SOC), dissolved organic C (DOC), microbial biomass C (MBC), and activities of C- and N-related enzyme due to applying (i) only mineral fertilizers (control; Ctrl) or mineral fertilization in combination with (ii) manure (M); (iii) biofertilizer plus manure (B+M); and (iv) humic acid plus manure (HA+M) modify SIC pool over three years. Organic amendments increased the content of Ca2+ and HCO3– ions, but significantly decreased Na+, Cl−, and SO42− at 0–60 cm soil layers compared to Ctrl. Furthermore, the activities of β-glucosidase (BG), Xylanase (BX), Cellobiosidase (CE), and β-1,4-N-Acetyl-glucosaminidase (NAG) increased at 0–40 cm soil. Partial least squares path model manifested that organic amendment directly accumulated SIC content by increasing Ca2+ content and the activities of BX and NAG. Additionally, the decrease of Cl− contents under organic amendments favored the increase of MBC and SOC content, which further increased SIC content. Generally, the effects of HA+M were greater than other fertilization managements, which increased the stocks of SIC and total C at 0–60 cm soils by 27 Mg ha−1 and 47 Mg ha−1, respectively. Furthermore, the effect of organic amendments on SIC content is more pronounced below the first 20 cm. Thus, the application of organic amendments is recommended as an appropriate measure to not only improve soil condition for plant growth and SOC accumulation but also to store C as SIC at deeper depths.

A critical trade-off between nitrogen quota and growth allows Coccolithus braarudii life cycle phases to exploit varying environment

Abstract. Coccolithophores have a distinct haplo-diplontic life cycle, which allows them to grow and divide into two different life cycle phases (haploid and diploid). These life cycle phases vary significantly in inorganic carbon content and morphology and inhabit distinct niches, with haploids generally preferring low-nitrogen and high-temperature and high-light environments in situ. This niche contrast indicates different physiology of the life cycle phases, which is considered here in the context of a trait trade-off framework, in which a particular set of traits comes with both costs and benefits. However, coccolithophore's phase trade-offs are not fully identified, limiting our understanding of the functionality of the coccolithophore life cycle. Here, we investigate the response of the two life cycle phases of the coccolithophore Coccolithus braarudii to key environmental drivers: light, temperature, and nitrogen, using laboratory experiments. With these data, we identify the main trade-offs of each life cycle phase and use models to test the role of such trade-offs under different environmental conditions. The lab experiments show the life cycle phases have similar cell size, minimum nitrogen quotas, uptake rates, and temperature and light optima. However, we find that they have different coccosphere sizes, maximum growth rates, and maximum nitrogen quotas. We also observe a trade-off between maximum growth rate and maximum nitrogen quota, with higher growth rates and low maximum nitrogen quotas in the haploid phase and vice versa in the diploid phase. Testing these phase characteristics in a numerical chemostat model, we find that the growth–quota trade-off allows C. braarudii to exploit variable nitrogen conditions more efficiently. Because the diploid ability to store more nitrogen is advantageous when the nitrogen supply is intermittent, the higher haploid growth rate is advantageous when the nitrogen supply is constant. Although the ecological drivers of C. braarudii life cycle fitness are likely multi-faceted, spanning both top-down and bottom-up trait trade-offs, our results suggest that a trade-off between nitrogen storage and maximum growth rate is an essential bottom-up control on the distribution of C. braarudii life cycle phases.

French coastal network for carbonate system monitoring: the CocoriCO2 dataset

Abstract. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have risen steadily and have induced a decrease of the averaged surface ocean pH by 0.1 units, corresponding to an increase in ocean acidity of about 30 %. In addition to ocean warming, ocean acidification poses a tremendous challenge to some marine organisms, especially calcifiers. The need for long-term oceanic observations of pH and temperature is a key element to assess the vulnerability of marine communities and ecosystems to these pressures. Nearshore productive environments, where a large majority of shellfish farming activities are conducted, are known to present pH levels as well as amplitudes of daily and seasonal variations that are much larger than those observed in the open ocean. Yet, to date, there are very few coastal observation sites where these parameters are measured simultaneously and at high frequency. To bridge this gap, an observation network was initiated in 2021 in the framework of the CocoriCO2 project. Six sites were selected along the French Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines based on their importance in terms of shellfish production and the presence of high- and low-frequency monitoring activities. At each site, autonomous pH sensors were deployed, both inside and outside shellfish production areas, next to high-frequency CTD (conductivity–temperature–depth) probes operated through two operating monitoring networks. pH sensors were set to an acquisition rate of 15 min, and discrete seawater samples were collected biweekly in order to control the quality of pH data (laboratory spectrophotometric measurements) as well as to measure total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations for full characterization of the carbonate system. While this network has been up and running for more than 2 years, the acquired dataset has already revealed important differences in terms of pH variations between monitored sites related to the influence of diverse processes (freshwater inputs, tides, temperature, biological processes). Effects of organic amendments, biofertilisers and biodynamic preparations on soil properties and leaf nutrient concentrations in grapevine

ABSTRACT Excessive and unbalanced use of chemical fertilisers can lead to depletion of physical and chemical properties of the soil and have negative impacts on the environment. This investigation was conducted at Mizoram University, Aizawl, Mizoram, India and aimed to evaluate effects of organic amendments, biofertilisers and biodynamic preparations on soil properties and leaf nutrient status of grapevine. The experiment was laid out in randomised block design with 14 treatments consisting of different combinations of organic amendments, biofertilisers and biodynamic preparations viz. farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost (VC), pig manure (PIM), neem cake (NC), Azospirillum, phosphate solubilising bacteria (PSB), potash solubilising bacteria (KSB), Trichoderma harzianum, cow pat pit (CPP) and biodynamic preparations BD500 and BD501. The results demonstrated that the use of organic amendments in combination with biofertilisers and biodynamic preparations enhanced leaf nutrient status as well soil properties in the vineyard. Among all the tested combinations, the highest concentrations of Mn, Zn, chlorophyll a, b and total chlorophyll in the leaves and concentrations of soil organic carbon, inorganic carbon, total carbon, total N, available N, P, K, Mn and Zn, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and abundance of bacteria and Actinomycetes in the soil were recorded with application of PIM + Azospirillum + PSB + KSB + T. harzianum + CPP + BD 500 + BD 501. This treatment was therefore recommended as a suitable option to meet the demand for long-term maintenance of soil fertility as well agroecosystem conservation and sustainability.

Effects of the hydrologic process and geochemistry on dissolved carbon in shallow groundwater surrounding Qinghai Lake

A high concentration of dissolved carbon in groundwater increases drinking water health risks and carbon transport. Understanding the comprehensive impact of hydrologic processes and geochemistry on dissolved carbon in shallow groundwater also is a fundamental prerequisite for estimating the carbon budget of lakes in the Tibetan Plateau. This study investigated the spatial–temporal characteristics of the hydrologic process, geochemistry and dissolved carbon in shallow groundwater by the stable isotope tracer method, Piper diagram and Boomerang envelope model. The driving factors of dissolved carbon in shallow groundwater were explored by correlation analysis and redundancy analysis. The results showed low dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations and high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations during the thawing period and rainy season and high DIC concentrations and low DOC concentrations during the freezing period. The seepage velocity, soil carbon dioxide dissolution and gypsum dissolution were the main factors influencing DIC concentrations during the thawing period. The mineralization and decomposition of DOC and dissolution of carbonate rocks were the main factors influencing DIC concentrations during the freezing period. The concentrations of DOC were mainly controlled by the adsorption of Ca2+ and Mg2+, microbial activity and pollutants produced by human activities. Our results are useful for ecological sustainable development, human health, and research on the carbon transport in groundwater in the Tibetan Plateau.

Integrating Tide‐Driven Wetland Soil Redox and Biogeochemical Interactions Into a Land Surface Model

AbstractRedox processes, aqueous and solid‐phase chemistry, and pH dynamics are key drivers of subsurface biogeochemical cycling and methanogenesis in terrestrial and wetland ecosystems but are typically not included in terrestrial carbon cycle models. These omissions may introduce errors when simulating systems where redox interactions and pH fluctuations are important, such as wetlands where saturation of soils can produce anoxic conditions and coastal systems where sulfate inputs from seawater can influence biogeochemistry. Integrating cycling of redox‐sensitive elements could therefore allow models to better represent key elements of carbon cycling and greenhouse gas production. We describe a model framework that couples the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) Land Model (ELM) with PFLOTRAN biogeochemistry, allowing geochemical processes and redox interactions to be integrated with land surface model simulations. We implemented a reaction network including aerobic decomposition, fermentation, sulfate reduction, sulfide oxidation, methanogenesis, and methanotrophy as well as pH dynamics along with iron oxide and iron sulfide mineral precipitation and dissolution. We simulated biogeochemical cycling in tidal wetlands subject to either saltwater or freshwater inputs driven by tidal hydrological dynamics. In simulations with saltwater tidal inputs, sulfate reduction led to accumulation of sulfide, higher dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations, lower dissolved organic carbon concentrations, and lower methane emissions than simulations with freshwater tidal inputs. Model simulations compared well with measured porewater concentrations and surface gas emissions from coastal wetlands in the Northeastern United States. These results demonstrate how simulating geochemical reaction networks can improve land surface model simulations of subsurface biogeochemistry and carbon cycling.

Synergistic advantages of volcanic ash weathering in saline soils: CO2 sequestration and enhancement of plant growth

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a primary greenhouse gas that has experienced a surge in atmospheric concentration due to human activities and lifestyles. It is imperative to curtail atmospheric CO2 levels promptly to alleviate the multifaceted impacts of climate warming. The soil serves as a natural reservoir for CO2 sequestration. The scientific premise of this study is that CO2 sequestration in agriculturally relevant, organically-deficient saline soil can be achieved by incorporating alkaline earth silicates. Volcanic ash (VA) was used as a soil amendment for CO2 removal from saline soil by leveraging enhanced silicate rock weathering (ERW). The study pursued two primary objectives: first, we aimed to evaluate the impact of various doses of VA, employed as an amendment for organically-deficient soil, on the growth performance of key cultivated crops (sorghum and mung bean) in inland saline-alkaline agricultural regions of northeastern China. Second, we aimed to assess alterations in the physical properties of the amended soil through mineralogical examinations, utilizing X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analyses, quantifying the increase in inorganic carbon content within the soil. In the potting tests, mung bean plant height exhibited a noteworthy increase of approximately 41 % with the addition of 10 % VA. Sorghum plant height and aboveground and belowground biomass dry weights increased with VA application across all tested doses. At the optimal VA application rate (20 %), the sorghum achieved a CO2 sequestration rate of 0.14 kg CO2·m−2·month−1. XRD and SEM-EDS analyses confirmed that the augmented inorganic carbon in the VA-amended soils stemmed primarily from calcite accumulation. These findings contribute to elucidating the mechanism underlying VA as an amendment for organically-deficient soils and provide an effective approach for enhancing the carbon sink capacity of saline soils.

Environmental quality and carrying capacity for restoration of estuarine mangrove ecosystem in the coral triangle ecoregion, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia

ABSTRACT The present study determines the environmental quality and carrying capacity for the restoration of the degraded mangroves in Southeast Sulawesi. The physico-chemical conditions of estuarine water and its sediment nutrient contents were determined in both protected and unprotected areas, with no significant difference (p > 0.05) except for nitrogen and inorganic carbon contents of water. The current study found promising environments for the restoration of degraded mangroves in unprotected areas in Southeast Sulawesi.

Authigenic Carbonate Burial Within the Late Devonian Western Canada Sedimentary Basin and Its Impact on the Global Carbon Cycle

AbstractStable carbon isotope ratios (δ13C values) of marine carbonates are widely used to infer the relative burial rates of organic carbon, a source of oxygen to the ocean‐atmosphere system. This inference, however, is based on the assumption that ocean‐atmospheric carbon is buried either as organic carbon or as marine carbonate minerals. The burial of authigenic carbonate minerals formed within sediments after deposition, with low δ13C values (i.e., similar to organic carbon), has been proposed to explain high δ13C values in marine carbonates without the need for high burial fluxes of organic carbon. To test this hypothesis, we focus on the Late Devonian, a time period with both pervasive ocean anoxia and a severe reduction in shallow‐water carbonate deposition—conditions hypothesized to promote authigenic carbonate formation. We present sedimentological and geochemical data from limestones and black shales of the Wabamun Group, Besa River and Exshaw formations of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. These data are compared to inorganic and organic weight percent measurements of North American shales acquired from the USGS National Geochemical Database (N = 4,437). Results show that basinal shale lack authigenic carbonate with low δ13C values and that the mean δ13C value of carbonate in these shales (−0.3‰) do not differ substantially from mean δ13C of carbonates in platform carbonates of a similar age (0.4‰). Furthermore, inorganic carbon content in Late Devonian shales (mean weight percent = 0.55%, N = 54) is lower than average Phanerozoic North American shale (mean of 1.95%, N = 4,055). Lastly, organic carbon‐to‐inorganic carbon ratios (OC:IC) of North American shales are well above 1 (mean = 3.72 for Late Devonian shales (N = 374), 2.25 for shales (N = 3,653) of all other ages). Therefore, even if the burial of fine‐grained siliciclastic formations carrying authigenic carbonates were to increase, the concomitant increase in organic carbon burial would be even larger. Together, data from this study do not provide evidence that the burial of authigenic carbonate would have a significant effect on global carbon isotope mass balance.

Environmental factors controlling seasonal and spatial variability of zooplankton in thermokarst lakes along a permafrost gradient of Western Siberia

Humic thermokarst lakes of permafrost peatlands in Western Siberia Lowland (WSL) are major environmental controllers of carbon and nutrient storage in inland waters and greenhouse gases emissions to the atmosphere in the subarctic. In contrast to sizable former research devoted to hydrochemical and hydrobiological (phytoplankton) composition, zooplankton communities of these thermokarst lakes and thaw ponds remain poorly understood, especially along the latitudinal gradient, which is a perfect predictor of permafrost zones. To fill this gap, 69 thermokarst lakes of the WSL were sampled using unprecedented spatial coverage, from continuous to sporadic permafrost zone, in order to assess zooplankton (Cladocera, Copepoda, Rotifera) diversity and abundance across three main open water physiological seasons (spring, summer and autumn). We aimed at assessing the relationship of environmental factors (water column hydrochemistry, nutrients, and phytoplankton parameters) with the abundance and diversity of zooplankton. A total of 74 zooplankton species and taxa were detected, with an average eight taxa per lake/pond. Species richness increased towards the north and reached the maximum in the continuous permafrost zone with 13 species found in this zone only. In contrast, the number of species per waterbody decreased towards the north, which was mainly associated with a decrease in the number of cladocerans. Abundance and diversity of specific zooplankton groups strongly varied across the seasons and permafrost zones. Among the main environmental controllers, Redundancy Analysis revealed that water temperature, lake area, depth, pH, Dissolved Inorganic and Organic Carbon and CO2 concentrations were closely related to zooplankton abundance. Cladocerans were positively related to water temperature during all seasons. Copepods were positively related to depth and lake water pH in all seasons. Rotifers were related to different factors in each season, but were most strongly associated with DOC, depth, CH4, phytoplankton and cladoceran abundance. Under climate warming scenario, considering water temperature increase and permafrost boundary shift northward, one can expect an increase in the diversity and abundance of cladocerans towards the north which can lead to partial disappearance of copepods, especially rare calanoid species.

Integrating Trait‐Based Stoichiometry in a Biogeochemical Inverse Model Reveals Links Between Phytoplankton Physiology and Global Carbon Export

AbstractThe elemental ratios of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus (C:N:P) within organic matter play a key role in coupling biogeochemical cycles in the global ocean. At the cellular level, these ratios are controlled by physiological responses to the environment. But linking these cellular‐level processes to global biogeochemical cycles remains challenging. We present a novel model framework that combines knowledge of phytoplankton cellular functioning with global scale hydrographic data, to assess the role of variable carbon‐to‐phosphorus ratios (RC:P) on the distribution of export production. We implement a trait‐based mechanistic model of phytoplankton growth into a global biogeochemical inverse model to predict global patterns of phytoplankton physiology and stoichiometry that are consistent with both biological growth mechanisms and hydrographic carbon and nutrient observations. We compare this model to empirical parameterizations relating RC:P to temperature or phosphate concentration. We find that the way the model represents variable stoichiometry affects the magnitude and spatial pattern of carbon export, with globally integrated fluxes varying by up to 10% (1.3 Pg C yr−1) across models. Despite these differences, all models exhibit strong consistency with observed dissolved inorganic carbon and phosphate concentrations (R2 &gt; 0.9), underscoring the challenge of selecting the most accurate model structure. We also find that the choice of parameterization impacts the capacity of changing RC:P to buffer predicted export declines. Our novel framework offers a pathway by which additional biological information might be used to reduce the structural uncertainty in model representations of phytoplankton stoichiometry, potentially improving our capacity to project future changes.

Biochar application regulating soil inorganic nitrogen and organic carbon content in cropland in the Central Europe: a seven-year field study

Biochar incorporation into soil has shown potential, in enhancing nitrogen fertilizer (N-fertilizer) efficacy and soil organic carbon content (SOC). This study addresses a critical gap in the literature by investigating the effects of biochar addition over a seven-year period (2014–2020) on inorganic N, SOC, and pH in Haplic Luvisol. The research involved a rain-fed field experiment, with a crop rotation comprising spring barley, maize, spring wheat, and pea. Biochar, applied at the rates of 0, 10, and 20 t ha−1 in 2014, was reapplied to specific plots in 2018. Biochar was also combined with N-fertilizer at three level (N0, N1, and N2). Results showed a significant interactive influence of biochar and N-fertilizer combination on NO3− and NH4+ contents. Intriguingly, the addition of 10 t biochar ha−1 consistently decreased soil inorganic N levels across most of the examined months. Increasing biochar application rates led to a significant rise in pH, establishing a clear, negative correlation between soil pH and inorganic N content. Biochar significantly increased SOC compared to the control, particularly after the reapplication in 2018. However, this effect showed a diminishing trend over time. The study suggests that incorporating biochar treatments may enhance N-fertilizer effectiveness. However, the long-term implications of biochar application with N-fertilizer on N mineralization are specific to individual soil and biochar combinations. Except the application of 20 t ha−1 biochar at N2 in 2019, biochar did not affect the crop yields. A decade-long cruise time series (2008–2018) of physical and biogeochemical conditions in the southern Salish Sea, North America

Abstract. Coastal and estuarine waters of the northern California Current system and southern Salish Sea host an observational network capable of characterizing biogeochemical dynamics related to ocean acidification, hypoxia, and marine heatwaves. Here, we compiled data sets from a set of cruises conducted in estuarine waters of Puget Sound (southern Salish Sea) and its boundary waters (Strait of Juan de Fuca and Washington coast). This data product provides data from a decade of cruises with consistent formatting, extended data quality control, and multiple units for parameters such as oxygen with different end use needs and conventions. All cruises obtained high-quality temperature, salinity, inorganic carbon, nutrient, and oxygen observations to provide insight into the dynamic distribution of physical and biogeochemical conditions in this large urban estuary complex on the west coast of North America. At all sampling stations, conductivity–temperature–depth (CTD) casts included sensors for measuring temperature, conductivity, pressure, and oxygen concentrations. Laboratory analyses of discrete water samples collected at all stations throughout the water column in Niskin bottles provided measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), dissolved oxygen, nutrient (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, phosphate, and silicate), and total alkalinity (TA) content. This data product includes observations from 35 research cruises, including 715 oceanographic profiles, with &gt;7490 sensor measurements of temperature, salinity, and oxygen; ≥6070 measurements of discrete oxygen and nutrient samples; and ≥4462 measurements of inorganic carbon variables (i.e., DIC and TA). The observations comprising this cruise compilation collectively characterize the spatial and temporal variability in a region with large dynamic ranges of the physical (temperature = 6.0–21.8 ∘C, salinity = 15.6–34.0) and biogeochemical (oxygen = 12–481 µmol kg−1, dissolved inorganic carbon = 1074–2362 µmol kg−1, total alkalinity = 1274–2296 µmol kg−1) parameters central to understanding ocean acidification and hypoxia in this productive estuary system with numerous interacting human impacts on its ecosystems. All observations conform to the climate-quality observing guidelines of the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Ocean Acidification Program, and ocean carbon community best practices. This ongoing cruise time series supports the estuarine and coastal monitoring and research objectives of the Washington Ocean Acidification Center and US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ocean and Atmospheric Research programs, and it provides diverse end users with the information needed to frame biological impacts research, validate numerical models, inform state and tribal water quality and fisheries management, and support decision-makers. Lithological controls of the Mg isotope composition of the Lena River across seasons and its impact on the annual isotope flux to the Arctic Ocean

Given the importance of permafrost regions in providing the major elements to the Arctic Ocean, and the vulnerability of these regions to ongoing climate change due to permafrost thaw and landscape modifications, assessing the magnitude and characterizing the factors governing isotope compositions in river waters across seasons and space is of high priority.Towards identifying possible environmental controlling factors (climate, vegetation, rock lithology) and quantifying annual fluxes of dissolved Mg isotopic signatures in large Arctic rivers located in the continuous permafrost zone, here we measured hydrochemical and Mg isotope compositions of the Lena River main channel and its various tributaries over different seasons of the year. In general, we did not find evidence of any statistically significant (p < 0.05) correlation between δ26Mg and main physico-geographical parameters of the river watersheds (temperature, permafrost, type of vegetation). The exception is the decrease in riverine δ26Mg values that was accompanied by an increase in the carbonate rock proportion in the watershed, whereas an opposite trend was observed for the abundance of terrigenous and silicate rocks. An incontestable control of dolomite rocks on Mg isotope signature in the Lena River was also supported by decreasing δ26Mg values with increasing Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) concentration, as also observed for other Artic River basins. This relationship was mostly pronounced during the high-flow period, when secondary Mg silicate formation in soils and underground waters and so the terrestrial uptake of Mg were the lowest. In the Lena River main channel, the lowest δ26Mg values (−1.5 ± 0.05 ‰) were observed during autumn-winter (September to March), probably reflecting a dominant role of underground reservoirs and subsurface soil weathering of isotopically light Precambrian dolomites.The mean δ26Mg values of the Lena River during two months of spring (−1.02 to −1.28 ‰), 4 months of summer baseflow (−1.30 ‰) and 6 months of winter yields a mean discharge-weighted annual value of −1.26 ± 0.05 ‰. This number coincides with the value of summer baseflow reported in earlier works. Therefore, like in the recently studied Yenisey River basin, the Mg isotope signature of the Lena River water likely stems from a mixture of carbonate (−2.0 ≥ δ26Mg ≥ −2.5 ‰) and silicate (0 ≥ δ26Mg ≥ −0.2 ‰) rocks in its watershed. We also argue that the discharge-weighted mean annual isotopic signature of an element in the Artic rivers can be reasonably approximated by a single sampling campaign during summer baseflow. This allows cost-effective assessment of mean riverine isotopic signatures of other elements in both small and large rivers to the Arctic Ocean.

Weakened pelagic-benthic coupling on an Arctic outflow shelf (Northeast Greenland) suggested by benthic ecosystem changes

Arctic marine ecosystems are becoming more boreal due to climate change. Predictions of ecosystem change focus mainly on Arctic inflow or interior shelves, with few comprehensive studies on Arctic outflow regions. During September–October 2017, soft-bottom communities were sampled and benthic ecosystem processes were quantified at 12 stations on the Northeast Greenland shelf (outflow shelf) and compared to the last regional ecosystem study, conducted in 1992 and 1993. The benthic habitat was characterized in terms of sediment granulometry, pigment concentrations, and porewater chemistry (dissolved inorganic carbon, nutrients). Total abundance and biomass of macrobenthos and meiobenthos, bacterial abundance, porewater dissolved inorganic carbon and ammonium concentrations were higher on the outer shelf compared to locations adjacent to the Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden glacier at 79°N and the inner shelf stations (e.g., macrofauna: 1,964–2,952 vs. 18–1,381 individuals m−2). These results suggest higher benthic production in the outer parts of the NEG shelf. This difference was also pronounced in macrobenthic and meiobenthic community structure, which was driven mainly by food availability (pigments with 1.3–4.3 vs. 0.3–0.9 µg g−1 sediment, higher total organic carbon content and bacterial abundance). Compared to the early 1990s, warmer bottom water temperatures, increased number of sea-ice-free days and lower sediment pigment concentrations in 2017 were accompanied by decreased polychaete and increased nematode abundance and diversity, and a different community structure of nematode genera. The present study confirms previous reports of strong pelagic-benthic coupling on the NEG shelf, but highlights a possible weakening since the early 1990s, with a potential shift in importance from macrofauna to meiofauna in the benthic community. Increasing inflow of Atlantic water and decreasing volume transport and thickness of sea ice through the Fram Strait, probably affecting the Northeast Water Polynya, may be responsible, suggesting ecosystem-wide consequences of continued changes in sea-ice patterns on Arctic shelves.
